JAC Certificate Name Correction
Almost everything written about correcting a name on a Jharkhand Academic Council certificate gets one thing wrong. The board does not correct your marksheet against your Aadhaar, your birth certificate or an affidavit. It corrects it against the school's own admission register, and the application reaches the board through the school, not from you. So the first question is never which form to fill. It is: what name does the admission register carry? If the register is right and the certificate is wrong, this is a correction, it is cheap, and no gazette is involved. If the register carries the same wrong spelling, the board has nothing to correct against, and the route changes completely. This page walks both.
To correct a name on a JAC certificate or marksheet, you apply through the school you studied in, not directly to the council. The school takes the correction form, attaches the supporting papers and its own letter from the head of the institution, and forwards the file to the Jharkhand Academic Council, whose office is at Gyandeep Campus, Namkum, Ranchi 834010. The board checks the entry against the school's admission register and the original records, and corrects the certificate to match. That is the whole logic: the register is the anchor, and your other documents are supporting evidence, not the thing being copied from. If you are still a student, the fastest route is the council's own online data correction window, which opens before the admit card is issued for class 9 and class 11 registration and for annual examination candidates. You log in on jac.jharkhand.gov.in with your student login, download the examinee information sheet, check the name, the parents' names and the date of birth, and correct them there. Search for JAC certificate name correction and you mostly get forum answers written for other boards. The most damaging one repeats a CBSE rule as if it were universal, that a name change is considered only where a court has permitted it and it has been notified in a Government gazette. That is CBSE's own rule for a change of name, and quoting it at a Jharkhand student with a misspelt certificate sends them to buy a gazette they do not need. Others say an affidavit will do. An affidavit is not a correction; it explains a mismatch while the correction runs.

Start With the School Admission Register, Not With the Correction Form
When a school admits a child, the name is written into the admission register from whatever paper the family produced that day. Everything the board later prints comes down that chain: register, registration data, admit card, marksheet, certificate. So when a certificate is wrong, the board's question is not whether your Aadhaar says something else. It is whether its own source records say something else.
Ask for the entry in writing
Go to the school and ask to see the admission register entry and, if it survives, the original admission form. Ask for a photocopy of that page. Everything after this depends on what those two lines say.
If the register is right
The certificate is a printing or data error and the board will correct it against its own records. This is the cheap, ordinary route and it needs no affidavit of name change, no newspaper and no gazette.
If the register is wrong
The board has nothing to correct against, so no amount of paperwork through the school will fix it. That is the case the public notice route exists for, and knowing it early saves months.

Correcting a JAC Name Online Before the Admit Card Is Issued
This is the cheapest and fastest correction available, and most families miss it. The council opens a data correction window for students registered in class 9 and class 11 and for candidates of the annual secondary and intermediate examinations, before the admit card is issued. Name, parents' names and date of birth can be corrected there.
Log in on the council portal
Open jac.jharkhand.gov.in and use the student login with the student ID your school allotted at registration.
Download the examinee information sheet
Read every line, not just the name: the surname, the spelling in both scripts, the parents' names and the date of birth.
Correct it in the window
Make the correction and submit, then download the corrected sheet and keep a printout with your school file.
Check the admit card too
When the admit card arrives, read the name again. What is on the admit card is what will print on the marksheet.

