Name Change in Gas Connection in Jharkhand
Before anybody writes to a distributor, work out which of three things is actually wrong, because they are fixed in three different places. Your own name may simply be spelt wrongly on the connection. The connection may stand in a late parent's name and need transferring. Or, most often of all, the subsidy has stopped arriving and the family assumes the gas record is at fault, when under PAHAL the money is paid into a bank account and the problem sits in the Aadhaar and bank link rather than in the gas book at all. And if yours is an Ujjwala connection, there is a rule you need to know before you ask for anything: it can only be held in an adult woman's name.
Separate the three before you go anywhere. One, the spelling on your own connection is wrong. That is a correction with your distributor, using the standard KYC form, and nothing else is involved. Two, the connection is in somebody else's name, usually a parent who has died. That is a transfer, and the document that matters is the one your distributor issued showing the refundable deposit for the cylinder and regulator, because that deposit is what is actually moving. Three, and this is the commonest of all, the subsidy has stopped. Families assume the gas record is wrong. Usually it is not. Under PAHAL, as the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has stated, all domestic cylinders are sold at non-subsidised prices and "the applicable subsidy is transferred directly into the bank account of the consumers", with an SMS when it lands. So the names that have to agree are the ones on your Aadhaar and your bank account. As of 1 July 2025 the Ministry put Aadhaar seeding at 92.44 per cent of active LPG consumers out of a total 33.05 crore, which tells you how much of the system now runs on that link. If yours is an Ujjwala connection, read the third section before asking for anything, because the scheme's own FAQ says "PMUY connections can only be released in the name of adult female members of the Poor household", and a household is not supposed to hold more than one connection at all.
Three Different Problems Behind One Gas Connection Name Change
Almost everyone who rings us about a gas connection describes it the same way, and the three cases behind that description go to three different places. Work out which is yours before anybody fills a form.
| What is actually wrong | Where it is fixed |
|---|---|
| 1. Your own name is spelt wrongly on your own connection | With your distributor, as a KYC correction on the standard form, with your identity documents. Nothing is transferred and nobody else is involved. Bring the form of your name that your Aadhaar and bank carry, not a third version |
| 2. The connection stands in a late parent's or another person's name | A transfer, with your distributor. What is really moving is the refundable deposit for the cylinder and regulator, so the document the distributor issued for that deposit is the one to find before you go. Ask the distributor by name which papers it needs, because this varies |
| 3. The subsidy has stopped arriving and you assume the gas record is at fault | Usually not the gas record at all. The subsidy is paid into a bank account, so the link to check is Aadhaar and the bank. This is the largest single group of people who come to us about gas, and most of them need no change to the connection whatsoever |
| You have moved house and want the connection at the new address | A different transaction again, and an address matter rather than a name one. Do not bundle it into a name request, because mixed requests stall |
| Yours is an Ujjwala connection and you want it in a different family member's name | Read the Ujjwala section below before you ask, because the scheme's own rule is that these connections are released in the name of an adult woman of the household |
When the Real Problem Is the Subsidy and Not the Gas Record
This section exists because most families who come to us about a gas connection name do not have a gas connection problem. They have a payment link problem, and the gas book is innocent.
| How it works | What that means for a name question |
|---|---|
| Under PAHAL, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has stated that all domestic LPG cylinders are sold at non-subsidised prices and "the applicable subsidy is transferred directly into the bank account of the consumers", with an SMS confirming the deposit | The money never passes through the gas book. It goes cylinder, then bank account. So the names that must agree are the ones on your Aadhaar and your bank account, and a wrong spelling in the distributor's register is not by itself the reason the money stopped |
| Aadhaar authentication is used to identify, authenticate and de-duplicate beneficiaries | Which is why the Aadhaar link is where these failures usually sit. If the Aadhaar seeding is broken, or the bank account is closed, dormant or in a different form of your name, nothing arrives |
| As of 1 July 2025 the Ministry put Aadhaar seeding at 92.44 per cent of active LPG consumers out of a total 33.05 crore | Almost the whole system now runs on that link, so being in the remaining share is itself worth checking. Ask the distributor whether your Aadhaar is seeded in their database |
| The three common breakages, in the order worth checking | One, the bank account is closed, dormant or changed. Two, the account is in a different form of your name from the Aadhaar. Three, the Aadhaar is not seeded against the connection. Only after all three are ruled out is the gas register worth arguing about |
| A married woman whose bank account is still in her maiden form | Very common in this state and a frequent cause. Her Aadhaar and her bank must agree before anything downstream works. The position is on our Kumari or Devi to the husband surname page |
Ujjwala Connections and the Rule About Whose Name It Can Be In
Jharkhand holds a very large number of Ujjwala connections, and this is the section families most need and least expect. An Ujjwala connection is not an ordinary connection that happens to have been free. It carries conditions, and two of them decide what you may sensibly ask for.
