Caste Certificate Name Correction Through JharSewa in Jharkhand
Look for a correction service on JharSewa and you will not find one, which is the first thing worth knowing. A caste certificate is not edited. A fresh one is issued under one of the listed services, and the fresh application is read against your identity documents. So this page is about operating the portal properly: registering, which the requirements document describes as "Register Yourself (Citizen registered online at JHARSEWA portal using mobile number and email id)", checking your entitlement before you apply, choosing between the four routes the portal recognises, tracking the application, and using the "Verify your Certificate" function that asks for an "Application Reference Number" and a "Token". And we will tell you plainly where the published information runs out, because the appellate authority fields on the requirements document are simply blank.
Stop searching the portal for a correction option, because there is not one, and understanding why saves the whole trip. A caste certificate is issued fresh rather than amended, so what you are doing is applying again, under the correct one of the separately listed caste certificate services, with your papers already agreeing with each other. Second, register before you do anything else. The requirements document describes the step as "Register Yourself (Citizen registered online at JHARSEWA portal using mobile number and email id)", so have a mobile number and an email address you actually use, because the acknowledgement and the status both travel through them. Third, check your entitlement first rather than guessing at the service. The portal's own instruction is to "Click on the option Citizen Section--> Check Your Entitlement", and it also carries a "Prerequisite for Applying" section and a "Download Declarations" section, which is where the self declaration comes from. Fourth, pick your route deliberately. The portal recognises applying "Online," "Kiosk," or "In person", and the kiosk route is itself split into a "CSC(Pragya Kendra)", a "Jan Suvidha Kendra" and a "Govt. Approved Private Kiosk". Doing it yourself online is the only one of the four with nobody between you and the office. Fifth, keep the reference number. There is a "Track Application Status Report" and, under login, a "View Status of Application", and separately a "Verify your Certificate" function that requires an "Application Reference Number" and a "Token". That last one is how an employer or a college checks your certificate without you, so the reference number is worth as much as the certificate. Sixth, the Scheduled Tribe service publishes a limit of "30 Day" excluding Government holidays. The appellate authority fields on the requirements document are blank, so we print no appeal officer and tell you to ask instead.
Why JharSewa Has No Caste Certificate Correction Service
People spend a long time hunting for the right menu item and conclude that the portal is badly designed. It is not. The option is missing because the thing it would do is not a thing the office does. A caste certificate, once issued, is not struck through and initialled. What exists on the portal is a set of services for issuing a certificate, and the answer to a wrong name is to obtain a correctly written one.
That single fact reorganises the whole job, because a fresh application is read from the beginning. Everything in the file is looked at again, which is an opportunity as much as a risk: it means the papers in the new application have to agree with each other before it goes in. A fresh application carrying the same contradiction that produced the first wrong certificate will produce a second one.
| What you are looking for | What the portal actually offers |
|---|---|
| A correction or edit option for my existing certificate | It does not exist. The listed services issue a certificate. You apply again, correctly |
| A way to upload a correction request against my old reference number | Not a function on the portal. The old reference number matters for verification, not for editing |
| Somewhere to explain what went wrong last time | The fresh application is not a place to argue. It is a place to submit papers that agree with each other |
| One caste certificate service to apply under | Several are listed separately, by category and by whether the certificate is the State or the Central format. Pick before you start |
| A form to download and fill in by hand | That does exist, because the portal offers applying "In person" by downloading forms, alongside the online and kiosk routes |
How to Register on JharSewa and Check Your Entitlement
Two steps come before the application itself, and skipping either of them is how people end up filing under the wrong service.
The first is registration. The requirements document describes it as "Register Yourself (Citizen registered online at JHARSEWA portal using mobile number and email id)", and the portal carries "Register Yourself" in its top navigation alongside "Login" and a "Forgot Password" option. Use a mobile number and an email address that you personally control and actually read, because the acknowledgement, the reference number and the status all travel through them. A number belonging to a shop owner or a relative is how people lose a reference number they later need.
