Migration Certificate Name Correction in Jharkhand
A migration certificate is the paper you need when you move from one board or university to another. After Class 12 with JAC, it usually comes from JAC. After a degree from a university such as Ranchi University, it comes from that university. It copies your name from the issuing body's registration records. If those records have a slip, the migration certificate carries it, and your new college or university may stop your admission until it matches your marksheet. We publish Gazette notices, and we say this first: a spelling slip on a migration certificate needs no Gazette notice.
Five points, in the order you will need them. First, find who issued it: JAC for a school migration, your university for a college one. Second, check whether the marksheet has the same slip; if it does, the marksheet must be corrected first, because the migration certificate follows it. This is our advice. Third, if only the migration certificate is wrong, ask the issuing body for a corrected or fresh one, handing back the old one. Fourth, if your new college will not wait, ask whether it will accept an undertaking or affidavit for now; some universities use one, as reported. Fifth, a spelling slip does not need a Gazette. We publish Gazette notices, and we say this plainly.
What a Migration Certificate Is and Who Issues It in Jharkhand
Be clear about what we could and could not check. We could not reach an official JAC or university page that sets out a fee, a form or a time for a corrected migration certificate. So this page prints no fee and no time limit. What follows is how these papers work, and our advice, based on the papers students send us. Always follow the issuing body's own form.
| Point | What usually applies |
|---|---|
| After JAC Class 10 or 12 | Needed when you join a different board or a university outside JAC. Issued from JAC's records, usually applied for through your school or college |
| After a university degree | Issued by your university, for example Ranchi University, when you join another university |
| Where the name comes from | The issuing body's registration record, the same one your marksheet uses |
| Who can correct it | Only the body that issued it. The new college cannot |
| What the new college does | Puts it beside your marksheet and ID. Some universities ask for a name mismatch undertaking, as reported |
| What that undertaking can mean | At least one university's form asks the student to correct papers within seven working days, and warns of cancellation for false papers, as reported |
| Fee and time | Not verified. Ask the issuing body |
So a migration certificate is rarely wrong on its own. Usually the slip sits in the registration record, and it also shows on the marksheet or certificate. Fix the record, and the migration certificate follows. This is our reading.
Which Migration Certificate Name Mistake You Have
Name problems on a migration certificate fall into a few kinds. This sorting is ours, based on the papers students send us.
| What does not match | What it usually is |
|---|---|
| Migration wrong, marksheet right | A typing slip when the migration certificate was made |
| Migration and marksheet both wrong | The slip is in the registration record |
| Migration matches marksheet, not Aadhaar | The board record and Aadhaar spell you differently |
| Father's name wrong | A slip in the registration record |
| Surname missing | The school registered you without a surname |
| Married name on ID | Your papers are in your maiden name |
| A completely different name | A genuine change of name |
How to Correct the Name on a Migration Certificate
A migration certificate is corrected by the board or university that issued it. The table below is our practical advice.
| Situation | What we usually advise |
|---|---|
| Only the JAC migration is wrong | Apply through your school or college to JAC, with the marksheet and the wrong migration certificate |
| JAC marksheet is wrong too | Correct the record first. See JAC certificate name correction |
| School will not forward it | See school refuses to forward a JAC correction |
| University migration is wrong | Apply to the university's examination or registration section, through your college. See university degree correction |
| CBSE or ICSE migration | See CBSE and ICSE marksheet correction |
| Aadhaar is the wrong one | Fix Aadhaar instead. See JAC marksheet and Aadhaar mismatch |
| Genuine change of name | A Gazette notice, then each body's own correction |
Keep the application short: your name as on the migration certificate, the correct name as on the marksheet, your roll number and registration number, the year, and copies of the marksheet and your ID. Attach the wrong migration certificate itself, since most bodies take it back before giving a new one. Ask for a receiving copy. This is our advice.
If the new college will not wait, give it a copy of your correction application and, if it accepts one, a one-and-the-same affidavit. Whether it admits you meanwhile is its decision, not ours.
Admission, Enrolment and Later Records After a Migration Correction
The name on your migration certificate becomes the name on your new enrolment, and later your degree. This list is our advice.
| Record | What to watch |
|---|---|
| New university enrolment | Ask that it copies the corrected migration, letter by letter |
| Entrance counselling | See JCECEB application form correction |
| Central university admission | See CUET application name mismatch |
| Scholarships | See scholarship and e-Kalyan records |
| College that refuses a change | See college refuses name change |
| Job verification later | See name mismatch at document verification |
| PAN and Aadhaar | See PAN and Aadhaar |
Does a Migration Certificate Name Correction Need a Gazette Notice?
