Name Mismatch in CIBIL Credit Report in Jharkhand: Where It Comes From and How to Fix It
A wrong or old name on your CIBIL report can hold up a loan, a credit card or a job check. The first thing to know is that CIBIL did not choose that name. Your lenders reported it. CIBIL says plainly that "no correction, deletion or addition to any information in the database can be made by CIBIL without confirmation from the concerned bank/financial institution." So the fix has two ends: the lender's record, and a dispute with the credit bureau. The dispute is free: "Dispute Resolution is a FREE service offered by CIBIL." And the Reserve Bank has put a clock on it. Under its credit information reporting directions, a complainant is "entitled to a compensation of ₹100 per calendar day" if the complaint "is not resolved within a period of thirty (30) calendar days." This page shows the order that works.
Five points, in the order you will need them. First, find which lender reported the wrong name. Your credit report shows each account and its lender; the name comes from their records. Second, fix the name with that lender first, using the Reserve Bank's KYC rule: an officially valid document in the earlier name along with a Gazette notification or a State Government marriage certificate. Third, raise a dispute with CIBIL. Log in to MyCIBIL, open your report and choose "Raise a Dispute"; personal details sit under "Profile Information". It is free. CIBIL forwards it to the lender, because it cannot change data "without confirmation from the concerned bank/financial institution." Fourth, know the clock. Under the Reserve Bank's Master Direction on credit information reporting of 6 January 2025, the lender must send updated information within 21 calendar days, the complaint must be resolved within 30 calendar days, compensation is ₹100 per calendar day after that, and it is credited to your bank account "within five (5) working days of the resolution". If rejected, "the reasons for rejection shall also be provided." Fifth, check the other bureaus too. Each credit information company keeps its own report, so a fix at CIBIL does not mean the others are fixed.
Where the Name in Your CIBIL Credit Report Comes From
A credit bureau does not meet you or check your Aadhaar. It builds your report from what banks and lenders send it about each loan and card. If one lender holds your old name, or a misspelling, that is what appears. Two lenders with two spellings can even show you under two names in one report.
| Why the name is wrong | Where the fix sits |
|---|---|
| A lender still has your maiden or old name | That lender. Update KYC there, then dispute |
| A lender misspelt your name when the loan was opened | That lender, with a correction request |
| An initial on one account, the full name on another | Each lender that holds the short form |
| An account that is not yours at all | A dispute under account information, not a name correction |
| Your name changed after all loans were closed | Ask the lender whether it will update a closed account; the report may simply show the name you had then |
Fix the Name With Your Bank or Lender Before You Dispute With CIBIL
CIBIL will forward your dispute to the lender, and the lender will check it against its own KYC record. If that record still carries the old name, the answer may simply confirm the old name. So correct the lender's KYC first.
For a bank, the Reserve Bank's KYC FAQs accept "an OVD containing the earlier name along with a copy of the Gazette notification, or marriage certificate issued by the State Government, as applicable, indicating the change in name." The Reserve Bank's KYC rules apply to the lenders it regulates, not only to banks. See bank request letter.
| Give the lender | Why |
|---|---|
| An officially valid document | Passport, driving licence, Aadhaar proof, Voter's Identity Card, NREGA job card or NPR letter. Not a PAN card |
| The Gazette notification or State Government marriage certificate | Where the name genuinely changed |
| A spelling correction affidavit | Where it is only a misspelling, to explain it. See spelling correction affidavit |
| The loan account number | So the correction reaches the record reported to the bureau |
| A written request asking them to update the bureau | Ask in so many words, and keep the acknowledgement |
How to Raise a Name Correction Dispute With CIBIL
CIBIL runs its disputes online. You log in to MyCIBIL, open your report and choose "Raise a Dispute". CIBIL groups disputes into "Account Information," "Profile Information," and "Enquiry Information." A wrong name is a profile information dispute.
Two sentences from CIBIL settle most questions. "Dispute Resolution is a FREE service offered by CIBIL. Consumers are not required to pay a fee for rectifying discrepancies or updating their credit information." And: "Any dispute is to be resolved within 30 days from date of receipt by CIBIL or banks/financial institutions as per RBI."
| The point | In CIBIL's words, or what it means |
|---|---|
| Where | MyCIBIL, "Raise a Dispute" |
| Which category | "Profile Information" for a name |
| Cost | "a FREE service" |
| Who decides | The lender. CIBIL cannot change data "without confirmation from the concerned bank/financial institution" |
| Time | "within 30 days", as per the Reserve Bank |
RBI Rule on Credit Report Complaints: 30 Days and Rs 100 a Day Compensation
The Reserve Bank's Master Direction on credit information reporting, dated 6 January 2025, puts a clock on complaints about credit information. We read it on a copy published by Taxguru, and quote paragraph 17 as it appears there.
