JAC Marksheet and Aadhaar Name Mismatch

Two documents, one person, two spellings. The instinct is to fix the Aadhaar, because a Seva Kendra is near and a board feels far away. That instinct costs people the most. UIDAI's own rule allows a name update in Aadhaar twice in a lifetime, and a one-letter spelling fix uses up a turn exactly like a full surname change. Meanwhile the Class 10 certificate is the document a recruitment panel, a college and a passport office actually read first, and it is the one that never changes on its own. So the question this page answers is not how to update Aadhaar. It is which of your two records is the anchor, and therefore which one everything else should be brought to.

2Name updates allowed in Aadhaar in a lifetime
6Categories that reach Aadhaar without any gazette
1Anchor certificate the panels actually read
0Refund if an Aadhaar update is rejected
Quick answer

When a JAC marksheet and an Aadhaar card carry different spellings of one name, decide the anchor before you touch either. In almost every case the anchor is the Class 10 certificate, because it is what a recruitment panel, a college, a passport office and an employer read first, and because a board certificate can only be corrected against the school's admission register, which is a slower and narrower door than an Aadhaar counter. Aadhaar, by contrast, is easier to change but limited: UIDAI's own rules allow a name update twice in a lifetime, and a small spelling correction consumes one of those two turns just as a full surname change does. The fee is charged per attempt and is not refunded if the request is rejected. So the order is usually: settle which written form is correct, correct the school record if that is the one at fault, and then bring Aadhaar, PAN, the bank and everything else to it. There are four situations. If the marksheet is right and Aadhaar is wrong, update Aadhaar and stop. If Aadhaar is right and the marksheet is wrong, the school route applies and Aadhaar stays untouched. If both are wrong in different ways, fix the school record first and then use one Aadhaar update to reach the final form. And if the difference is only script, spacing or an expanded initial, often nothing needs doing at all, because UIDAI's own standard operating procedure of 28 October 2021 lists categories, including transliteration and regional language differences, that do not require a gazette. While any of this runs, a notarised one-and-the-same-person affidavit keeps a college admission, a bank account or an employer file moving.

The pages ranking for this problem tell you how to update Aadhaar. Almost none of them tell you whether you should. That is the expensive gap, because an Aadhaar name update is one of only two you will ever get, and people routinely spend one of them making Aadhaar match a marksheet that was itself wrong, then discover the real fix later and find the limit used up.

If the marksheet is the wrong one, start on the JAC certificate name correction page. If the school says its register carries the same error, the route is on the register wrong spelling page.

Key takeaways

  • Decide the anchor first; changing the easy document is how people waste an update.
  • Aadhaar allows two name updates in a lifetime, and a spelling fix uses one.
  • A board certificate is corrected against the school register, not against Aadhaar.
  • Script, spacing and initial differences often need nothing done at all.
  • A rejected Aadhaar attempt costs the fee and gets no refund.
  • An affidavit keeps files moving while the real correction runs.

Why the Class 10 Certificate Is the Anchor and Aadhaar Is Not

JAC marksheet and Aadhaar name mismatch: the Class 10 certificate and the Aadhaar card carrying two spellings of one name
The easy document to change is rarely the one that should be changed.

An anchor is not the document you like best. It is the one other people treat as the source of truth about you, and the one that is hardest to alter. On both counts the Class 10 certificate wins, and that is why it decides the spelling your whole file will carry.

It is read first

Recruitment panels, colleges, passport offices and employers open the Class 10 certificate before anything else, because it fixes your name and date of birth at a point when you were a child and nobody was choosing anything.

It is hard to change

A board corrects it only against the school's admission register. That narrow door is exactly what gives the certificate its weight, and it is also why you should not plan on changing it casually.

Aadhaar is the opposite

Easy to update at a Seva Kendra, and precisely because it is easy, nobody treats it as proof of what your name has always been. It follows your other documents; it does not lead them.

The mistake we see most. A student whose marksheet is misspelt updates Aadhaar to match the marksheet, so that the two agree. Now both documents carry the wrong name, one of two lifetime Aadhaar updates is gone, and the real correction at the board still has to happen. Make the marksheet right first, then move Aadhaar once, to the final form.