No, for a spelling slip, a missing surname or a parent's name slip. Those are corrected by the board or university that issued the paper. A Gazette notice is for a genuine change of name, and even then each body still corrects its own record.
| Situation | What usually applies |
|---|---|
| Migration typing slip | Issuing body correction. No Gazette |
| Registration record slip | Board or university correction. No Gazette |
| Name after marriage | Marriage certificate. No Gazette |
| Aadhaar slip | Aadhaar update. No Gazette |
| Genuine change of name | A Central Gazette notice, then each paper |

Central Gazette Process for a Name From Jharkhand, and Where It Fits a Migration Certificate
No district in Jharkhand has a gazette counter, so a genuine file goes from Ranchi, Jamshedpur, Dhanbad, Bokaro, Hazaribagh, Deoghar or anywhere else in the state to the Department of Publication, Civil Lines, Delhi 110054, and the notice publishes in Part IV of the Gazette of India. As reported in July 2025 the Finance Department stopped personal name change notifications from the Jharkhand Government Press with immediate effect, so there is no state alternative to fall back on.
The Eight Steps of a Name File Sent From Jharkhand
Settle the final name first
Letter by letter, with the spacing you want, and then use exactly that everywhere, Aadhaar included. A corrigendum after publication is a second fee and a second wait.
Pick the category, then its proforma
A genuine change of name is change of Name Adult or Major. A wrongly typed spelling is the public notice for a wrongly written name. Twelve categories exist and only one is yours.
Type the proforma in duplicate
Two originals with two witnesses giving signature, full name, address and mobile number on both copies. A change of name is signed in the old name; a public notice is signed in your own name.
Fill the employment field if it is a change of name
The adult proforma asks for the post of the applicant and the office or company name. A student or a homemaker should still complete it rather than leaving it blank, because a blank field brings the file back.
Publish and keep the original paper
One of the daily local leading newspapers, carrying both names in full, the father or husband name and the residential address. The whole original paper goes in the file, not a cutting.
Pay only through BharatKosh
The Non Tax Receipt Portal and nowhere else since October 2018. Select the Department of Publication by name, read the amount the portal shows on the day, pay in your own name and print the e-receipt.
Check every date, then post it yourself
Nothing in the file older than one year. Personally or by post or courier only, never through an agent or advocate. Photocopy everything first, because nothing sent in comes back.
Read the notice, then update in the right order
Check every word the day it publishes and download the e-Gazette copy. Then update Aadhaar and PAN, and then your bank account and residence papers, with the original Gazette notification.
The Five Papers in the File, and What Is Checked in Each
| The paper | What is checked in it, clause by clause |
|---|---|
| 1. The proforma, in duplicate | That it is the right category format; the existing full name exactly as your documents carry it; the new full name exactly as settled; the father or husband name; the full address with pin code; the post and office or company name where it is a change of name; the signature in the right name for the category; two witnesses complete with signature, full name, address and mobile number |
| 2. The affidavit or undertaking | The same names and address as the proforma, word for word, with wording matching the category. On Rs 100 non-judicial stamp paper as our safe default |
| 3. The original newspaper | The original paper, not a cutting; the paper name and date of publication visible; both names carried; the father or husband name and residential address; dated within the last year |
| 4. Photographs, identity proof and any category paper | Two self attested passport photographs; self attested identity and address proof matching the proforma address; both witnesses proofs; and, in a public notice file, the attested photocopy of the connected document carrying the error |
| 5. The CD, its certificate and the BharatKosh receipt | MS Word, without the witness portion, with the name typed in place of the signature; the certificate that the hard copy and the soft copy are the same; the forwarding letter to the Controller of Publication with a telephone number and email; the e-receipt |
The posting detail is on the sending the file to Delhi page, the change of name wording on the proforma format page and the public notice wording on the public notice proforma page, the charge by category on the fee and undertaking page, the reasons files come back on the rejection reasons page, and the download on the download page.
What a Migration Certificate Name Correction Costs
The costs are small: an application, the issuing body's fee and perhaps an affidavit. Not a Gazette notice, for a slip. We could not verify the fee JAC or any Jharkhand university charges for a corrected or duplicate migration certificate, so we print no amount.
| Item | What we can and cannot tell you |
|---|---|
| Corrected migration from JAC | Not verified. Ask JAC or your school |
| Corrected migration from a university | Not verified. Ask the university. Pay only against a receipt |
| Marksheet correction, if needed first | As the board or university charges |
| Affidavit | Stamp paper, Rs 100 as our safe default, plus the notary's fee |
| Aadhaar name update | As UIDAI charges at the centre |
| Gazette notice | Not needed for a spelling slip. Paid on BharatKosh, revised each year and non-refundable, if ever needed |
| What we charge | Quoted on the call. For telling you which paper to fix, nothing |
