Signature Change After Name Change in Jharkhand: Bank, PAN, Shares and Demat
Once your new name is published, you will probably want to sign in it. But a signature is not a name, and no office changes it just because your name changed. Each record holds its own specimen signature, and each has its own way of replacing it. The one to change first is your bank, because other offices check your signature against the bank's record. For shares held through a registrar, SEBI's own Form ISR-2 is a "Confirmation of Signature of securities holder by the Banker", confirming the signature "as recorded with the Bank", sent with an "Original cancelled cheque". For PAN, Protean's instructions say "Individuals issued a PAN card with incorrect/unclear photograph/signature should tick the box on the left margin". And until your Gazette notice is out, the Department of Publication's own form is "signed by the individual in his/her old name". This page puts it all in order.
Five points, in the order you will need them. First, keep signing in the old name until the Gazette notice is out. The Department of Publication's change of name form is "signed by the individual in his/her old name", and until publication the old name is still your legal name. Second, treat the signature as a separate request from the name. Changing the name in a record does not change the specimen signature it holds, and mixing both into one letter slows both down. Third, change the bank first. Other offices check your signature against the bank. For physical shares and securities with a registrar, SEBI's forms ask for "Banker's attestation of the signature of the holder(s) as per Form ISR – 2" and an "Original cancelled cheque", and SEBI says the registrar "shall not insist on Affidavits or Attestation / Notarization or indemnity" for these updates. For a minor difference, the registrar "shall intimate the holder at the existing address, seeking objection, if any, within 15 days." Fourth, for PAN, tick the signature box. Protean's instructions say a person with a PAN card showing an "incorrect/unclear photograph/signature should tick the box on the left margin", and enclose the original PAN card. Fifth, you do not need a Gazette notice for a signature. Every Gazette category is about names and related matters, not signatures. We could not find a Reserve Bank rule prescribing how a bank records a new signature, so each bank uses its own form; ask at your branch.
A Signature Is Not a Name: Why Changing Your Name Does Not Change Your Signature
When a bank updates your name, it changes the name field. It does not throw away the specimen signature it already holds. The same is true of a share registrar, a depository participant and the PAN database. Each keeps its own copy of how you sign, and each compares your next signature with that copy.
So after a name change there are really two jobs: the name, which the Gazette notice or marriage certificate proves, and the signature, which only you can prove, usually in person or through your bank.
| Point | Name change | Signature change |
|---|---|---|
| What proves it | Gazette notice, marriage certificate or similar | You, and usually your bank |
| Is a Gazette notice needed | Often, for a genuine change | No. No Gazette category covers signatures |
| Does one change the other | No | No |
| Must you do it | To use the new name, yes | We found no rule that forces it, but a signature that does not match the record causes rejections |
| One letter for both? | Better not. A mixed request is the slowest kind. See demat and mutual fund name change | |
Which Record to Change First After a Name Change: Why the Bank Comes First for Signature
For the name, the usual order is Aadhaar first, then PAN, then banks and the rest. For the signature, the bank matters most, because it is the record other offices lean on.
SEBI's Form ISR-2 shows this plainly. It is titled "Confirmation of Signature of securities holder by the Banker", and the bank confirms your signature "as recorded with the Bank." So if your bank still holds your old signature, the banker can only confirm the old one. Change the bank's specimen first, and the rest can follow it.
| Order | Record | What changes |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Aadhaar | Name only. Aadhaar holds no signature |
| 2 | PAN | Name, and the signature if you tick the box |
| 3 | Bank | Name, and a new specimen signature. The anchor for everything after it |
| 4 | Shares with a registrar | Signature through Form ISR-2 from the bank, with a cancelled cheque |
| 5 | Demat and mutual funds | Through your depository participant's own form |
| 6 | Insurance, EPFO and the rest | Each through its own form |
How to Change Your Signature in a Bank Account After a Name Change
Here we have to be plain about what we could and could not find. We could not find a Reserve Bank rule that says how a bank must record a new signature. Each bank uses its own form, usually a request for change of signature with a fresh specimen signature card, signed at the branch in front of an officer. Ask your branch for its form rather than relying on one printed on a website.
