UPI Name Mismatch in Jharkhand: Why UPI Shows a Different Name and How to Fix It at Your Bank
You pay someone by UPI and a different name pops up. Or people paying you see your name spelt wrong, or in your name before marriage, and hesitate. From 30 June 2025, NPCI required UPI apps to show the "Ultimate beneficiary's name, as per bank records", and to drop names taken from QR codes or set by users, as reported. So the name on UPI now comes from your bank account. Changing your app profile or UPI ID will not change it. Changing the name in your bank account will. We publish Gazette notices, and we say this first: a spelling slip in a bank name needs no Gazette notice.
Five points, in the order you will need them. First, see which bank account your UPI ID is linked to; the name shown is that account's name. Second, match PAN and Aadhaar, then ask that bank to correct the account name. Third, wait for the bank to update, then check the name in UPI again; this is our advice. Fourth, if you run a shop, the QR name payers see also follows the bank account. Fifth, a spelling slip here does not need a Gazette. We publish Gazette notices, and we say this plainly.
What the NPCI UPI Name Rule of 2025 Says
NPCI runs UPI. The points below come from reports of its 2025 rule. We could not open the NPCI circular itself, so they are as reported. Where a point is our own reading, we say so.

Put simply: the name on UPI is now your bank's name for you. If the bank has it wrong, UPI shows it wrong, and no app setting can hide it. This is our reading.

How to Change the Name Shown on UPI
Because UPI now shows the bank's name, the fix is at the bank, not in the app. The table below is our practical advice.

Changing your UPI ID, your profile name in the app, or even the app itself will not change what payers see. The name travels from the bank. Spend your time at the branch or in net banking, not in app settings. This is our reading.
After the bank updates the account name, give it a few days, then ask a family member to start a small UPI payment to you and see what name shows. If it is still old, ask the bank whether the update reached the system that feeds UPI. This is our advice.
Shop QR Codes, Paying Safely and Other Records Linked to UPI
Shopkeepers in Jharkhand often take payments on a QR linked to a personal account. Payers now see the account holder's name, not the shop name. This list is our advice.

Does a UPI Name Mismatch Need a Gazette Notice?
No, for a spelling slip, initials or a name after marriage. Those are fixed at the bank, with PAN, Aadhaar and a marriage certificate where needed. A Gazette notice is for a genuine change of name, and even then the bank still needs a request.

Central Gazette Process for a Name From Jharkhand, and Where It Fits a UPI Name
No district in Jharkhand has a gazette counter, so a genuine file goes from Ranchi, Jamshedpur, Dhanbad, Bokaro, Hazaribagh, Deoghar or anywhere else in the state to the Department of Publication, Civil Lines, Delhi 110054, and the notice publishes in Part IV of the Gazette of India. As reported in July 2025 the Finance Department stopped personal name change notifications from the Jharkhand Government Press with immediate effect, so there is no state alternative to fall back on.
The Eight Steps of a Name File Sent From Jharkhand
Settle the final name first
Letter by letter, with the spacing you want, and then use exactly that everywhere, Aadhaar included. A corrigendum after publication is a second fee and a second wait.
Pick the category, then its proforma
A genuine change of name is change of Name Adult or Major. A wrongly typed spelling is the public notice for a wrongly written name. Twelve categories exist and only one is yours.
Type the proforma in duplicate
Two originals with two witnesses giving signature, full name, address and mobile number on both copies. A change of name is signed in the old name; a public notice is signed in your own name.
Fill the employment field if it is a change of name
The adult proforma asks for the post of the applicant and the office or company name. A student or a homemaker should still complete it rather than leaving it blank, because a blank field brings the file back.
Publish and keep the original paper
One of the daily local leading newspapers, carrying both names in full, the father or husband name and the residential address. The whole original paper goes in the file, not a cutting.
Pay only through BharatKosh
The Non Tax Receipt Portal and nowhere else since October 2018. Select the Department of Publication by name, read the amount the portal shows on the day, pay in your own name and print the e-receipt.
Check every date, then post it yourself
Nothing in the file older than one year. Personally or by post or courier only, never through an agent or advocate. Photocopy everything first, because nothing sent in comes back.
Read the notice, then update in the right order
Check every word the day it publishes and download the e-Gazette copy. Then update Aadhaar and PAN, and then your bank account, which UPI reads its name from, with the original Gazette notification.

What a UPI Name Correction Costs in Jharkhand
The costs are small: perhaps a PAN or Aadhaar update fee and an affidavit. Changing the name in the UPI app costs nothing because it does nothing. Not a Gazette notice, for a slip.