The Four JAC Marksheet and Aadhaar Mismatch Cases

The four mismatch cases and what each one needs
Your situationWhat to doWhat it costs you
The marksheet is right, Aadhaar is wrongOne Aadhaar update at a Seva Kendra with the certificate as supporting proof, and stop thereOne of your two lifetime updates, plus the update fee
Aadhaar is right, the marksheet is wrongThe school route, corrected against the admission register; leave Aadhaar completely aloneThe board's prescribed fee, and no Aadhaar turn used at all
Both are wrong, in different waysSettle the correct form on paper, fix the school record first, then move Aadhaar once to the final formOne Aadhaar turn if you sequence it properly, two if you rush
Only script, spacing or an initial differsUsually nothing; carry a one-and-the-same-person affidavit if an office objectsThe affidavit only, commonly Rs 100 to Rs 500
The school says its register carries the same errorThe public notice route, then bring Aadhaar to the published formSee the register wrong spelling page
Deciding which one is right is the actual work. Look at the oldest records you have: the birth certificate, the admission register entry, the transfer certificate from the earlier school, and how your parents and siblings spell the family name on their own papers. The form that runs through the oldest documents is normally the one to keep, not the one on the newest card.

The Aadhaar Two-Update Name Limit and What Counts Against It

This is the rule that makes the whole decision urgent, and most people learn it only after they have used both turns. UIDAI allows a name in Aadhaar to be updated twice in a lifetime, a date of birth once and gender once. There is no third name update in the ordinary way.

What UIDAI's rules say about name updates in Aadhaar
SituationThe positionWhat it means for you
Minor name edit, initials or surnameName can be updated twice in a lifetimeA one-letter fix spends a turn, so never treat it as a small thing
Full name change or first name changeUIDAI's SOP of 28 October 2021 requires the gazette notification to be uploaded as the proof of identityFor a chosen new name, the gazette comes first and Aadhaar follows
Marriage, divorce or adoptionThe certificate or order is the supporting documentA gazette is generally not needed for these at all
FeeCommonly Rs 50 to Rs 75 per attemptCharged per attempt and not refunded if the request is rejected
Limit exhaustedException processing through the UIDAI regional officeNot automatic; it is a request with documents and an enquiry, covered below
Read the operator's screen before you give the biometric. Almost every wasted update we see began with someone confirming an entry they had not read letter by letter. Once it is done, it is done, and the correction of that mistake spends your second turn. Ask the operator to turn the screen and read the name aloud with them.

When a Marksheet and Aadhaar Difference Needs Nothing Done

Not every difference is a problem, and in Jharkhand a great many are not. UIDAI's standard operating procedure of 28 October 2021 sets out categories that are treated as ordinary updates rather than as a name change needing a gazette, and several of them describe exactly what happens here when a name travels between languages.

Transliteration and script

A name written one way in Hindi and another in English, or spelt by ear at one counter and differently at another, is a transliteration difference. It is not a new name, and it does not need a gazette.

Initials and sequence

An initial expanded on one document and left short on another, a middle name added, or the order of names arranged differently, are handled as ordinary edits rather than as a change of name.

Regional language updates

A Santali, Mundari, Kurukh, Ho, Nagpuri, Bhojpuri, Bengali or Urdu name recorded into a Hindi register is the ordinary story of this state, and the SOP recognises regional language updates in its list.

Test it the way an office will. Put the two documents side by side and ask whether a stranger would read them as the same person. If the only difference is a vowel, a space or an expanded initial, most counters accept them together with an affidavit. If a stranger would read two different people, that is when you fix a record. The full router is on the spelling correction page, and tribal surnames on the tribal surname page.

Where a Gazette Actually Comes Into a Marksheet and Aadhaar Mismatch

Most of this page is about avoiding a gazette, so it is worth being precise about the two places one genuinely belongs. Both run to the same office, because there is no gazette counter anywhere in Jharkhand: the file is built locally and posted to the Department of Publication, Civil Lines, Delhi 110054, and the notice appears in Part IV of the Gazette of India.

You are choosing a new name

Not fixing a misspelling, but taking a different name. UIDAI's SOP of 28 October 2021 requires the gazette notification as the proof of identity for a full name change or a change in the first name, so here the gazette comes first and Aadhaar follows it. The route is on the gazette name change page.

