Gazette Name Change Time and Fees in Jharkhand
Two questions come before every gazette file in Jharkhand: how long and how much. The honest answers are three to seven weeks from the day you swear the affidavit to the day your notice appears in Part IV, and a Government fee of commonly Rs 1,100 for an adult, paid only on BharatKosh, on top of a few thousand rupees of notary, newspaper and postage costs that go to other people. A gazette name change from Jharkhand takes three to seven weeks end to end and costs the Government fee plus a few thousand rupees of other people's charges. The time breaks down as: the affidavit at your district notary on day one or two; the two newspaper notices printed over the next two to five days, with the pages bought on the day; the proforma, CD, letter and BharatKosh payment on one further day; two to four working days in the post from any Jharkhand post office to Civil Lines, Delhi; and then the Department of Publication's processing and the weekly Part IV release, commonly 30 to 45 days from delivery. The Government fee is commonly Rs 1,100 for an adult's change of name, Rs 1,700 for a minor, Rs 1,350 for a public notice of a wrongly written name, and Rs 250 for each alias, paid only at bharatkosh.gov.in in the applicant's own name; the Department revises its charges each financial year and refunds none of them. Around that sit the third-party costs: stamp paper and notary commonly Rs 100 to Rs 500, the two newspaper notices Rs 800 to Rs 4,000 at actual classified rates, typing, photographs, a CD and photocopies under Rs 200, and tracked post at actual cost. So an ordinary Ranchi case costs roughly Rs 2,200 to Rs 5,800 all in, of which only the Rs 1,100 is a Government charge, and our own charge is quoted per case on top and shown separately. Nothing buys speed: there is no tatkal, no fast track, no priority fee and no counter to expedite at, and any offer of a "gazette in seven days" is either a State route that does not exist in Jharkhand or a promise nobody can keep. What costs time is a returned file, about six weeks and the fee again.

The result is that a family in Ranchi plans for one week and one thousand rupees and is surprised twice. Every day and every rupee on this page belongs to one of these steps, so here is the sequence itself with what each paper is and what it costs you in time. There is no Gazette office in Jharkhand; the file goes to the Department of Publication in Delhi in your own name.

Proforma, CD and request letter, day 7 to 8
The Department's proforma typed in two copies, headed "No. ADVT IV /", signed in the old name, two witnesses with full addresses and pin codes, two photographs, self-attested IDs of you and both witnesses; a CD with the notice in Word without the witness portion plus a signed certificate that soft and hard copy match; a request letter to the Controller of Publications. Reading the published notice
The e-Gazette PDF carries the Gazette of India number, the Part IV heading, the date of publication, the page number and your notice in its own paragraph. Every office reads the number, the date and the page; write them on every covering letter. A notice with a misprint is corrected by corrigendum within six months, free where the press erred; a corrected notice is what each office gets.
What Makes a Jharkhand Gazette File Slow, and What Cannot Be Hurried

Why There Is No Tatkal or Fast Track for the Gazette of India
No priority fee exists
The Department's fee list has a charge for a change of name, a minor and a public notice, and nothing for speed. There is no urgent category on BharatKosh and no counter in Delhi that accepts extra money to move a file up.
What the "seven day gazette" offers really are
Usually a State gazette route, which exists in some States and does not in Jharkhand, and which the State Press here stopped in July 2025 in any case; or an affidavit and newspaper package renamed; or simply a promise made by someone who cannot keep it and does not refund.
What a desk can honestly shorten
Your own four to eight days, by having the wording, the drafts and the witnesses ready; and the six-week risk of a return, by checking the five papers against each other before the envelope is sealed. Nobody, including us, can shorten the Department's queue.