The second is checking what you are entitled to apply for. The portal's own instruction is to "Click on the option Citizen Section--> Check Your Entitlement", after which you select your profile details and search for the services that apply to you. There is also a "Prerequisite for Applying" section in the main navigation and a "Download Declarations" section, which is where the self declaration form comes from, along with "Support" and "FAQS".
| The function, as the portal names it | What you use it for |
|---|---|
| "Register Yourself" | Creating the account, using a mobile number and email id. Use ones you control, because everything else arrives through them |
| "Citizen Section--> Check Your Entitlement" | Finding which service actually fits you before applying, by selecting your profile details and searching |
| "Prerequisite for Applying" | Reading what is needed before you start, rather than discovering it halfway through the form |
| "Download Declarations" | Getting the self declaration yourself. The services ask for a "Self Declaration by Self or Parents (In Case of Minors)", and an adult signs her own |
| "Login" and "Forgot Password" | Getting back in later, which matters because the status lives behind the login as well as on the public tracker |
| "Support" and "FAQS" | The first place to look when something on the portal refuses, and free, unlike the shop that will offer to sort it out |
One practical note on the declaration, because it is the document people treat most carelessly. The self declaration is a statement you are making, in your own name, about your own community and your own particulars. Read it before you sign it, sign it in the name your current records carry, and keep a photograph of the signed page on your own phone, because if a query comes back months later you will want to know exactly what you declared.
Four Ways to Apply for a Caste Certificate in Jharkhand
The portal offers applying "Online," "Kiosk," or "In person", and the kiosk route is itself several different kinds of place. The requirements document names a "CSC(Pragya Kendra)", a "Jan Suvidha Kendra" and a "Govt. Approved Private Kiosk". That is four practical choices, and they are not equivalent.
| The route | What it is good and bad at |
|---|---|
| Online, yourself, after registering | The only one of the four with nobody between you and the office. You control the spelling in every field, you hold the reference number, and no charge is added on top of whatever the Government takes. Our default recommendation |
| A CSC, or Pragya Kendra | The sensible choice if you are not comfortable with the form, and the most widely available across Jharkhand's districts. Watch the operator type your name and check it before submission, because their typing becomes your certificate |
| A Jan Suvidha Kendra | Named as a route in its own right. Same warning applies: the spelling on the screen is the spelling you will live with |
| A Government approved private kiosk | Listed as "Govt. Approved Private Kiosk". Note the word approved, and ask to see what makes this one approved, because an unapproved shop taking your papers is a different thing entirely |
| In person, on a downloaded form | Still available, because the portal offers applying in person by downloading forms or visiting the office. Useful where the internet or the documents are awkward, and it gives you a paper acknowledgement to hold |
A word about what the kiosk is entitled to charge, because this is where readers most often feel cheated and cannot tell whether they were. We verified no fee, either for the certificate or for the kiosk service, on any of the pages we read. So we print no amount. What we can tell you is the sensible behaviour: ask what the charge is before anything is typed, ask what part of it is the Government charge and what part is the operator's, and ask for a receipt. A refusal to answer any of those three questions before you have handed anything over tells you what you need to know.
Tracking a JharSewa Application and Verifying the Certificate
There are two separate things here and people confuse them constantly. Tracking tells you where your application has reached. Verifying tells anybody whether a certificate is genuine. You need both, and for different reasons.
For tracking, the portal carries a "Track Application Status Report" link, and behind the login there is a "View Status of Application". So the status is reachable both publicly with the reference number and privately through your own account, which is worth knowing if you applied through a kiosk and never got an account of your own.
For verification, and this is the more interesting function, the portal offers "Verify your Certificate", and it asks for two things: an "Application Reference Number" and a "Token".
| The function | Who uses it, and what it needs |
|---|---|
| "Track Application Status Report" | You, while waiting. Reachable publicly, which matters if somebody else registered on your behalf and you have no login |
| "View Status of Application" | You, from inside your own account, which is one more reason to register yourself rather than let a shop do it |
| "Verify your Certificate" | Anybody you show the certificate to. It asks for an "Application Reference Number" and a "Token" |
| The reference number | Worth as much as the certificate. It also matters if you later need the Central format, because that service asks for the reference number of the certificate already issued by the Circle Officer |
| A dated acknowledgement | The thing that makes a delay measurable. Without it the published time limit is of no use to you at all |
One limitation stated plainly. We are describing the functions the portal presents and the labels it uses, not promising how quickly any of them will reflect your particular file. Portals lag, and a status that has not moved for a few days is not evidence of anything. What is evidence is a dated acknowledgement and a published time limit, which is the subject of the next section.
