CKYC and KIN Name Mismatch in Jharkhand: Old Name in the Central KYC Registry and the Fix

You open a new bank account, buy a policy or start a mutual fund, and the form fills itself with your old name. That usually comes from the Central KYC Records Registry (CKYCR), where your KYC sits under a 14-digit KYC Identification Number (KIN). SBI Card's CKYC FAQ explains that "any change in demographic information, such as name or residence address, initiated by a customer with his / her respective bank, insurance company, non-banking financial company, etc. is submitted to CKYCR post updation." So you fix it through one institution you already deal with. For a spelling slip or a marriage surname, that is usually not a Gazette notice. We publish Gazette notices, and we say this first.

14Digits in your KIN, per SBI Card's CKYC FAQ
7Days for the institution to send your update to CKYCR, per RBI
1Institution you need to update through
0Gazette notices usually needed for a slip
Quick answer

Five points, in the order you will need them. First, your CKYC record is only as fresh as your last KYC update. Second, update your KYC at one bank, insurer or NBFC you already deal with, with the corrected document. Third, RBI's rule says that institution must send the update to CKYCR within seven days. Fourth, CKYCR then informs the other institutions linked to you, which should pull the new record. Fifth, fix Aadhaar or PAN first if they carry the slip. We publish Gazette notices, and we say plainly that most CKYC name problems need none.

What CKYC and the KIN Number Are, and Why an Old Name Shows Up

CKYC and KIN name mismatch in Jharkhand, with a KYC form showing an old name, Aadhaar and PAN
A new institution may pull your old KYC from the central registry.

SBI Card's FAQ describes CKYC as "a centralized database of KYC records of customers taking financial services from banks, insurance companies, non-banking financial companies, etc." RBI's KYC Direction, as amended on 6 November 2024, tells institutions to "seek the KYC Identifier from the customer or retrieve the KYC Identifier, if available, from the CKYCR" instead of asking for fresh documents.

CKYC basics from SBI Card's FAQ and RBI's KYC Direction
PointWhat the source says
KIN"a unique 14 digit Identifier generated for an individual on completing KYC formalities"
Who updates itThe change is "initiated by a customer with his / her respective bank, insurance company, non-banking financial company"
New institutionsRetrieve the KIN from CKYCR rather than ask for documents again
When fresh documents are neededWhere there are changes, incomplete information, expired documents or enhanced due diligence
Why the old name comes back. If your CKYC record was made years ago in your old or wrongly spelt name, every new institution that pulls it sees that name. Correcting it at one place, which then updates CKYCR, stops this. This is our reading of the rules above.

Which CKYC Name Mismatch You Have

CKYC name problems usually fall into a few kinds. This sorting is ours.

Kinds of CKYC name mismatch
What does not matchWhat it usually is
CKYC has a spelling slip; Aadhaar and PAN are rightAn old slip in the registry record
CKYC has your maiden nameKYC done before marriage, never updated
Aadhaar or PAN itself has the slipA document to fix first
Two different KINsDuplicate records; ask the institution
You genuinely changed your nameA change that needs its own proof
Aadhaar and PAN first. The institution updating your CKYC will ask for an officially valid document. If Aadhaar or PAN is wrong, fix it first. See our PAN and Aadhaar mismatch page.

How to Fix Each CKYC Name Mismatch

You cannot fix CKYC by yourself on a website, going by the sources we read. You fix it through an institution. Which document to give is our practical advice.

Fixing each kind of CKYC name mismatch
MismatchWhat usually fixes it
Spelling slip in CKYCA KYC update at your bank with Aadhaar or another officially valid document
Maiden name in CKYCA KYC update with the marriage certificate. See name change for married women
Aadhaar or PAN slipFix it first, then update KYC
Duplicate KINAsk the institution to raise it with CKYCR
Genuine change of nameA Central Gazette notice, then Aadhaar and PAN, then KYC
What counts as proof at the bank. For bank KYC, RBI's KYC FAQ accepts an old-name document with a Gazette notification or a State Government marriage certificate. See our bank and insurance KYC page for the officially valid documents and the deemed document rule.

How a CKYC Update Reaches Every Bank, Insurer and Fund

RBI's amended KYC Direction sets out the chain. You update once, and the registry is meant to carry it to the rest.

