Credit Card Name Mismatch in Jharkhand: Card Name, KYC, Credit Report and Name After Marriage
A credit card carries your name in three places: printed on the card, in the card issuer's KYC record, and in your credit report, which the issuer feeds under your PAN. When these do not agree, you may see a failed online payment check, a card blocked for re-KYC, or a credit report that shows two of you. The RBI's card rules say KYC instructions "shall be strictly adhered to in respect of all cards issued". So the fix starts with PAN and Aadhaar, then a written request to the card issuer. We publish Gazette notices, and we say this first: a spelling slip on a credit card needs no Gazette notice.
Five points, in the order you will need them. First, match PAN and Aadhaar, since the card issuer's KYC and your credit report both lean on them. Second, write to the card issuer through its official channel, with both IDs, asking it to update your name and send a new card; this is our advice. Third, after marriage, decide which name to use, update PAN and Aadhaar if you change it, then the card. Fourth, check your credit report for a second record under an old spelling. Fifth, a spelling slip here does not need a Gazette. We publish Gazette notices, and we say this plainly.
What the RBI Credit Card Rules Say
The rules below come from the RBI's Master Direction on Credit Card and Debit Card, Issuance and Conduct, 2022, as updated. Where a point is our own reading, we say so.
| Point | What the Master Direction says |
|---|---|
| KYC | Paragraph 29: KYC instructions "shall be strictly adhered to in respect of all cards issued" |
| Closing a card | Paragraph 8(a): a closure request is honoured within seven working days, or the issuer pays Rs 500 per calendar day of delay |
| Unused new card | Paragraph 6(a)(vi): if not activated for more than 30 days, the issuer seeks OTP consent |
| Add-on cards | Paragraph 7(e): issued only to persons the principal cardholder names; liability is the principal cardholder's |
| Credit report after settling | Paragraph 12(b): the issuer updates the credit bureau within 30 days of settlement |
| Complaints | Paragraph 26(a): no satisfactory reply in 30 days, and you may go to the RBI Ombudsman |
The Master Direction does not set out a separate process for changing a name. A name change is a KYC update, handled like any other change of your details. This is our reading.
Which Credit Card Name Case You Have
Credit card name problems fall into a few kinds. This sorting is ours, based on the papers people send us.
| What does not match | What it usually is |
|---|---|
| Name on the card is short | Space on the card is limited, so a long name may be shortened |
| Card issuer's record differs from PAN | A slip when the application was typed |
| PAN differs from Aadhaar | Initials on one, full name on the other |
| Name changed after marriage | Card in the old name, IDs in the new, or the other way |
| Two records in the credit report | Loans or cards under two spellings |
| Add-on card holder's name wrong | A slip on the add-on application |
| Genuine change of name | A deliberate new name, after the card was issued |
How to Change or Correct the Name on a Credit Card
We found no RBI process just for changing a card name. What follows is how a KYC update usually works with a card issuer. The table below is our practical advice.
| Situation | What we usually advise |
|---|---|
| Name on the card is short | Usually no problem if the issuer's record is right. Ask if a payment check fails |
| Card issuer's record differs from PAN | A written request with PAN and Aadhaar, asking for a KYC update |
| PAN differs from Aadhaar | Correct whichever is wrong. See PAN name change |
| Name changed after marriage | Update PAN and Aadhaar first, then the card. See name change after marriage |
| Two records in the credit report | Raise a dispute with the credit bureau. See credit report name mismatch |
| Two spellings, one person | A one-and-the-same affidavit may help |
| Genuine change of name | A Gazette notice, then PAN and Aadhaar, then the card issuer |
Most card issuers take a name change as a KYC update: you send the new PAN and Aadhaar through the app, net banking or a branch, and they send a new card. Ask for the request number and keep it. If nothing happens in 30 days, the RBI rules let you go to the Ombudsman. This is our advice.
If your card is linked to a bank account with the same bank, update the account name at the same time, so autopay and statements agree. See our bank records name change page. This is our advice.
Credit Report, Add-On Cards and Closing an Old Credit Card
A credit card touches more than the card itself. This list is our advice, with the RBI points marked.
| Record | What to watch |
|---|---|
| Credit report | One name under one PAN. See credit report |
| Add-on cards | The principal cardholder names the add-on holder and is liable, per RBI paragraph 7(e) |
| Old card in an old name | Close it in writing. The issuer must close within seven working days, per RBI paragraph 8(a) |
| Income tax filing | Your PAN name matters there too. See income tax e-filing |
| Loans later | See home loan and gold loan |
| Bank KYC | See bank and insurance KYC |
Does a Credit Card Name Mismatch Need a Gazette Notice?
No, for a spelling slip, a short name on the card, or a name after marriage. Those are fixed with PAN, Aadhaar and a KYC update at the card issuer, with a marriage certificate where needed. A Gazette notice is for a genuine change of name, and even then the issuer still needs a request.
| Situation | What usually applies |
|---|---|
| Short name on the card | Usually nothing needed. No Gazette |
| Issuer's record differs from PAN | KYC update. No Gazette |
| Name after marriage | Marriage certificate. No Gazette |
| Two records in the credit report | Bureau dispute. No Gazette |
| Genuine change of name | A Central Gazette notice, then PAN and Aadhaar, then the card issuer |

