Jharkhand asks for Form 26 and the original FIR or NCR • A duplicate copies the record, it does not correct it • A name slip needs no Gazette

Duplicate RC in Jharkhand for a Lost Registration Certificate: Form 26, FIR and Name Mismatch

If your vehicle's RC is lost, torn or spoilt, you can ask for a duplicate. The Jharkhand Transport Department says "Any registered owner can apply for a duplicate registration certificate in case the original one is either lost or mutilated", with Form 26, the original FIR or NCR, insurance, pollution certificate, address proof and PAN or Form 60. Trouble starts when the names do not match: the FIR spells you one way, the RC record another, your PAN a third. We publish Gazette notices, and we say this first: a spelling slip here needs no Gazette notice.

26The form for a duplicate RC
1Original FIR or NCR, in Jharkhand's list
4Names to match: RC record, FIR, PAN and address proof
0Gazette notices needed for a spelling slip here
Quick answer

Five points, in the order you will need them. First, find your exact RC name from an old photocopy, the insurance or the Parivahan record. Second, report the loss to the police in that exact spelling. Third, check your PAN and address proof agree. Fourth, file Form 26 with the papers Jharkhand lists. This is our advice on the order. Fifth, a spelling slip here does not need a Gazette. We publish Gazette notices, and we say this plainly.

What Jharkhand Asks for a Duplicate RC

Duplicate RC for a lost registration certificate in Jharkhand, with Form 26, a police FIR copy, an insurance certificate and a PAN card side by side
The name on the FIR, the PAN and the address proof should match the name in the RC record.

We read the Jharkhand Transport Department's vehicle registration page, which gives its own list for this service, and Form 26 as another State posts it. Jharkhand's page does not print a fee, so ask your District Transport Office. The name fixes further down are our advice.

What Jharkhand asks for a duplicate RC

Torn or spoilt RCForm 26 asks you to hand in the damaged original

So four papers carry your name on this file: the RC record at the office, the FIR, your PAN and your address proof. If they disagree, the office may stop. Match them before you apply. This is our reading.

A duplicate copies the record. It does not correct it. If the old RC had your name wrong, the duplicate will too. Correct the name as a separate job. This is our advice.

Which Duplicate RC Name Mismatch Case You Have

Name problems in a duplicate RC fall into a few kinds. This sorting is ours, based on the papers owners send us.

Kinds of name problems in a duplicate RC application
What does not matchWhat it usually is
FIR spells you differently from the RCThe police wrote the name from your Aadhaar or from memory
RC had a short form or initialsThe dealer typed a short name at registration
PAN differs from the RCPAN carries your full name; the RC does not
Address proof in another nameA married name, or a bill in a family member's name
Insurance in another spellingTyped from the Aadhaar at renewal
Owner has diedA duplicate is not the route; the heir must transfer the RC
Owner genuinely changed nameA real change after registration, not carried to the RC
The FIR is the paper most often wrong. It is written in minutes at the police station. Give the police the RC spelling, from a photocopy or your insurance. See our police records name mismatch page.

How to Fix a Name Mismatch in a Duplicate RC Application

Each paper is corrected by the office that issued it. The transport office issues the duplicate; it does not correct your PAN or the FIR. The table below is our practical advice.

Fixing each kind of name problem in a duplicate RC application
SituationWhat we usually advise
FIR differs from the RCAsk the police station to note the RC spelling, or add an affidavit
RC record itself is wrongGet the duplicate, then correct it. See vehicle RC name correction
PAN differsSee PAN card name change
Aadhaar as address proof differsSee Aadhaar name change
Married name differsMarriage certificate and affidavit. See affidavit after marriage
Vehicle on loanGet the financier's NOC. See hypothecation and loan NOC
Owner has diedTransfer instead. See RC transfer after death

Find your RC name before you go to the police. An old photocopy, your insurance policy or the vehicle's record on Parivahan will show it. Give the police that exact spelling. If the FIR is already written differently, swear a one-and-the-same affidavit and file it with Form 26. Whether the office accepts it is its decision. This is our advice.

If the RC record itself had your name wrong, do not try to fix it inside the duplicate application. Get the duplicate first, then ask for a correction as a separate request. Mixing the two slows both. This is our advice.