How a CKYC update flows, per RBI's KYC Direction
StageWhat RBI's Direction says
1. You give updated informationTo a bank, insurer or other regulated entity
2. The institution sends it"within seven days or within such period as may be notified by the Central Government, furnish the updated information to CKYCR"
3. CKYCR tells the others"CKYCR shall thereafter inform electronically all the reporting entities who have dealt with the concerned customer"
4. The others updateThey "retrieve the updated KYC records from CKYCR and update the KYC record maintained by the RE"
Check that it actually reached them. The rule sets the chain, but we cannot promise how fast each system follows it. After a few weeks, check the name at your other bank, insurer or fund house. Where it still shows the old name, give them the same proof. See our demat and mutual fund and NPS pages.

Does a CKYC Name Mismatch Need a Gazette Notice?

Usually not. A spelling slip is fixed with Aadhaar or another officially valid document. A maiden name is fixed with a marriage certificate. A Gazette notice is for a genuine change of name.

When a Gazette notice is relevant to CKYC
SituationWhat usually applies
Spelling slip in CKYCKYC update with Aadhaar. No Gazette
Maiden nameMarriage certificate. No Gazette
Duplicate KINInstitution raises it. No Gazette
Genuine new nameA Central Gazette notice is the clean route
Our commercial interest, stated plainly. We publish Gazette notices. For most CKYC name problems, you do not need one. Where you have genuinely changed your name, it goes in the Gazette of India, Part IV, since the Jharkhand state press stopped personal notices in July 2025, as reported.

How to Fix a CKYC Name Mismatch, Step by Step

1

Note the name a new form showed

Old spelling or maiden name.

2

Check Aadhaar and PAN

Are they right?

3

Fix Aadhaar or PAN first if wrong

At their own offices.

4

Choose one institution you deal with

Your main bank is easiest.

5

Ask for a KYC update

Say the CKYC record has the old name.

6

Give the corrected document

Aadhaar, marriage certificate or Gazette.

7

Ask them to update CKYCR

Within seven days, per RBI.

8

Ask for your KIN

For future forms.

9

Wait a few weeks

CKYCR informs the others.

10

Check your other institutions

Give proof where needed.

The one rule that holds the whole job together. Update once, through one institution. The registry is meant to carry it to the rest.

Central Gazette Process for a Name From Jharkhand, and Where It Fits a CKYC Record

Read this before the rest of this section, because most CKYC name problems never need it. A spelling slip is fixed with Aadhaar; a maiden name with a marriage certificate; a duplicate KIN by the institution. No Gazette notice is needed for those. It is printed in full so you recognise at once when a notice is being sold to someone who does not need one.

No district in Jharkhand has a gazette counter, so a genuine file goes from Ranchi, Jamshedpur, Dhanbad, Bokaro, Hazaribagh, Deoghar or anywhere else in the state to the Department of Publication, Civil Lines, Delhi 110054, and the notice publishes in Part IV of the Gazette of India. As reported in July 2025 the Finance Department stopped personal name change notifications from the Jharkhand Government Press with immediate effect, so there is no state alternative to fall back on.

The Eight Steps of a Name File Sent From Jharkhand

1

Settle the final name first

Letter by letter, with the spacing you want, and then use exactly that everywhere, Aadhaar included. A corrigendum after publication is a second fee and a second wait.

2

Pick the category, then its proforma

A genuine change of name is change of Name Adult or Major. A wrongly typed spelling is the public notice for a wrongly written name. Twelve categories exist and only one is yours.

3

Type the proforma in duplicate

Two originals with two witnesses giving signature, full name, address and mobile number on both copies. A change of name is signed in the old name; a public notice is signed in your own name.

4

Fill the employment field if it is a change of name

The adult proforma asks for the post of the applicant and the office or company name. A student or a homemaker should still complete it rather than leaving it blank, because a blank field brings the file back.

5

Publish and keep the original paper

One of the daily local leading newspapers, carrying both names in full, the father or husband name and the residential address. The whole original paper goes in the file, not a cutting.

6

Pay only through BharatKosh

The Non Tax Receipt Portal and nowhere else since October 2018. Select the Department of Publication by name, read the amount the portal shows on the day, pay in your own name and print the e-receipt.