The school register repeats the error

The board cannot correct a certificate its own register agrees with, so the instrument becomes a public notice quoting the wrong spelling exactly as printed. That is a different proforma from a change of name, and it is on the register wrong spelling page.

Everything else on this page is cheaper than both. If your case is one of the four ordinary ones, you should not be paying a Government gazette fee at all, and any page telling you a mismatch automatically needs a gazette is describing a sale rather than the rule.

The Order to Fix a Marksheet and Aadhaar Mismatch In

1

Decide the correct form

Lay out the birth certificate, the admission register entry, the transfer certificate and the family's papers, and choose the form that runs through the oldest records.

2

Swear a one-and-the-same-person affidavit

Do this in week one if anything is pending, a college form, a bank account or a job file. It buys you time to do the rest properly.

3

Fix the school record if that is the wrong one

Through the school, against the admission register, escalating to the DEO or DSE if it stalls; the public notice route only if the register repeats the error.

4

Then move Aadhaar once, then everything else

Aadhaar to the final form, then PAN, the bank, the caste certificate, the passport and any employment or examination record.

The full record update order is on the name change process page, and the Aadhaar side in detail on the Aadhaar name change page.

When Your Two Aadhaar Name Updates Are Already Used Up

People reach this page having already spent both turns, usually one on a marriage surname and one on a spelling fix, and now needing a third because the real correction finally happened at the board. It is not the end, but it is no longer a counter job.

The request is rejected first

UIDAI's own guidance is that once the update is rejected for the limit being exceeded, you then ask for exception processing, quoting the enrolment ID from that rejected attempt. The rejection is part of the route, not the end of it.

Ask for exception processing

Through the toll-free number 1947 or the UIDAI helpdesk email, requesting exception processing through the regional office and giving the enrolment ID. The regional office listed for this state is at the JIADA Central Office Building, Namkum Industrial Area, Ranchi.

Carry the strongest document

A gazette notification, a court order, or the corrected board certificate with the school's letter. The enquiry looks for a reason the third update is genuine, and a corrected anchor document is the best reason there is.

This is exactly why the order on this page matters. Everything here is designed so that you spend at most one Aadhaar turn. If you have not used both yet, fix the school record first and you will almost certainly never need this section.

Which Office Asks for the Marksheet and Which Asks for Aadhaar

Which document each office reads first in a name mismatch
OfficeReads firstWhat to carry
Recruitment panels, JSSC and JPSC verificationThe Class 10 certificate, for name and date of birthCertificate, affidavit and any correction paperwork; see the verification page
Colleges and universitiesThe Class 10 and Class 12 certificatesAffidavit while a correction runs; a linking letter afterwards
Passport officeSupporting documents in the new name, with Aadhaar and PAN among themUpdate Aadhaar and PAN before applying; see the passport page
Banks and KYCAadhaar and PAN, with the certificate as backupThe RBI position keeps an old-name document valid alongside; see the bank records page
Scholarships and caste certificate checksThe certificate and the caste certificate togetherMake that pair agree before the deadline, not after
A panel tests consistency, not correctness. Nobody at a verification desk is deciding which spelling of your surname is historically right. They are checking whether your documents agree with each other. That is why bringing everything to one form matters more than which form you pick, as long as the anchor supports it.

Marksheet and Aadhaar Mismatch Myths and Mistakes

The myths

  • "Aadhaar is the main identity document, so make everything match it"; panels and boards read the Class 10 certificate first.
  • "A spelling correction does not count against the Aadhaar limit"; treat a minor edit as spending one of your two turns.
  • "Any mismatch needs a gazette"; UIDAI's own SOP lists categories, including transliteration and regional language updates, that do not.
  • "A rejected attempt is free"; the fee is charged per attempt and not refunded.
  • "The board will accept your Aadhaar as proof"; it corrects against the school's admission register.

The mistakes

  • Updating Aadhaar to match a marksheet that was itself wrong.
  • Confirming the operator's entry without reading the screen letter by letter.
  • Using both Aadhaar turns before the board correction is finished.
  • Waiting for the correction instead of swearing an affidavit on day one.
  • Fixing the marksheet and leaving the caste certificate with the old spelling.

