Father's Name Correction in a PAN Card in Jharkhand
PAN is the one card in your file where a parent's name is printed on the card and held in the income tax record. That single fact changes everything. On a bank passbook or an employment file a notarised affidavit is usually enough to explain a difference, and people assume the same trick works here. It does not. A printed field is changed only by the correction form, with proof, and the department's own record moves with it. The good news is that this is one of the quickest corrections in the whole name-change business: it is done online from anywhere in Jharkhand, your PAN number never changes, and there is a rule from December 2018 that lets some applicants decide whose parent name is printed at all.
A father's name printed wrongly on a PAN card is corrected through the PAN change request, the same form used for a new PAN or a correction in PAN data, with the box beside the father's name field ticked so the department knows which entry to alter. You file it online through either of the two service providers the department works with, upload proof, pay the fee and keep the fifteen-digit acknowledgement number for tracking. Two rules save people real money here. First, your PAN number never changes in a correction, so the corrected card carries the same number and every link you have already made stays intact. Second, never apply for a fresh PAN to get a clean card, because holding more than one PAN attracts a penalty of Rs 10,000 under section 272B of the Income-tax Act, and untangling a second PAN is far harder than correcting the first. There is also a rule that very few people know about. A CBDT notification dated 5 December 2018 changed the PAN application forms so that the father's name is mandatory except where the mother is a single parent and the applicant chooses to furnish the mother's name only, and it also lets the applicant say which parent's name is to be printed on the card. So for a single mother's child, the field that is causing the trouble may not have to appear at all. For everyone else, the proof is your father's own identity document, and where the spelling on his papers is itself inconsistent, settle the final spelling first, because correcting PAN to a version nothing else uses simply moves the problem.
If several of your documents disagree about his name, do not start here. Start with the router on the father's name mismatch page, which names the six causes and tells you which records to leave alone. If your own name is the problem rather than your father's, that is the PAN name change page.

Why a PAN Father's Name Correction Is Not Like the Others
Across the rest of your file, a father's name difference is usually something you explain. A bank, an employer or a verification desk accepts a notarised statement that two versions mean one person, and life moves on. PAN behaves differently for one simple reason.
It is on the card
The father's name is printed on the face of the PAN card, so anybody comparing your papers can read the difference without asking you. There is nothing to explain away.
It is in the department's record
Behind the card sits the PAN data held by the Income Tax Department. An affidavit does not reach that record. Only a change request does, which is why the correction is a form and not a letter.
Which is good news, mostly
Because it is a form, it is predictable and quick. No school, no register, no waiting on an officer's discretion. Of every record in the father's name cluster, this is the one you can actually finish in weeks from your own phone.
The 2018 Rule That Lets You Choose the Parent Name on a PAN Card
This is the part of the subject that almost no page covers, and for some families it removes the problem instead of solving it. The PAN application forms were amended by a Central Board of Direct Taxes notification dated 5 December 2018, and two things came out of it.
The father's name is no longer unconditional
The field now reads as mandatory except where the mother is a single parent and the applicant is applying by furnishing the mother's name only. The form carries a plain question asking whether the mother is a single parent and whether you wish to apply with her name alone.
For a child of a single mother, that means the entry causing the mismatch may not need to be carried at all.
You can say which parent's name is printed
The same amendment lets the applicant indicate which parent's name should appear on the card. So a family where the mother's name is consistent everywhere and the father's name is a mess across old papers has a real choice to consider, rather than being forced to chase the harder record.
The mother's side of this is covered on the mother's name page.
How to Correct the Father's Name on a PAN Card
Settle the final spelling first
Write his name out once, in full, with initials and prefixes decided. Correcting PAN to a version no other document uses is the commonest wasted fee on this page.
Open the change request, not a new PAN application
The form is the request for a new PAN card or changes or correction in PAN data, filed online through either service provider the department works with.
Tick the box beside the father's name field
This is the step people miss. The form has a box against each field, and only the ticked fields are treated as a correction request. Type the correct name in full and leave the other fields as they are.
Attach proof, pay, keep the acknowledgement
Upload his identity document, pay the fee, and save the fifteen-digit acknowledgement number, which is how you track it and how you answer a bank that asks what is happening.
