Name Change in Insurance Policy for Health and Motor in Jharkhand
A life policy runs for decades and is hard to alter. Health and motor policies are annual contracts that are reissued every single year, and that changes everything about how you should handle a wrong name. You are handed a free correction window every twelve months, at renewal, when the document is being printed again anyway. Miss it, and the mismatch simply waits: on a health policy it waits at a cashless admission desk, and on a motor policy it waits until a claim or a sale. After a vehicle is sold there is a trap worth knowing about in advance, because the law treats the third party cover and the own damage cover completely differently.
Treat the two kinds separately, because they fail in different places. Health. The policy covers a list of members, not just you, and each member's name is compared against their identity document at the moment of admission. A wrong spelling on a spouse, a child or a parent is discovered at a cashless desk in a hospital, by somebody who is not in a position to argue. So read the whole member list, not only your own line, and get corrections done as an endorsement, or free at renewal. Motor. The policy has to follow the registration certificate of the vehicle, so a motor name question is usually downstream of an RC matter rather than an insurance one. And after a sale there is a split that catches people out. Under Section 157 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, when a vehicle is transferred with its policy, the certificate and policy are "deemed to have been transferred" to the new owner, and the transferee must apply to the insurer within fourteen days so the records are changed. A paper published by a serving Additional District and Sessions Judge sets out the consequence plainly: for a third party victim, the insurer's liability does not cease even where no intimation was given, but the deemed transfer does not apply to own damage, because once the vehicle is sold the original owner has no insurable interest in it. So after an untransferred sale the vehicle is still covered for injuring somebody else, and covered for almost nothing else. Fourteen days, and it is free at renewal.
Why the Renewal Is the Cheapest Moment to Fix an Insurance Name
This is the one advantage general insurance has over every other record on this website, and almost nobody takes it. A health or motor policy is not a thirty year document sitting in an almirah. It is rewritten every twelve months.
| The feature | What it means for a name correction |
|---|---|
| The policy is reissued every year | At renewal the document is being generated again in any case, so this is the natural moment to have the details corrected. Bring it up before the renewal is processed, not after the new schedule arrives |
| Mid term changes are made by endorsement | You do not have to wait for the renewal. An endorsement alters the running policy, and insurers handle name and spelling corrections this way. Ask your insurer what it needs, because the requirement differs between companies |
| Nothing is published anywhere | This is a correction between you and your insurer. No gazette is involved at any stage, and anybody quoting you a gazette file for a spelling on a health card is selling you something you do not need |
| The schedule lists more than one name, on a family health policy | Read every line, not just the first. The member whose name is wrong is usually not the person who reads the policy |
| Continuity matters on health policies | Waiting periods and continuity build up year on year, so this is not a document to let lapse while sorting out a name. Fix the name, keep the policy running |
| You change insurer more easily than on a life policy | Which is a reason to have the name clean. A mismatch is an awkward thing to be carrying at the moment you are moving a health policy to another insurer |
Health Insurance: The Member List and the Cashless Admission Desk
A health policy is not a document about you. It is a document about a list of people, and the list is checked one name at a time, at a hospital counter, usually in the worst hour of somebody's year.
| Where it surfaces | What happens and what to do |
|---|---|
| Cashless admission, at the hospital desk | The name on the policy or health card is compared against the patient's identity document. A difference at that moment is not a paperwork question, it is a delay while somebody is waiting to be admitted. This is the reason to read the member list on a calm day |
| A spouse still listed in her maiden form | Very common in this state, where many women take a husband surname at marriage while the policy keeps the form used when it was first bought. Bring her entry to the documents she holds today. The position is on our Kumari or Devi to the husband surname page |
| A child listed with a pet name | Raju on the policy, Rajesh on the school certificate and the Aadhaar. It sits quietly for years and then matters at an admission. Our short name and full name page explains why that is not a spelling error at all |
| A dependent parent whose name differs from their own papers | Older records, older spellings. The policy entry should match what their documents say, not what the family calls them |
| At reimbursement, where you paid and are claiming back | Here the chain is longer: the policy, the hospital bill, the identity document and the bank account the money must reach. A name that differs anywhere along it slows the whole thing |
| When moving the policy to another insurer | An awkward moment to be carrying a mismatch, because a fresh insurer is looking at your documents properly, some for the first time |
Motor Insurance: The RC, Section 157 and the Fourteen Days
A motor policy is attached to a vehicle, and it is expected to agree with the registration certificate. That single fact reorders everything, because it means most motor name questions are really RC questions wearing an insurance coat.
