Name Change in NPS Account in Jharkhand: Form S2, Documents and Who Does It

Your National Pension System account, your PRAN, holds your name, and you usually cannot change it yourself online. Protean's own procedure for Points of Presence says that if a subscriber registered through Aadhaar, CKYC or DigiLocker, "then only CRA users will be allowed to update the Subscriber's Name." The change goes on Form S2, the "Request For Change/Correction in Subscriber Master Details", submitted "at the Nodal Office POP/POP-SP". The papers are fixed too: a "Self-attested gazette copy or the self-attested copy of marriage certificate", proof of identity in the old name and in the new name, and "Proof of bank account with new name". Five points, in the order you will need them. First, find your route. An ordinary subscriber under the All Citizen model goes to the Point of Presence, usually the bank or office where the account was opened. A Government employee goes through the nodal office, where the drawing and disbursing officer starts the request. An NPS Lite subscriber goes through the aggregator. Which NPS Name Change Route Is Yours: POP, Nodal Office or Aggregator

NPS is one system, but who changes your name depends on how you joined it. Protean, one of the Central Recordkeeping Agencies, publishes separate procedures for each group. Knock on the wrong door and you lose a week.

How to find your route in one minute. Look at your PRAN card or your first NPS statement. If a bank or post office opened it, it is a POP account. If your salary office deducts your contribution, it is a Government sector account and your office handles it. If you are not sure, ask where your contribution is deducted. Documents Required for a Name Change in NPS

Protean's procedure for Points of Presence, version 1.2 dated 2 April 2025, lists the papers for a subscriber name change. They are the same idea everywhere: proof of the change, identity in both names, and a bank account in the new name.

You need identity proof in the new name before you start. The procedure asks for POI in the new name as well as the old. So update Aadhaar or PAN first, then your bank, and only then file Form S2. Why the portal will not let you

Can You Change Your Name in NPS Online Yourself

Many NPS details can be changed online. The name usually cannot. Protean's procedure for Points of Presence says: "If the subscriber is registered under MYNPS through Aadhaar, CKYC, or Digi locker then only CRA users will be allowed to update the Subscriber's Name." It applies the same restriction to subscribers registered through eNPS.

So if you opened your account online, your POP cannot change the name either; it goes to the Central Recordkeeping Agency itself. That is not a refusal. It is simply a different desk, and your POP should forward it.

What to say at the POP if they say "we cannot". They may be right, for an account registered online. Ask them to forward your Form S2 and documents to the CRA, and ask for a written acknowledgement. For salaried Government employees

NPS Name Change for Government Employees Through the Nodal Office

For a Government employee, Protean's procedure for nodal offices, version 1.4 dated 31 December 2025, sets out a chain. The drawing and disbursing officer initiates, the pay and accounts office verifies, and the principal accounts office authorises. And it puts one duty on your office in plain words: "It is the responsibility of the office to check veracity of documents as provided by the subscriber. Also, the office has to ensure that the name to be updated is as per service record of the office."

Your service record decides it. Because the office must ensure the name "is as per service record", correct the service book first. An NPS request in a name your service book does not yet carry will be sent back. For the service book route, see name change for Government employees.

The order that works

Update Your Bank Before NPS, and What Happens on a Second Name Change

Every NPS procedure we read asks for "Proof of bank account with new name". So the bank has to move before NPS can. Your NPS money is paid into that account at exit, and a name that does not match it is a problem you do not want at retirement.

For a Government employee changing the name a second time, the nodal office procedure adds a step: the principal accounts office sends a scanned request letter to the CRA, which verifies "through PAN or bank penny-drop verification". So PAN and bank must both carry the new name before you ask.

Check your nominee at the same time. Form S2 also covers other subscriber details. While you are changing the name, check that your nominee's name and relationship are right, especially after marriage. A nominee problem found after a death is far harder to fix. The one rule that holds the whole job together. NPS comes last. It asks for proof in the new name from your identity documents, your bank and, for a Government employee, your service book. Get those right first, and Form S2 goes through in one go.

Central Gazette Process for a Name From Jharkhand, and Where It Fits an NPS Name Change

Read this before the rest of this section, because after marriage NPS may not need a Gazette notice. Protean's procedures accept a "Self-attested gazette copy or the self-attested copy of marriage certificate". So for a surname change after a registered marriage, the certificate may be enough. This process earns its cost where the name changed for another reason, where the Government sector procedure asks for a "Self-attested gazette copy" for a change of name, or where there is no marriage certificate. It is printed in full so you can judge which situation you are in, and so you recognise at once when a notice is being sold to somebody who does not need one.

No district in Jharkhand has a gazette counter, so a genuine file goes from Ranchi, Jamshedpur, Dhanbad, Bokaro, Hazaribagh, Deoghar or anywhere else in the state to the Department of Publication, Civil Lines, Delhi 110054, and the notice publishes in Part IV of the Gazette of India. As reported in July 2025 the Finance Department stopped personal name change notifications from the Jharkhand Government Press with immediate effect, so there is no state alternative to fall back on.

The Eight Steps of a Name File Sent From Jharkhand

Settle the final name first

Letter by letter, with the spacing you want, and then use exactly that everywhere, Aadhaar included. A corrigendum after publication is a second fee and a second wait.

Pick the category, then its proforma

A genuine change of name is change of Name Adult or Major. A wrongly typed spelling is the public notice for a wrongly written name. Twelve categories exist and only one is yours.

Type the proforma in duplicate

Two originals with two witnesses giving signature, full name, address and mobile number on both copies. A change of name is signed in the old name; a public notice is signed in your own name.

Fill the employment field if it is a change of name

The adult proforma asks for the post of the applicant and the office or company name. A student or a homemaker should still complete it rather than leaving it blank, because a blank field brings the file back.

Publish and keep the original paper

One of the daily local leading newspapers, carrying both names in full, the father or husband name and the residential address. The whole original paper goes in the file, not a cutting.

Pay only through BharatKosh

The Non Tax Receipt Portal and nowhere else since October 2018. Select the Department of Publication by name, read the amount the portal shows on the day, pay in your own name and print the e-receipt.

Check every date, then post it yourself

Nothing in the file older than one year. Personally or by post or courier only, never through an agent or advocate. Photocopy everything first, because nothing sent in comes back.

Read the notice, then update in the right order

Check every word the day it publishes, download the e-Gazette copy, and then update the Aadhaar first, because the system leverages it for unique identification, and let the PAN, the bank account and any investment records follow after it in that order. Take the notice to your bank and then to your POP or nodal office with Form S2, because NPS asks for a "Self-attested gazette copy".

The Five Papers in the File, and What Is Checked in Each

The proforma is where files are lost, and there are twelve to choose from. A wrongly typed spelling filed on the change of name form declares henceforth be known as, claiming a change you never made. The Government charge already paid is not refunded, because BharatKosh payments are non-refundable. You then have six months to make good a shortcoming the Department points out, after which a fresh application with all new documents is required.

What to select on BharatKosh, field by field. Pay to the Department of Publication under the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, and pick the Ministry, the Pay and Accounts Office and the Drawing and Disbursing Officer by their names in the dropdown, never by a code copied off a website. The codes printed for this office on different websites do not agree with each other, and money paid into the wrong head cannot be traced to your file. Read the amount on the portal on the day you pay, because it is revised each financial year.

What a Gazette notice will not do for NPS on its own. It will not change your PRAN by itself; Form S2 still has to go through your POP or nodal office. It will not replace identity proof in the new name, a bank account in the new name, or, for a Government employee, a service record in the new name.