What Proof a Father's Name Correction Needs
The department is matching your request against a document that shows the correct spelling. Your own certificates are not the point here; his papers are.
| Document | What it shows | How useful |
|---|---|---|
| His Aadhaar card | How his name is written today, on the most widely held record | The usual first choice, and generally enough on its own |
| His passport | A strong, verified spelling | The strongest single document where he has one |
| His voter card or driving licence | An alternative government record of the spelling | Accepted; useful where Aadhaar itself is inconsistent |
| Your birth certificate | An independent record naming your father | Good supporting evidence, especially for an old mismatch |
| His own PAN card | The department's own spelling of his name | Very persuasive, because it is the same department's record |
| A notarised affidavit by him | That both versions mean one person | Supporting only; attach it, do not depend on it |
| Your school or board certificate | What the school recorded when you were admitted | Useful, but if it carries the wrong version it argues against you |
Two PAN Rules That Save You Money and Trouble
Your PAN number never changes
A correction reissues the same number. That matters more than it sounds: every bank account, every employer record, every investment and every return already tied to that number stays tied to it. Nothing you have linked has to be linked again.
So there is no reason to delay a correction out of fear that your number will move. It will not.
Never apply for a second PAN
Some people, told that a correction takes time, simply apply afresh with the right details. That leaves you holding more than one PAN, which attracts a penalty of Rs 10,000 under section 272B of the Income-tax Act, and the second number then has to be surrendered.
A correction costs a little over a hundred rupees. The shortcut costs a hundred times that and a lot of letters.
When Aadhaar and PAN Will Not Link Because of a Name
Most people reach this page not because they were reading their PAN card but because something refused to go through. A linking failure, a bank asking for a fresh KYC, a portal rejecting a return. It is worth being precise about what is actually mismatching.
Usually it is your own name, not his
Linking compares your name, date of birth and gender against the Aadhaar record. A father's name difference is not normally what breaks a link, so check which field is actually failing before paying for the wrong correction.
Aadhaar has no father's name field
So a father's name can never be matched between the two documents in the first place. Any advice telling you to make Aadhaar's father's name match PAN is describing a field that does not exist on an Aadhaar card, which carries at most a care of line.
Where his name does block things
Bank KYC and employment or provident fund files, school and board records, caste and residence certificates, and any form that asks for a parent's name. Those are the places worth fixing, and PAN is the one among them that prints it.
Where a Gazette Fits in a PAN Father's Name Correction
For a spelling correction supported by your father's own documents, nowhere. The gazette enters only in the two situations below, and both post to the same office, because no district in Jharkhand has a gazette counter: the Department of Publication, Civil Lines, Delhi 110054, publishing in Part IV of the Gazette of India, digital only since 1 October 2015 with a free PDF.
His name genuinely changed
Not a misprint but a different name, which he took. Then the gazette is his instrument and the PAN correction follows it as the supporting document. The route is on the gazette name change page.
No document anywhere carries the correct spelling
Where his records all repeat the wrong version, there is nothing to prove a correction against. A public notice quoting the wrong spelling exactly as printed becomes the proof, and one notice can name several documents at once.
Central Gazette Name Change Process From Jharkhand, Step by Step, Before the PAN Father's Name Update
This section is for the case named just above, where the father's own name genuinely changed, or where no document at all carries the correct spelling. A PAN correction form only copies what another record already says, so when no record says the right thing, a Gazette notice is what creates that record. Where the PAN line is simply a typing mistake and the school certificate is already right, skip this section and use the correction form.
There is no gazette counter in any Jharkhand district, so the file goes to the Department of Publication, Civil Lines, Delhi 110054, and the notice publishes in Part IV of the Gazette of India. Since July 2025 the Jharkhand Government Press has stopped personal name change notifications, as reported, so this is the route in any case.
The Eight Steps of a Central Gazette Name Change File Sent From Jharkhand
Fix the final spelling before anything else
Write the name you want, letter by letter, and then use exactly that spelling in every paper of the file. The Gazette publishes what is written, not what was meant. A single wrong letter means a corrigendum later, which is a second fee and a second wait.