| Your situation | What it actually is |
|---|---|
| Your own name is spelt wrongly on the policy, and the RC is correct | An ordinary endorsement with the insurer, and free to raise at renewal. Bring it to the form the RC carries, because that is what the policy is expected to match |
| The RC itself carries the wrong spelling | Then the insurance is not your first problem. Correct the RC, and let the policy follow it at the next renewal or by endorsement. Our driving licence page covers the transport side of a name correction |
| You have bought a vehicle and the policy is still in the seller's name | This is the one that matters most, and section 157 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 governs it. The certificate and policy are "deemed to have been transferred" to you, and you must apply to the insurer within fourteen days with the details of the transfer so the records are changed |
| You have sold a vehicle and never told the insurer | A paper published by a serving Additional District and Sessions Judge sets out the position: for a third party victim, the insurer's liability does not cease merely because no intimation was given. But you no longer have an insurable interest in a vehicle you have sold, so you cannot claim for damage to it |
| The gap nobody explains, after an untransferred sale | The deemed transfer does not extend to own damage. So the third party side continues while the own damage side is effectively stranded: the seller has no interest in the vehicle and the buyer is not named on the policy. The vehicle is insured against injuring somebody else and against very little else |
| The no claim bonus | It belongs to the person, not the vehicle. Sort this out at the time of sale rather than discovering it a year later, and ask your insurer how it handles the bonus when a vehicle changes hands |
How to Correct a Name on a Health or Motor Policy in Jharkhand, Step by Step
Read the schedule properly, once
On a health policy that means every member's name, not just the proposer's. On a motor policy it means the name against the RC. Do it on a quiet evening rather than at a counter.
Decide what each entry should match
Per person, written down. For health, the document that member actually holds. For motor, the registration certificate. This is the first question you will be asked and families rarely arrive with it settled.
Check which record is actually wrong
If the RC carries the error, correcting the policy alone achieves nothing. If a member's Aadhaar is the odd one out, fix that first. Correct upstream, then let the policy follow.
Time it with the renewal if you can
The document is being reissued anyway, so raise the correction before the renewal is processed. If the renewal is months away, ask for an endorsement instead rather than waiting.
After a vehicle transfer, write within fourteen days
Buying or selling. Give the insurer the details of the transfer so the records are changed, as section 157 contemplates. Keep a copy and the acknowledgement.
Ask the insurer what it needs, in writing
Requirements differ between companies and between health and motor. Let the insurer's written answer be your document list rather than a list copied from an article about a different company.
Check the corrected document when it arrives
Read the endorsement or the new schedule letter by letter, every name on it. A correction that introduces a fresh error is common and easiest to catch on the day it arrives.
Keep the escalation route in reserve
If the insurer does not act, its own grievance channel comes first, and the Insurance Ombudsman after that. Build the paper record as you go so that route is available if you need it.
The identity records that everything else is checked against are on our Aadhaar and bank records pages, and where a verification is imminent, see name mismatch at document verification.
Central Gazette Process for a Name From Jharkhand, and Where It Fits a Health or Motor Policy
No district in Jharkhand has a gazette counter, so a genuine file goes from Ranchi, Jamshedpur, Dhanbad, Bokaro, Hazaribagh, Deoghar or anywhere else in the state to the Department of Publication, Civil Lines, Delhi 110054, and the notice publishes in Part IV of the Gazette of India. As reported in July 2025 the Finance Department stopped personal name change notifications from the Jharkhand Government Press with immediate effect, so there is no state alternative to fall back on.
The Eight Steps of a Name File Sent From Jharkhand
Settle the final name first
Letter by letter, with the spacing you want, and then use exactly that everywhere, Aadhaar included. A corrigendum after publication is a second fee and a second wait.
