Mother's Name Correction in a JAC Marksheet and Certificate in Jharkhand
A wrong mother's name on a JAC marksheet usually comes from one of three places: a spelling slip at registration, a maiden name against a married name, or a Devi or Kumari added or dropped. Only the first is truly an error on your certificate. JAC corrects through the school, against the school's own admission register. As reported, the board handles corrections to the "admit card, mark sheet and certificate online", with the request forwarded by the school headmaster. If the admission register itself is right, no Gazette notice is needed. And if your mother's own papers show her married surname, that is her change, not a mistake on your marksheet. We publish Gazette notices, and we say this first because most readers of this page will not need one.
Five points, in the order you will need them. First, decide which case you have: a spelling slip, a maiden against married name, or a Devi or Kumari difference. Second, check the school admission register, because JAC corrects against it. Third, if the register is right and the certificate is wrong, apply through the school; no Gazette notice is needed. Fourth, if your mother's own papers now show her married surname, do not change your certificate; carry her marriage proof to link the two names. Fifth, only if the admission register itself is wrong does a published public notice come in, and one notice can cover several children. We publish Gazette notices, and we say plainly when you do not need one.
Three Causes of a Wrong Mother's Name on a JAC Marksheet
Before you apply anywhere, decide which of these you have. This is our sorting method, built from the cases we see, not a JAC rule. It matters because only one of the three is a correction on your certificate.
| What you see | What it usually is |
|---|---|
| A letter wrong or missing | A spelling slip. Correct it through the school |
| Her maiden surname on your certificate, married surname on her Aadhaar | Her change, not your error. Link the two names; do not correct the certificate |
| Devi or Kumari on one paper, not the other | Usually the same person. See Kumari or Devi to husband's surname |
| No mother's name at all | A blank, not an error. See mother's name missing |
Mother's Maiden Name on a JAC Certificate and Married Name on Her Aadhaar
Many mothers were registered on their children's school records under one surname and later used another. Your certificate recorded the name the school was given at admission. If that was her name at the time, your certificate is not wrong. What is needed is a way to show that the two names belong to the same woman.
| What links the two names | How it helps |
|---|---|
| Her marriage certificate | Shows the woman and the marriage. See marriage certificate correction if it is itself wrong |
| An old document in her maiden name | Shows she carried that name |
| A one-and-the-same affidavit by your mother | States both names are hers. See mother's name affidavit |
| Her Gazette notice, if she has one | Strong, but not needed just for this |
Check the School Admission Register Before a JAC Mother's Name Correction
JAC corrects a certificate against the school's admission register, applied through the school. So the first question is simple: what does the register say about your mother's name?
| The admission register shows | What usually applies |
|---|---|
| The right name; the certificate is wrong | A school-route correction. No Gazette |
| The same wrong name as the certificate | The school may not be able to correct it; see the public notice section below |
| Her maiden name, as she was then | Not an error. Link her names instead |
| The register is lost or the school closed | See JAC correction after many years |
How to Apply for a Mother's Name Correction in a JAC Marksheet
As reported, JAC will "correct the mistake in the admit card, mark sheet and certificate online", with students applying online with fees through their school headmaster. For students still in school, JAC has also opened data correction windows before admit cards; one reported for Class 11 in April 2025 covered "name, name of the parents and the date of birth".
| Your situation | What usually applies |
|---|---|
| Still in school, before the exam | Watch for the data correction window and fix it then; it is the easiest time |
| Result already out | Apply through the school headmaster, with the register copy |
| What to attach | Admission register copy; your mother's own document showing the right spelling |
| Fee and form | We could not confirm the current JAC fee or form; ask the school |
When the Admission Register Is Wrong: Public Notice for a Mother's Name
If the school's own register carries the same wrong spelling, the school may have nothing to correct against. That is the one case where a published notice helps: the public notice for a wrongly written name, which quotes the wrong spelling exactly as printed and names each certificate.
| Situation | What usually applies |
|---|---|
| Register right, certificate wrong | School correction. No notice |
| Maiden against married name | Link the names. No notice |
| Register and certificate both wrong | Public notice. See JAC register wrong spelling |
| Several children with the same wrong spelling | One notice for all. See one public notice for several certificates |

Central Gazette Process for a Name From Jharkhand, and and When a Mother's Name on a JAC Certificate Needs It
No district in Jharkhand has a gazette counter, so a genuine file goes from Ranchi, Jamshedpur, Dhanbad, Bokaro, Hazaribagh, Deoghar or anywhere else in the state to the Department of Publication, Civil Lines, Delhi 110054, and the notice publishes in Part IV of the Gazette of India. As reported in July 2025 the Finance Department stopped personal name change notifications from the Jharkhand Government Press with immediate effect, so there is no state alternative to fall back on.
