One document does most of the work • Jharkhand has its own marriage registration Act • No gazette for an ordinary surname

Documents Required for Name Change After Marriage in Jharkhand

The list is shorter than most websites make it look. For a surname change after marriage, the marriage certificate does most of the work, because it is the one paper that carries your maiden name and your married name together. Jharkhand also has something most states do not, and no competitor page mentions it: The Jharkhand Compulsory Registration of Marriages Act, 2017, which provides for registration within one year of the marriage, puts the work with the municipal body in towns and the Panchayat Sevak in villages, and fixes the penalty for late registration at Rs 5 per day up to a maximum of Rs 100. It also says plainly that a marriage is not invalid just because it was never registered.

Quick answer

For an ordinary surname change after marriage you need four things and not the long list you have been shown: the marriage certificate, your Aadhaar, your PAN, and one old certificate carrying your maiden name such as the Class 10. An affidavit is added only where a particular office asks for one, and a gazette notice is not needed at all for a plain surname change. The marriage certificate is the centre of the whole thing because it carries both names, and UIDAI's own published list of supporting documents accepts a marriage certificate issued by a Central or State Government as proof of identity. In Jharkhand there are two ways a marriage gets registered and it helps to know which one applies to you. A marriage solemnised under the Hindu Marriage Act, the Special Marriage Act or the Anand Marriage Act is registered through the Department of Revenue, Registration and Land Reforms on the state's registration portal. Separately, The Jharkhand Compulsory Registration of Marriages Act, 2017 provides for compulsory registration of marriages in the state within one year of solemnisation, through the officers who register births and deaths in a municipal body in urban areas and the Panchayat Sevak or a similar official in rural areas, with a Chief Registrar at district level. That Act also says a marriage already registered under those other Acts need not be registered again, fixes the penalty for late registration without reasonable cause at Rs 5 per day subject to a maximum of Rs 100, and states that no marriage is invalid solely because it was not registered. Note honestly that the Act provides for it to come into force on a date notified by the State Government, and we have not seen that notification, so confirm the current position at your municipal office or panchayat before relying on the timeline.

Documents Required for a Name Change After Marriage, and What Each One Does

Documents required for name change after marriage in Jharkhand with marriage certificate on top
Four papers carry an ordinary married surname change. The rest is office by office.

Every document on a list should be doing a job. If nobody can tell you what a paper is for, you probably do not need it. Here is the whole list with the job each one does.

The documents needed for a name change after marriage in Jharkhand and the purpose of each
DocumentNeededThe job it does
Marriage certificateAlwaysThe only paper carrying your maiden name and your married name together. UIDAI accepts a Government issued one as proof of identity, which is why it usually replaces everything else
AadhaarAlwaysAlmost every other office verifies the new name against this, so it moves first and everything else follows it
PANAlwaysThe income tax record. Reads the Aadhaar, so it comes second
One old certificate in the maiden nameAlways, to carryUsually the Class 10. It shows what your name was, and it stays in the maiden name for life
Passport size photographsMost officesTwo self-attested, and cross-signed where a format says so
AffidavitOnly if askedLinks the two names for an office that will not take the certificate alone. Use the office's own format where one exists
Husband's identity proofSometimesWhere a joint affidavit format is used, or where a bank or an employer asks for it
Address proof in the new addressIf you also movedMany women change address and surname together, and an office reads both changes in one application
Newspaper advertisementOnly with a gazetteNot needed for an ordinary married surname. It belongs to a gazette file
Gazette notificationRarelyOnly where the change goes beyond the surname, or where no certificate exists to prove the link
The four rows people are wrongly sold. A newspaper advertisement and a gazette notification are not part of an ordinary married surname change, and neither is a court order, which nobody needs for this at all. If somebody is quoting you for a newspaper notice plus a gazette file simply because you got married, ask them which office has asked for it in writing. Usually no office has.

