Aadhaar Name in Hindi and English Not Matching in Jharkhand: How to Fix It
Your Aadhaar card prints your name twice: once in English and once in a local language, which for most people in Jharkhand is Hindi. The two lines are often typed separately, and they do not always agree. The English line may say Kumar while the Hindi line reads differently, or a surname may be spelt one way in each. UIDAI itself warns that where an operator does not know the chosen language well, the operator "shall intimate the same to the applicant and inform him that applicant shall be responsible for transliteration errors." The fix is at an Aadhaar enrolment centre, because UIDAI says "At present you can not update your local language through online portal." No Gazette notice is needed for this, and none can set a Hindi spelling. We publish Gazette notices, and we say this first.
Five points, in the order you will need them. First, find which line is wrong: compare the English line with your Class 10 certificate, and the Hindi line with any record that prints your name in Hindi. Second, the Hindi line cannot be fixed online; UIDAI says "At present you can not update your local language through online portal." Third, go to an Aadhaar enrolment centre; UIDAI says an update of regional language "is possible by visiting Aadhaar enrolment centre having this facility." Fourth, read both lines on the operator's screen before you give your fingerprint, because UIDAI puts transliteration errors on the applicant when the operator warns you. Fifth, no Gazette notice is needed; a spelling in Hindi is not a change of name. We publish Gazette notices, and we say this plainly.
Why Your Aadhaar Name Is Printed in Hindi and English
Aadhaar records your details in English and in a local language you choose at enrolment. UIDAI's own update page notes that "the Aadhaar number holder may want to change the local language of enrolment to another that he/she prefers." In Jharkhand, that local language is usually Hindi. The Hindi line is often a transliteration, typed or converted by the operator, and that is where the two lines drift apart.
| Kind of difference | Example of the pattern |
|---|---|
| A long or short vowel | A name ending in a short sound in one line and a long one in the other |
| A surname spelt by sound | A clan or family name written the way the operator heard it |
| A missing part | A middle name in English but not in Hindi |
| A different local language | The local line in a language you did not expect |
Which Aadhaar Name Line Is Wrong: English, Hindi, or Both
Before you go to a centre, decide which line needs fixing. This is our method, not a UIDAI rule, but it stops you spending an update on the wrong line.
| Compare | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| English line against your Class 10 certificate | If they differ, the English line needs fixing. See JAC marksheet and Aadhaar |
| Hindi line against a record that prints your name in Hindi | If they differ, the Hindi line needs fixing |
| English line against PAN | A difference can block PAN linking. See PAN and Aadhaar mismatch |
| Both lines wrong | Fix both in the same visit |
How to Correct the Hindi Name on Aadhaar at an Enrolment Centre in Jharkhand
UIDAI says an update of regional language "is possible by visiting Aadhaar enrolment centre having this facility." Its guidance to operators is to log in with the desired regional language and "Update the demographic details (name, address) by submitting Proof of Identity (POI) and Proof of Address (POA) documents."
| What to do | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Ask first whether the centre has the facility | UIDAI says the centre must be one "having this facility" |
| Carry proof of identity | UIDAI names POI for a name update |
| Write your name in Hindi on paper | Show the operator exactly the spelling you want |
| Ask whether the operator knows Hindi well | If not, UIDAI says errors fall on you |
| Read both lines on the screen | Before you give your fingerprint |
Aadhaar Name Update Limit and the Hindi Name Line
UIDAI allows two name updates in a lifetime. We could not confirm whether correcting only the Hindi line counts as one of the two. So treat every name visit as if it might count.
| Your situation | What usually helps |
|---|---|
| Only the Hindi line is wrong | Ask the operator whether it will count as a name update, before you submit |
| Both lines need work | Fix both in one visit |
| You also plan a name change | Do the change and the Hindi correction together |
| Both updates already used | A further update needs UIDAI's exception route; see Aadhaar name change |
Does an Aadhaar Hindi Name Mismatch Need a Gazette Notice?
