Name Change for Numerology in Jharkhand: Gazette, Aadhaar and the Records That Must Follow
An extra "a", a doubled "t", an "h" dropped from the middle. To a numerologist it is a small adjustment. To every Government office it is a new name. The Department of Publication's form for an adult change of name reads "I hitherto known as (Old Name)... have changed my name and shall hereafter be known as (New Name)", and that is exactly what a numerology spelling is: a name you did not have before. The guidelines we read ask for no reason for the change, so you do not have to explain numerology to anybody. What matters far more is what comes after. UIDAI allows a name to be updated in Aadhaar only twice, your old certificates will keep the old spelling, and a numerology name used in some records and not others creates the very mismatch that stops a job, a loan or a passport. This page shows how to do it once, properly.
Five points, in the order you will need them. First, a numerology spelling is a change of name, not a correction. A correction fixes a spelling that was wrongly written; adding or dropping a letter by choice gives you a name you never had. So it goes in the change of name of an adult category of the Gazette of India, Part IV, where the form says you "have changed my name and shall hereafter be known as" the new name, "signed by the individual in his/her old name". Second, you do not have to give numerology as a reason. The Department's guidelines we read do not ask for a reason at all. Third, settle the spelling before you touch Aadhaar. UIDAI allows a name to be updated twice, and it lists a Gazette notification as proof for a change in first name or full name. Fourth, your old certificates will not change. Boards and universities correct errors against their own records; a new spelling chosen later is usually linked to them through the Gazette notice, not printed on them. Fifth, use the new spelling everywhere or nowhere. A name in the new spelling on Aadhaar and in the old one on PAN, a passport or a bank account is a mismatch, and it is the mismatch, not the numerology, that causes trouble. The Department's guidelines print Rs 1,100 for an adult change of name for the financial year 2016 to 2017; it is revised each year, and BharatKosh shows the amount on the day.
Is a Numerology Spelling a Name Correction or a Change of Name
People often call it a "spelling correction". It is not, and the difference decides which form you fill. A correction fixes a name that was written wrongly, such as a clerk typing Sunita as Sunitha. A numerology spelling is a name you choose, such as Sunita becoming Sunitaa. You never had that name before, so you are changing your name.
The Department of Publication's form for this reads: "I hitherto known as (Old Name) Son/daughter/Wife/ of (Father/Husband's name)... have changed my name and shall hereafter be known as (New Name)." That sentence fits a numerology spelling exactly. The public notice for a wrongly written name, the other form people reach for, is for an error, and filing a chosen spelling on it claims a mistake that never happened.
| The change | What it is |
|---|---|
| Adding a letter: Rahul to Raahul, Neha to Nehaa | Change of name. A new name by choice |
| Doubling a letter: Amit to Ammit, Priya to Priyya | Change of name |
| Dropping a letter: Shweta to Sweta | Change of name, if Shweta was always the right spelling |
| Adding or removing a middle name or initial for numerology | Change of name. See short name against full name |
| A clerk typed your name wrongly in one record | A correction, not numerology. See name spelling correction |
Do You Have to Give Numerology as the Reason for a Gazette Name Change
No. The Department of Publication's guidelines for an adult change of name, as we read them, do not ask for a reason. The form declares only the old name, the father's or husband's name, the address, the new name, and optionally "employed as (Post of the applicant) in the (Office/Company's name)". There is no line that asks why.
Some websites say the affidavit must state a "reason for name change". That is not in the guidelines we read. You may state a reason if you wish, but you do not have to write "numerology" or "astrology" anywhere, and many people prefer not to, because the notice is public and permanent.
| On the form | What the Department asks |
|---|---|
| Old name | Exactly as your records carry it |
| Father's or husband's name, and address | As in the proforma specimen |
| New name | Letter by letter, the numerology spelling you have settled |
| Signature | "signed by the individual in his/her old name" |
| Two witnesses | On the proforma, in duplicate |
| Reason for the change | Not asked for in the guidelines we read |
Settle the Numerology Spelling Before You Update Aadhaar
Numerologists sometimes suggest one spelling, and then a second consultation suggests another. Aadhaar will not let you keep trying. UIDAI allows a name to be updated twice, and a further change after that is an exception process, not a routine update. See the Aadhaar update limit.