Where the change goes further than a surname, the picture changes and a gazette file does come in. Those cases and the full file are set out further down this page, and the decision itself is worked through on our correction against change of name page.

The Marriage Certificate and Jharkhand's Two Marriage Registration Routes

Because the certificate carries the whole thing, it is worth knowing how it is issued in this state. There are two routes, they sit with two different departments, and people are regularly sent to the wrong counter.

The two marriage registration routes in Jharkhand and which one applies
RouteWhere it sitsWhen it applies
Under the marriage law itselfThe Department of Revenue, Registration and Land Reforms, through the state's registration system, which publishes the forms onlineA marriage solemnised under the Hindu Marriage Act, the Special Marriage Act (including the notice of intended marriage and the Form 5 application under Section 15), or the Anand Marriage Act for a Sikh marriage
Under the state's own compulsory registration ActThe officers who register births and deaths: the municipal body in urban areas, and the Panchayat Sevak or a similar official in rural areas, with a Chief Registrar at district levelMarriages of citizens residing in Jharkhand, solemnised in the registrar's area or where at least one party lives there, under The Jharkhand Compulsory Registration of Marriages Act, 2017

What the 2017 Act Actually Provides

1

Register within one year

The Act provides for registration within one year of the solemnisation of the marriage.

2

No double registration

A marriage already registered under the Hindu Marriage Act, the Special Marriage Act or a similar Act need not be registered again.

3

The late penalty is small

For not registering without reasonable cause, the Act fixes Rs 5 per day, subject to a maximum of Rs 100. A false statement is a separate and much heavier matter, up to Rs 5,000.

4

Your marriage is still valid

The Act states that no marriage to which it applies is invalid solely because it was not registered.

Read this before you panic about being late. The maximum penalty the Act fixes for late registration is Rs 100. That single number ends most of the fear people arrive with, and it is why a late registration is almost always the right answer instead of an expensive workaround. Note honestly that the Act provides for it to come into force on a date notified by the State Government and we have not seen that notification, and that a state may prescribe its own registration fees and forms separately. So treat the timeline and the penalty as what the Act provides, and confirm what your own municipal office or panchayat is currently charging and accepting before you go.
Which certificate an office actually wants. Any Government issued marriage certificate carrying both names does the job, whichever route issued it. What matters to the officer reading it is that your maiden name and your married name appear on one Government paper. Check before you leave the counter that both names are spelt exactly as they appear on your Aadhaar and your Class 10 certificate, because a certificate with a spelling of its own creates a fresh mismatch instead of closing one.

If you are still to register, our name change after marriage page sets out the journey around it, and the surname mechanics sit on the surname change after marriage page.

What to Do If You Have No Marriage Certificate in Jharkhand

This is common, particularly for marriages from ten or twenty years ago in rural Jharkhand where nothing was registered at the time. It is not a dead end, and it does not mean your marriage is in doubt.

Options where no marriage certificate exists and what each one leads to
Your situationWhat to doWhat it gives you
Married recently, never registeredRegister now, through the route that fits how the marriage was solemnisedA certificate carrying both names, which then does all the work everywhere else
Married long ago, never registeredRegister late. The Act fixes the penalty at Rs 5 per day up to a maximum of Rs 100 for not registering without reasonable causeThe same certificate. Late registration is cheap and is almost always better than any workaround
Registered, but the certificate is lostApply for a certified copy from the office that issued itA fresh copy. You do not need to register again
The certificate carries only one nameGet it corrected at the issuing office before using it anywhereA certificate that can actually link the two names, which is its whole purpose
No certificate is possible at allThis is where a gazette notice genuinely earns its cost, because nothing else links the two namesA published record joining the maiden name to the married name
The honest order to try things in. Register the marriage first, even if it is years late, because a certificate solves the problem at every office at once and the Act's own penalty for lateness is capped at Rs 100. Only where registration is genuinely impossible does a gazette file become the sensible answer. An agent who sells you a gazette without first asking whether you could simply register the marriage is selling you the expensive option.