Get the register page
Ask the school for the admission register entry and, if it exists, the original admission form. Take photocopies attested by the head of the institution.
Collect the correction form at the school
The form comes from the school, not from you. Fill it stating the exact error, the wrong entry and the correct entry, letter for letter.
Attach the supporting papers
The marksheet and certificate, the register page, the transfer certificate, the identity papers that carry the correct name, and a letter from the head of the institution reporting the error.
The school forwards it and you follow up
The school sends the file to the council at Namkum with the prescribed fee. Keep the forwarding letter number and the date; that is what you quote when you follow up.
What to Do If the School Will Not Forward Your JAC Correction
This is a common and solvable problem. A school may be slow, the head of institution may have changed, or nobody wants to sign for a register entry made long before their time. The board cannot act without the school, so the pressure has to be applied where the file is stuck.
Put it in writing
Submit a written application to the head of the institution and take a receiving stamp on your copy with the date. A dated receipt changes the conversation, and every later step needs it.
Escalate to the DEO or DSE
Write to the District Education Officer or the District Superintendent of Education, attach the receipted copy, and state plainly that the school has not forwarded a correction the register supports. This is the escalation that usually works.
If the school has closed
Ask the district education office where that school's records were deposited. Records are usually transferred rather than destroyed, and the office that holds them can issue what the board needs.
When the Admission Register Carries the Same Wrong Spelling
This is the case no competitor page explains, and it is common in Jharkhand, because a name spoken in Santali, Mundari, Kurukh, Ho, Nagpuri, Bhojpuri, Bengali or Urdu was written into a Hindi register by ear on the day of admission. The register and the certificate agree with each other and both differ from the rest of your life's documents.
Why the school route closes
The board corrects a certificate to match its source record. If the source record says the same thing, there is no error for it to correct, and the file will come back however many times it is sent.
What replaces it
A public notice in Part IV of the Gazette of India that names the certificate, quotes the wrong spelling exactly as printed, and states the actual and correct name. That published notice is the instrument other offices then accept.
What it does not do
A published notice does not rewrite the school register or reprint the marksheet by itself. It settles which name is yours for every office that reads the two together, and the board file, where one is possible, is built on top of it.
The Gazette Route When JAC Cannot Correct the Certificate: Step by Step
Reach this part only if the school route is closed, which usually means the admission register carries the same wrong spelling or you are choosing a new name rather than fixing an old entry. There is no gazette counter anywhere in Jharkhand, and the e-Gazette portal is where a published notice is read, not where an application is filed. The file is built locally and posted to the Department of Publication in Delhi in your own name. Here is the whole process, in the order it happens, with what each paper says.
Route check and wording, day 0
Confirm that you need a gazette at all. If the school's admission register carries the right spelling, you do not: that is a correction through the school. A gazette is for the case where the register is wrong too, and then the wording is a public notice quoting the wrong spelling, not a change of name. Fix the exact wording and confirm it in writing.
Affidavit, day 1 to 2
Sworn on non-judicial stamp paper before a notary at your district court, in the OLD name as on your current Aadhaar: old name, new name, father's or husband's name, address with pin code, reason, verification clause, notary seal and register number. Stamp paper and notary commonly Rs 100 to Rs 500. Format on the affidavit page.
Two newspaper notices, day 3 to 7
One Hindi daily and one English daily in editions that circulate in Jharkhand, identical wording quoting the affidavit number and date. Keep the complete original page of each paper, masthead and date visible, two copies. Rs 800 to Rs 4,000 at actual cost. Detail on the newspaper page.
Proforma, CD and request letter, day 7 to 8
The Department's proforma typed in two copies, headed "No. ADVT IV /", signed in the old name, two witnesses with full addresses and pin codes, two photographs, self-attested IDs of you and both witnesses; a CD with the notice in Word without the witness portion plus a signed certificate that soft and hard copy match; a request letter to the Controller of Publications. Only on bharatkosh.gov.in, in your own name, selecting the Department of Publication and the Gazette notification purpose: commonly Rs 1,100 for an adult, Rs 1,700 for a minor, revised each financial year, non-refundable. Print the receipt for the file. No demand draft, no cash, no counter anywhere in Jharkhand.

Reading the published notice
The e-Gazette PDF carries the Gazette of India number, the Part IV heading, the date of publication, the page number and your notice in its own paragraph. Every office reads the number, the date and the page; write them on every covering letter, including the one to the board. A notice with a misprint is corrected by corrigendum within six months, free where the press erred; a corrected notice is what the board gets.
Father's and Mother's Name Correction on a JAC Certificate
A JAC certificate prints the father's and mother's names, and a mismatch there stops as many files as a wrong student name. Recruitment panels in particular compare the father's name on the Class 10 certificate with the name on his own identity documents, and a difference reads as a discrepancy even when the family knows it is the same person.

JAC Name Correction Myths and Mistakes
The myths
- "A name change needs a court order and a gazette notification"; that is CBSE's own rule for a change of name, quoted online as if every board followed it.