Pick the category, then its proforma
A genuine change of name is change of Name Adult or Major. A wrongly typed spelling is the public notice for a wrongly written name. Twelve categories exist and only one is yours.
Type the proforma in duplicate
Two originals with two witnesses giving signature, full name, address and mobile number on both copies. A change of name is signed in the old name; a public notice is signed in your own name.
Fill the employment field if it is a change of name
The adult proforma asks for the post of the applicant and the office or company name, a field the public notice form does not have. Salaried applicants leave it blank and the file comes back.
Publish and keep the original paper
One of the daily local leading newspapers, carrying both names in full, the father or husband name and the residential address. The whole original paper goes in the file, not a cutting.
Pay only through BharatKosh
The Non Tax Receipt Portal and nowhere else since October 2018. Select the Department of Publication by name, read the amount the portal shows on the day, pay in your own name and print the e-receipt.
Check every date, then post it yourself
Nothing in the file older than one year. Personally or by post or courier only, never through an agent or advocate. Photocopy everything first, because nothing sent in comes back.
Read the notice, then update the records
Check every word the day it publishes, download the e-Gazette copy of that Part IV issue, and then work through Aadhaar and the RC first and the policy after them.
The Five Papers in the File, and What Is Checked in Each
| The paper | What is checked in it, clause by clause |
|---|---|
| 1. The proforma, in duplicate | That it is the right category format; the existing full name exactly as your documents carry it; the new full name exactly as settled; the father or husband name; the full address with pin code; the post and office or company name where it is a change of name; the signature in the right name for the category; two witnesses complete with signature, full name, address and mobile number |
| 2. The affidavit or undertaking | The same names and address as the proforma, word for word, with wording matching the category. On Rs 100 non-judicial stamp paper as our safe default |
| 3. The original newspaper | The original paper, not a cutting; the paper name and date of publication visible; both names carried; the father or husband name and residential address; dated within the last year |
| 4. Photographs, identity proof and any category paper | Two self attested passport photographs; self attested identity and address proof matching the proforma address; both witnesses proofs; and, in a public notice file, the attested photocopy of the connected document carrying the error |
| 5. The CD, its certificate and the BharatKosh receipt | MS Word, without the witness portion, with the name typed in place of the signature; the certificate that the hard copy and the soft copy are the same; the forwarding letter to the Controller of Publication with a telephone number and email; the e-receipt |
The posting detail is on the sending the file to Delhi page, the change of name wording on the proforma format page and the public notice wording on the public notice proforma page, the charge by category on the fee and undertaking page, the reasons files come back on the rejection reasons page, and the download on the download page.
What a Health or Motor Insurance Name Correction Costs in Jharkhand
| Item | Cost | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Raising it at renewal, which is the cheapest route | The document is being reissued anyway. We do not print an insurer charge, because it differs between companies and we have not verified any, but this is the moment at which you are least likely to be charged for anything | With the renewal |
| A mid term endorsement | Whatever your insurer charges for an endorsement, if anything. Ask your own insurer, in writing, rather than trusting a figure written about another company | Set by the insurer. We do not print a timeline we have not verified |
| Writing to the insurer after a vehicle transfer | Nothing but a letter and the postage. This is the highest value fourteen days of paperwork on this page, and it is essentially free | Within fourteen days of the transfer |
| Correcting the RC, where the registration certificate is the record that is actually wrong | The transport office own charge. We do not print transport charges or timelines we have not verified | Set by the office |
| Correcting Aadhaar first, where a member identity document is the odd one out | Aadhaar charges a fee per attempt with no refund and limits how often a name may be updated. Decide the final form before you go | Set by the centre |
| Affidavit, where the insurer asks for one | Rs 100 non-judicial stamp paper and the notary charge. Two originals, because the office keeps one. Do not buy it before somebody asks | The same day |
| Government printing charge, only in a genuine change of your own name | The guidelines print Rs 1,100 for an adult change of name and Rs 1,400 for a public notice, for FY 2016 to 2017, each with the caveat that the charge varies each financial year and from case to case. What BharatKosh shows on the payment screen the day you pay is the figure that counts | Part IV publishes weekly, so allow several weeks from posting |
| Our charge | Quoted on your papers before you pay anything, and confirmed in writing. We print no service price on any page of this site | |
On this page the cheapest possible approach is also the best one: read the schedule at renewal and raise everything then. What turns this into an expensive problem is never the correction. It is a family discovering a mismatch at a hospital admission desk, or two people discovering after an accident that a sold vehicle was never transferred on the policy. Our name change cost page sets out the line items in full.