One thing a missing certificate does not mean. Under the Act, no marriage is invalid solely because it was not registered. Nobody at any counter can tell you that your marriage does not count because there is no paper. What is missing is the proof that links two names, and that is a document problem with a document answer.

What Each Office Asks For After a Name Change on Marriage

The general list is one thing. What the person across the counter actually asks for is another, and it differs. This table is the practical version.

What each office asks for when updating a name after marriage in Jharkhand
OfficeWhat it asks forWorth knowing
AadhaarThe marriage certificate and the update formUIDAI's published list accepts a Government issued marriage certificate as proof of identity. The fee is charged per attempt and is not refunded, and name updates are limited in number, so do not experiment with spellings
PANThe certificate, the correction form and the updated AadhaarThe PAN number itself never changes. Holding a second PAN carries a penalty of Rs 10,000 under section 272B, so never apply fresh instead of correcting
Bank and post officeA branch visit with the certificate, updated Aadhaar and PAN, and a fresh signatureMany branches ask for an affidavit as their own practice. Ask for their format. Cards and cheque books are reissued, so do this before any large transaction
PassportA reissue application with the certificateThe rules treat marriage, remarriage and divorce as needing no further proof. Update Aadhaar first so the two agree
Voter identity cardThe certificate with the correction applicationStraightforward once Aadhaar is done. If you also moved, deal with the address in the same application
Driving licence and vehicle papersThe certificate at the district transport officeBoth the licence and the registration certificate carry a name, so check both and not just the licence
LIC and insuranceThe certificate with each insurer's own endorsement formEvery company has its own form. A policy left in the maiden name causes trouble at claim time, not before, which is why it gets forgotten
Employer, institute or professional bodyWhatever their own circular says, usually an affidavit in their own formatThis is where most affidavits are genuinely needed. The service book, the provident fund record and the salary account should move together
School, board, degree and caste certificateNothing. Leave them aloneThey were correct when issued and lawfully keep the maiden name. The marriage certificate is what joins them to the new name
If an office refuses the marriage certificate, do not argue at the counter. Ask for the refusal in writing, addressed to you, saying what is being refused and under which instruction. Most refusals disappear the moment that is asked for, because nothing is actually being refused under any instruction. Where the refusal stands, you now know the real reason and can answer it, and if it has to go higher a written refusal is the only thing a grievance office will act on.

The individual routes are covered in detail on our Aadhaar, PAN, bank records, passport and LIC policy pages.

If Your Address Changed After Marriage Too, Handle Both in One Application

In Jharkhand most women move to the husband's home after marriage, and very often to another district. That means two changes at once, the name and the address, and the single most useful thing on this page for such a case is that almost every office lets you do both in one application. Doing them separately means paying twice, waiting twice and standing in the same queue twice.

How to handle a name change and an address change together after marriage
RecordBoth togetherWhat proves the new address
AadhaarYes, name and address in one updateAn address proof in the new address. Where nothing is in your name yet, UIDAI's list allows certain family based routes, so ask at the centre before you give up
Voter identity cardYes, and here it matters mostMoving district means shifting to the new constituency roll. A name change on the old roll leaves you registered where you no longer live
PANYes, in the same correctionPAN carries an address in the record even though the card does not print it prominently
BankYes, in one branch visitThe updated Aadhaar usually covers both, which is one more reason to do Aadhaar first
Driving licenceYes, but check the transport officeA change of district can mean the record moves to a different district transport office
Ration cardSeparate work, and often the slowestUsually a removal from the parents' card and an addition to the husband's household, rather than an edit
Gas connection and utilitiesYesEasy to forget, and then awkward when a subsidy or a bill is in a name and an address that no longer exist
Do the voter card properly, not quickly. This is the one people get wrong. If you married into another district and only change the name, your entry stays on the old constituency roll and you are effectively registered in a place you have left. The correct step is a shift to the new constituency with the new name, in one application. It costs nothing and it prevents the awkward discovery at the next election.

