Surname Change After Marriage in Jharkhand
You have three choices and all of them are legal. Replace your surname with your husband's. Keep the one you already have. Or join the two, which the passport instructions themselves allow when they say a surname could be two words, giving Roy Choudhary and Das Gupta as examples. Nothing in law makes any of them compulsory, and the cheapest choice is often to change nothing. What actually matters is that whatever you pick appears on every record, because a surname on four papers and not on three is what gets a file rejected years later. This page is about the surname mechanics: which choice to make, what document proves it, and the order to move the offices in. The Kumari and Devi pattern, where the old word was never a family name at all, is a case of its own.
Changing your surname after marriage is a choice, not a requirement, and there are three of them. You can replace your surname with your husband's, keep your own, or carry both as a two word surname, which the passport application instructions expressly allow when they say a surname could have two words and give Roy Choudhary and Das Gupta as examples. Whichever you pick, the document that proves it is the marriage certificate. UIDAI's published list of acceptable documents names a marriage certificate with or without photograph issued by a Central or State Government as proof of identity, and its gazette entry is written for change in first name or change in full name, which a surname change is not. So the ordinary case needs no gazette notice at all, and anybody quoting you one for a routine married surname change should be asked which rule makes it necessary. The order matters more than the paperwork. Get the marriage certificate first and check its spelling, because every later office copies it. Then Aadhaar, using the certificate as proof and remembering that a name update there is limited in a lifetime. Then PAN, bank and provident fund. Then the certificates that JharSewa issues afresh, such as caste, residence and income. The passport last, because it wants to see the other records already carrying the name, and because marriage and divorce are treated differently there from an ordinary name change. Two things not to do: do not try to rewrite your Class 10 certificate, which correctly records the name you had then, and do not leave the job half finished, because a surname on some papers and not others is worse than never having started.
The Three Surname Choices After Marriage, and What Each Costs Later
Decide this once, with your own documents in front of you, and then do not revisit it. The expensive mistake on this subject is not choosing wrongly, it is choosing twice.
| The choice | Example | What it means in practice |
|---|---|---|
| Replace your surname with his | Priya Sharma becomes Priya Mishra | The commonest choice. Every record has to move, so plan on a run of office visits over a few weeks. The marriage certificate is the proof throughout |
| Keep your own surname | Priya Sharma stays Priya Sharma | Nothing to do at all. No forms, no fees, no mismatch risk. Legal and completely ordinary, and the cheapest answer by far |
| Join both surnames | Priya Sharma Mishra | Allowed. The passport instructions say a surname could have two words and give Roy Choudhary and Das Gupta as examples. But it is the hardest to keep consistent, because clerks drop one half |
| Add his name without changing your surname | Priya Sharma, husband's name recorded separately | Several records carry a husband's name in a field of its own, which is not the same as changing your surname. Worth knowing before you change anything |
The Honest Warning About Joining Two Surnames
What Proves a Married Surname, and Why a Gazette Is Usually Not Needed
A surname change after marriage is supported by a certificate, which is why it is simpler than an ordinary name change. Two entries in UIDAI's published list of acceptable documents make the point better than any explanation.
| The entry | What it says | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| Marriage certificate | "Marriage Certificate with or without photograph issued by Central Government / State Government" | Accepted as proof of identity. This is the paper to carry to the update counter |
| Gazette notification | "For change in first name or change in full name: Gazette notification" | Written for a first name change or a full name change. Priya Sharma becoming Priya Mishra is neither, because Priya stays |
The passport side works on the same principle. A change following marriage or divorce is treated differently from an ordinary change of name, because a certificate or a decree exists to support it, while somebody simply choosing a new name has nothing of the kind and must publish. The detail is on the passport page.
Get the Marriage Certificate Right Before Anything Else
Register the marriage
Through the registrar in your district. Without a certificate this whole route is closed and you are pushed towards a gazette you did not need.
Check every letter on it
Both names, both fathers' names, the date and the place. An error here gets copied into Aadhaar, PAN and the bank, and then has to be unwound in several places at once.
Take several attested copies
You will hand one over at almost every office. Getting them all at one sitting saves a dozen trips later.
The Order to Change Your Surname on Documents in Jharkhand
Write the final name down
First name, middle name if any, and the surname exactly as it will appear. Replace, keep or join, decided once. Everything below copies this line.
Marriage certificate, checked
Registered, spelt correctly, with several attested copies in hand before you start.
Aadhaar
With the certificate as proof of identity. Go once with the final version, because a name update is limited in a lifetime and a second attempt is not guaranteed.