What to Do When a JharSewa Caste Certificate Application Stalls
This is the section we would most like to fill in completely and cannot, so we are going to tell you exactly what is published and exactly where it stops.
What is published is a time limit. The JharSewa service page for the Scheduled Tribe caste certificate states "30 Day", excluding Government holidays, and describes the service as a statutory one under the Department of Personnel, Administrative Reforms and Raj Bhasa. That is a real and usable number, and it is the reason a dated acknowledgement matters so much: thirty days from an undated application is thirty days from nothing.
What is also published is a law behind it. Jharkhand has a service guarantee statute, the Jharkhand Rajya Sewa Dene ki Guarantee Act, 2011, under which a designated officer must provide a notified service within the stipulated time limit or record the reasons for a rejection in writing. We set that Act out at greater length on the income certificate page. The practical value of it is not a penalty you will collect. It is that a written refusal naming a reason is something you are entitled to ask for, and a written reason is the only thing that tells you which entry actually failed.
| The question | What we can and cannot tell you |
|---|---|
| How long should it take | Published: "30 Day" on the Scheduled Tribe service page, excluding Government holidays |
| Is there a law behind that | Yes. The service page calls the service statutory, and the State's service guarantee Act requires the notified service within the stipulated time or written reasons for a rejection |
| Who is the first appellate authority | We print nobody. The field is blank on the requirements document. Ask your Circle Office in writing |
| How many days to file an appeal | We verified no number and print none. This is exactly the sort of figure private websites invent |
| What is worth doing at thirty days | A written request for the decision or the reasons, quoting your reference number and the date on your acknowledgement. Not another visit to explain yourself verbally |
| What is worth doing before thirty days | Very little, and that is worth knowing too. Chasing a file inside its own published period rarely helps and uses up goodwill you may want later |
One more thing about rejections that applies here and to every certificate on this website. A rejection is far more useful than silence, so a written rejection is a good outcome rather than a bad one. It names the entry that failed. And because there is no correction service, the response to a rejection is a fresh application with that one entry fixed, which is a small job when you know what the entry is and an impossible one when you are guessing.
How to Apply on JharSewa for a Correctly Written Caste Certificate
Settle the spelling before you open the portal at all
Against your oldest document, usually the Class 10 certificate, and make sure your Aadhaar already agrees with it. A fresh application carrying the old contradiction produces a second wrong certificate. See caste certificate against Aadhaar.
Register yourself, with your own mobile number and email
The step is described as "Register Yourself (Citizen registered online at JHARSEWA portal using mobile number and email id)". Use a number and an address you control, because the reference number and the status travel through them.
Check your entitlement before choosing a service
The portal's instruction is to "Click on the option Citizen Section--> Check Your Entitlement". The caste certificate services are listed separately by category and by format, and a wrong choice fails rather than redirects.
Read the prerequisites and download the declaration yourself
There is a "Prerequisite for Applying" section and a "Download Declarations" section. Know what you are signing rather than signing what is handed to you, and sign in the name your current records carry.
Get your own family's papers together, not your in laws'
Proof of caste in Jharkhand is a land record from your own family's side, along with the residence and identity proofs. This is the step that decides the application. See caste certificate after marriage.
Pick your route, preferring to do it yourself online
The choices are "Online," "Kiosk," or "In person", and the kiosks include a "CSC(Pragya Kendra)", a "Jan Suvidha Kendra" and a "Govt. Approved Private Kiosk". Online yourself is the only route with nobody in between.
Read the name on the screen letter by letter before submitting
Yours, your father's, and the date of birth. There is no correction service afterwards, so an operator's keystroke becomes a document you will produce for the rest of your working life.
Write down the reference number and keep the acknowledgement
Separately from the phone that has the photographs. The reference number drives the tracker, the verification function and any later Central format application, so it is worth as much as the certificate.
Track it, and wait out the published thirty days
Using "Track Application Status Report" or "View Status of Application" behind your login. Chasing a file inside its own published period rarely helps, and a stalled status for a few days means nothing.
At thirty days, ask in writing, and ask who the appellate authority is
Quote the reference number and the date on the acknowledgement. Ask for the decision or the written reasons, and ask who the first appellate authority is, because the published field is blank and only your own office can tell you.