| The condition | What it means for your request |
|---|---|
| The scheme's own FAQ states that "PMUY connections can only be released in the name of adult female members of the Poor household" | So a request to move an Ujjwala connection into a husband's or son's name is asking for something that cuts against the basis on which the connection exists. Correcting a woman's name is a different matter entirely and is perfectly ordinary, which is the request most families actually need |
| Eligibility requires that "the household must not have an existing LPG connection registered in the name of any family member" listed in the family composition document | One connection per household is the premise. This matters because families sometimes try to use a name change to regularise a second connection, and that is the opposite of a safe request |
| Aadhaar authentication is used for de-duplication, and the Ministry has reported 8.49 lakh ineligible PMUY connections terminated through that work | Duplicates are actively found and cancelled. If your household holds more than one connection, get honest advice about it rather than drawing attention with a name request that will not survive a check |
| The Ministry reported that as of 1 July 2025 biometric Aadhaar authentication was complete for 67 per cent of existing PMUY beneficiaries, and that all new consumers are authenticated before a connection is released | If the woman holding the connection has not completed that authentication, that may be the live issue rather than the spelling of her name. Ask the distributor what is pending on the connection |
| The scheme's documents include the KYC form, Aadhaar of the applicant and adult family members, address proof, bank details and a ration card or equivalent family composition document | Which is why a ration card difference so often surfaces alongside a gas question in this state. The route for that is on our name change in ration card page |
| What the scheme's FAQ does not address | It does not set out a procedure for changing or transferring the registered name on an active PMUY connection. On an address transfer it says the customer submits "the request letter along with proof of identity to the attached distributor". So for a name question, your distributor's answer is the procedure |
How to Change a Name on a Gas Connection in Jharkhand, Step by Step
Say which of the three it is
A wrong spelling on your own connection, a connection in somebody else's name, or a stopped subsidy. Write the answer in one sentence before anybody fills a form.
If the subsidy is the issue, check the bank first
Is the linked account alive, in your name, and is your Aadhaar seeded against the connection? Find the last subsidy SMS and note its date. Most of these end here with the gas record untouched.
Find out which company and which distributor
The name of the oil company and the distributor are on the gas book and on your bills. You are dealing with your own distributor, and its answer on documents is the one that counts.
Check whether it is an Ujjwala connection
Because it can only be held in an adult woman's name, and a household is not meant to hold more than one connection. Knowing this before you ask saves an awkward conversation.
Settle the final form of the name
The same form as Aadhaar and the bank account, letter by letter. There is no point correcting the gas record into a version the payment chain does not recognise.
Ask the distributor in writing what it needs
For a correction, the standard KYC form and identity documents. For a transfer, the papers that release the refundable deposit. Requirements differ, so let the distributor's written answer be your list.
Find the deposit document before a transfer
The paper the distributor issued showing the deposit for the cylinder and regulator. That deposit is what is actually moving, and a transfer is much harder without it. Say at the outset if it is lost.
Check the next refill and the next subsidy
The proof that this worked is a booking that goes through and a subsidy SMS that arrives. Do not treat an acknowledgement as the end of the matter.
The Aadhaar route is on our name change in Aadhaar card page, the bank end on the bank records page, and the other household utility that raises the same questions is on our electricity bill page.
Central Gazette Process for a Name From Jharkhand, and Where It Fits a Gas Connection
No district in Jharkhand has a gazette counter, so a genuine file goes from Ranchi, Jamshedpur, Dhanbad, Bokaro, Hazaribagh, Deoghar or anywhere else in the state to the Department of Publication, Civil Lines, Delhi 110054, and the notice publishes in Part IV of the Gazette of India. As reported in July 2025 the Finance Department stopped personal name change notifications from the Jharkhand Government Press with immediate effect, so there is no state alternative to fall back on.