Which Address Should Go on the Papers

1

The one you actually live at

Not your parents' address kept on for convenience. An office that verifies will verify the address on the paper, and a field verification that fails costs weeks.

2

The same one on every record

Aadhaar, PAN, bank and voter card should carry one address, written the same way. Two versions of a house number is a mismatch like any other.

3

With the pin code checked

A wrong pin code on an Aadhaar update is a common and irritating reason for a returned application. Confirm it before you submit.

One warning for a move across districts. Your older records, the school and board certificates, the birth certificate and the caste certificate, stay with the district that issued them. Marrying into another district does not move them and does not need to. If you later need a correction in any of those, the application goes back to the original district, not the new one. Our district pages set out which office holds what, and they are linked from the services page.

The Order to Update Your Documents After Marriage in Jharkhand

There is one reason the order matters: nearly every office verifies the new name against Aadhaar. Move Aadhaar first and everything downstream is one visit each. Move it last and several of them are two visits each.

1

Get the marriage certificate in hand

Register if you have not, even years late. Check both names and their spellings before you leave the counter.

2

Settle the new name letter by letter

Exact spelling, exact spacing. Whatever you write on the first form is what every later office will copy.

3

Ask whether any office wants an affidavit

And ask for their own format. Do this before printing anything, not after.

4

Update Aadhaar

With the marriage certificate. The fee is per attempt with no refund, and the number of name updates is limited.

5

Update PAN

Correction only, never a fresh application. The number does not change and a second PAN carries a heavy penalty.

6

Update the bank, then the rest

Bank, voter card, driving licence, gas and utility connections, and the insurance policies people forget.

7

Tell your employer in writing

So the service book, the provident fund record and the salary account move together instead of one at a time.

8

Do the passport when the first two agree

Once Aadhaar and PAN carry the new name, the reissue is straightforward.

9

Leave the old certificates alone

School, board, degree and caste certificate stay in the maiden name, with the marriage certificate kept alongside them.

Keep one folder, permanently. The marriage certificate, a printed copy of any affidavit you swore, and your old certificates in the maiden name belong together for life. Over a career you will be asked to show the link between the two names more often than you expect, and usually at short notice for a document verification. Our name mismatch at document verification page covers what panels actually check.

Central Gazette Process After Marriage From Jharkhand, for the Cases That Need It

No district in Jharkhand has a gazette counter, so the file goes from Ranchi, Jamshedpur, Dhanbad, Bokaro, Hazaribagh, Deoghar or anywhere else in the state to the Department of Publication, Civil Lines, Delhi 110054, and the notice publishes in Part IV of the Gazette of India. As reported in July 2025 the Finance Department stopped personal name change notifications from the Jharkhand Government Press with immediate effect, so there is no state alternative to fall back on.

The Eight Steps of a Marriage Name Change File Sent From Jharkhand

1

Settle the final name first

Write it out letter by letter, with the spacing you want, and then use exactly that in every paper. A corrigendum after publication is a second fee and a second wait.

2

Pick the category, then its proforma

Change of name for an adult where the whole name is changing, adopting a maiden surname for a woman resuming her own family name, adopting a different surname, or a public notice where a name was simply written wrongly. Twelve categories exist and only one is yours.

3

Type the proforma in duplicate

Two originals, signed in your existing old name, with two witnesses giving signature, full name, address and mobile number on both copies. The adult form also asks for your post and your office or company.

4

Get the affidavit attested at the right level

A notary for the ordinary change of name, and a First Class Magistrate of the concerned area where the different surname guidelines apply. This is the step that catches people out.

5

Publish and keep the original paper

One of the daily local leading newspapers, carrying the maiden name in full, the married name, the father's or husband's name and the address. The whole original paper goes in the file.