| The rule | In the direction's words |
|---|---|
| Compensation after 30 days | The complainant "shall be entitled to a compensation of ₹100 per calendar day in case their complaint is not resolved within a period of thirty (30) calendar days", paragraph 17.1 |
| The lender's share of the time | The lender pays if it "failed to send updated credit information... within twenty-one (21) calendar days", paragraph 17.2 |
| Reasons for rejection | "In cases of rejection, the reasons for rejection shall also be provided", paragraph 17.4 |
| How you are paid | "credited to the bank account of the complainant within five (5) working days of the resolution", paragraph 17.11 |
Name Mismatch in Experian, Equifax and CRIF High Mark Reports
CIBIL is the name people know, but it is not the only credit information company. Experian, Equifax and CRIF High Mark also keep credit reports. Each keeps its own copy, built from what lenders send it. A lender may pull any of them when you apply.
| What to do | Why |
|---|---|
| Check your name in each report | A fix at one bureau is not a fix at the others |
| Fix the lender's record once | The bureaus get your name from the lenders, so a corrected lender record is what they receive |
| Raise a dispute where the name is still wrong | Each bureau runs its own dispute process |
| The same RBI clock applies | The compensation rule covers credit information companies, not only CIBIL |
How to Correct Your Name in a CIBIL Credit Report, Step by Step
Get your credit report and read it account by account
Note which lender shows which spelling.
Get proof of the right name
A Gazette notification or State Government marriage certificate for a change; an affidavit for a misspelling.
Update your KYC with each lender
With an officially valid document. Not a PAN card.
List every loan and card account number
So the correction reaches the reported record.
Ask each lender, in writing, to update the bureaus
Keep the acknowledgement.
Raise a dispute on MyCIBIL
"Raise a Dispute", under "Profile Information". Free.
Note the date and keep the confirmation
The 30 days run from the filing.
Wait for the lender's confirmation
CIBIL cannot change it without the lender.
If rejected, read the reasons
The directions say "the reasons for rejection shall also be provided".
Check the other bureaus
Experian, Equifax and CRIF High Mark each keep their own report.
Central Gazette Process for a Name From Jharkhand, and Where It Fits a Credit Report Name
No district in Jharkhand has a gazette counter, so a genuine file goes from Ranchi, Jamshedpur, Dhanbad, Bokaro, Hazaribagh, Deoghar or anywhere else in the state to the Department of Publication, Civil Lines, Delhi 110054, and the notice publishes in Part IV of the Gazette of India. As reported in July 2025 the Finance Department stopped personal name change notifications from the Jharkhand Government Press with immediate effect, so there is no state alternative to fall back on.
The Eight Steps of a Name File Sent From Jharkhand
Settle the final name first
Letter by letter, with the spacing you want, and then use exactly that everywhere, Aadhaar included. A corrigendum after publication is a second fee and a second wait.
Pick the category, then its proforma
A genuine change of name is change of Name Adult or Major. A wrongly typed spelling is the public notice for a wrongly written name. Twelve categories exist and only one is yours.
Type the proforma in duplicate
Two originals with two witnesses giving signature, full name, address and mobile number on both copies. A change of name is signed in the old name; a public notice is signed in your own name.
Fill the employment field if it is a change of name
The adult proforma asks for the post of the applicant and the office or company name. A student or a homemaker should still complete it rather than leaving it blank, because a blank field brings the file back.
Publish and keep the original paper
One of the daily local leading newspapers, carrying both names in full, the father or husband name and the residential address. The whole original paper goes in the file, not a cutting.
Pay only through BharatKosh
The Non Tax Receipt Portal and nowhere else since October 2018. Select the Department of Publication by name, read the amount the portal shows on the day, pay in your own name and print the e-receipt.
Check every date, then post it yourself
Nothing in the file older than one year. Personally or by post or courier only, never through an agent or advocate. Photocopy everything first, because nothing sent in comes back.
Read the notice, then update in the right order
Check every word the day it publishes, download the e-Gazette copy, and then update the Aadhaar first, because the system leverages it for unique identification, and let the PAN, the bank account and any investment records follow after it in that order. Take the notice to each lender with an officially valid document, then raise the credit bureau dispute.
The Five Papers in the File, and What Is Checked in Each
| The paper | What is checked in it, clause by clause |
|---|---|
| 1. The proforma, in duplicate | That it is the right category format; the existing full name exactly as your documents carry it; the new full name exactly as settled; the father or husband name; the full address with pin code; the post and office or company name where it is a change of name; the signature in the right name for the category; two witnesses complete with signature, full name, address and mobile number |
| 2. The affidavit or undertaking | The same names and address as the proforma, word for word, with wording matching the category. On Rs 100 non-judicial stamp paper as our safe default |
| 3. The original newspaper | The original paper, not a cutting; the paper name and date of publication visible; both names carried; the father or husband name and residential address; dated within the last year |
| 4. Photographs, identity proof and any category paper | Two self attested passport photographs; self attested identity and address proof matching the proforma address; both witnesses proofs; and, in a public notice file, the attested photocopy of the connected document carrying the error |
| 5. The CD, its certificate and the BharatKosh receipt | MS Word, without the witness portion, with the name typed in place of the signature; the certificate that the hard copy and the soft copy are the same; the forwarding letter to the Controller of Publication with a telephone number and email; the e-receipt |
The posting detail is on the sending the file to Delhi page, the change of name wording on the proforma format page and the public notice wording on the public notice proforma page, the charge by category on the fee and undertaking page, the reasons files come back on the rejection reasons page, and the download on the download page.
