GST carries two names and only one is yours to choose • Udyam has no name field at all • And one change cannot be amended, ever

Name Change in Udyam and GST Registration in Jharkhand

Here is the thing nobody tells a small business owner in Ranchi or Jamshedpur: on these two registrations you do not type your own name. In GST there are two separate names on your certificate, the Legal Name of Business and the Trade Name, and they behave completely differently. In Udyam there is no name for you to edit at all, because the Ministry's own notification links your details to your PAN, your GSTIN and your Income Tax return, and the portal says the linked details are "taken automatically from Government data bases". So before you hunt for a form, find out which of the two GST names you actually mean, and understand that Udyam will only ever show what PAN and GST already say.

2Names on your GST certificate, not one
15Days to apply for a GST amendment
0Name fields you can edit in Udyam
1Change that cannot be amended at all
Quick answer

Decide which name you mean, because GST has two and Udyam has none. The Trade Name is the name your shop or firm trades under, and you chose it. Changing it is the easy case. The Legal Name of Business is the name tied to the PAN the registration was taken on, and that is a different matter entirely. The GST portal's own guidance treats the "Name of the Business, (Legal Name) if there is no change in PAN" as a core field, and says that "Amendment to Core fields require approval by the Tax Official", with the application auto approved after a stipulated time if the officer does not act. Either way, the guidance says to "submit the application for Amendment of Registration within 15 days from the date of the particular change". Now the wall. The same guidance states that an "Application for Amendment of Registration cannot be filed when there is: Change in PAN". So if the name is changing because the PAN is changing, there is no amendment available at all and a fresh registration is required. Relocation to another State and a change of constitution that changes the PAN sit behind the same wall. Udyam is simpler and stricter. The Ministry of MSME notification S.O. 2119(E) of 26 June 2020 links investment to the Income Tax Return and turnover to the Income Tax Act or the CGST Act and the GSTIN, the portal requires PAN and GSTIN since 1 April 2021, and says the linked details are "taken automatically from Government data bases". There is nothing to correct in Udyam by hand. Fix PAN, then GST, then update Udyam. And do update it, because the notification says failure to update "will render the enterprise liable for suspension of its status".

The Two Names on a GST Certificate, and Why People Ask to Change the Wrong One

Name change in Udyam and GST registration in Jharkhand
Two names sit on the certificate. One you chose, one your PAN chose for you.

Take your registration certificate out and read the top of it. There are two name lines, and almost every enquiry we get begins by mixing them up. Sorting this out takes two minutes and it decides everything that follows.

The two names on a GST registration and how each one behaves
The nameWhere it comes from, and how hard it is to change
Trade Name, the name you trade underYou chose this one. Sharma Traders, Ranchi Electricals, whatever is painted on the board. It is the name customers know. Changing it is the straightforward case, and it does not disturb your PAN or your registration number
Legal Name of Business, the name behind itYour PAN chose this one. For a proprietor it is the proprietor's own name as the PAN carries it; for a company or firm it is the entity name on its PAN. The GST guidance treats amending it as a core field and only "if there is no change in PAN"
What most people actually mean when they say the GST name is wrongIn our experience, a proprietor usually means the Legal Name, because their own name is misspelt or is in a form their Aadhaar does not carry. A firm usually means the Trade Name, because the business has been rebranded. Two different jobs, two different levels of difficulty
The GSTIN itselfNot a name and not editable. It is built around your PAN, which is exactly why a PAN change breaks the whole registration rather than amending it
The authorised signatory's nameA third name on the record, and a separate field again. Adding or removing a stakeholder is treated as a core field, so do not fold it into a request about the business name
The name on your bank account linked to GSTAnother record, with its own route on our bank records page. It matters at refund time rather than at registration, and a mismatch there surfaces when money is due to you
The sentence that saves a proprietor a wasted month. If you are a proprietor and your own name is wrong on the GST certificate, the problem is almost never in GST. The Legal Name comes from your PAN, so the real job is on our PAN card name change page, and GST follows afterwards. Applying to amend GST while the PAN still carries the old spelling is work you will do twice.
How to tell in one look. Compare the Legal Name on the certificate against your PAN card, letter by letter. If they match, your problem is the Trade Name and it is a small job. If they do not match, something odd has happened at registration and that is worth asking about specifically, because the Legal Name is supposed to have come from the PAN database in the first place.

