A FASTag is issued only after the RC is checked on VAHAN • The owner's KYC is done with Aadhaar, PAN, driving licence or similar • A name slip is usually fixed at the RTO or bank, not with a Gazette

FASTag KYC Name Mismatch in Jharkhand: RC Owner Name, KYC Documents and the Fix

Every car, jeep and truck on Jharkhand's highways needs a working FASTag. The NPCI guidelines of 20 June 2024 say a tag "can only be issued in case of VAHAN verification", which checks the Registration Certificate (RC). IHMCL's FASTag page lists the owner's KYC documents: driving licence, PAN, passport, voter ID or Aadhaar. When the owner's name in the RC differs from the name in these documents, KYC can stay pending and the tag can be blocked. Most of these mismatches are fixed at the RTO or the bank, not with a Gazette notice. We publish Gazette notices, and we say this first.

1Active FASTag allowed per vehicle, per IHMCL
3Years between re-KYV checks, per the NPCI guidelines
7Working days at most for a KYC update, per IHMCL
0Gazette notices usually needed for a slip
Quick answer

Five points, in the order you will need them. First, find which name is wrong: the RC, or your KYC document. Second, a wrong RC is corrected at the RTO, and then VAHAN shows the right name. Third, a wrong KYC document, such as Aadhaar or PAN, is corrected at its own office. Fourth, if you bought a used vehicle, the old owner closes the old tag and you get a new one in your name. Fifth, update KYC on the issuer's portal; IHMCL says it takes at most 7 working days. We publish Gazette notices, and we say plainly that most FASTag name problems need none.

How FASTag Checks the Vehicle (KYV) and the Owner (KYC)

FASTag KYC name mismatch in Jharkhand, with the vehicle RC, the owner's Aadhaar and a FASTag on the windscreen
The vehicle is checked on VAHAN; the owner is checked by KYC.

There are two checks. Know Your Vehicle (KYV) checks the vehicle against VAHAN, the national vehicle database. KYC checks the person. The NPCI guidelines say "Customer KYC shall be performed as per regulatory guidelines".

What the NPCI guidelines and IHMCL say about FASTag checks
CheckWhat the source says
RC at issuance"Vehicle Registration Certificate (RC)"; digital copies only through Parivahan or DigiLocker
VAHAN check"Tag can only be issued in case of VAHAN verification"
Link to the vehicle"Every issued tag is linked to a unique VRN and chassis number"
Owner's KYC documentsDriving licence, PAN, passport, voter ID or Aadhaar, per IHMCL
Re-check"Re-KYV process is to be done every 3 years"
Missed checks can block the tag. The NPCI guidelines say: "In case the verification through VAHAN or Issuer is not done within T+3 days, the Issuer shall blacklist the tag". So a name problem that stops verification is worth fixing quickly.

Which FASTag Name Mismatch You Have

FASTag name problems usually fall into a few kinds. This sorting is ours, built on the two checks above.

Kinds of FASTag name mismatch
What does not matchWhat it usually is
RC owner name against your Aadhaar or PANOften a spelling slip in the RC
Your KYC document has the slipA slip in Aadhaar, PAN or the licence
RC still shows the old ownerA used vehicle not yet transferred
Wife's RC in maiden name, KYC in married nameA change by marriage
Old tag in someone else's nameA tag to be closed, not corrected
The RC is the anchor for the vehicle. Since the tag is issued only after VAHAN verification, a wrong RC must be fixed at the RTO. See our vehicle RC name correction page.

How to Fix Each FASTag Name Mismatch

Correct the wrong record at its own office, then update FASTag KYC. This is our practical advice; the guidelines we read do not say how to reconcile names.

Fixing each kind of FASTag name mismatch
MismatchWhat usually fixes it
RC spelling slipRTO correction. See vehicle RC name correction
Aadhaar or PAN slipCorrect it at UIDAI or the PAN office. See PAN and Aadhaar mismatch
Driving licence slipCorrect it at the licensing authority. See driving licence
Change by marriageUse a KYC document in the RC name, or update the RC with the marriage certificate
Genuine change of nameA Central Gazette notice, then Aadhaar, PAN, RC and FASTag
Update KYC after the correction. IHMCL says you can log in at the FASTag portal and update KYC online, and that processing takes "maximum 7 working days". Your bank's FASTag portal may offer the same. Keep your motor insurance in step too; see our motor insurance page.