JAC Marksheet and Aadhaar Mismatch: Frequently Asked Questions

My marksheet and Aadhaar have different spellings. Which one do I change?+
Start from which one is correct, not which one is easier. In almost every case the Class 10 certificate is the anchor, because panels, colleges and passport offices read it first and because a board only corrects it against the school's admission register. If the marksheet is right, update Aadhaar once and stop. If the marksheet is wrong, fix it at the board and leave Aadhaar alone until the final form is settled.
How many times can I change my name in Aadhaar?+
Twice in a lifetime under UIDAI's rules, with date of birth once and gender once. A minor edit counts the same as a bigger change, so treat a one-letter spelling fix as spending a turn. The fee is charged per attempt and is not refunded if the request is rejected, which is why reading the operator's screen before giving your biometric matters so much.
Does a small spelling difference really need a gazette?+
Usually not. UIDAI's standard operating procedure of 28 October 2021 sets out categories treated as ordinary updates rather than a name change needing a gazette, and they include typographical and transliteration errors and regional language updates. A gazette notification is required as the proof of identity for a full name change or a change in the first name, which is a different thing from a misspelling.
I already used both Aadhaar name updates. What now?+
You go through exception processing. UIDAI's own guidance is to make the request, let it be rejected for the limit being exceeded, then call 1947 or email the helpdesk asking for exception processing through the regional office, quoting the enrolment ID from that attempt. Carry the strongest document you have, a gazette notification, a court order or the corrected board certificate with the school's letter. The regional office listed for this state is at the JIADA Central Office Building, Namkum Industrial Area, Ranchi.
Can I get the board to correct the marksheet using my Aadhaar?+
No. A board corrects a certificate to match its own source record, chiefly the school's admission register. Your Aadhaar is supporting evidence that the register is right and the print is wrong. If the register agrees with the certificate, no number of cards will move the board, and the route becomes a public notice instead.
What do I do right now, while all this is pending?+
Swear a notarised one-and-the-same-person affidavit this week, naming both spellings and stating they are one person. It does not correct anything, but it is what keeps a college admission, a bank account, a scholarship or an employer file moving while the real correction runs. Almost every delay we see could have been avoided by doing this on day one instead of month three.
Will a bank accept my documents if the names differ?+
Generally yes, with the affidavit, and the RBI position also keeps an old-name officially valid document usable alongside a marriage certificate or gazette. Banks are among the easier counters. Recruitment verification is the strict one, because a panel is checking whether your papers agree with each other rather than deciding which spelling is right.
My name differs only because of Hindi and English spelling. Is that a mismatch?+
Usually it is a transliteration difference rather than a mismatch, and UIDAI's SOP treats that as an ordinary update rather than a name change. Put the two documents side by side and ask whether a stranger would read them as the same person. If the only difference is a vowel, a space or an expanded initial, carry an affidavit and get on with your life.
Should I fix PAN at the same time?+
After Aadhaar, not before. The order that saves repeat work is Aadhaar, then PAN, then the bank, then the caste certificate, the passport and any employment record. PAN correction costs Rs 72 or Rs 107 and is done online from anywhere, and the PAN number itself never changes.
My caste certificate has a third spelling. Does that matter?+
It matters a great deal for ST and SC students, because the caste certificate and the Class 10 certificate are read together at scholarship, admission and recruitment stages. Bring both to the same form before a deadline arrives. The tribal surname page explains how to choose one written form when a name crosses languages.
Can you handle this for me?+
We do the decision and the drafting: which document is the anchor, which of the four cases you are in, the affidavit wording, the school correction wording and, if it is genuinely needed, the gazette file. The Seva Kendra visit and the school visit are yours, and the applicant signs their own papers. The free part, the route check, is the part that usually saves the money.
Is my certificate from before 2000 handled the same way?+
The logic is identical but the board is not. A certificate issued before 2000 came from the Bihar School Examination Board, and that board corrects it through the school that holds the admission register. The Aadhaar side of the decision, including the two-update limit, does not change at all.

The Aadhaar limits, the treatment of a full or first name change and the exception handling route follow UIDAI's own circulars, its standard operating procedure dated 28 October 2021 and its published guidance; the regional office address is as UIDAI lists it and should be confirmed before a visit. We do not print a board correction fee because the figures circulating online belong to other boards.