Send the policy schedule and we will read the whole list
Send the policy schedule, which is the page listing the policy number, the insurer and every name on the cover. For a health policy, send the Aadhaar of each member named on it, because the entry that fails at an admission desk is usually a spouse, a child or a parent rather than yours. For a motor policy, send the registration certificate as well, since the policy is expected to agree with it, and tell us if the vehicle has been bought or sold recently and when. Our first reply tells you which entries actually differ, which record is the wrong one, whether it should go as an endorsement now or free at the renewal, and what to put in the request. Details on the contact page.

Myths About Health and Motor Insurance Name Correction
| What people are told | What is actually so |
|---|---|
| You need a gazette notification to correct a name on an insurance policy | You do not. A health or motor policy is corrected by endorsement or at renewal, and nothing is published. A gazette matters only where you are genuinely changing your own name across all your records |
| Only the proposer's name matters | On a family health policy the cover is a list of members, and every name on it is checked against that person's identity document at admission. The entry that fails is usually not yours |
| Fix it when a claim comes up | The claim is the worst moment, because on a health policy it means somebody is being admitted. The renewal is the free window, and it comes round every twelve months whether you use it or not |
| After selling a vehicle, the policy is the buyer's problem | Not entirely. Under section 157 the policy is deemed transferred and the transferee must apply within fourteen days. Until that is done there is a gap that both parties are exposed to in different ways, so the seller should write too |
| If the policy was never transferred, nobody is covered at all | Not so, and the distinction matters. A paper by a serving Additional District and Sessions Judge sets out that the insurer's liability to a third party victim does not cease merely because no intimation was given. It is the own damage side that is stranded, because the seller has no insurable interest in a vehicle they no longer own |
| Correct the policy to match your oldest certificate | Correct it to match the record it is expected to agree with: for motor, the RC; for health, the identity document each member actually holds. An insurance policy agreeing only with an old marksheet helps nobody |
| The no claim bonus stays with the vehicle | It belongs to the person, not the vehicle. Deal with it at the time of sale and ask your insurer how it handles the bonus when a vehicle changes hands, rather than discovering the position a year later |
| Any insurer's document list will do | Requirements differ between companies and between health and motor. Ask your own insurer in writing and let that answer be your list |
Key Terms in a Health and Motor Insurance Name Correction
| Term | What it means in practice |
|---|---|
| Policy schedule | The page carrying the policy number, the insurer, the period of cover and every name on the policy. The document this page asks you to read |
| Endorsement | A change made to a running policy without waiting for the renewal. How a mid term name correction is recorded |
| Renewal | The annual reissue of the policy. The natural and usually cheapest moment to have details corrected |
| Insured member | A person covered under a health policy. Each one is checked separately against their own identity document |
| Cashless | Treatment where the insurer settles with the hospital directly. The moment at which a member name mismatch is usually discovered |
| Reimbursement | Where you pay and claim back. A longer chain, ending at a bank account whose name must also agree |
| Registration certificate | The RC of the vehicle. A motor policy is expected to agree with it, which is why a motor name question is often an RC question |
| Section 157 | The provision of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 under which a certificate of insurance and policy are deemed transferred with the vehicle, with an application to the insurer within fourteen days |
| Deemed transfer | The policy being treated as transferred with the vehicle by operation of law, rather than because anybody filed a form |
| Insurable interest | Having something to lose in the thing insured. Once a vehicle is sold the former owner has none, which is why the own damage side does not simply carry on |
| No claim bonus | The discount earned for claim free years. It belongs to the person rather than the vehicle |
| Grievance channel and Ombudsman | The insurer's own complaint route, and the external forum after it. Where an unresolved insurance matter goes, and why the paper record matters |