6

Pay only through BharatKosh

The Non Tax Receipt Portal and nowhere else since October 2018. Select the Department of Publication by name, read the amount the portal shows on the day, pay in your own name and print the e-receipt.

7

Check every date, then post it yourself

Nothing in the file older than one year. Personally or by post or courier only, never through an agent or advocate. Photocopy everything first, because nothing sent in comes back.

8

Read the notice, then download it

Check the maiden name and the married name letter by letter the day it publishes, note the page and issue number, and download the e-Gazette copy of that Part IV issue.

The Five Papers in the File, and What Is Checked in Each

The five papers of a Central Gazette marriage name change file and what the Department checks in each
The paperWhat is checked in it, clause by clause
1. The proforma, in duplicateThat it is the right category's format; the existing full name exactly as your documents carry it, surname included; the new married name exactly as you settled it; the father's or husband's name; the full address with pin code; the signature in the old name; two witnesses complete with signature, full name, address and mobile number
2. The affidavit or undertakingSigned by the applicant; the same names and address as the proforma, word for word; attested at the level the category asks for, which is a First Class Magistrate for the adopting a different surname route; on Rs 100 non-judicial stamp paper as our safe default
3. The original newspaperThe original paper, not a cutting; the paper's name and date of publication visible; the maiden name and the married name both carried; the same spelling as the proforma; dated within the last year
4. Photographs, identity proof and any category paperTwo self-attested passport photographs; identity and address proof matching the proforma address; both witnesses' proofs; and whatever the category itself demands, such as a decree or a no objection certificate where the maiden surname requirement applies
5. The CD, its certificate and the BharatKosh receiptMS Word, without the witness portion, the old name typed in place of the signature; the certificate that the hard copy and the soft copy are the same; the forwarding letter to the Controller of Publication with a telephone number and email; the e-receipt
The proforma is where files are lost, and there are twelve to choose from. A maiden surname file typed on the ordinary change of name form, or a change of name typed on a surname form, comes back. The Government charge already paid is not refunded, because BharatKosh payments are non-refundable. You then have six months to make good a shortcoming the Department points out, after which a fresh application with all new documents is required.
What to select on BharatKosh, field by field. Pay to the Department of Publication under the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, and pick the Ministry, the Pay and Accounts Office and the Drawing and Disbursing Officer by their names in the dropdown, never by a code copied off a website. The codes printed for this office on different websites do not agree with each other, and money paid into the wrong head cannot be traced to your file. Read the amount on the portal on the day you pay, because it is revised each financial year.
How to read the published notice before you rely on it. Open the e-Gazette copy and check five things: that it says Part IV; the date of publication; your old full name exactly as your documents carry it, with the surname spelt as it appears there; the married name, letter by letter; and the father's or husband's name and address. Then note the page number and the issue number, because that is what an office will quote back to you at verification.

The posting detail is on the sending the file to Delhi page, the wording on the proforma format page, the charge by category on the fee and undertaking page, the reasons files come back on the rejection reasons page, and the download on the download page.