No. A Hindi spelling that differs from the English line is a transliteration, not a change of name. UIDAI's route is a demographic update at a centre with proof of identity. A Gazette notice is not part of that route.
| Situation | What usually applies |
|---|---|
| Hindi line spelt differently | Centre update. No Gazette |
| English line has a slip | Centre update with a document showing the right spelling. No Gazette |
| Local language set wrongly | Centre update. No Gazette |
| You genuinely changed your name | That is a change of name, where a Gazette can be proof |

Central Gazette Process for a Name From Jharkhand, and and Why an Aadhaar Hindi Spelling Does Not Need It
No district in Jharkhand has a gazette counter, so a genuine file goes from Ranchi, Jamshedpur, Dhanbad, Bokaro, Hazaribagh, Deoghar or anywhere else in the state to the Department of Publication, Civil Lines, Delhi 110054, and the notice publishes in Part IV of the Gazette of India. As reported in July 2025 the Finance Department stopped personal name change notifications from the Jharkhand Government Press with immediate effect, so there is no state alternative to fall back on.
The Eight Steps of a Name File Sent From Jharkhand
Settle the final name first
Letter by letter, with the spacing you want, and then use exactly that everywhere, Aadhaar included. A corrigendum after publication is a second fee and a second wait.
Pick the category, then its proforma
A genuine change of name is change of Name Adult or Major. A wrongly typed spelling is the public notice for a wrongly written name. Twelve categories exist and only one is yours.
Type the proforma in duplicate
Two originals with two witnesses giving signature, full name, address and mobile number on both copies. A change of name is signed in the old name; a public notice is signed in your own name.
Fill the employment field if it is a change of name
The adult proforma asks for the post of the applicant and the office or company name. A student or a homemaker should still complete it rather than leaving it blank, because a blank field brings the file back.
Publish and keep the original paper
One of the daily local leading newspapers, carrying both names in full, the father or husband name and the residential address. The whole original paper goes in the file, not a cutting.
Pay only through BharatKosh
The Non Tax Receipt Portal and nowhere else since October 2018. Select the Department of Publication by name, read the amount the portal shows on the day, pay in your own name and print the e-receipt.
Check every date, then post it yourself
Nothing in the file older than one year. Personally or by post or courier only, never through an agent or advocate. Photocopy everything first, because nothing sent in comes back.
The Five Papers in the File, and What Is Checked in Each
| The paper | What is checked in it, clause by clause |
|---|---|
| 1. The proforma, in duplicate | That it is the right category format; the existing full name exactly as your documents carry it; the new full name exactly as settled; the father or husband name; the full address with pin code; the post and office or company name where it is a change of name; the signature in the right name for the category; two witnesses complete with signature, full name, address and mobile number |
| 2. The affidavit or undertaking | The same names and address as the proforma, word for word, with wording matching the category. On Rs 100 non-judicial stamp paper as our safe default |
| 3. The original newspaper | The original paper, not a cutting; the paper name and date of publication visible; both names carried; the father or husband name and residential address; dated within the last year |
| 4. Photographs, identity proof and any category paper | Two self attested passport photographs; self attested identity and address proof matching the proforma address; both witnesses proofs; and, in a public notice file, the attested photocopy of the connected document carrying the error |
| 5. The CD, its certificate and the BharatKosh receipt | MS Word, without the witness portion, with the name typed in place of the signature; the certificate that the hard copy and the soft copy are the same; the forwarding letter to the Controller of Publication with a telephone number and email; the e-receipt |
The posting detail is on the sending the file to Delhi page, the change of name wording on the proforma format page and the public notice wording on the public notice proforma page, the charge by category on the fee and undertaking page, the reasons files come back on the rejection reasons page, and the download on the download page.
What Fixing an Aadhaar Hindi Name Mismatch Costs
This is one of the cheapest fixes on our site. There is no Gazette cost, because no Gazette notice is needed. The main cost is the centre's demographic update charge and your time.
| Item | What we can and cannot tell you |
|---|---|
| Demographic update at a centre | Charged by UIDAI at the centre. We print no figure; the centre must give a receipt |
| Online update | Not available for the local language line, as UIDAI says |
| Gazette notice | Not needed for a Hindi and English mismatch |
| Affidavit | Not named by UIDAI for this; proof of identity is |
| A wasted update | The real cost: one of two lifetime name updates, if it counts |
| What we charge | Quoted on the call. For telling you which line is wrong, nothing |
Myths About the Aadhaar Hindi Name Line

| The operator is responsible for errors | If warned, "applicant shall be responsible for transliteration errors" |
| The Hindi line does not matter | It can matter where records are read in Hindi |
| Fix the English line first, Hindi later | Fix both in one visit |
| Name updates are unlimited | UIDAI allows two in a lifetime |
