University Degree Name Correction in Jharkhand
Start with the fact that explains almost every degree name problem in this state. Your university did not choose how to spell your name. It copied it from the certificate you produced at admission, which for nearly everybody is the Class 10 certificate. So when a degree carries a spelling you do not recognise, the question is never only what the university will do. It is which record the university copied, whether that record is right, and whether fixing the degree alone will leave you with two documents that still disagree. There is a second thing worth knowing before you begin. On an old degree, most universities will not print you a fresh certificate in a different name. What you can usually get is a letter confirming both names are one person, and for job verification that letter does the work.
A university records your name from the documents you submitted at admission, so a degree name correction almost always begins by checking the certificate the university copied from, normally the Class 10 certificate, and then deciding whether the degree is wrong or the school record was wrong all along. If the Class 10 certificate is correct and the university mistyped it, this is a straightforward correction: a written application to the Registrar through your college, with the degree, all semester or year marksheets, the admission form if the college still holds it, the Class 10 certificate and identity papers, and the university's own prescribed fee. If the Class 10 certificate itself carries the error, fix the board record first, because correcting only the degree leaves the mismatch alive in the document every recruitment panel reads first. Timing decides how hard this is. Before convocation your name is still data in the university's records and a correction is comparatively simple; after the degree is printed and awarded it becomes a reissue, and where you have genuinely changed your name rather than corrected an error, most universities will not reprint an old degree at all, because the certificate correctly records the name you held when the degree was conferred. There the realistic outcome is a linking letter on university or college letterhead confirming both names belong to one person, kept with your gazette copy. One more Jharkhand-specific point: for an old degree, the university that awarded it may not be the university that exists in your town today, because Ranchi University was created in 1960 and several universities were later carved out of it, so the record may sit somewhere other than where you would expect.
If the board certificate is the one at fault, start on the JAC correction page. If you are not sure whether you need a gazette at all, the decision is on the correction or gazette page.

- Before convocation, while the name is still data
- After convocation
- A reissue, and for a genuine name change often a refusal to reprint

- Fixing only the degree can leave the real mismatch untouched.
- Before convocation is far easier than after it.
- Old degrees may sit with a parent university, not the local one.
- A linking letter is a normal and useful outcome, not a failure.
- Every university has its own form and fee; no state-wide rule applies.
Why Your University Spelt Your Name the Way It Did
At admission the college filled your particulars from the certificates you produced and sent them to the university for registration. Everything printed later, the registration slip, the semester marksheets, the provisional certificate and the degree, comes from that one entry.
The chain runs one way
Class 10 certificate to admission form to university registration to every marksheet to the degree. An error anywhere upstream reappears on every document below it, which is why people find the same wrong spelling on five papers.
So the degree is rarely the origin
A university typing error does happen, and then it is quick to fix. Far more often the university copied faithfully from a school certificate that was already wrong, and the degree is simply the place you noticed it.
Which is why we ask for both
Send the degree and the Class 10 certificate together. Comparing the two takes a minute and tells you whether you are fixing one document or two, and in which order.
Which Record Is Wrong: the Degree or the School Certificate
| What you find | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Class 10 correct, degree wrong | A university or college typing error | Apply to the Registrar through the college with the Class 10 certificate as the proof |
| Class 10 wrong, degree copied it | The school record is the origin | Correct the board certificate first, then take the corrected copy to the university |
| Both wrong in the same way | Almost certainly one original error, copied twice | Same as above; fixing the degree alone leaves the anchor document wrong |
| Only the degree differs, and you changed your name | Not an error at all | A gazette and then a linking letter; do not expect a reprint |
| Marksheets say one thing and the degree another | An error introduced at the final printing stage | The easiest case; the university's own records contradict the degree |
How to Apply for a Degree Name Correction in Jharkhand
Collect the chain
Degree, provisional certificate, every semester or year marksheet, the registration slip, the admission form from the college, and the Class 10 certificate the university copied from.
Write to the Registrar through your college
The exact wrong entry and the exact correct entry as two lines, your registration number, roll number, course, session and college, with copies attached and the college's forwarding letter.
Pay the university's own fee and take a receipt
Each university sets its own charge and its own form. Ask the examination or certificate section what the current figure is and note the file or diary number.
Follow up with the file number, and plan for either outcome
A corrected or reissued certificate, or a linking letter. Ask which one you are getting in writing, because the two are used differently at a verification desk.