What a Name Change After Marriage Costs in Jharkhand, Document by Document

Cost and time for a name change after marriage from Jharkhand
ItemCostTime
Where the marriage certificate does the work, which is most casesThe certificate you already hold, plus the office fees, and an affidavit only where one is asked for. No change of name charge at all. Where the marriage was never registered, the Act fixes the late penalty at Rs 5 per day up to a maximum of Rs 100A few weeks across Aadhaar, PAN and the bank
Government printing chargeThe Department's guidelines print Rs 1,100 for a change of name of an adult or major for the financial year 2016 to 2017, adding that it varies each financial year and from case to case, and Rs 3,500 for an Indian living abroad. The guidelines also show an additional Rs 250 on top of the Rs 1,100 in certain cases, taking that total to Rs 1,350, and the Department publishes a separate note on where additional charges apply. Which case triggers it is not something we will state from a summary, so read the amount on BharatKosh. A public notice is printed at Rs 1,400 for the same yearPart IV publishes weekly, so allow several weeks from posting
AffidavitRs 100 non-judicial stamp paper plus the attestation. A notary is enough for an ordinary marriage affidavit. A First Class Magistrate is only for the adopting a different surname routeNotary the same day; a magistrate needs a planned court visit
NewspaperPaid to the paper, charged by lengthSame week
Post or courier to DelhiSent in your own name from any district, and keep the receiptA few days each way
Updating the records afterwardsAadhaar charges a fee per attempt with no refund, and the other offices have their own small chargesSeveral weeks across all of them
Our chargeQuoted on your papers before you pay anything, and confirmed in writing. We print no service price on any page of this site
Do not trust a figure printed on any website, including this one, on the day you pay. The Department's own guidelines say the printing charge varies each financial year and from case to case, so the figures above are what the published guidelines show for 2016 to 2017 and are given so you know the order of the amount, not the amount. What BharatKosh shows when you reach the payment screen is the one that counts. Read it there and pay that.

The honest total, in the rare case a gazette is genuinely needed after a marriage, is the Government charge, the affidavit, the newspaper and the postage, and then several weeks of waiting for Part IV. The cost that surprises people is not any of these. It is the second file, caused by a name settled carelessly at step one, and it is entirely avoidable. Our corrigendum page explains what that second file involves.

Myths About the Documents Needed for a Name Change After Marriage

Common beliefs about documents needed after marriage and what is actually correct
What people believeWhat is actually so
Every married woman needs a gazette notificationNo. For an ordinary surname change the marriage certificate does the work, and UIDAI's own list accepts a Government issued certificate as proof of identity. A gazette comes in only where the change goes beyond the surname or where no certificate can prove the link
I must publish a newspaper advertisementNot for an ordinary married surname. A newspaper notice belongs to a gazette file. If somebody has quoted you for one simply because you married, ask which office demanded it in writing
My marriage is not valid because we never registered itThe Jharkhand Compulsory Registration of Marriages Act, 2017 states that no marriage to which it applies is invalid solely because it was not registered. What is missing is proof linking two names, not the marriage
Registering a years-old marriage will cost a fortune in penaltyThe Act fixes the penalty for not registering without reasonable cause at Rs 5 per day, subject to a maximum of Rs 100. Late registration is usually far cheaper than any workaround being sold to you
I have to register again even though we registered under the Hindu Marriage ActNo. The 2017 Act says a marriage already registered under those Acts need not be registered again
I should apply for a fresh PAN in my married nameNever. It is a correction to the same PAN, the number does not change, and holding a second PAN carries a penalty of Rs 10,000 under section 272B
I need my Class 10 certificate reissued in my married nameNo. It was correct when issued and lawfully carries the maiden name. The marriage certificate is what joins the two names at verification
A court order is needed for a name change after marriageNo court order is needed for this at all. Anybody quoting for one is quoting for something that does not exist in this route
The belief that costs the most money. That a long document list means a thorough job. It usually means somebody is selling extra steps. Ask one question of any list you are given: which office has asked for this paper, and can I see that in writing? Four documents carry an ordinary married surname change in Jharkhand. Everything beyond that should have a named office behind it.

