Name Change in Education Documents in Jharkhand

A JAC Class 10 certificate is the anchor document for every Jharkhand resident: JSSC, JPSC, the Railways, the PSUs and every university judge every other record against it. Which is why a name wrong on it, or different on the degree, causes more rejections than any Aadhaar or PAN error. This page is the education cluster for Jharkhand: the three windows in which JAC corrects a name and what each needs, the register test that decides correction or gazette, the public notice when the register is wrong, CBSE and ICSE schools in the state, the nine universities and their linking letters, Bihar Board certificates from before 2000, the father's-name field, and what recruitment panels actually check.

Quick answer

A name change in education documents in Jharkhand depends on which of three things you have. A JAC marksheet or certificate that misprints a name the school's admission register has right is corrected by JAC through the school, on the council's form and fee, from its office at Gyandeep Campus, Namkum, Ranchi; before the admit card it is done by the student on JAC's data correction portal for free. A certificate where the register carries the same wrong spelling cannot be corrected by JAC and is bridged by a public notice in the Gazette of India quoting the misprint exactly, at commonly Rs 1,350. A name you have chosen to change is never printed onto an old certificate by JAC or any university; a change of name in the Gazette of India at commonly Rs 1,100 links the certificate to the new name, and universities issue a linking letter on it. Recruitment panels test consistency across the Class 10 certificate, Aadhaar and the caste certificate, so the school register is the first thing to check and the Gazette the last.

The pages ranking for name change in education documents in Jharkhand say that minor corrections are "relatively simple" and major changes need "affidavit, newspaper publication and Gazette notification", then leave you to work out what JAC does with either. One walks through a "Jharkhand Board marksheet correction online" that is the pre-admit-card data window, not a certificate correction. None of them says the thing JAC's own process turns on: the council corrects against the school's admission register, and nothing else.

This page is arranged around that. Three windows, one test, two Gazette instruments, nine universities, and the panels at the end. The affidavit and the newspaper stages that a Gazette needs are on their own pages; the two Gazette proformas are on the gazette name change page and the public notice page.

At a glance

The anchor
The JAC Class 10 certificate; every panel and university judges the rest against it
JAC's test
The school's admission register. Right register: JAC corrects. Wrong register: public notice
Window 1
Before the admit card: student data correction on the JAC portal, free, by student login
Window 2
After the result, through the school: JAC's correction form, the register extract, the council's fee
Window 3
Years later: through the school or the DEO if closed, same form; a public notice if the register is wrong
A chosen new name
Never printed onto an old certificate; the Gazette of India change of name links it
Universities
Correct against their own admission and examination records; issue a linking letter on a Gazette
CBSE and ICSE schools
Their own pre-result windows through the school; post-certificate corrections on documents, changes on the Gazette
Bihar Board before 2000
BSEB, Patna; corrections slow or closed; the public notice bridges
Panels
JSSC, JPSC, Railways, PSUs: consistency across Class 10, Aadhaar and caste certificate

Key takeaways

  • Ask the school for the admission register before anything else. It decides whether JAC can correct the certificate or a public notice is needed.
  • The cheapest window is before the admit card, on JAC's own portal, for free. The next cheapest is through the school after the result. The expensive one is years later with a wrong register.
  • JAC and the universities never print a chosen new name onto an old certificate. A change of name is bridged by the Gazette, and the certificate stays as it was.
  • Universities correct their own misprints and issue linking letters; degrees are not reprinted for a name change.
  • Panels test consistency, not correctness. Class 10, Aadhaar and the caste certificate must say the same thing, in the same script.
  • A Bihar Board certificate from before 15 November 2000 is a Patna matter, and in practice a public notice.

The Register Test: Whether JAC Can Correct Your Certificate or a Gazette Is Needed

Name change in education documents in Jharkhand: JAC corrects against the school admission register, universities issue a linking letter, the Gazette bridges the rest
The certificate, the degree, and the register they were both printed from.

The Jharkhand Academic Council prints a certificate from the data the school sends at registration, and that data comes from the school's admission register, the book in which the child's name was entered on the first day. JAC corrects a certificate only where the register shows a different, correct spelling from what was printed. If the register carries the same wrong spelling, JAC has nothing to correct against, and no affidavit, newspaper or argument changes that. The whole route is decided by one look at one book.

