JAC Marksheet Correction or Gazette Name Change
Almost every page you will find on this subject sells the same answer: get an affidavit, put a notice in two papers, buy a gazette, then take it to the board. For the majority of students in Jharkhand that advice is simply wrong, and it costs them about Rs 1,350 in Government fee plus weeks of waiting for a document the board did not ask for. The correct answer turns on one question, and you can answer it in a minute. Are you fixing a name that was printed wrongly, or are you taking a different name from the one your school records hold? The first is a correction and runs through the school. The second is a change of name and does need a gazette, but even then it will not do what most people expect it to do to an old marksheet.
Ask yourself one thing: does the name you want already exist in your school's admission register? If it does, and the printed certificate disagrees with it, this is a correction. The board corrects the certificate to match its own source record, the application goes through the school, and no gazette is involved at any stage. If the name you want does not exist in the register, there are two possibilities. Either the register carries the same wrong spelling, in which case the board has nothing to correct against and the route is a public notice in Part IV of the Gazette of India quoting the wrong spelling exactly as printed. Or you are choosing a different name from the one you were recorded under, which is a change of name, and that does need a gazette notification. The distinction matters because the two are not the same product. A correction makes an old document accurate. A change of name creates a record of a change from one name to another, and it does not rewrite history: a board certificate issued years ago is a record of who you were at that time, and many boards will not reprint it in a new name at all. In that situation the realistic outcome is not a fresh marksheet but a linking letter, a written acknowledgement from the institution that both names belong to one person. Everything else, the affidavit, the newspaper notices and the fee, follows whichever of these three routes you are actually on, and picking wrongly is the single most expensive mistake in this whole subject.
The pages selling gazette packages for every marksheet problem are not lying on purpose. They are copying a rule that belongs somewhere else. One widely repeated line says a court must admit a change of name before it takes effect and a gazette notice must then be published, which is drawn from a particular national board's own rule and does not describe a state board correcting its own printing error.

Three Things a Gazette Never Does to a Marksheet
People buy a gazette expecting it to act on their school records by itself. It does not, and knowing the limits before you pay is what stops the second disappointment.
It does not change the admission register
The school's register stays exactly as it is. A gazette is a published notice about you, not an instruction to a school to rewrite a page written twenty years ago.
It does not reprint your marksheet
Nothing happens to the certificate automatically. Somebody still has to apply to the board with the published notice, and the board still decides what it will do with an old record.
It does not correct a date of birth
This is the one where people lose the most money. A date of birth is corrected by the Registrar or by the board on its own evidence rules, and no gazette notice has ever changed one. The details are on the date of birth page.
When You Really Did Change Your Name and the Marksheet Is Old
This is the case the sales pages never finish honestly. Suppose you have genuinely taken a new name, you have done it properly, and the gazette notice is published. What happens to a Class 10 certificate printed under your old name years earlier?
The board sees a record, not an error
Nothing was printed wrongly. The certificate correctly records the name you held when you sat the examination, and many boards will not reissue in a new name on that basis, because there is no mistake to fix.
The linking letter is the realistic outcome
What you can usually get is a written acknowledgement from the school, college or employer that both names belong to one person, held on file with the gazette copy. For most practical purposes, that is what people actually need.
What to carry, forever
The gazette PDF, the affidavit and the old certificate together. Once Aadhaar, PAN and the bank are in the new name, the old marksheet plus the gazette is a complete and normal explanation at any counter.

The Gazette Route From Jharkhand, When It Is Genuinely Yours
There is one Central Gazette office and it is the Department of Publication, Civil Lines, Delhi 110054, behind the Delhi Vidhan Sabha Metro Station. No district in Jharkhand has a counter, and any listing showing a gazette office in Ranchi or a Jharkhand address ending 110054 is copying a Delhi pin code onto a state name. Personal notices publish in Part IV, which has been digital only since 1 October 2015, and the PDF is free from the e-Gazette site.