Key Terms in the Marriage Name Change Document List

Key terms used in the document list for a name change after marriage
TermWhat it means in practice
Marriage certificateThe Government paper carrying both names. The centre of this whole list, because it is the only document that links them
Proof of identityA document an office accepts to establish who you are. UIDAI's published list includes a Government issued marriage certificate
Compulsory registrationThe state requiring marriages to be registered. In Jharkhand this comes from the 2017 Act, with a one year window provided
Registrar under the 2017 ActThe officer who registers births and deaths: the municipal body in a town, the Panchayat Sevak or similar official in a village
Chief RegistrarThe district level officer under the Act, above the local registrar, with a Registrar General at state level
Anand Marriage ActThe law under which a Sikh marriage is registered. Jharkhand's registration system publishes its own form for it
Special Marriage ActThe route used for an inter-faith or civil marriage, with a notice of intended marriage before the registration itself
AffidavitA sworn statement linking the two names. Needed only where an office asks, and best taken in that office's own format
Correction against fresh applicationFor PAN and Aadhaar you correct the existing record. A fresh application creates a second identity and, for PAN, a penalty
EndorsementWhat an insurer does to a policy to record the new name, on its own form. Not a new policy
Gazette notificationA published notice in Part IV of the Gazette of India. Not part of an ordinary married surname change
Document verificationThe stage at a job or admission where a panel checks that all your papers describe one person. This is what the folder of documents is really for

Documents Required After Marriage: Frequently Asked Questions

What documents are required for a name change after marriage in Jharkhand?+
Four carry the ordinary case: the marriage certificate, your Aadhaar, your PAN, and one old certificate in your maiden name such as the Class 10, which you carry rather than change. Add passport photographs, and an affidavit only where a particular office asks for one, preferably in that office's own format. A newspaper advertisement, a gazette notification and a court order are not part of an ordinary married surname change.
Do I need a gazette notification after marriage?+
For a plain surname change, no. The marriage certificate carries both names and UIDAI's published list of supporting documents accepts a Government issued marriage certificate as proof of identity. A gazette genuinely comes in only where the change goes beyond the surname, where the first name changes too, where a woman wants to resume her maiden surname while not divorced or widowed, or where no certificate exists at all to link the two names.
Is marriage registration compulsory in Jharkhand?+
The Jharkhand Compulsory Registration of Marriages Act, 2017 provides for compulsory registration of marriages of citizens residing in the state, within one year of the solemnisation. It puts the work with the officers who register births and deaths, meaning the municipal body in urban areas and the Panchayat Sevak or a similar official in rural areas, with a Chief Registrar at district level. The Act provides for it to come into force on a date notified by the State Government and we have not seen that notification, so confirm the current position at your own municipal office or panchayat.
We married years ago and never registered. How much is the penalty?+
Much less than people fear. The Act fixes the penalty for not registering without reasonable cause at Rs 5 per day, subject to a maximum of Rs 100. A false statement is a separate and far heavier matter, up to Rs 5,000. Because the late penalty is capped so low, registering the marriage late is almost always better than paying for a gazette file to work around the missing certificate. A state may prescribe its own registration fee separately, so ask at the counter what is currently charged.
Is my marriage invalid because it was never registered?+
No. The Act states that no marriage to which it applies shall be deemed invalid solely because it was not registered. Nobody at a counter can tell you your marriage does not count for want of a paper. What is missing is the proof that links your two names, which is a document problem with a document answer, and registering now usually solves it.
We already registered under the Hindu Marriage Act. Do we register again?+
No. The 2017 Act says a marriage already registered under the Hindu Marriage Act, the Special Marriage Act or a similar Act need not be registered again. Jharkhand's registration system, under the Department of Revenue, Registration and Land Reforms, publishes the forms for the Hindu Marriage Act, the notice of intended marriage and the Form 5 application under Section 15 of the Special Marriage Act, and the Anand Vivah registration form for a Sikh marriage.
Which document should I update first?+
Aadhaar, because nearly every other office verifies the new name against it. Then PAN, then the bank, then the voter card, the driving licence, the insurance policies and the employer record, and the passport once Aadhaar and PAN agree. Updating the bank before Aadhaar means doing the bank twice, once now and once at the next know your customer check when the two records do not match.
Do I need an affidavit for Aadhaar after marriage?+
Usually not. UIDAI's published list of supporting documents accepts a marriage certificate issued by a Central or State Government as proof of identity. Where an operator asks for an affidavit it is office practice rather than a published requirement. What matters far more is getting the spelling right the first time, because the Aadhaar fee is charged per attempt with no refund and the number of name updates is limited.
Should I get a new PAN card in my married name?+
Never apply fresh. It is a correction to your existing PAN and the number does not change. Holding a second PAN carries a penalty of Rs 10,000 under section 272B of the Income Tax Act. Send the correction with the marriage certificate and the updated Aadhaar, and what you get back is a reprinted card with the same number.
Do my school and college certificates need changing?+
No, and you should not try. Your Class 10 and Class 12 certificates, your degree and your caste certificate were correct on the day they were issued and lawfully carry your maiden name. An office that sees the maiden name there and the married name on your application wants the marriage certificate, not a reissued certificate. Board reissues are slow and often refused outright.
What if an office refuses to accept my marriage certificate?+
Do not argue at the counter. Ask for the refusal in writing, addressed to you, saying what is being refused and under which instruction. Most refusals end right there, because nothing is actually being refused under any instruction. Where it stands, you now know the real reason and can answer it, and if the matter has to go higher a written refusal is the only thing a grievance office will act on.
Do I have to change my name after marriage at all?+
No. No law in India requires it. Either spouse may take the other's surname, a wife may keep her own name throughout, or a couple may join both names. Plenty of women in Jharkhand keep the maiden name for their whole career with no difficulty. If an office tells you it is compulsory, ask for that instruction in writing, which usually ends the conversation.