What is settled is the name side. The Reserve Bank's KYC rule treats your old identity document as valid in the new name when it is supported by a State Government marriage certificate or a Gazette notification. See bank not accepting the Gazette. So do the name and the signature at the same visit, but on separate forms.
| What to take | Why |
|---|---|
| Your passbook or a statement | Shows the name and account the bank holds |
| Your Gazette notice or marriage certificate | Proof of the name change, for the name form |
| An officially valid identity document | For KYC. A PAN card is not on the Reserve Bank's list of such documents |
| Yourself, in person | A new specimen signature is usually signed in front of a bank officer |
| The bank's own change of signature form | Ask at the branch. We print no format, because each bank has its own |
Signature Change for Shares With a Registrar: Form ISR-1 and Form ISR-2
If you hold shares or other securities through a company's registrar and share transfer agent, SEBI's own forms set the rules, and they are clearer than most. SEBI's Form ISR-1 asks, for a signature update, for "Banker's attestation of the signature of the holder(s) as per Form ISR – 2" and an "Original cancelled cheque".
Form ISR-2 is issued under SEBI's circular of 16 March 2023. It is a "Confirmation of Signature of securities holder by the Banker". The bank fills in the account details, attaches your photograph, confirms your signature "as recorded with the Bank", and adds its seal and the manager's name, employee code, email and date.
| The point | In SEBI's words |
|---|---|
| For a signature update | "Banker's attestation of the signature of the holder(s) as per Form ISR – 2" and "Original cancelled cheque" |
| For a minor signature difference | The registrar "shall intimate the holder at the existing address, seeking objection, if any, within 15 days" |
| For a name difference | Furnish one document "explaining the difference in names", such as Aadhaar, a valid passport, a driving licence, a PAN card with photograph, a marriage certificate or a divorce decree |
| What the registrar cannot demand | "RTA shall not insist on Affidavits or Attestation / Notarization or indemnity" for updating PAN, KYC details and nomination |
| Who signs Form ISR-2 | Your bank manager, with the bank's seal |
How to Change the Signature on Your PAN Card After a Name Change
A PAN card prints your signature, so an old signature on a new-name PAN card is a common sight. Protean, one of the two PAN service providers, covers it in its instructions for the change request form. "Individuals issued a PAN card with incorrect/unclear photograph/signature should tick the box on the left margin." The applicant must enclose "The original PAN card with wrong photograph / signature".
For the name itself, Protean lists the proof. For a married woman, "marriage certificate, marriage invitation card, publication of 'name-change' in gazette, copy of passport showing husband's name". For other individuals, "publication of 'name-change' in gazette". And it warns that "Applications not signed in the given manner and in the space provided are liable to be rejected."
| On the PAN change request | What to do |
|---|---|
| The name field | Tick it, and give the new name exactly as the proof shows |
| The signature box on the left margin | Tick it if you want the new signature printed |
| Your new signature | "Do provide the signature within the box", and "Do not sign across the box" |
| Proof of name change | Gazette publication, or the marriage documents Protean lists |
| The original PAN card | Enclose it, as Protean asks when the photograph or signature is wrong |
How to Change Your Signature After a Name Change in Jharkhand, Step by Step
Keep signing in the old name until the notice is out
The Gazette form itself is "signed by the individual in his/her old name".
Settle your new signature and practise it
One signature, the same every time. Offices compare it stroke by stroke.
Update Aadhaar with the new name
Aadhaar holds no signature, so this is the name only.
Update PAN, ticking both name and signature
Enclose the original card, and sign within the box.
Go to your bank in person
Name form and change of signature form separately, with the Gazette notice or marriage certificate.
Get the date the new specimen is on the system
Do not issue cheques in the new signature before that date.
Ask the bank for Form ISR-2 if you hold shares with a registrar
The banker confirms the signature "as recorded with the Bank".
Send Form ISR-1, ISR-2 and a cancelled cheque to the registrar
No affidavit or notarisation can be insisted on.
Update demat and mutual funds through your participant
On its own form, not Form ISR-1.
Update insurance, EPFO and the rest
Each through its own form. Keep copies of every acknowledgement.