Central Gazette Process for a Name From Jharkhand, and Where It Fits a Credit Card
No district in Jharkhand has a gazette counter, so a genuine file goes from Ranchi, Jamshedpur, Dhanbad, Bokaro, Hazaribagh, Deoghar or anywhere else in the state to the Department of Publication, Civil Lines, Delhi 110054, and the notice publishes in Part IV of the Gazette of India. As reported in July 2025 the Finance Department stopped personal name change notifications from the Jharkhand Government Press with immediate effect, so there is no state alternative to fall back on.
The Eight Steps of a Name File Sent From Jharkhand
Settle the final name first
Letter by letter, with the spacing you want, and then use exactly that everywhere, Aadhaar included. A corrigendum after publication is a second fee and a second wait.
Pick the category, then its proforma
A genuine change of name is change of Name Adult or Major. A wrongly typed spelling is the public notice for a wrongly written name. Twelve categories exist and only one is yours.
Type the proforma in duplicate
Two originals with two witnesses giving signature, full name, address and mobile number on both copies. A change of name is signed in the old name; a public notice is signed in your own name.
Fill the employment field if it is a change of name
The adult proforma asks for the post of the applicant and the office or company name. A student or a homemaker should still complete it rather than leaving it blank, because a blank field brings the file back.
Publish and keep the original paper
One of the daily local leading newspapers, carrying both names in full, the father or husband name and the residential address. The whole original paper goes in the file, not a cutting.
Pay only through BharatKosh
The Non Tax Receipt Portal and nowhere else since October 2018. Select the Department of Publication by name, read the amount the portal shows on the day, pay in your own name and print the e-receipt.
Check every date, then post it yourself
Nothing in the file older than one year. Personally or by post or courier only, never through an agent or advocate. Photocopy everything first, because nothing sent in comes back.
Read the notice, then update in the right order
Check every word the day it publishes and download the e-Gazette copy. Then update Aadhaar and PAN, and then ask your card issuer for a KYC update, with the original Gazette notification.
The Five Papers in the File, and What Is Checked in Each
| The paper | What is checked in it, clause by clause |
|---|---|
| 1. The proforma, in duplicate | That it is the right category format; the existing full name exactly as your documents carry it; the new full name exactly as settled; the father or husband name; the full address with pin code; the post and office or company name where it is a change of name; the signature in the right name for the category; two witnesses complete with signature, full name, address and mobile number |
| 2. The affidavit or undertaking | The same names and address as the proforma, word for word, with wording matching the category. On Rs 100 non-judicial stamp paper as our safe default |
| 3. The original newspaper | The original paper, not a cutting; the paper name and date of publication visible; both names carried; the father or husband name and residential address; dated within the last year |
| 4. Photographs, identity proof and any category paper | Two self attested passport photographs; self attested identity and address proof matching the proforma address; both witnesses proofs; and, in a public notice file, the attested photocopy of the connected document carrying the error |
| 5. The CD, its certificate and the BharatKosh receipt | MS Word, without the witness portion, with the name typed in place of the signature; the certificate that the hard copy and the soft copy are the same; the forwarding letter to the Controller of Publication with a telephone number and email; the e-receipt |
The posting detail is on the sending the file to Delhi page, the change of name wording on the proforma format page and the public notice wording on the public notice proforma page, the charge by category on the fee and undertaking page, the reasons files come back on the rejection reasons page, and the download on the download page.
What a Credit Card Name Change Costs in Jharkhand

| PAN correction | As the PAN service charges. See our PAN page |

| Gazette notice | Only if you choose it for a genuine new name. Paid on BharatKosh, revised each year and non-refundable |