Correcting a Name Before Convocation and After It
| Stage | What your name is | What it takes |
|---|---|---|
| At admission and registration | Data being entered | Check the registration slip the week you get it; this is the cheapest correction of your life |
| On the first semester marksheet | Data already printed once | Report it at once, before the same entry prints on five more documents |
| Before convocation | Data, with nothing conferred yet | A correction application; the degree is then printed correctly the first time |
| After the degree is awarded | A conferred certificate | A reissue, with the university's own form, fee and waiting period |
| After a genuine change of name | A correct record of a former name | Usually no reprint; a linking letter with the gazette copy instead |
Old Degrees and Which University Holds the Record Now
This is the part that catches older graduates. The university named on your degree may not be the university that serves your town today, because the map has been redrawn more than once.
Before 1960
Ranchi University was established on 12 July 1960 by an Act of the Bihar legislature. Before that, degree colleges of what is now Jharkhand, other than the Santhal Parganas, were affiliated to Patna University, so a degree older than that belongs to a different institution entirely.
From 1960 onwards
Ranchi University became the parent for the region, and its office is at Shahid Chowk, Ranchi 834001. A great many degrees held by people now living in other districts were awarded by it.
After the separations
Vinoba Bhave University at Hazaribagh was separated from Ranchi University in 1992, and other universities followed for their own regions. A degree from before a separation was awarded by the parent, so that is the office holding the record.
The Linking Letter, and Why It Usually Does the Job
People treat a linking letter as a consolation prize. In practice it is what solves the actual problem, which is almost never the certificate itself but a verification desk asking why two documents show two names.
What it is
A letter on university or college letterhead, signed and stamped, recording that the person named one way on one document and another way on another is one and the same person, with the registration number and course.
What to ask for
Ask by name, in writing, and ask for it to quote both spellings exactly and refer to the gazette notification or corrected certificate where one exists. A vague letter helps nobody.
What to do with it
Keep the original safe, give attested copies, and submit it together with the gazette copy and your affidavit. For employment, higher study and verification, that set is normally accepted.
Where a Gazette Fits in a Degree Name Correction
A degree error by itself does not need one. The gazette enters in two situations, and both are posted to the same place, because no district in Jharkhand has a gazette counter: the Department of Publication, Civil Lines, Delhi 110054, with publication in Part IV of the Gazette of India.
You are taking a different name
Then the gazette is the instrument, and the degree question becomes the linking letter above. It is also what Aadhaar treats as the proof of identity for a full or first name change. The route is on the gazette name change page.
The school register repeats the error
Then the board cannot correct the certificate the university copied, and the instrument is a public notice quoting the wrong spelling exactly as printed. That notice can name the degree and the school certificates together.
What a Degree Name Correction Costs in Jharkhand
| Item | Cost | Note |
|---|---|---|
| University correction or reissue fee | Set by each university | There is no state-wide figure; ask the examination or certificate section and take a receipt |
| Board correction first, where the school record is the origin | The council's prescribed fee | Charged per certificate, so Class 10 and Class 12 are two fees |
| Linking letter | Usually nothing, or a small office charge | Ask for it in writing and keep the original |
| One-and-the-same-person affidavit | Commonly Rs 100 to Rs 500 | Do it in week one if a job or admission deadline is close |
| RTI for your own university record | Rs 10 | A reply is due within thirty days; address the public information officer, or the Registrar where none is named |
| Gazette, only where it is genuinely needed | Commonly Rs 1,100 adult or Rs 1,350 for a public notice | Revised each financial year, BharatKosh only, non-refundable |
| Time | Weeks for a correction, longer for a reissue | Convocation cycles and printing batches decide much of it |
| Our charge | Quoted per case; the route check is free | Full bill on the cost page |
Degree Name Mistakes That Cost Graduates a Job Offer
The mistakes
- Correcting the degree and leaving the Class 10 certificate as it was.
- Never reading the university registration slip in first year.
- Leaving the college without asking for a linking letter when names differ.
- Applying after convocation for something that could have been fixed before it.
- Writing to the university that serves your town today for a degree awarded by its parent.
The myths
- "A gazette makes the university reprint the degree"; it does not act on university records by itself.
- "All universities follow one rule"; each sets its own form, fee and practice.
- "An affidavit is enough"; it explains a mismatch, it does not correct a record.
- "A linking letter is worthless"; it is what most verification desks actually want.
- "Fix Aadhaar and the rest will follow"; the anchor is the Class 10 certificate, and Aadhaar allows only two name updates in a lifetime.