The Eight Steps of a Name File Sent From Jharkhand
Settle the final name first
Letter by letter, with the spacing you want, and then use exactly that everywhere, Aadhaar included. A corrigendum after publication is a second fee and a second wait.
Pick the category, then its proforma
A genuine change of name is change of Name Adult or Major. A wrongly typed spelling is the public notice for a wrongly written name. Twelve categories exist and only one is yours.
Type the proforma in duplicate
Two originals with two witnesses giving signature, full name, address and mobile number on both copies. A change of name is signed in the old name; a public notice is signed in your own name.
Fill the employment field if it is a change of name
The adult proforma asks for the post of the applicant and the office or company name, a field the public notice form does not have. Salaried applicants leave it blank and the file comes back.
Publish and keep the original paper
One of the daily local leading newspapers, carrying both names in full, the father or husband name and the residential address. The whole original paper goes in the file, not a cutting.
Pay only through BharatKosh
The Non Tax Receipt Portal and nowhere else since October 2018. Select the Department of Publication by name, read the amount the portal shows on the day, pay in your own name and print the e-receipt.
Check every date, then post it yourself
Nothing in the file older than one year. Personally or by post or courier only, never through an agent or advocate. Photocopy everything first, because nothing sent in comes back.
Read the notice, then update the records
Check every word the day it publishes, download the e-Gazette copy of that Part IV issue, and then work through Aadhaar first and the gas connection after it.
The Five Papers in the File, and What Is Checked in Each
| The paper | What is checked in it, clause by clause |
|---|---|
| 1. The proforma, in duplicate | That it is the right category format; the existing full name exactly as your documents carry it; the new full name exactly as settled; the father or husband name; the full address with pin code; the post and office or company name where it is a change of name; the signature in the right name for the category; two witnesses complete with signature, full name, address and mobile number |
| 2. The affidavit or undertaking | The same names and address as the proforma, word for word, with wording matching the category. On Rs 100 non-judicial stamp paper as our safe default |
| 3. The original newspaper | The original paper, not a cutting; the paper name and date of publication visible; both names carried; the father or husband name and residential address; dated within the last year |
| 4. Photographs, identity proof and any category paper | Two self attested passport photographs; self attested identity and address proof matching the proforma address; both witnesses proofs; and, in a public notice file, the attested photocopy of the connected document carrying the error |
| 5. The CD, its certificate and the BharatKosh receipt | MS Word, without the witness portion, with the name typed in place of the signature; the certificate that the hard copy and the soft copy are the same; the forwarding letter to the Controller of Publication with a telephone number and email; the e-receipt |
The posting detail is on the sending the file to Delhi page, the change of name wording on the proforma format page and the public notice wording on the public notice proforma page, the charge by category on the fee and undertaking page, the reasons files come back on the rejection reasons page, and the download on the download page.
What a Gas Connection Name Change Costs in Jharkhand
| Item | Cost | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Checking the subsidy link, which is where most of these end | Nothing. Looking at whether the linked bank account is alive and in your name, and whether Aadhaar is seeded against the connection, costs no money at all. It is also the step most likely to solve the problem | An evening |
| KYC correction of a spelling with the distributor | The distributor's own charge, if any. We do not print a figure, because we have not verified one, and charges circulating online are often for a different company or a different transaction | Set by the distributor. We do not print a timeline we have not verified |
| Transfer of a connection to another family member | Whatever the distributor requires for releasing and re-lodging the refundable deposit for the cylinder and regulator. Ask your own distributor, by name, before assuming anything | Set by the distributor |
| Fixing the bank account or the Aadhaar link, where that is the real problem | The bank's own charges, and Aadhaar charges a fee per attempt with no refund while limiting how often a name may be updated. Decide the final form of the name before you go | Set by each office |
| Ration card correction, where the family composition document is the one that differs | The issuing office's own charge. We do not print office charges we have not verified | Set by the office |
| Affidavit, where the distributor asks for one | Rs 100 non-judicial stamp paper and the notary charge. Two originals, because the office keeps one. Do not buy it before somebody asks | The same day |
| Government printing charge, only in a genuine change of your own name | The guidelines print Rs 1,100 for an adult change of name and Rs 1,400 for a public notice, for FY 2016 to 2017, each with the caveat that the charge varies each financial year and from case to case. What BharatKosh shows on the payment screen the day you pay is the figure that counts | Part IV publishes weekly, so allow several weeks from posting |
| Our charge | Quoted on your papers before you pay anything, and confirmed in writing. We print no service price on any page of this site | |
For a very large share of the families who ask us about this, the honest answer is that nothing needs to be paid and nothing needs to be changed on the gas connection, because the problem was a bank account or an Aadhaar link. We would rather tell you that in one message than sell you a correction you do not need. Our name change cost page sets out the line items in full.