Fill the correct proforma
The Department carries more than one proforma. An adult publishing his own notice signs his own proforma. A notice for a child is published by the parent or guardian on a different one. Read the heading of the form before you fill a single line.
Swear the affidavit in the right words
A notary affidavit on Rs 100 non-judicial stamp paper carrying the old name, the new name, the father's name, the address and the good faith clause. Where the papers only carry a misprint, the affidavit says the correct name is such and such, it does not swear a change that never happened.
Publish in two newspapers
One notice in a Hindi paper and one in an English paper, carrying the old name, the new name, the father's name and the address. Keep the original printed cuttings with the paper's name and date visible on them. A photocopy or a PDF taken from the paper's website is not accepted.
Pay only through BharatKosh
The Government fee goes through BharatKosh, the Non Tax Receipt Portal, and nowhere else. Print the e-receipt and keep it. Nobody at the Department takes cash, and no agent can pay this on some other portal.
Attach identity and address proof
Self-attested copies, with the address matching the affidavit word for word. Where the file is about a father's name, the paper that proves his spelling goes in too, usually his Aadhaar or his own Class 10 certificate.
Send the complete set together
The file goes as one set by post or courier to Civil Lines. A file short of one paper is not held back for that paper, it is returned. Keep a photocopy of everything you post and keep the courier receipt.
Read the notice, then download the copy
When it publishes, check it before using it anywhere. If it is right, download the e-Gazette copy of that Part IV issue and keep it permanently. If a letter is wrong, apply for a corrigendum at once, because offices will start copying the error.
The Five Papers in the Gazette File, and What Is Checked in Each
| The paper | What is checked in it, clause by clause |
|---|---|
| 1. The proforma | That it is the right proforma for the applicant; the old name and the new name spelt exactly as in every other paper; the father's name; the full address with pin code; the applicant's own signature |
| 2. The affidavit | The old name and the new name; the father's name; the address matching the ID; the reason and the good faith clause; the notary's stamp, register number and date; Rs 100 non-judicial stamp paper |
| 3. The two newspaper cuttings | Originals, one Hindi and one English; the paper's name and date of publication visible on the cutting itself; the old name, new name, father's name and address in the printed text; the same spelling as the proforma |
| 4. Identity and address proof | Self-attested; the address the same as in the affidavit; and the document that carries the spelling being relied on, so the Department can see the two names side by side |
| 5. The BharatKosh e-receipt | That the payment reached the Department of Publication; the transaction reference legible; the amount matching the fee on the day of payment; the name on the payment matching the applicant |
With the notice in hand the PAN correction is the ordinary one described above: tick the father's name box, attach the gazette copy with the proof of identity and address, and check the printed line when the card arrives. The PAN number never changes through any of this. A second PAN is not the answer and carries a penalty of Rs 10,000 under section 272B. The proforma format page shows each line of the form, and the PAN name change page covers a change in the holder's own name.
What a PAN Father's Name Correction Costs
| Item | Cost | Note |
|---|---|---|
| PAN correction, Indian address | Commonly around Rs 110, and a little less for the electronic card only | Revised from time to time; the portal shows the current figure before you pay |
| PAN correction, foreign address | Commonly around Rs 1,020 | Dispatch outside India accounts for most of the difference |
| Father's affidavit, where you want one in the file | Commonly Rs 100 to Rs 500 | Stamp paper and notary; supporting only |
| Correcting his own records first, where they conflict | Each authority's own fee | Do this before the PAN correction, not after |
| Public notice, only where no record carries the right spelling | Commonly Rs 1,350 in Government fee, revised each financial year, non-refundable | BharatKosh only; one notice can cover several documents |
| Second PAN, if somebody applied for one | Penalty of Rs 10,000 under section 272B | Plus the work of surrendering it; never take this route |
| Time | Days to a few weeks for the corrected card | Track it on the fifteen-digit acknowledgement number |
| Our charge | Quoted per case; the route check is free | Full bill on the cost page |
PAN Father's Name Myths and Mistakes

The mistakes
- Filling the form without ticking the box beside the field, so nothing is treated as a correction.

- Using your own certificate as proof when his papers are what the department reads.
- Paying for a PAN correction when the linking failure was actually a date of birth difference.
- Missing the single-parent option when it applied to your family.