Central Gazette Process for a Name From Jharkhand, and Where It Fits a JharSewa Application
No district in Jharkhand has a gazette counter, so a genuine file goes from Ranchi, Jamshedpur, Dhanbad, Bokaro, Hazaribagh, Deoghar or anywhere else in the state to the Department of Publication, Civil Lines, Delhi 110054, and the notice publishes in Part IV of the Gazette of India. As reported in July 2025 the Finance Department stopped personal name change notifications from the Jharkhand Government Press with immediate effect, so there is no state alternative to fall back on.
The Eight Steps of a Name File Sent From Jharkhand
Settle the final name first
Letter by letter, with the spacing you want, and then use exactly that everywhere, Aadhaar included. A corrigendum after publication is a second fee and a second wait.
Pick the category, then its proforma
A genuine change of name is change of Name Adult or Major. A wrongly typed spelling is the public notice for a wrongly written name. Twelve categories exist and only one is yours.
Type the proforma in duplicate
Two originals with two witnesses giving signature, full name, address and mobile number on both copies. A change of name is signed in the old name; a public notice is signed in your own name.
Fill the employment field if it is a change of name
The adult proforma asks for the post of the applicant and the office or company name. A student or a homemaker should still complete it rather than leaving it blank, because a blank field brings the file back.
Publish and keep the original paper
One of the daily local leading newspapers, carrying both names in full, the father or husband name and the residential address. The whole original paper goes in the file, not a cutting.
Pay only through BharatKosh
The Non Tax Receipt Portal and nowhere else since October 2018. Select the Department of Publication by name, read the amount the portal shows on the day, pay in your own name and print the e-receipt.
Check every date, then post it yourself
Nothing in the file older than one year. Personally or by post or courier only, never through an agent or advocate. Photocopy everything first, because nothing sent in comes back.
Read the notice, then update in the right order
Check every word the day it publishes, download the e-Gazette copy, and then update the Aadhaar first, because the system leverages it for unique identification, and let the bank account, the voter entry and any scheme records follow after it in that order. The fresh JharSewa application comes last of all, because the Circle Office reads the identity papers you have already put right.
The Five Papers in the File, and What Is Checked in Each
| The paper | What is checked in it, clause by clause |
|---|---|
| 1. The proforma, in duplicate | That it is the right category format; the existing full name exactly as your documents carry it; the new full name exactly as settled; the father or husband name; the full address with pin code; the post and office or company name where it is a change of name; the signature in the right name for the category; two witnesses complete with signature, full name, address and mobile number |
| 2. The affidavit or undertaking | The same names and address as the proforma, word for word, with wording matching the category. On Rs 100 non-judicial stamp paper as our safe default |
| 3. The original newspaper | The original paper, not a cutting; the paper name and date of publication visible; both names carried; the father or husband name and residential address; dated within the last year |
| 4. Photographs, identity proof and any category paper | Two self attested passport photographs; self attested identity and address proof matching the proforma address; both witnesses proofs; and, in a public notice file, the attested photocopy of the connected document carrying the error |
| 5. The CD, its certificate and the BharatKosh receipt | MS Word, without the witness portion, with the name typed in place of the signature; the certificate that the hard copy and the soft copy are the same; the forwarding letter to the Controller of Publication with a telephone number and email; the e-receipt |
The posting detail is on the sending the file to Delhi page, the change of name wording on the proforma format page and the public notice wording on the public notice proforma page, the charge by category on the fee and undertaking page, the reasons files come back on the rejection reasons page, and the download on the download page.
What Applying for a Caste Certificate Through JharSewa Costs
Short section, and deliberately so. The pages we read publish almost nothing about cost, and we would rather tell you that than print a number we cannot stand behind.