The good news is that the Gazette notice is exactly the proof Aadhaar needs. UIDAI's published list of supporting documents lists a Gazette notification for a change in first name or change in full name. So once the notice is out, Aadhaar is the first record to update, and the rest follow it.
| The question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Is this spelling final? | Every later change spends one of your two Aadhaar name updates |
| Is it spelt the same in the newspaper, the proforma and the affidavit? | The Gazette notice prints what you send. A different letter in one paper is a corrigendum later |
| Have you used an Aadhaar name update before? | If yes, this may be your last one. Plan accordingly |
| Is your Aadhaar address the one on the Gazette form? | The Gazette address should match the Aadhaar address |
| Does the new spelling fit the PAN and passport fields? | Check how it reads in capital letters with no spaces, because that is how most records print it |
What Happens to Your Old School and College Certificates After a Numerology Name Change
This is the part numerology advice usually leaves out. Your Class 10 and Class 12 certificates, and your degree, will usually keep the old spelling. Boards correct errors against their own records. A spelling you chose years after the certificate was issued is not an error in that record.
For CBSE, the rule we have verified is strict: a change of name is considered only where admitted by a Court and notified in the Gazette before publication of the result. After the result, a chosen new spelling is not printed onto the certificate. JAC corrects its certificates against the school's admission register, so a spelling that was never in that register is not a JAC correction either. See JAC correction against Gazette.
| The record | What usually happens |
|---|---|
| JAC or Bihar Board certificates | Keep the old name. The Gazette notice links old to new |
| CBSE certificates | Changed only if a Court admitted it and the Gazette notice came before the result |
| University degree | Varies by university. A linking letter is the realistic outcome. See degree name correction |
| Aadhaar, PAN, bank, passport | Can be updated to the new name with the Gazette notice |
| A job application or recruitment verification | You will show old certificates and a new ID. Carry the Gazette notice every time. See before JSSC or JPSC verification |
Using a Numerology Name in Some Documents Only: Why It Causes Trouble
The commonest numerology problem we see is not the Gazette. It is a person who started using the new spelling on some records without any notice at all. A new spelling on a visiting card and a bank account, the old one on Aadhaar and PAN, and a third mix on a property paper. Every office then sees two names, and nothing that links them.
A name is not "changed" because you started using it. It is changed when there is a record that says so, and for an adult that is the Gazette notice. Until then, the old spelling is the one to use everywhere.
| Where it shows up | What goes wrong |
|---|---|
| PAN and Aadhaar | Different names stop the two from linking. See PAN and Aadhaar name mismatch |
| Bank account | KYC reads the name on your identity document. See bank records |
| Passport | A name change is a reissue with a new passport number. See new passport number after name change |
| Property and land records | A sale or mutation in one spelling and an identity in another is questioned at the office |
| Signature | Signing the new spelling before the notice gives you two signatures and no proof that both are yours |
How to Change Your Name for Numerology in Jharkhand, Step by Step
Settle the spelling, and keep it
Letter by letter. Write it in capitals as a PAN card would, and be sure you will not change it again.
Check it is a change, not a correction
A chosen spelling is a change of name. Fix any genuine typing error separately first.
Check your Aadhaar name updates
UIDAI allows two. Know how many you have used.
Check your exam and job dates
If a recruitment form is due soon, apply in your current name and change after.
Make the affidavit
Old name, new name, father's or husband's name and address. No reason is required.
Publish in one daily local leading newspaper
Both names in full, with the father's or husband's name and address. Keep the whole original paper.
Prepare the change of name file
Proforma in duplicate, signed in the old name, two witnesses, and pay only through BharatKosh.
Send it and check the notice
Post or courier to Delhi yourself. Read every letter the day it publishes.
Update Aadhaar first
With the Gazette notification as proof. Then PAN, bank, passport and the rest.
Carry the notice with your old certificates
Your certificates keep the old spelling. The Gazette notice is the link between them and your new ID.
Central Gazette Process for a Name From Jharkhand, and Where a Numerology Name Fits
No district in Jharkhand has a gazette counter, so a genuine file goes from Ranchi, Jamshedpur, Dhanbad, Bokaro, Hazaribagh, Deoghar or anywhere else in the state to the Department of Publication, Civil Lines, Delhi 110054, and the notice publishes in Part IV of the Gazette of India. As reported in July 2025 the Finance Department stopped personal name change notifications from the Jharkhand Government Press with immediate effect, so there is no state alternative to fall back on.