The Eight Steps of a Name File Sent From Jharkhand
Settle the final name first
Letter by letter, with the spacing you want, and then use exactly that everywhere, Aadhaar included. A corrigendum after publication is a second fee and a second wait.
Pick the category, then its proforma
A genuine change of name is change of Name Adult or Major. A wrongly typed spelling is the public notice for a wrongly written name. Twelve categories exist and only one is yours.
Type the proforma in duplicate
Two originals with two witnesses giving signature, full name, address and mobile number on both copies. A change of name is signed in the old name; a public notice is signed in your own name.
Fill the employment field if it is a change of name
The adult proforma asks for the post of the applicant and the office or company name. A student or a homemaker should still complete it rather than leaving it blank, because a blank field brings the file back.
Publish and keep the original paper
One of the daily local leading newspapers, carrying both names in full, the father or husband name and the residential address. The whole original paper goes in the file, not a cutting.
Pay only through BharatKosh
The Non Tax Receipt Portal and nowhere else since October 2018. Select the Department of Publication by name, read the amount the portal shows on the day, pay in your own name and print the e-receipt.
Check every date, then post it yourself
Nothing in the file older than one year. Personally or by post or courier only, never through an agent or advocate. Photocopy everything first, because nothing sent in comes back.
Read the notice, then use it in the right order
Check every word the day it publishes and download the e-Gazette copy. Then take it to the school, so the headmaster can forward the correction to JAC with the notice attached. Other records follow the corrected certificate.
The Five Papers in the File, and What Is Checked in Each
| The paper | What is checked in it, clause by clause |
|---|---|
| 1. The proforma, in duplicate | That it is the right category format; the existing full name exactly as your documents carry it; the new full name exactly as settled; the father or husband name; the full address with pin code; the post and office or company name where it is a change of name; the signature in the right name for the category; two witnesses complete with signature, full name, address and mobile number |
| 2. The affidavit or undertaking | The same names and address as the proforma, word for word, with wording matching the category. On Rs 100 non-judicial stamp paper as our safe default |
| 3. The original newspaper | The original paper, not a cutting; the paper name and date of publication visible; both names carried; the father or husband name and residential address; dated within the last year |
| 4. Photographs, identity proof and any category paper | Two self attested passport photographs; self attested identity and address proof matching the proforma address; both witnesses proofs; and, in a public notice file, the attested photocopy of the connected document carrying the error |
| 5. The CD, its certificate and the BharatKosh receipt | MS Word, without the witness portion, with the name typed in place of the signature; the certificate that the hard copy and the soft copy are the same; the forwarding letter to the Controller of Publication with a telephone number and email; the e-receipt |
The posting detail is on the sending the file to Delhi page, the change of name wording on the proforma format page and the public notice wording on the public notice proforma page, the charge by category on the fee and undertaking page, the reasons files come back on the rejection reasons page, and the download on the download page.
What a Mother's Name Correction in a JAC Marksheet Costs
For most cases the cost is a school application and JAC's own fee. A Gazette cost comes in only when the admission register itself is wrong.
| Item | What we can and cannot tell you |
|---|---|
| JAC correction fee | Paid through the school. We could not confirm the current figure |
| Linking maiden and married names | Her marriage certificate or an affidavit; Rs 100 stamp paper as our safe default, plus the notary's fee |
| Public notice, only if the register is wrong | Paid only through BharatKosh; revised each financial year, never refunded. See public notice fee |
| Several children | One notice can cover them all |
| Maiden against married name | No Gazette cost |
| What we charge | Quoted on the call. If no notice is needed, we will say so and charge nothing |