7

Check every date, then post it yourself

Nothing in the file older than one year. Personally or by post or courier only, never through an agent or advocate. Photocopy everything first, because nothing sent in comes back.

8

Read the notice, then update in the right order

Check every word the day it publishes and download the e-Gazette copy. Then update Aadhaar and PAN, then do a KYC update at one bank so CKYCR carries it.

The Five Papers in the File, and What Is Checked in Each

The five papers of a Central Gazette name file from Jharkhand and what the Department checks in each
The paperWhat is checked in it, clause by clause
1. The proforma, in duplicateThat it is the right category format; the existing full name exactly as your documents carry it; the new full name exactly as settled; the father or husband name; the full address with pin code; the post and office or company name where it is a change of name; the signature in the right name for the category; two witnesses complete with signature, full name, address and mobile number
2. The affidavit or undertakingThe same names and address as the proforma, word for word, with wording matching the category. On Rs 100 non-judicial stamp paper as our safe default
3. The original newspaperThe original paper, not a cutting; the paper name and date of publication visible; both names carried; the father or husband name and residential address; dated within the last year
4. Photographs, identity proof and any category paperTwo self attested passport photographs; self attested identity and address proof matching the proforma address; both witnesses proofs; and, in a public notice file, the attested photocopy of the connected document carrying the error
5. The CD, its certificate and the BharatKosh receiptMS Word, without the witness portion, with the name typed in place of the signature; the certificate that the hard copy and the soft copy are the same; the forwarding letter to the Controller of Publication with a telephone number and email; the e-receipt
The proforma is where files are lost, and there are twelve to choose from. A wrongly typed spelling filed on the change of name form declares henceforth be known as, claiming a change you never made. The Government charge already paid is not refunded, because BharatKosh payments are non-refundable. You then have six months to make good a shortcoming the Department points out, after which a fresh application with all new documents is required.
What to select on BharatKosh, field by field. Pay to the Department of Publication under the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, and pick the Ministry, the Pay and Accounts Office and the Drawing and Disbursing Officer by their names in the dropdown, never by a code copied off a website. The codes printed for this office on different websites do not agree with each other, and money paid into the wrong head cannot be traced to your file. Read the amount on the portal on the day you pay, because it is revised each financial year.
What a Gazette notice will not do for CKYC. It will not change the registry by itself; an institution still sends the update. It links old and new names, and nothing more. Since we publish these notices, the honest version is this: for most CKYC name problems, you need none. Our name correction against name change page explains the categories.

The posting detail is on the sending the file to Delhi page, the change of name wording on the proforma format page and the public notice wording on the public notice proforma page, the charge by category on the fee and undertaking page, the reasons files come back on the rejection reasons page, and the download on the download page.

What Fixing a CKYC Name Mismatch Costs

We did not find a fee for a KYC update in the sources we read, so we print none. The costs are the documents, and usually not a Gazette notice.

Costs connected with a CKYC name mismatch
ItemWhat we can and cannot tell you
KYC update at a bankAsk the branch; we print no figure
Aadhaar or PAN correctionTheir own offices' charges
Marriage certificateSet by the registering office
Affidavit, if askedStamp paper, Rs 100 as our safe default, plus the notary's fee
Gazette noticeOnly for a genuine new name. Paid on BharatKosh, revised each year and non-refundable
What we chargeQuoted on the call. For telling you which record to fix, nothing
The mistake that costs the most. Correcting the name at each new institution one by one, while CKYC keeps the old name. Update once through an institution, so the registry carries it.

Written and maintained by the Jharkhandnamechange.com documentation desk, led by founder Vipin Chauhan, B.Tech LL.B, with 5+ years filing with the Department of Publication. The CKYC rules on this page are quoted from RBI's amendment to the KYC Direction of 6 November 2024, as reproduced by TaxGuru, on the seven days, CKYCR informing others, and retrieving the KYC Identifier, and from SBI Card's CKYC FAQ, on what CKYC and the KIN are and how a change is initiated. Three limits are declared openly on the page itself. First, we could not open CERSAI's own FAQ. Second, we print no update fee. Third, how duplicate KINs are resolved is not covered in the sources we read. We publish Gazette notices, and this page says plainly that most CKYC name problems need none. We are a documentation consultancy and not advocates, not a bank, not CERSAI, and not the Department of Publication. Who we are is on the about page.