PAN
Through the correction form, with the certificate and the updated Aadhaar. The PAN number never changes, and a second PAN carries a penalty rather than solving anything.
Bank, and then anything the bank feeds
A request letter with the certificate and the updated identity document. Do the bank before insurance and investments, because they will ask for bank details that already match.
Employer and provident fund
Usually a joint declaration through the employer where the record differs. Ask which form they use rather than buying anything first.
JharSewa certificates
Caste, residence and income certificates are issued afresh rather than amended, so they pick up the current name once the rest is done.
Passport last
It wants the other records already carrying the name, and marriage is treated differently there from an ordinary change. Going first is the slowest possible order.
What Happens to Your Maiden Name on Old Records
Some records change and some do not, and knowing which is which saves a lot of wasted effort at counters.
| The record | What happens |
|---|---|
| Class 10 and Class 12 certificates | They keep your maiden name, and they should. They record the name you had when you sat the examination. Every office in India understands this, and the marriage certificate is what links the two names |
| Degree and college records | Usually the same, and where a university does act it is normally a linking entry recording the married name alongside the earlier one rather than a reprint. The degree page covers this |
| Aadhaar, PAN, bank, passport, voter ID | These are live identity records and they do change, which is why they are the ones on your list |
| Caste certificate | Caste follows birth, so a fresh certificate still names your father. That is correct, not an error, and it confuses families every year. The caste certificate page explains |
| Property papers in your maiden name | They stay as they are unless a specific transaction needs otherwise, and the marriage certificate explains the link. The property page has the detail |
| Your children's records naming you | Corrected at their school, not at yours, and usually only if there is a genuine mismatch that causes a problem in admissions or counselling |
Central Gazette Name Change Process From Jharkhand, Step by Step, If a Notice Is Needed
Most married surname changes never reach this section, and that is the point of the page. It matters where there is no marriage certificate to rely on, where you are taking a surname that is nobody's in either family, where your first name is changing too, or where an office has refused the certificate in writing. No district in Jharkhand has a gazette counter, so the file goes from Ranchi, Jamshedpur, Dhanbad, Bokaro, Hazaribagh or anywhere else in the state to the Department of Publication, Civil Lines, Delhi 110054, and the notice publishes in Part IV of the Gazette of India. As reported in July 2025 the Finance Department stopped personal name change notifications from the Jharkhand Government Press with immediate effect, so there is no state alternative.
The Eight Steps of a Central Gazette File Sent From Jharkhand
Fix the final name before anything else
First name and surname, letter by letter, and then use that version in every paper in the file. A corrigendum after publication is a second fee and a second wait.
Pick the category, then its proforma
The Department runs twelve guideline categories, and three of them touch this subject: change of name for an adult, adopting a different surname, and adopting a maiden surname. Download only the one that fits your case.
Type the proforma in duplicate
Two originals, signed in the existing name for a change of name, with two witnesses giving signature, full name, address and mobile number on both copies.
Sign the undertaking
Same names and address as the proforma, word for word, with the clause accepting personal responsibility if a legal issue arises later. Rs 100 non-judicial stamp paper with a notary is our safe default.
Publish and keep the original paper
One of the daily local leading newspapers, carrying the old name, the new name, the father's or husband's name and the address. The whole original paper goes in the file.
Pay only through BharatKosh
The Non Tax Receipt Portal and nowhere else since October 2018. Select the Department of Publication by name, read the amount the portal shows, pay in your own name and print the e-receipt.
Check every date, then post it yourself
Nothing in the file older than one year. Personally or by post or courier only, never through an agent or advocate. Photocopy everything first, because nothing sent in comes back.
Read the notice, then download it
Check the old name and the new name letter by letter the day it publishes, note the page and issue number, and download the e-Gazette copy of that Part IV issue.
The Five Papers in the File, and What Is Checked in Each
| The paper | What is checked in it, clause by clause |
|---|---|
| 1. The proforma, in duplicate | That it is the right category's format; the existing name exactly as your documents carry it; the new name; the father's or husband's name; the full address with pin code; the signature in the right name; two witnesses complete with signature, full name, address and mobile number |
| 2. The undertaking | Signed by the applicant; the same names and address as the proforma, word for word; the declaration that the statement is true, with personal responsibility accepted if a legal issue arises later |
| 3. The original newspaper | The original paper, not a cutting; the paper's name and date of publication visible; the old name, the new name, the father's or husband's name and the address carried; the same spelling as the proforma; dated within the last year |
| 4. Photographs and identity proof | Two self-attested passport photographs; identity and address proof matching the proforma address; both witnesses' proofs; and the marriage certificate or decree where one exists |
| 5. The CD, its certificate and the BharatKosh receipt | MS Word, without the witness portion, name typed in place of the signature; the certificate that hard and soft copies are the same; the forwarding letter to the Controller of Publication with a telephone number and email; the e-receipt |
The posting detail is on the sending the file to Delhi page, the wording on the proforma format page, the charge by category on the fee and undertaking page, and the download on the download page.
