Name Mismatch in NEET and JEE Application: Aadhaar and Class 10 Certificate in Jharkhand

Many students find, on the NEET or JEE form, that the name on their Aadhaar is not the name on their Class 10 certificate. For the application itself there is a way through. As reported for JEE Main 2026, the National Testing Agency said that "in case of name mismatch in Aadhaar Card and Class 10 marksheet or certificate of any candidate, an option will be given to overcome the issue during the application process." But getting past the form is not the same as solving the problem. The same name difference comes back at counselling, at admission, and at every scholarship and hostel office after that. For a student in Jharkhand, the real question is which of the two records to correct, and whether there is time. Five points, in the order you will need them. First, do not panic at the form. As reported for JEE Main 2026, when the names differ the form shows "Name mismatch during Aadhaar Authentication. The application forms now check your details against Aadhaar. If the name on Aadhaar does not match the name you give from your Class 10 certificate, the form notices. For JEE Main 2026, Careers360 reported the National Testing Agency's guidance in these words.

The form lets both names through. Everything after the form wants them to match. So before the next exam, decide which record to move. The rule of thumb: correct whichever one differs from the name you have always used in school, which is usually the Class 10 certificate.

Why the Class 10 certificate usually wins. It is older than most students' Aadhaar updates, it is the record your Class 12 board and every later office read your name from, and it is the harder one to change. The honest answer is: less than you think, and it depends on which record is wrong. We print no number of days for any correction, because none of the offices involved promises one in the rules we have read. What we can tell you is which fixes are usually quick and which are not.

If the form closes next week, do not try to fix everything first. Apply with the names as they are, using the mismatch option, and keep a spelling correction affidavit ready. After you submit

NEET and JEE Correction Window: What Can and Cannot Be Changed in the Name

The National Testing Agency usually opens a short correction window after the application closes. For NEET UG 2026, Collegedunia reported, citing an NTA public notice of 11 March 2026, that the window ran from 12 to 14 March 2026, and that "Details such as registered mobile number, email ID, Aadhaar or identity proof information, and major changes in candidate name are not allowed to be edited."

Use the window for a typing slip, not for a name problem. If you typed a letter wrong on the form, the window may let you fix it. If your Aadhaar and Class 10 names genuinely differ, the window will not solve that, because the identity details are locked. That is a record correction, done outside the form. Check the current year's notice, because these rules are set afresh for each exam.

Where the mismatch comes back

For state quota seats in Jharkhand, counselling is run by the Jharkhand Combined Entrance Competitive Examination Board; for other seats, by the relevant central or institute bodies. Central Gazette Process for a Name From Jharkhand, and Where a Student Needs It Before NEET or JEE

Read this before the rest of this section, because most spelling errors never need it. A typing error in one record is corrected by the office that made it, with the affidavit on this page to explain. This process earns its cost in two cases: where the wrong spelling is in the original register itself, so there is nothing correct to correct against, and where you actually want a new spelling, which is a change of name. For an error, the category is the public notice for a wrongly written name, not change of name. It is printed in full so you can judge which situation you are in, and so you recognise at once when a notice is being sold for a typing error an office could simply fix.

No district in Jharkhand has a gazette counter, so a genuine file goes from Ranchi, Jamshedpur, Dhanbad, Bokaro, Hazaribagh, Deoghar or anywhere else in the state to the Department of Publication, Civil Lines, Delhi 110054, and the notice publishes in Part IV of the Gazette of India. As reported in July 2025 the Finance Department stopped personal name change notifications from the Jharkhand Government Press with immediate effect, so there is no state alternative to fall back on.

The Eight Steps of a Name File Sent From Jharkhand

Settle the final name first

Letter by letter, with the spacing you want, and then use exactly that everywhere, Aadhaar included. A corrigendum after publication is a second fee and a second wait.

Pick the category, then its proforma

A genuine change of name is change of Name Adult or Major. A wrongly typed spelling is the public notice for a wrongly written name. Twelve categories exist and only one is yours.

Type the proforma in duplicate

Two originals with two witnesses giving signature, full name, address and mobile number on both copies. A change of name is signed in the old name; a public notice is signed in your own name.

Fill the employment field if it is a change of name

The adult proforma asks for the post of the applicant and the office or company name. A student or a homemaker should still complete it rather than leaving it blank, because a blank field brings the file back.

Publish and keep the original paper

One of the daily local leading newspapers, carrying both names in full, the father or husband name and the residential address. The whole original paper goes in the file, not a cutting.

Pay only through BharatKosh

The Non Tax Receipt Portal and nowhere else since October 2018. Select the Department of Publication by name, read the amount the portal shows on the day, pay in your own name and print the e-receipt.

Check every date, then post it yourself

Nothing in the file older than one year. Personally or by post or courier only, never through an agent or advocate. Photocopy everything first, because nothing sent in comes back.

Read the notice, then update in the right order

Check every word the day it publishes, download the e-Gazette copy, and then update the Aadhaar first, because the system leverages it for unique identification, and let the PAN, the bank account and any investment records follow after it in that order. Take the notice to the counselling desk with your Class 10 certificate and Aadhaar, and keep your affidavit with it.

The proforma is where files are lost, and there are twelve to choose from. A wrongly typed spelling filed on the change of name form declares henceforth be known as, claiming a change you never made. The Government charge already paid is not refunded, because BharatKosh payments are non-refundable. You then have six months to make good a shortcoming the Department points out, after which a fresh application with all new documents is required.

What to select on BharatKosh, field by field. Pay to the Department of Publication under the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, and pick the Ministry, the Pay and Accounts Office and the Drawing and Disbursing Officer by their names in the dropdown, never by a code copied off a website. The codes printed for this office on different websites do not agree with each other, and money paid into the wrong head cannot be traced to your file. Read the amount on the portal on the day you pay, because it is revised each financial year.

What a Gazette notice will not do for a spelling error. It will not correct the wrong record by itself; the issuing office still has to. And filed in the wrong category, it can do harm: a spelling error filed as a change of name declares "shall hereafter be known as", claiming a change you never made.
