When the JAC Register Carries the Same Wrong Spelling
You went to the school, asked for the correction, and the answer came back: the admission register says the same thing as the marksheet. The file will not move. Most people hear that as a refusal, or as the board hiding a mistake. It is neither. The Jharkhand Academic Council corrects a certificate to match its source record, so when the source record repeats the error there is genuinely nothing for it to correct against, and resending the file ten times changes nothing. This is the one case where the Gazette of India actually belongs in a school name problem. Not as a change of name, which is the wrong instrument and the commonest expensive mistake, but as a public notice that quotes the wrong spelling exactly as printed. If the school's admission register carries the same wrong spelling as the JAC certificate, the board cannot correct the certificate, because a board corrects a printed document to match its source record and here the source record agrees with the print. The route that replaces it is a public notice published in Part IV of the Gazette of India by the Department of Publication, Civil Lines, Delhi 110054. The notice names the certificate, quotes the wrong spelling exactly as it is printed, and states the actual and correct name. The most repeated answer tells a student to swear an affidavit, publish a newspaper notice and then apply for a name change notification through the state government gazette, and adds that a court order may be needed. Why JAC Cannot Correct a Certificate the Register Agrees With
A board is not an authority on what your name is. It is an authority on what its own records say. When a school admitted you, a clerk wrote a name into the admission register from whatever paper the family produced that day, and every later document came down that chain: register, registration data, admit card, marksheet, certificate. A correction application asks the board to make the printed document match the register. If the register already matches, the application is asking for nothing.
This is why resending fails
Families often send the same file three or four times, each time with more identity cards attached. The cards are not the problem. The board is not weighing your Aadhaar against its register; it is checking whether its print matches its record, and it does.
Why it happens so often here
A name spoken in Santali, Mundari, Kurukh, Ho, Nagpuri, Bhojpuri, Bengali or Urdu, written into a Hindi register by ear on admission day, is how most of these entries were made. Nobody did anything wrong. The written form simply became fixed at that moment.
What the gazette does instead
It does not argue with the register. It puts on public record, in a Government publication, that the name printed on a named certificate was wrongly written and that your actual and correct name is the other one. Offices then read the two together.
Confirm the Register Really Carries the Error, in Writing
A gazette costs money and six weeks, so it is worth an hour to be sure you are in this case and not in the ordinary one. We see files where the school said the register was the same and it was not; somebody had checked the wrong year, or read the registration data instead of the admission register.

The instrument is chosen by its wording, and the two available wordings say opposite things. Get this wrong and you will pay the fee, wait six weeks, and hold a document that argues against you at the verification counter.
The public notice, which is yours
It runs as a public notice, names each certificate in turn, quotes the wrong spelling exactly as it is printed on that certificate, and states that the actual and correct name is the other one. The sense is: this document misspelt my name, and here is my name.
What it needs from you: the exact printed string, the certificate's name, number and year, your father's or husband's name and your full address.
The change of name, which is not
It runs as hitherto known as one name, shall hereafter be known as another. The sense is: that name really was mine, and I have now chosen a different one. For a misspelling that is untrue, and a panel reading it will treat your old certificate as belonging to a different, earlier identity.

Get the school's written confirmation
On letterhead, that the admission register carries the same entry as the certificate. Keep it with your file even though it does not go to Delhi.
Fix the exact strings
Write down the wrong name exactly as printed and the correct name exactly as you want it, then read both aloud letter by letter with someone else. Everything else copies these two lines.

One Public Notice for Several Certificates or Several Children
The same wrong spelling rarely sits on one paper alone. It usually runs across the Class 10 certificate, the Class 12 certificate, the transfer certificate and sometimes a caste certificate, because each was copied from the one before. And in a family where two or three children went to the same school, the same clerk's habit produced the same error for all of them.
Name every certificate in one notice
The notice can take each certificate in turn, naming it with its number and year and quoting the wrong spelling as printed on that one. One fee, one publication, one waiting period, several documents settled.
A parent can publish for the children
Where the error is in the parent's name across several children's certificates, the parent publishes once and every child's file uses it. This is the cheapest fix available for a family in this situation.
An alias, where two names are both in use
If two forms of your name genuinely sit on different documents and both are in active use, the alias route can record them as one person. Each extra alias carries a small additional fee.
What Happens to the Marksheet After the Notice Is Published
Here is the part most pages leave out, because it is the part that sells least. A published public notice does not reach into a school cupboard and rewrite the admission register, and it does not automatically produce a reprinted marksheet. What it does is settle, on Government record, which name is yours.
Download and keep several copies
The PDF is free from egazette.gov.in once published, and needs no attestation for use in India. Print several and keep the gazette number, the date and the page written on each covering letter you send.
Take it back to the school and the board
Submit it with a fresh application through the school. Some boards will annotate or reissue on that basis and some will not, which is why asking first matters. If they will, this is the moment the certificate itself changes.
Then align everything else
