Name Change in Aadhaar Card in Jharkhand
Aadhaar is the first record to update after any name change and the one every other office reads, which makes it the worst place to guess. UIDAI's own document list sorts name updates into six that need a supporting document and no gazette, and one, a first or full name change, that needs the Gazette of India with an old-name photo ID. It allows two name updates in a lifetime. A name change in Aadhaar card in Jharkhand needs a gazette only for a first or full name change. For that case, UIDAI's list asks for the Gazette of India notification together with a photo ID in the old name. Six other updates need only the matching supporting document and no gazette: a typographical mistake, a transliteration error, a regional language update, a change on marriage, divorce or adoption with the certificate or order, initials added or edited, and a change in the order of the name. Aadhaar allows a name to be updated twice in a lifetime; a third attempt is rejected at the Kendra and can be taken to the UIDAI Regional Office through the 1947 helpline with the EID slip and the Gazette. The update is done at an Aadhaar Seva Kendra with biometric verification, commonly Rs 75 per attempt, not refunded on rejection, or online on myAadhaar where the portal currently offers it. Aadhaar Name Change Limit: Two Updates in a Lifetime, and the Exception Route
UIDAI allows a name to be updated twice in a lifetime, a date of birth once and a gender once. Every name update counts, whether it fixed one letter or changed the whole name, and a child's early updates count too. The rule is why the final form of the name is decided against the Class 10 certificate before anyone sits at a Kendra, and why we say no to a client who wants to "just fix Aadhaar for now" and sort the surname later.
Attempt one and two
Ordinary updates at a Kendra or online, with the document for your category. Ask the operator to read the English and Hindi lines back before biometrics; a rejected attempt does not count against the limit, but the fee is not refunded.
Attempt three
Rejected at the Kendra for limit exceeded. UIDAI's published route is exception processing through the Regional Office: after the rejection, call 1947 or email UIDAI with the EID number of the latest attempt, the Gazette notification, and for a first or full name change an old-name photo ID, or the marriage, divorce or adoption document.
What the exception is not
Not a right, not fast, and not a reason to spend the first two carelessly. It exists for genuine cases, a marriage after two earlier corrections is the usual one, and it is decided by the Regional Office on the papers.

The English and Hindi Name Lines on a Jharkhand Aadhaar
Aadhaar stores the name twice, in English and in the regional language, Hindi for Jharkhand, and prints both. The Hindi line is usually generated by transliteration from the English line at enrolment, which is where tribal surnames go wrong: Hembrom and Hembram become the same Devanagari word, Xalxo becomes something no family member recognises, and a name with a silent letter gets an extra syllable. A wrong Hindi line is corrected as a regional language update with no gazette, and a wrong English line with a correct Hindi line is a transliteration correction, also with no gazette. Ask the operator to show both lines on the screen before biometrics; the form only shows one.

Central Gazette Name Change Process From Jharkhand, Step by Step, Before the Aadhaar Update
For a first or full name change, Aadhaar wants the Gazette of India notification. There is no Gazette office in Jharkhand and no State Gazette route; the file goes to the Department of Publication in Delhi in your own name. Here is the whole Central Gazette process, in the order it happens.

Sworn on non-judicial stamp paper before a notary at your district court, in the OLD name as on your current Aadhaar: old name, new name, father's or husband's name, address with pin code, reason, verification clause, notary seal and register number. Two newspaper notices, day 3 to 7
One Hindi daily and one English daily in editions that circulate in Jharkhand, identical twenty-word wording quoting the affidavit number and date. Keep the complete original page of each paper, masthead and date visible, two copies. Rs 800 to Rs 4,000 at actual cost. Detail on the newspaper page.
Proforma, CD and request letter, day 7 to 8
The Department's proforma typed in two copies, headed "No. ADVT IV /", signed in the old name, two witnesses with full addresses and pin codes, two photographs, self-attested IDs of you and both witnesses; a CD with the notice in Word without the witness portion plus a signed certificate that soft and hard copy match; a request letter to the Controller of Publications. Only on bharatkosh.gov.in, in your own name, selecting the Department of Publication and the Gazette notification purpose: commonly Rs 1,100 for an adult, Rs 1,700 for a minor, revised each financial year, non-refundable. Print the receipt for the file. No demand draft, no cash, no counter anywhere in Jharkhand.

Aadhaar in Jharkhand: Seva Kendras, the Registrar and Children's Aadhaar
Kendras
UIDAI-run Aadhaar Seva Kendras are operational in Ranchi, Dhanbad, Jamshedpur, Bokaro, Deoghar and Giridih, and as reported by Akashvani in June 2026 eight more are being set up in Hazaribagh, Dumka, Godda, Sahibganj, Garhwa, Palamu, West Singhbhum and Saraikela-Kharsawan. Banks, post offices and Pragya Kendras run enrolment and update centres across all 24 districts. The UIDAI locator lists the current ones; the larger Kendras take online appointments. For a first or full name change, the UIDAI-run Kendra is the surest, because the Gazette-plus-old-ID pairing is routine there.
The registrar
In Jharkhand the District Magistrate acts as the UIDAI registrar for the district, which is why district-level camps and the block-level centres exist. A dispute about a rejected update, short of the Regional Office route, starts with the district's Aadhaar cell.
Children
A child's Aadhaar is enrolled on a parent's with no biometrics before 5, then updated at 5 and 15. A child's name update is done with the birth certificate, the adoption order or the Gazette PDF, ideally on the free biometric visit, and it counts against the child's two lifetime updates. Aadhaar Name Change Mistakes That Spend an Update for Nothing
Before the counter
- Buying a gazette for a category that needs a document: a marriage surname, a typo, a Hindi line.
- Going for a full name change without the Gazette, or with the Gazette but no old-name photo ID.
- Deciding the spelling from the current Aadhaar instead of the Class 10 certificate.
- A Gazette whose address differs from the Aadhaar address.