Send the gas book and we will find the real problem
Photograph the gas book or consumer card showing the oil company, the distributor name, the consumer number and the name as printed. Then the Aadhaar of the person the connection is in, and the bank passbook page for the account the subsidy is meant to reach. If the subsidy has stopped, tell us the date of the last subsidy SMS, because that single fact tells us more than anything else you can send. Say whether it is an Ujjwala connection, and whether anybody else in the household holds one. Our first reply tells you whether this is a KYC correction, a transfer, or a payment link problem that needs no change to the gas record at all. Where the answer is that nothing needs doing, we will say so. Details on the contact page.

Myths About a Gas Connection Name Change
| What people are told | What is actually so |
|---|---|
| The subsidy stopped because the name on the gas connection is wrong | Usually not. Under PAHAL the subsidy is "transferred directly into the bank account of the consumers", so the money never passes through the gas book. Check the bank account and the Aadhaar link before touching the connection |
| An Ujjwala connection can be moved into the husband's name | The scheme's own FAQ says "PMUY connections can only be released in the name of adult female members of the Poor household". Correcting the woman's name is ordinary and usually what the family actually needs. Moving it to a man is asking against the basis of the connection |
| A name change can regularise a second connection in the house | It cannot, and attempting it is risky. Eligibility requires that the household holds no existing connection in any family member's name, de-duplication is run on Aadhaar authentication, and the Ministry has reported 8.49 lakh ineligible PMUY connections terminated |
| You need a gazette notification for a gas connection | No. A connection is corrected or transferred at the distributor, and nothing is published. No gazette has ever restarted a subsidy |
| Any gas agency can handle it | You deal with your own distributor, under your own oil company. Its written answer on documents is the list that matters, not a general article about a different company |
| A transfer after a death is just a name correction | It is a transfer, and what actually moves is the refundable deposit for the cylinder and regulator. Find the document the distributor issued for that deposit before you go, and say at the outset if it is lost |
| Correct the gas record to match the oldest certificate you hold | Correct it to the form your Aadhaar and bank account carry, because that is the chain the money travels down. A gas book matching an old marksheet and nothing else helps nobody |
| The subsidy arriving or not is hard to prove | It is not. The transfer is confirmed by SMS, so the date of the last subsidy message on the registered mobile is solid evidence and the most useful thing you can carry to a counter |
Key Terms in a Gas Connection Name Change
| Term | What it means in practice |
|---|---|
| Distributor | The gas agency that holds your connection, under one of the oil companies. Your distributor is who you deal with, and its written answer on documents is the list that counts |
| Consumer number | The number identifying your connection, printed on the gas book and your bills. Quote it in every request |
| PAHAL | The scheme under which domestic cylinders are sold at non-subsidised prices and the subsidy is transferred directly into the consumer's bank account |
| Direct benefit transfer | Payment of a benefit straight into a bank account rather than as a discount at the point of sale. The reason the bank link matters more than the gas book |
| Aadhaar seeding | Linking the Aadhaar number to the connection in the oil company's database. Used for identification, authentication and de-duplication |
| De-duplication | Finding and removing more than one connection held by the same household. Actively run, and the reason a second connection is not something to draw attention to |
| PMUY or Ujjwala | The scheme under which connections are released in the name of an adult woman of a poor household, with no existing connection in any family member's name |
| Refundable deposit | The security held for the cylinder and the regulator. On a transfer this is what is really moving, which is why the document evidencing it matters |
| KYC form | The standard form on which identity details are recorded or corrected with the distributor |
| Family composition document | Usually the ration card, used to establish who is in the household. A difference here often surfaces alongside a gas question |
| Transfer | Moving the connection to a different person. A different request from correcting a spelling, and it should be asked for by its right name |
| Received stamp | The distributor's acknowledgement on your own copy of the request. Without it, a request never happened |