JAC's Three Name Correction Windows: Free, Cheap, and Expensive

The three JAC name correction windows in Jharkhand, who acts, what it needs and what it costs
WindowWhenWho actsWhat it needsCost
1. Data correctionAfter Class 9 or Class 11 registration and before the admit card; JAC opens the window by notice each yearThe student, by student login on jac.jharkhand.gov.in, or the schoolThe examinee information sheet checked against the birth certificate and Aadhaar; the school confirmsFree
2. Post-result correctionAfter the result, usually within the yearThe school forwards; JAC at Namkum corrects and reprintsJAC's correction form, the original marksheet and certificate, a certified admission register extract, birth certificate, Aadhaar, the head of school's letter, photographsJAC's prescribed fee
3. Late correctionYears later, at a job or college verificationThe school or the DEO forwards; JAC corrects if the register supports itThe same set, plus the DEO's covering letter where the school is closedJAC's fee; a public notice if the register is wrong
The parent's job is window 1. A wrong spelling caught on the examinee information sheet costs nothing and never reaches a certificate. The same error caught at a JSSC verification ten years later costs a public notice and a seven-week wait, and it stays on the file for life. The minor page sets this timing against the school year.

JAC Certificate Name Correction Through the School, Step by Step

For windows 2 and 3, where the register supports the correction.

1

The register extract

Ask the head of the school for a certified extract of the admission register entry showing the correct spelling. If the school refuses or is closed, the District Education Officer directs it or produces the record.

2

JAC's form and set

The council's correction form for the year, the original marksheet and certificate, the register extract, birth certificate, Aadhaar, the head of school's forwarding letter stating the error, photographs, and the affidavit JAC's form asks for stating the error. The council's fee, by the mode it prescribes.

3

Forwarded to Namkum

The school forwards the set to the Jharkhand Academic Council, Gyandeep Campus, Bargawan, Namkum, Ranchi 834010. Keep the school's receipt; it is the only way to chase the file.

4

Corrected certificate

JAC reprints the marksheet and certificate with the corrected entry, through the school. Then Aadhaar and every other record are corrected to match it, because it is the anchor.

JAC's fee, form and window dates change by notice; the council's website and the school's office carry the current ones. The figures quoted on aggregator sites are not JAC's.

Central Gazette Name Change Process From Jharkhand, Step by Step, Before the Board or University Application

For a chosen new name, a board or university wants an instrument that proves it, and the Gazette of India notification. There is no Gazette office in Jharkhand and no State Gazette route; the file goes to the Department of Publication in Delhi in your own name. Here is the whole Central Gazette process, in the order it happens.

1

Route check and wording, day 0

Confirm that you actually need a gazette: a correction against a correct register does not. Then fix the exact new name, spacing and initials included, against your Class 10 certificate, and confirm it in writing. Every later paper copies this wording.

2

Affidavit, day 1 to 2

Sworn on non-judicial stamp paper before a notary at your district court, in the OLD name as on your current Aadhaar: old name, new name, father's or husband's name, address with pin code, reason, verification clause, notary seal and register number. Stamp paper and notary commonly Rs 100 to Rs 500. Format on the affidavit page.

3

Two newspaper notices, day 3 to 7

One Hindi daily and one English daily in editions that circulate in Jharkhand, identical twenty-word wording quoting the affidavit number and date. Keep the complete original page of each paper, masthead and date visible, two copies. Rs 800 to Rs 4,000 at actual cost. Detail on the newspaper page.

4

Proforma, CD and request letter, day 7 to 8

The Department's proforma typed in two copies, headed "No. ADVT IV /", signed in the old name, two witnesses with full addresses and pin codes, two photographs, self-attested IDs of you and both witnesses; a CD with the notice in Word without the witness portion plus a signed certificate that soft and hard copy match; a request letter to the Controller of Publications. Full list on the documents page.

5

Fee on BharatKosh, day 8

Only on bharatkosh.gov.in, in your own name, selecting the Department of Publication and the Gazette notification purpose: commonly Rs 1,100 for an adult, Rs 1,700 for a minor, revised each financial year, non-refundable. Print the receipt for the file. No demand draft, no cash, no counter anywhere in Jharkhand.

6

Delivered in Delhi in your name, day 8 to 10

The five papers, affidavit and pages in original, to the Department of Publication, Civil Lines, behind Delhi Vidhan Sabha Metro Station, Delhi 110054, in person or by tracked post in the applicant's name. Our Delhi office delivers Jharkhand files in your name. Nothing is returned, so keep a scanned set.

7

Published and downloaded, day 40 to 55

Part IV is released weekly; publication commonly takes 30 to 45 days. Search your old or new name on egazette.gov.in, download the free PDF, and note the Gazette number, date and page. No attestation is needed for use in India. A wrong print is corrected by corrigendum within six months.

8

Then the board or university application

Carry the printed Gazette PDF with the affidavit and both newspaper pages to the school, JAC or the university, and to every later verification, as the sections below explain. The address in the Gazette should match your Aadhaar address. The gazette pillar, with the July 2025 story of the Jharkhand Gazette, is the gazette name change page.