FASTag for a Used Vehicle: Old Owner's Tag and One Vehicle One FASTag

Many name problems are really ownership problems. IHMCL says: "The original owner can close the FASTag account or wallet by reaching out to the concerned issuer bank. And a new owner can get a new FASTag from any of the 26 issuer banks."

FASTag steps when a vehicle changes hands
SituationWhat applies
You sold the vehicleClose your FASTag with your issuer bank
You bought the vehicleTransfer the RC at the RTO, then get a new tag in your name
Two tags on one vehicle"All the FASTags linked to a single vehicle except the latest one shall be de-activated."
Tag more than 5 years oldTo be replaced by the issuer "on best effort basis", per NPCI
Transfer the RC first. A new tag needs VAHAN verification of the RC. If the RC is still in the old owner's name, your KYC will not match it. This is an ownership transfer at the RTO, not a name correction.

Does a FASTag Name Mismatch Need a Gazette Notice?

Usually not. Most FASTag name problems are a slip in the RC or a KYC document, or a used vehicle not yet transferred. Those are fixed at the RTO, UIDAI, the PAN office or the bank. A Gazette notice is for a genuine change of name.

When a Gazette notice is relevant to FASTag
SituationWhat usually applies
RC spelling slipRTO correction. No Gazette
KYC document slipIts own office. No Gazette
Used vehicleRC transfer and new tag. No Gazette
Genuine new nameA Central Gazette notice is the clean route
Our commercial interest, stated plainly. We publish Gazette notices. For most FASTag name problems, you do not need one. Where you have genuinely changed your name, it goes in the Gazette of India, Part IV, since the Jharkhand state press stopped personal notices in July 2025, as reported.

How to Fix a FASTag KYC Name Mismatch, Step by Step

1

Check your FASTag status on the issuer portal

KYC pending or blocked?

2

Ask the bank which name does not match

RC or KYC document.

3

Compare the RC with your KYC document

Letter by letter.

4

Fix the RC at the RTO if wrong

VAHAN will then show it.

5

Fix Aadhaar, PAN or licence if wrong

At its own office.

6

For a used vehicle, transfer the RC

Then get a new tag.

7

Close any old tag on the vehicle

Only one stays active.

8

Update KYC on the portal

With the corrected document.

9

Wait up to 7 working days

Per IHMCL.

10

Note the re-KYV date

Every 3 years.

The one rule that holds the whole job together. Fix the wrong record at its own office, then update FASTag KYC. The bank cannot correct your RC or Aadhaar for you.

Central Gazette Process for a Name From Jharkhand, and Where It Fits a FASTag Name Mismatch

Read this before the rest of this section, because most FASTag name problems never need it. An RC slip is fixed at the RTO; a KYC document slip at its own office; a used vehicle needs an RC transfer and a new tag. No Gazette notice is needed for those. It is printed in full so you recognise at once when a notice is being sold to a vehicle owner who does not need one.

No district in Jharkhand has a gazette counter, so a genuine file goes from Ranchi, Jamshedpur, Dhanbad, Bokaro, Hazaribagh, Deoghar or anywhere else in the state to the Department of Publication, Civil Lines, Delhi 110054, and the notice publishes in Part IV of the Gazette of India. As reported in July 2025 the Finance Department stopped personal name change notifications from the Jharkhand Government Press with immediate effect, so there is no state alternative to fall back on.

The Eight Steps of a Name File Sent From Jharkhand

1

Settle the final name first

Letter by letter, with the spacing you want, and then use exactly that everywhere, Aadhaar included. A corrigendum after publication is a second fee and a second wait.

2

Pick the category, then its proforma

A genuine change of name is change of Name Adult or Major. A wrongly typed spelling is the public notice for a wrongly written name. Twelve categories exist and only one is yours.

3

Type the proforma in duplicate

Two originals with two witnesses giving signature, full name, address and mobile number on both copies. A change of name is signed in the old name; a public notice is signed in your own name.

4

Fill the employment field if it is a change of name

The adult proforma asks for the post of the applicant and the office or company name. A student or a homemaker should still complete it rather than leaving it blank, because a blank field brings the file back.

5

Publish and keep the original paper

One of the daily local leading newspapers, carrying both names in full, the father or husband name and the residential address. The whole original paper goes in the file, not a cutting.

6

Pay only through BharatKosh

The Non Tax Receipt Portal and nowhere else since October 2018. Select the Department of Publication by name, read the amount the portal shows on the day, pay in your own name and print the e-receipt.