| Item | What we can and cannot tell you |
|---|---|
| The Government charge for the certificate | We print no figure. No fee is stated on the JharSewa pages we read. Ask before anything is typed, and get the amount on a receipt |
| A kiosk or Pragya Kendra service charge | We verified none and print none. Ask which part of what you are asked for is the Government charge and which part is the operator's, before you hand anything over |
| Applying online yourself | No operator's charge on top, because there is no operator. The cheapest of the four routes, and the one that keeps the reference number in your hands |
| Getting the land record from your own family's side | A record room charge we have not verified. Worth paying without hesitating, because it is the document the application actually turns on |
| An appeal, if it comes to that | We verified no appeal fee, no appeal authority and no appeal time limit, because the appellate fields on the requirements document are blank. Ask at the Circle Office |
| A Central Gazette notice | Rarely needed here. Paid only through BharatKosh, revised each financial year, never refunded. See the cost page |
| What we charge | Quoted on the call once we have seen your papers. If the answer is that you can do this yourself online in an evening, we will tell you that and charge you nothing |
Myths About Correcting a Caste Certificate on JharSewa
| What people believe | What is actually so |
|---|---|
| There is a correction option somewhere on the portal | There is not. The listed services issue certificates. A wrong name is answered with a fresh, correct application |
| Registration can use anybody's mobile number | It can, and it is a mistake. The reference number and status travel through that number, so use one you control |
| I can pick the service as I go | Check your entitlement first, through "Citizen Section--> Check Your Entitlement". A wrong service fails rather than redirects |
| The kiosk operator will make sure the spelling is right | The operator types what the queue allows time for. Read the screen letter by letter yourself before submission |
| A Pragya Kendra is the only way to apply | The portal recognises "Online," "Kiosk," or "In person", and online yourself is the route with nobody in between |
| Any shop with a computer is an approved kiosk | The listed route is a "Govt. Approved Private Kiosk". Approved is the operative word |
| Once I have the certificate the reference number does not matter | It drives "Verify your Certificate", which asks for an "Application Reference Number" and a "Token", and any later Central format application |
| Tracking and verifying are the same thing | Tracking is for you while waiting. Verifying is for anybody checking a certificate is genuine |
| Going to the office every week speeds it up | The Scheduled Tribe service publishes "30 Day". Inside that period, visits rarely help; after it, a written request does |
| The appeal officer and the appeal deadline are fixed and known | The appellate fields on the requirements document are blank. Anybody quoting them confidently should tell you their source |
| A rejection is the worst outcome | Silence is worse. A written rejection names the entry that failed, which turns the next application into a small job |

JharSewa Caste Certificate Application Help Across Jharkhand
We should say plainly that a great many readers of this page do not need us at all, and we would rather you knew that before you called. If your papers already agree with each other and you are comfortable with a form, you can register, check your entitlement, download the declaration and apply online yourself in an evening, with nobody between you and the office and nobody's charge on top. Where we genuinely help is the part before the portal: reading your existing certificate, your Aadhaar and your Class 10 certificate together, telling you which spelling to keep, making sure your identity papers agree before a fresh application is filed, and telling you which of the separately listed services fits. If the published thirty days pass, we draft the written request for the decision or the reasons, and for the name of the appellate authority that the requirements document leaves blank. We help people across Ranchi, Jamshedpur, Dhanbad, Bokaro, Hazaribagh, Deoghar and every other district, on scans over WhatsApp.
District pages are linked from the services page.
Send the old certificate before you open the portal
Send the existing caste certificate, your Aadhaar and your Class 10 certificate before you open JharSewa, because there is no correction service on the portal and the fresh application is only as good as the agreement between those three papers. If you have already applied, send the acknowledgement with its date and the reference number, and if it has been refused, the written reason. Tell us in one line what has happened: you are about to apply, a kiosk has typed something wrongly, the status has not moved, or the thirty days have passed with nothing. And tell us whether you registered yourself or somebody registered on your behalf, because that decides whether you can see the status behind a login or only on the public tracker. Our first reply tells you which spelling to keep, whether your papers agree, which of the listed services fits, and what to write if the file has stalled. If the answer is that you can do this yourself online in an evening, we will tell you that and charge you nothing. Details on the contact page.

We could not open the full text of the Act on India Code while writing this page, which shows the Act's details but not its sections, so we quote no section here |
| What we could not verify | The appeal route. The appellate authority fields are blank on the requirements document, so this page names no appeal officer, no appeal deadline and no appeal fee. We also print no certificate fee and no kiosk charge, because none is stated on the pages we read, and no timeline for any caste certificate service other than the Scheduled Tribe one whose page we read |
| What this page deliberately leaves to other pages | Which record proves your community and why, on the caste certificate after marriage page; and the loop between the caste certificate and the Aadhaar, on the caste certificate against Aadhaar page. This page covers only operating the portal |