The Eight Steps of a Name File Sent From Jharkhand
Settle the final name first
Letter by letter, with the spacing you want, and then use exactly that everywhere, Aadhaar included. A corrigendum after publication is a second fee and a second wait.
Pick the category, then its proforma
A genuine change of name is change of Name Adult or Major. A wrongly typed spelling is the public notice for a wrongly written name. Twelve categories exist and only one is yours.
Type the proforma in duplicate
Two originals with two witnesses giving signature, full name, address and mobile number on both copies. A change of name is signed in the old name; a public notice is signed in your own name.
Fill the employment field if it is a change of name
The adult proforma asks for the post of the applicant and the office or company name. A student or a homemaker should still complete it rather than leaving it blank, because a blank field brings the file back.
Publish and keep the original paper
One of the daily local leading newspapers, carrying both names in full, the father or husband name and the residential address. The whole original paper goes in the file, not a cutting.
Pay only through BharatKosh
The Non Tax Receipt Portal and nowhere else since October 2018. Select the Department of Publication by name, read the amount the portal shows on the day, pay in your own name and print the e-receipt.
Check every date, then post it yourself
Nothing in the file older than one year. Personally or by post or courier only, never through an agent or advocate. Photocopy everything first, because nothing sent in comes back.
Read the notice, then update in the right order
Check every word the day it publishes, download the e-Gazette copy, and then update the Aadhaar first, because the system leverages it for unique identification, and let the PAN, the bank account and any investment records follow after it in that order. Carry the notice with your old certificates, because they will keep the old spelling.
The Five Papers in the File, and What Is Checked in Each
| The paper | What is checked in it, clause by clause |
|---|---|
| 1. The proforma, in duplicate | That it is the right category format; the existing full name exactly as your documents carry it; the new full name exactly as settled; the father or husband name; the full address with pin code; the post and office or company name where it is a change of name; the signature in the right name for the category; two witnesses complete with signature, full name, address and mobile number |
| 2. The affidavit or undertaking | The same names and address as the proforma, word for word, with wording matching the category. On Rs 100 non-judicial stamp paper as our safe default |
| 3. The original newspaper | The original paper, not a cutting; the paper name and date of publication visible; both names carried; the father or husband name and residential address; dated within the last year |
| 4. Photographs, identity proof and any category paper | Two self attested passport photographs; self attested identity and address proof matching the proforma address; both witnesses proofs; and, in a public notice file, the attested photocopy of the connected document carrying the error |
| 5. The CD, its certificate and the BharatKosh receipt | MS Word, without the witness portion, with the name typed in place of the signature; the certificate that the hard copy and the soft copy are the same; the forwarding letter to the Controller of Publication with a telephone number and email; the e-receipt |
The posting detail is on the sending the file to Delhi page, the change of name wording on the proforma format page and the public notice wording on the public notice proforma page, the charge by category on the fee and undertaking page, the reasons files come back on the rejection reasons page, and the download on the download page.
Cost of a Numerology Name Change Through the Gazette in Jharkhand
The Gazette charge is the same as for any adult change of name, because that is what a numerology spelling is. The figure printed in the Department's guidelines is for the financial year 2016 to 2017 and is revised each year. What BharatKosh shows on the payment screen the day you pay is the figure that counts.
| Item | What we can and cannot tell you |
|---|---|
| Gazette charge, adult change of name | Printed as Rs 1,100 for 2016 to 2017. Revised each financial year, never refunded |
| Indian living abroad | Printed as Rs 3,500 for the same year |
| Affidavit | On Rs 100 non-judicial stamp paper as our safe default |
| Newspaper advertisement | Charged by the paper. We print no figure |
| Aadhaar, PAN and other updates afterwards | Charged by each office. See Aadhaar name change and PAN name change |
| A second notice if you change the spelling again | The whole cost again, plus one more Aadhaar name update |
| What we charge | Quoted on the call. If you are not sure of the spelling yet, we will tell you to wait and charge nothing |