7

Check every date, then post it yourself

Nothing in the file older than one year. Personally or by post or courier only, never through an agent or advocate. Photocopy everything first, because nothing sent in comes back.

8

Read the notice, then update in the right order

Check every word the day it publishes and download the e-Gazette copy. Then update Aadhaar and PAN, then the RC at the RTO, then FASTag KYC with your bank.

The Five Papers in the File, and What Is Checked in Each

The five papers of a Central Gazette name file from Jharkhand and what the Department checks in each
The paperWhat is checked in it, clause by clause
1. The proforma, in duplicateThat it is the right category format; the existing full name exactly as your documents carry it; the new full name exactly as settled; the father or husband name; the full address with pin code; the post and office or company name where it is a change of name; the signature in the right name for the category; two witnesses complete with signature, full name, address and mobile number
2. The affidavit or undertakingThe same names and address as the proforma, word for word, with wording matching the category. On Rs 100 non-judicial stamp paper as our safe default
3. The original newspaperThe original paper, not a cutting; the paper name and date of publication visible; both names carried; the father or husband name and residential address; dated within the last year
4. Photographs, identity proof and any category paperTwo self attested passport photographs; self attested identity and address proof matching the proforma address; both witnesses proofs; and, in a public notice file, the attested photocopy of the connected document carrying the error
5. The CD, its certificate and the BharatKosh receiptMS Word, without the witness portion, with the name typed in place of the signature; the certificate that the hard copy and the soft copy are the same; the forwarding letter to the Controller of Publication with a telephone number and email; the e-receipt
The proforma is where files are lost, and there are twelve to choose from. A wrongly typed spelling filed on the change of name form declares henceforth be known as, claiming a change you never made. The Government charge already paid is not refunded, because BharatKosh payments are non-refundable. You then have six months to make good a shortcoming the Department points out, after which a fresh application with all new documents is required.
What to select on BharatKosh, field by field. Pay to the Department of Publication under the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, and pick the Ministry, the Pay and Accounts Office and the Drawing and Disbursing Officer by their names in the dropdown, never by a code copied off a website. The codes printed for this office on different websites do not agree with each other, and money paid into the wrong head cannot be traced to your file. Read the amount on the portal on the day you pay, because it is revised each financial year.
What a Gazette notice will not do for a FASTag. It will not change your RC or your FASTag by itself; the RTO and the bank still update them. It links old and new names, and nothing more. Since we publish these notices, the honest version is this: for most FASTag name problems, you need none. Our name correction against name change page explains the categories.

The posting detail is on the sending the file to Delhi page, the change of name wording on the proforma format page and the public notice wording on the public notice proforma page, the charge by category on the fee and undertaking page, the reasons files come back on the rejection reasons page, and the download on the download page.

What Fixing a FASTag Name Mismatch Costs

We did not verify a fee for updating FASTag KYC, so we print none. The costs are the corrections at their own offices, and usually not a Gazette notice.

Costs connected with a FASTag name mismatch
ItemWhat we can and cannot tell you
FASTag KYC updateAsk your issuer bank; we print no figure
RC correction or transferThe RTO's fee. See our RC page
New FASTagThe issuer bank's charge and deposit
Affidavit, if askedStamp paper, Rs 100 as our safe default, plus the notary's fee
Gazette noticeOnly for a genuine new name. Paid on BharatKosh, revised each year and non-refundable
What we chargeQuoted on the call. For telling you which record to fix, nothing
The mistake that costs the most. Letting a name problem stop verification until the tag is blacklisted. Fix the name before the tag is blocked.

Written and maintained by the Jharkhandnamechange.com documentation desk, led by founder Vipin Chauhan, B.Tech LL.B, with 5+ years filing with the Department of Publication. The FASTag rules on this page are quoted from NPCI's guidelines on customer onboarding and re-KYV of 20 June 2024, as published by IHMCL, and from IHMCL's FASTag user page: VAHAN verification, the RC, the link to VRN and chassis, re-KYV every 3 years, blacklisting, KYC documents, the 7-day update, used vehicles and One Vehicle One FASTag. Three limits are declared openly on the page itself. First, neither source sets a name-matching rule, so that advice is ours. Second, we print no KYC update fee. Third, bank portals differ. We publish Gazette notices, and this page says plainly that most FASTag name problems need none. We are a documentation consultancy and not advocates, not a bank, not the RTO, and not the Department of Publication. Who we are is on the about page.