Central Gazette Process for a Name From Jharkhand, and Where a Signature Change Fits
No district in Jharkhand has a gazette counter, so a genuine file goes from Ranchi, Jamshedpur, Dhanbad, Bokaro, Hazaribagh, Deoghar or anywhere else in the state to the Department of Publication, Civil Lines, Delhi 110054, and the notice publishes in Part IV of the Gazette of India. As reported in July 2025 the Finance Department stopped personal name change notifications from the Jharkhand Government Press with immediate effect, so there is no state alternative to fall back on.
The Eight Steps of a Name File Sent From Jharkhand
Settle the final name first
Letter by letter, with the spacing you want, and then use exactly that everywhere, Aadhaar included. A corrigendum after publication is a second fee and a second wait.
Pick the category, then its proforma
A genuine change of name is change of Name Adult or Major. A wrongly typed spelling is the public notice for a wrongly written name. Twelve categories exist and only one is yours.
Type the proforma in duplicate
Two originals with two witnesses giving signature, full name, address and mobile number on both copies. A change of name is signed in the old name; a public notice is signed in your own name.
Fill the employment field if it is a change of name
The adult proforma asks for the post of the applicant and the office or company name. A student or a homemaker should still complete it rather than leaving it blank, because a blank field brings the file back.
Publish and keep the original paper
One of the daily local leading newspapers, carrying both names in full, the father or husband name and the residential address. The whole original paper goes in the file, not a cutting.
Pay only through BharatKosh
The Non Tax Receipt Portal and nowhere else since October 2018. Select the Department of Publication by name, read the amount the portal shows on the day, pay in your own name and print the e-receipt.
Check every date, then post it yourself
Nothing in the file older than one year. Personally or by post or courier only, never through an agent or advocate. Photocopy everything first, because nothing sent in comes back.
Read the notice, then update in the right order
Check every word the day it publishes, download the e-Gazette copy, and then update the Aadhaar first, because the system leverages it for unique identification, and let the PAN, the bank account and any investment records follow after it in that order. Change your signature at the bank first, because other offices check against it.
The Five Papers in the File, and What Is Checked in Each
| The paper | What is checked in it, clause by clause |
|---|---|
| 1. The proforma, in duplicate | That it is the right category format; the existing full name exactly as your documents carry it; the new full name exactly as settled; the father or husband name; the full address with pin code; the post and office or company name where it is a change of name; the signature in the right name for the category; two witnesses complete with signature, full name, address and mobile number |
| 2. The affidavit or undertaking | The same names and address as the proforma, word for word, with wording matching the category. On Rs 100 non-judicial stamp paper as our safe default |
| 3. The original newspaper | The original paper, not a cutting; the paper name and date of publication visible; both names carried; the father or husband name and residential address; dated within the last year |
| 4. Photographs, identity proof and any category paper | Two self attested passport photographs; self attested identity and address proof matching the proforma address; both witnesses proofs; and, in a public notice file, the attested photocopy of the connected document carrying the error |
| 5. The CD, its certificate and the BharatKosh receipt | MS Word, without the witness portion, with the name typed in place of the signature; the certificate that the hard copy and the soft copy are the same; the forwarding letter to the Controller of Publication with a telephone number and email; the e-receipt |
The posting detail is on the sending the file to Delhi page, the change of name wording on the proforma format page and the public notice wording on the public notice proforma page, the charge by category on the fee and undertaking page, the reasons files come back on the rejection reasons page, and the download on the download page.
What a Signature Change After Name Change Costs
A signature change should cost very little. Most of what we can tell you is what is not charged, and where an office sets its own charge, we say so rather than guess.
| Item | What we can and cannot tell you |
|---|---|
| A Gazette notice for a signature | Not needed. No Gazette category covers a signature |
| Bank change of signature | Set by each bank. We print no figure; ask at the branch |
| Form ISR-2 from your bank | SEBI's form states no charge. Ask whether your bank charges |
| Affidavit or notarisation for a registrar | Should not be needed. SEBI says the registrar "shall not insist" on them for these updates |
| PAN change request | Charged by Protean or UTIITSL. See PAN name change. One request can carry the name and the signature |
| A Gazette notice for the name, if you do not have one | Paid only through BharatKosh, revised each financial year, never refunded |
| What we charge | Quoted on the call. If you need only your bank's form, we will say so and charge nothing |