Do not use a transfer of ownership to fix a name. It makes you the second owner of your own vehicle. This is our advice.
Keep a scan of the new RC. Store it on your phone and email it to yourself, so the next loss costs less. This is our advice.

Insurance, FASTag and Selling After a Duplicate RC

Once you have the duplicate, check that other records agree with it. This list is our advice.

Records to check after a duplicate RC
RecordWhat to watch
Motor insuranceSame name as the RC. See health and motor insurance
FASTagSee FASTag KYC and RC
Driving licenceSee driving licence name change
Selling laterA buyer will read the duplicate. See used vehicle RC transfer
Bank recordsSee bank records
PAN and AadhaarSee PAN and Aadhaar
If the old RC turns up later, do not use it. Hand it to the transport office. Two RCs for one vehicle invite trouble. This is our advice.

Does a Duplicate RC Need a Gazette Notice?

No, for a spelling slip or a short form. Those are fixed at the issuing office, or tied with an affidavit. A Gazette notice is for a genuine change of name, and losing an RC is not a change of your name at all. It only needs a copy of the record.

When a Gazette notice is relevant to a duplicate RC
SituationWhat usually applies
FIR spelling slipPolice note or affidavit. No Gazette
Short form on the RCAffidavit. No Gazette
PAN or Aadhaar slipUpdate at the issuer. No Gazette
Married nameMarriage certificate. No Gazette
Owner genuinely changed nameA Gazette notice may help, then the RC name correction
Our commercial interest, stated plainly. We publish Gazette notices, so selling one is how we earn. For an owner who has lost an RC, you should not be sold one. Where a name has genuinely changed, it goes in the Gazette of India, Part IV, since the Jharkhand state press stopped personal notices in July 2025, as reported. Our name correction against name change page explains the difference.

How to Get a Duplicate RC in Jharkhand, Step by Step

1

Find your exact RC name

From a photocopy or insurance.

2

Report the loss to the police

In the RC spelling.

3

Check your PAN and address proof

They should agree.

4

Get the financier's NOC

If the vehicle is on loan.

5

Swear an affidavit for any gap

One-and-the-same.

6

Fill Form 26

In duplicate, one copy attested.

7

File it with Jharkhand's list

FIR, insurance, pollution, address, PAN.

8

Correct the name separately

If the record itself was wrong.

The one rule that holds the whole job together. Give the police your RC spelling. The FIR is the paper most often wrong, and it is the hardest to change later.

Central Gazette Process for a Name From Jharkhand, and Where It Fits a Duplicate RC

Read this before the rest of this section, because a spelling slip in an RC or FIR never needs it. A duplicate RC name mismatch is fixed at the office that issued each paper, not in the Gazette. It is printed in full so you recognise at once when a notice is being sold to an owner who does not need one.

No district in Jharkhand has a gazette counter, so a genuine file goes from Ranchi, Jamshedpur, Dhanbad, Bokaro, Hazaribagh, Deoghar or anywhere else in the state to the Department of Publication, Civil Lines, Delhi 110054, and the notice publishes in Part IV of the Gazette of India. As reported in July 2025 the Finance Department stopped personal name change notifications from the Jharkhand Government Press with immediate effect, so there is no state alternative to fall back on.

The Eight Steps of a Name File Sent From Jharkhand

1

Settle the final name first

Letter by letter, with the spacing you want, and then use exactly that everywhere, Aadhaar included. A corrigendum after publication is a second fee and a second wait.

2

Pick the category, then its proforma

A genuine change of name is change of Name Adult or Major. A wrongly typed spelling is the public notice for a wrongly written name. Twelve categories exist and only one is yours.

3

Type the proforma in duplicate

Two originals with two witnesses giving signature, full name, address and mobile number on both copies. A change of name is signed in the old name; a public notice is signed in your own name.

4

Fill the employment field if it is a change of name

The adult proforma asks for the post of the applicant and the office or company name. A student or a homemaker should still complete it rather than leaving it blank, because a blank field brings the file back.

5

Publish and keep the original paper

One of the daily local leading newspapers, carrying both names in full, the father or husband name and the residential address. The whole original paper goes in the file, not a cutting.

6

Pay only through BharatKosh

The Non Tax Receipt Portal and nowhere else since October 2018. Select the Department of Publication by name, read the amount the portal shows on the day, pay in your own name and print the e-receipt.