What to Carry to Each Office in Jharkhand After Marriage
| The office | What to carry |
|---|---|
| Aadhaar | The marriage certificate, which UIDAI's list accepts as proof of identity, with the existing Aadhaar. Go once with the final version because of the lifetime limit. The Aadhaar page has the limits |
| PAN | The correction form with the certificate and the updated Aadhaar. The number never changes. The PAN page has the route |
| Bank | A request letter with the certificate and the updated identity document. Do this before insurance and investments, which will ask for matching bank details. The bank records page covers it |
| LIC and insurance | An endorsement at the branch rather than a new policy, and the nomination is updated separately. The LIC page has the process |
| Voter ID | Through Form 8, which is free, with the certificate. The voter ID page has the steps |
| Driving licence and vehicle RC | At the RTO that holds the licence, with the number unchanged. The driving licence page has the JH codes |
| Ration card | Through the Aahar portal or the block supply office, after Aadhaar, because the e-KYC wants an exact match. The ration card page has the steps |
| JharSewa certificates | Caste, residence and income are issued afresh rather than amended, so do them once the identity records are settled. The residence certificate page covers the route |
| Passport | Last, with the others updated. Marriage is treated differently there from an ordinary name change |
What a Surname Change After Marriage Costs in Jharkhand
| Item | Cost | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Keeping your own surname | Nothing. No forms, no fees, no mismatch risk | None |
| The ordinary marriage change | The marriage certificate's own charge, the Aadhaar update fee, the PAN correction charge, and the small charges at each other office. No gazette charge at all | A few weeks across the offices, mostly waiting for cards |
| An affidavit, where two papers already differ | Rs 100 non-judicial stamp paper plus the notary's charge | Same day |
| Change of name in the Gazette, in the narrow cases | The Department's guidelines print Rs 1,100 for a change of name of an adult or major for the financial year 2016 to 2017, adding that it varies each financial year and from case to case, and Rs 3,500 for an Indian living abroad. Plus the newspaper, the notary and the courier | Part IV publishes weekly, so allow several weeks from posting |
| Newspaper | Paid to the paper, charged by length, only where a gazette notice is actually needed | Same week |
| Our charge | Quoted on your papers before you pay anything, and confirmed in writing. We print no service price on any page of this site | |
Myths About Changing a Surname After Marriage
"Changing the surname is compulsory"
It is not. Keeping your own surname is legal and ordinary, and if your papers are consistent as they stand, doing nothing is the cheapest and safest choice available to you.
"Every married woman needs a gazette notice"
No. UIDAI accepts a Government-issued marriage certificate as proof of identity and reserves its gazette entry for a change in first name or full name. A surname change supported by a certificate is a different thing.
"I must change my Class 10 certificate too"
You should not, and usually cannot. It records the name you had then, and the marriage certificate is what links it to your name now.
"I can carry two surnames casually"
A two word surname is legal, and the passport instructions allow it. What is not workable is using both on some papers and one on others, which is the commonest self-made mismatch.
"The bank is where to start"
The bank will ask for updated identity proof, so you end up at Aadhaar anyway. Certificate, Aadhaar, then everything else.
"My caste certificate will show my husband now"
Caste follows birth, so a fresh certificate still names your father. That is correct rather than an error.
"Aadhaar can be updated as often as I like"
A name update is limited in a lifetime. Going once to add a word and again to change it wastes something you may need later.
"The marriage certificate should show my new name"
It should not. It names you as you were, which is precisely what makes it the link between the two names.
"If we divorce, the surname changes back by itself"
It does not. Reverting is its own process with the decree doing the work, and the Department even runs a separate guideline category for adopting a maiden surname.
Key Terms in a Married Surname Change

| Two word surname | A joined surname such as Roy Choudhary or Das Gupta, which the passport instructions expressly allow |
| Maiden surname | The surname you carried before marriage. The Department of Publication has a separate guideline category for going back to it |

| One and the same person affidavit | A notarised statement that two versions of a name belong to you, used to bridge a gap while records are updated |
| Linking entry or endorsement | A note recording the married name alongside the earlier one, which a university or board may give instead of a reprint |
| Change of name | The gazette category for taking a name with no certificate to support it, needed only in the narrow cases |
