Why There Is No Gazette Name Change Status Portal or Application Number
The Department of Publication publishes a journal; it does not run a citizen services portal. A Part IV file is received by post, scrutinised, and either printed in a weekly issue or returned to the sender. There is no intake number to quote, no login, no SMS, no dashboard and no officer whose job is to answer where a particular file has reached. The e-Gazette portal is the output side only: it holds published issues and a search over them, and it knows nothing about files that have not yet been published.
What this means for you
Your proof that the file arrived is the postal tracking; your proof that it succeeded is the published notice. Between the two there is nothing to check, and a page that offers a check is selling reassurance.
What it means for a consultant
No consultant has a back channel either. What a desk can honestly do is search every weekly Part IV issue in your window so that you do not have to, and tell you when it appears or when the window has passed.
Where the confusion comes from
Some State gazette portals do have a name-change status module with an application number, Gujarat's among them. Those belong to State processes for State residents; Jharkhand has no such route, and the Gazette of India has no such module.

The weekly issues are dated by Saturdays, so the first and second calendars take the Saturday dates of the range you are searching, for example the fourth Saturday after delivery to the tenth. Then click Standard Report.

The report lists the issues as PDFs. Open one, press Ctrl and F, and search your old name; then your new name. A Part IV issue is long, and your notice is one paragraph in it. Download the whole issue as your copy; the Department's guidelines say it needs no certification.

Search terms
- Search the surname alone, then the first name alone; a stray space or a hyphen breaks an exact match.
- Search the old name and the new name separately; a public notice quotes the old spelling as printed on the certificate.
- Search your father's or husband's name, or your locality, if the names are common.
- Try the name in capitals and in title case; some issues are typeset differently.
Range and reading
- Widen the range by two Saturdays on each side before concluding anything.
- Open every issue in the range, not only the one you expect; files move by scrutiny order, not by post order.
- Use a desktop browser; searching inside long PDFs on a phone is slow and the find box sometimes misses.

Sworn on non-judicial stamp paper before a notary at your district court, in the OLD name as on your current Aadhaar: old name, new name, father's or husband's name, address with pin code, reason, verification clause, notary seal and register number. Two newspaper notices, day 3 to 7

Proforma, CD and request letter, day 7 to 8

Only on bharatkosh.gov.in, in your own name, selecting the Department of Publication and the Gazette notification purpose: commonly Rs 1,100 for an adult, Rs 1,700 for a minor, revised each financial year, non-refundable. Print the receipt for the file. No demand draft, no cash, no counter anywhere in Jharkhand.

The e-Gazette PDF carries the Gazette of India number, the Part IV heading, the date of publication, the page number and your notice in its own paragraph. Every office reads the number, the date and the page; note all three the moment you find the notice. A notice with a misprint is corrected by corrigendum within six months, free where the press erred; a corrected notice is what each office gets.

Why egazette.jharkhand.gov.in Shows Nothing for Your Name
Applicants who search the State portal find Commercial Taxes notifications, Personnel Department orders and tender notices, and conclude that their file failed. It did not: the Jharkhand Gazette is the State Government's journal and carries what the State Government does, and the personal name notifications the Doranda press once printed were stopped, as reported, in July 2025.