Two proformas, two fees. A chosen new name is a change of name, "hitherto known as", commonly Rs 1,100. A name wrongly written on a certificate is a PUBLIC NOTICE quoting the misprint exactly, commonly Rs 1,350, on the public notice page. Sending one for the other's case returns the file and the fee is not refunded.

Name Correction and the Linking Letter at Jharkhand's Universities

A university corrects a misprint against its own admission and examination record. For a name that has changed, it issues a letter; it does not reprint the degree.

Jharkhand universities, the districts they serve, and where name corrections and linking letters are handled

Jharkhand University of Technology; BIT Mesra; NIT Jamshedpur; IIT (ISM) Dhanbad; RIMS; Central University of JharkhandTechnical, medical and central institutionsEach institution's examination section, on its own correction form

A misprint on the marksheet or degree

  • The university's correction form through the college, with the registration record showing the correct spelling, the original marksheet, the Class 10 certificate and Aadhaar.
  • Where the university's own record carries the same wrong spelling, the public notice in the Gazette of India is the bridge, and the university notes it.
  • Corrected marksheets are reprinted; a corrected degree may be reprinted or annotated by the university's rule.

A name that has changed

  • No university prints a chosen new name onto a degree already conferred.
  • The realistic outcome is a linking letter from the Registrar or Controller stating that the degree in the old name belongs to the person now known by the new name, on the Gazette of India notification.
  • The letter and the Gazette page together satisfy employers, foreign credential evaluators and further admissions.

CBSE, ICSE and Bihar Board Certificates Held by Jharkhand Residents

CBSE schools in Jharkhand

Corrections before the result go through the school's pre-registration and pre-exam windows on the board's portal. After the certificate, CBSE corrects on documents within its rules, and since the Supreme Court's 2020 direction in the Jigya Yadav matter, records a change of name on a Gazette notification with the original entry retained. Applications go through the school to the regional office that serves Jharkhand.

ICSE and ISC schools

The Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations corrects through the school within its own windows; a change after the certificate is on the Gazette, by the council's rule at the time. Ask the school for the current circular.

Bihar Board before 15 November 2000

Anyone who passed matriculation in the undivided state holds a Bihar School Examination Board certificate from Patna. BSEB corrections for old years are slow where they are possible at all, and the record may not be traceable. In practice the public notice in the Gazette of India, quoting the certificate exactly, is the instrument, and it is what JSSC and JPSC read.

The Father's and Mother's Name Fields on a Jharkhand Certificate

A JAC certificate carries the student's name, the father's name and the mother's name, and panels read all three. A father's name printed "Bishnu Mahato" on the Class 10 and "Bishnu Mahto" on the Class 12 is a mismatch of the same weight as the student's own. The same register test applies: if the school's register has the parent's name right, JAC corrects; if the register is wrong, a public notice names the parent's wrong and correct forms, and where several children are affected, the parent publishes one notice for all. A married woman's certificates keep her father's name; that is correct, and the marriage page explains the form-filling trap it causes.

Tribal surnames and the parent line. A Kurukh or Santali surname spelt one way for the child and another for the father on the same certificate is common, because two clerks typed them. Decide one Roman spelling for the family against the father's Class 10 certificate and the caste certificate, and correct the rest to it. The surname page covers the variants.

What JSSC, JPSC, the Railways and the PSUs Check at Document Verification

What recruitment panels in Jharkhand check at document verification and what closes a mismatch
PanelWhat it reads togetherWhat closes a mismatch
JSSC and JPSCClass 10 certificate, Aadhaar, caste and residence certificates, the father's name across all of themA corrected certificate, or a public notice bridging the misprint, published before the verification date
Railway Recruitment Boards, SSC, bankingClass 10 certificate against Aadhaar and the application formThe same; the application must carry the Class 10 spelling
CCL, BCCL, SAIL, HEC, MECON, Tata SteelCertificates, Aadhaar, PAN; the departmental deed pattern for serving staffThe Gazette or public notice in the joining file
Universities and professional councilsClass 10, Class 12, the degree, the registration recordA corrected marksheet, or a linking letter on the Gazette
Foreign credential evaluatorsDegree, transcripts, passportThe linking letter with the Gazette, and the passport re-issued in the same name
Consistency, not correctness. A panel does not care which spelling is "right". It cares that the Class 10 certificate, Aadhaar and the caste certificate agree, letter for letter, in the same script. That is why the Class 10 spelling is the anchor and Aadhaar is corrected to it, not the other way round, and why a public notice must be published before the exam cycle, not after the result.

Education Document Mistakes That Follow a Certificate for Life

Route mistakes

  • Filing a Gazette before asking the school for the register; the correction may have been free.
  • Sending a change of name proforma for a JAC misprint; it is a public notice.
  • Expecting JAC or a university to print a chosen new name onto an old certificate.
  • Correcting Aadhaar to the wrong spelling and then trying to make the certificate match it.