Who wrote and checked this page

Written and maintained by the Jharkhandnamechange.com documentation desk, led by founder Vipin Chauhan, B.Tech LL.B, with 5+ years filing with the Department of Publication. The provisions described on this page come from the text of The Jharkhand Compulsory Registration of Marriages Act, 2017, linked below: registration of marriages of citizens residing in the state within one year of solemnisation; the registrar being the officer who registers births and deaths, meaning the municipal body in urban areas and the Panchayat Sevak or a similar official in rural areas, with a Chief Registrar at district level under a Registrar General; that a marriage already registered under the Hindu Marriage Act, the Special Marriage Act or a similar Act need not be registered again; the penalty of Rs 5 per day subject to a maximum of Rs 100 for not registering without reasonable cause, and up to Rs 5,000 for a false statement; and that no marriage is invalid solely because it was not registered. The Act provides for it to come into force on a date notified by the State Government and we have not seen that notification, nor have we seen any separate rules prescribing registration fees, which is why this page asks you to confirm the current position and charge at your own municipal office or panchayat. The four marriage registration forms, under the Hindu Marriage Act, the notice of intended marriage, the Form 5 application under Section 15 of the Special Marriage Act and the Anand Vivah registration form, are those published by Jharkhand's registration system under the Department of Revenue, Registration and Land Reforms. That a Government issued marriage certificate is accepted as proof of identity comes from the UIDAI list of supporting documents. The Rs 10,000 penalty for a second PAN is under section 272B of the Income Tax Act. We are a documentation consultancy and not advocates, and where a matter belongs with a family lawyer we say so. Documents Needed After Marriage in Eight Lines

The short version

  • Four papers carry the ordinary case: certificate, Aadhaar, PAN and one old certificate.
  • The marriage certificate does most of the work because it carries both names.
  • UIDAI accepts a Government issued marriage certificate as proof of identity.
  • No newspaper notice, no gazette and no court order for a plain surname change.
  • Jharkhand has its own 2017 Act providing for registration within one year.
  • The late penalty it fixes is Rs 5 per day, capped at Rs 100.
  • A marriage is not invalid just because it was never registered.
  • Update Aadhaar first, then PAN, and leave the old certificates alone.

Before you pay for a gazette after marriage, check whether you can simply register.

Send your marriage certificate and Aadhaar, and we will tell you exactly which papers each office needs and in what order.