7

Check every date, then post it yourself

Nothing in the file older than one year. Personally or by post or courier only, never through an agent or advocate. Photocopy everything first, because nothing sent in comes back.

8

Read the notice, then update in the right order

Check every word the day it publishes and download the e-Gazette copy. Then update Aadhaar and PAN, and then your bank account and residence papers, with the original Gazette notification.

The Five Papers in the File, and What Is Checked in Each

The five papers of a Central Gazette name file from Jharkhand and what the Department checks in each
The paperWhat is checked in it, clause by clause
1. The proforma, in duplicateThat it is the right category format; the existing full name exactly as your documents carry it; the new full name exactly as settled; the father or husband name; the full address with pin code; the post and office or company name where it is a change of name; the signature in the right name for the category; two witnesses complete with signature, full name, address and mobile number
2. The affidavit or undertakingThe same names and address as the proforma, word for word, with wording matching the category. On Rs 100 non-judicial stamp paper as our safe default
3. The original newspaperThe original paper, not a cutting; the paper name and date of publication visible; both names carried; the father or husband name and residential address; dated within the last year
4. Photographs, identity proof and any category paperTwo self attested passport photographs; self attested identity and address proof matching the proforma address; both witnesses proofs; and, in a public notice file, the attested photocopy of the connected document carrying the error
5. The CD, its certificate and the BharatKosh receiptMS Word, without the witness portion, with the name typed in place of the signature; the certificate that the hard copy and the soft copy are the same; the forwarding letter to the Controller of Publication with a telephone number and email; the e-receipt
The proforma is where files are lost, and there are twelve to choose from. A wrongly typed spelling filed on the change of name form declares henceforth be known as, claiming a change you never made. The Government charge already paid is not refunded, because BharatKosh payments are non-refundable. You then have six months to make good a shortcoming the Department points out, after which a fresh application with all new documents is required.
What to select on BharatKosh, field by field. Pay to the Department of Publication under the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, and pick the Ministry, the Pay and Accounts Office and the Drawing and Disbursing Officer by their names in the dropdown, never by a code copied off a website. The codes printed for this office on different websites do not agree with each other, and money paid into the wrong head cannot be traced to your file. Read the amount on the portal on the day you pay, because it is revised each financial year.
What a Gazette notice will not do for a lost RC. It will not issue a duplicate or correct the FIR by itself; each still needs its own correction. It links old and new names, and nothing more. Since we publish these notices, the honest version is this: for a spelling slip, you need none. Our name correction against name change page explains the categories.

The posting detail is on the sending the file to Delhi page, the change of name wording on the proforma format page and the public notice wording on the public notice proforma page, the charge by category on the fee and undertaking page, the reasons files come back on the rejection reasons page, and the download on the download page.

What a Duplicate RC Costs in Jharkhand

The costs vary by paper: the duplicate fee, perhaps a notary, perhaps an affidavit. Not a Gazette notice, for a slip. Jharkhand's page says "prescribed fee" and prints no amount, so neither do we.

Costs connected with a duplicate RC
ItemWhat we can and cannot tell you
Fee with Form 26As the District Transport Office charges. Ask before you pay
FIR or NCRLodged at the police station. We know of no fee for it
Attested copiesAs the attesting officer or notary charges
AffidavitStamp paper, Rs 100 as our safe default, plus the notary's fee
PAN or Aadhaar updateAs the issuer charges. See our PAN and Aadhaar pages
Gazette noticeNot needed for a lost RC or a spelling slip. Paid on BharatKosh, revised each year and non-refundable, if ever needed
What we chargeQuoted on the call. For telling you which paper to fix, nothing
The mistake that costs the most. Lodging the FIR in a spelling that does not match the RC, then going back to the police station. Find the RC spelling first. This is our advice.

Written and maintained by the Jharkhandnamechange.com documentation desk, led by founder Vipin Chauhan, B.Tech LL.B, with 5+ years filing with the Department of Publication. The list of papers comes from the Jharkhand Transport Department's own page. The form's declarations come from Form 26 as another State posts it. Three limits are declared openly on the page itself. First, Jharkhand's page prints no fee amount. Second, we could not open the Jharkhand version of Form 26. Third, the transport office decides whether an affidavit is enough. We publish Gazette notices, and this page says plainly that a slip needs none. We are a documentation consultancy and not a transport office and not the Department of Publication.
