The Anchor Is the Father, Not You: How Every Office Corrects a Father's Name
A father's name on your document records who your father is, and the proof of who he is lies in his own records. JAC, the PAN portal, the passport office, the Circle Officer and the Registrar of Births each ask the same question when the field is wrong: what do the father's own documents say? If they carry the correct name, the office corrects yours against them and nothing more is needed. If his own documents disagree with each other, "Bishnu Mahato" on his Class 10 and "Bishnu Mahto" on his Aadhaar, the family settles his spelling first, from his oldest document, and brings his records to it, because no office will pick one of two fathers for you.

The Two Gazette of India Instruments That Exist for a Father's Name, and the One Everyone Files by Mistake
1. His own change of name
Filed by the father, in his old name, with his affidavit, his two newspaper notices, his proforma and his fee: the ordinary change-of-name process on the gazette page. Once published, every child's record is corrected to his new name against the Gazette and his updated Aadhaar. A father who has simply adopted a surname the family never wrote is in this case.
2. A public notice of his name wrongly written
Filed by the child, or once by the father for all his children, on the public-notice proforma, quoting the wrong form exactly as printed on each certificate, with its number, issuer and date, and the correct form. The certificates are not altered; the notice is carried to every verification. The mechanics are on the public notice page.
The one filed by mistake
The child's own change of name, filed in the belief that it will "change the father's name in my documents". It changes the child's name field and nothing else; the father's field stays as printed, and the Rs 1,100 buys no correction. The pages promising that a Gazette is "legally compulsory" for a father's mismatch are describing this mistake.
Central Gazette Name Change Process From Jharkhand, Step by Step, For a Father's Name: the Two Instruments That Exist
Only two Gazette of India instruments exist for a father's name. The first is the FATHER'S OWN change of name, filed by him in his own name if he has chosen a new name, which every record of his children then follows. The second is a PUBLIC NOTICE declaring the father's name wrongly written on specified certificates, filed by the child, or by the father once for all his children, quoting each misprint exactly. A father's name on a child's document is never changed by the child's own change of name, and a spelling correction against the father's documents needs no Gazette at all. There is no Gazette office in Jharkhand and no State Gazette route; the file goes to the Department of Publication in Delhi in the applicant's own name. The e-Gazette PDF carries the Gazette of India number, the Part IV heading, the date of publication, the page number and your notice in its own paragraph. JAC, the PAN portal, the Passport Seva counter and the Circle Officer read the number, the date and the page; write them on every covering letter. A notice with a misprint is corrected by corrigendum within six months, free where the press erred; a corrected notice is what each office gets.

Correcting a Deceased Father's Name on Your Jharkhand Documents
The evidence
His death certificate, in whichever spelling it carries; any surviving document of his, an old Aadhaar, EPIC, service book, pension order, khatiyan or land record; your own birth certificate; the school's admission register; an elder sibling's Class 10 certificate. The offices read these as they would read his Aadhaar.
Where nothing survives
The public notice in the Gazette of India is the instrument, declaring his name wrongly written on the certificates you name, with an affidavit by you and, where possible, an elder relative. The death certificate is attached to the affidavit.
Inheritance and the khatiyan
Where the land record is in his name in one spelling and your certificates in another, the Circle Officer wants the link before any succession; the property page covers the correction of the recorded name and the CNT and SPT care.
The Married Daughter's Father, and the Mother's Name
A married daughter keeps her father
- Her Class 10 certificate, caste certificate, birth certificate and PAN name her father before and after marriage; that is correct and is not corrected to the husband.
- The voter roll's relation field and the ration card's relation to the head may be changed from father to husband if she chooses; the passport records both parents and adds the spouse separately.
- A caste certificate issued on the husband's name is wrong in law; the Jharkhand High Court's 2026 ruling on the caste certificate page arose from that error.
The mother's name follows the same rules
- The JAC certificate, the passport and the birth certificate carry the mother's name, and panels read it the same way; her own Aadhaar and Class 10 certificate are the anchor.
- A mother's name printed as "Sunita Devi" on one certificate and "Sunita Kumari" on another is the Devi-versus-Kumari case on the surname page, corrected against her documents.
- The same two Gazette instruments, her own change of name or a public notice, are the only ones that exist for her field.