Timing mistakes

  • Not checking the examinee information sheet in window 1, when the fix was free.
  • Publishing a public notice after the JSSC result instead of before the exam cycle.
  • Leaving the father's name mismatch for later; panels read it as their own field.
  • Treating a Bihar Board certificate from the 1990s as something Patna will correct quickly.

Name Change in Education Documents in Jharkhand: Frequently Asked Questions

How do I correct my name on a JAC marksheet or certificate?+
Before the admit card, by student login on JAC's data correction portal, free. After the result, through the school on JAC's correction form with a certified admission register extract, the originals, birth certificate, Aadhaar, the head of school's letter and the council's fee, forwarded to JAC at Namkum. JAC corrects only where the register shows the correct spelling.
What if the school's register has the same wrong spelling?+
Then JAC has nothing to correct against and will not reprint. The instrument is a public notice in the Gazette of India declaring the name wrongly written on that certificate, quoting the misprint exactly, at commonly Rs 1,350. The certificate stays as printed and the notice is carried to every verification; one notice can cover several certificates.
Can JAC print my new name on my old certificate after a gazette?+
No. Neither JAC nor any university prints a chosen new name onto a certificate already issued. A change of name in the Gazette of India at commonly Rs 1,100 links the old certificate to the new name; the certificate itself is unchanged and the Gazette page is what you carry. That is why a child's change is best done before Class 9 registration.
Which spelling should my Aadhaar follow, the certificate or the other way round?+
The JAC Class 10 certificate. Recruitment panels and universities anchor on it, so Aadhaar, PAN and the caste certificate are corrected to the Class 10 spelling. Correcting Aadhaar first and then trying to make the certificate match it is the commonest expensive mistake.
Will my university reprint my degree in the new name?+
Not for a change of name. Ranchi University, Vinoba Bhave, Kolhan, Nilamber-Pitamber, Sido Kanhu Murmu, BBMKU and the technical and medical institutions issue a linking letter from the Registrar or Controller on the Gazette notification, stating that the degree in the old name belongs to you. A misprint against the university's own record is corrected and reprinted on its form.
What is the JAC correction fee?+
Free in the data correction window before the admit card. After the result, the council's prescribed fee, set by JAC's notice for the year and paid by the mode it specifies through the school; the figures on aggregator sites are not JAC's. The Gazette instruments, where needed, are commonly Rs 1,350 for a public notice and Rs 1,100 for a change of name.
My school has closed. Who forwards the correction?+
A closed school's records sit with the District Education Officer or District Superintendent of Education, who can produce the admission register entry or direct a successor school to forward the application. Where the record cannot be found at all, the public notice is the fallback and says so.
My father's name is spelt differently on my Class 10 and Class 12. Does it matter?+
Yes. Panels read the father's name as its own field. The same register test applies: JAC corrects the certificate whose register is right; where the register is wrong, a public notice names the father's wrong and correct forms, and one notice by the father can cover all his children's certificates.
I passed matriculation from Bihar Board in 1998. How do I correct it?+
The certificate is BSEB Patna's, and corrections for old years are slow where they are possible at all; the record may not be traceable. In practice the public notice in the Gazette of India, quoting the certificate exactly, is the instrument, and it is what JSSC and JPSC read at verification.
How do CBSE schools in Jharkhand handle a name correction?+
Before the result, through the school's pre-registration and pre-exam correction windows on the board's portal. After the certificate, CBSE corrects on documents within its rules and, since the Supreme Court's 2020 direction, records a change of name on a Gazette notification while retaining the original entry. Applications go through the school to the regional office that serves Jharkhand.
What does JSSC or JPSC check at document verification?+
Consistency across the Class 10 certificate, Aadhaar, the caste and residence certificates and the father's name on each, letter for letter and in the same script. A mismatch is a listed rejection reason. A corrected certificate or a public notice must be in hand before the verification date, so publish before the exam cycle.
When is the best time to fix a child's certificate name?+
In JAC's free data correction window before the admit card, by checking the examinee information sheet against the birth certificate. A change of name for a child is best completed before the Class 9 registration so the certificate prints right the first time; the minor page sets the timing against the school year.
Can one gazette notice cover my Class 10, Class 12 and degree?+
Yes. A public notice names each certificate with its number, issuer and date and quotes each misprint exactly, for one fee. For a change of name, one Gazette notification links every old certificate to the new name; each university then issues its own linking letter on it.
Does the Jharkhand Gazette work for a certificate name change?+
Not today. The Jharkhand Gazette carries Government notifications and, as reported, stopped printing personal name changes in July 2025; the practice is under inquiry. JAC, the universities and the panels read the Gazette of India, Part IV, from Delhi.