GST Core and Non-Core Fields, the Fifteen Day Limit, and the One Change You Cannot Make

This is the part written down in the GST portal's own guidance rather than taken from practice, so it is worth reading slowly. It answers three questions: who approves your change, how long you have, and what simply cannot be done.

What the GST portal guidance provides about amendment of registration, core fields and the limits
What the guidance saysWhat it means for you
Core fields include the "Name of the Business, (Legal Name) if there is no change in PAN", adding or removing stakeholders, and the principal or additional place of business, other than a change of StateSo the business legal name is a core field. Note the condition buried in that line: only if there is no change in PAN. That five word qualifier is the whole difference between an amendment and starting again
"Amendment to Core fields require approval by the Tax Official. If no action is taken by tax official, then application is auto approved after stipulated time"A core amendment is not instant. It goes to an officer. The useful half of that sentence is the second half: silence eventually works in your favour, and the application is auto approved after the stipulated time
Non-core fields are all the other registration detailsWhich is why a Trade Name question, a contact detail or a minor particular moves far faster than a Legal Name question. Know which bucket you are in before you predict how long it will take
"Submit the application for Amendment of Registration within 15 days from the date of the particular change which has warranted change in the registration application"Fifteen days, running from the change itself and not from when you got round to it. This is the one hard date on the page and businesses routinely miss it because nobody told them the clock had started
"Application for Amendment of Registration cannot be filed when there is: Change in PAN"The wall. Not a harder form, not a longer wait. There is no amendment route at all, and a fresh registration has to be applied for. This is the single most important line on this page for anybody restructuring a business
The same bar applies to a change of constitution that results in a change of PAN, and to a relocation from one State to anotherSo a proprietorship becoming a partnership, or a firm becoming a company, is not a name amendment. It is a new registration, and the old one has to be dealt with separately. Plan for that rather than discovering it
Read the PAN wall together with the fifteen day limit, because that combination catches people. A business restructures, the PAN changes, and somebody spends three weeks trying to amend the existing registration before learning it cannot be amended. By then the clock has been running the whole time on a route that never existed. Establish first whether the PAN is changing. If it is, you are applying fresh, and nothing on the amendment screen is going to help you.
What we are not printing, and why. We are not listing which documents your officer will ask for, what any of this costs, or how many days it actually takes at a Jharkhand office. We have verified none of that, and requirements in practice differ. What is in the table above is from the GST portal's own published guidance. Anything about your specific case should come from the portal, from the officer, or from your accountant or tax practitioner in writing.
Keep one request to one subject. If your Legal Name is wrong and you want to add a godown and the authorised signatory has changed, those are three core matters. Filing them together gives an officer three reasons to raise a query on one application. Sort out the one that is blocking you first.

Why Udyam Registration Has No Name for You to Correct

Udyam surprises people. They go looking for an edit box for the name, do not find a satisfying one, and assume the portal is broken. It is not. The record is built to be fed by other Government systems, and the notification says so.

What the Ministry of MSME notification and the Udyam portal provide about how Udyam details are sourced
The provisionWhat it means for a name
Notification S.O. 2119(E) of 26 June 2020: "Any person who intends to establish a micro, small or medium enterprise may file Udyam Registration online in the Udyam Registration portal, based on self-declaration with no requirement to upload documents, papers, certificates or proof"Nothing is uploaded and nothing is proved at registration. Which sounds easy, and is exactly why the details have to come from somewhere else that has already been verified
The same notification links investment to the Income Tax Return of previous years filed under the Income Tax Act, 1961, and turnover to the Income Tax Act or the CGST Act and the GSTINYour enterprise is described to the Ministry through your PAN and your GSTIN. So the identity behind a Udyam certificate is the identity on those records, not something typed into a box
The official portal states that "PAN & GST linked details on investment and turnover of enterprises will be taken automatically from Government data bases", and that the system is fully integrated with the Income Tax and GSTIN systemsThis is the sentence to remember. Taken automatically. If the name shown is wrong, the place to fix it is the database it was taken from
The portal states that having PAN and GSTIN, as applicable under the CGST Act and as notified by the Ministry vide S.O. 1055(E) dated 5 March 2021, is required for Udyam Registration with effect from 1 April 2021So PAN and GST are not optional background details. They are the conditions of the registration itself, which is another way of saying they are the name
Notification paragraph 8: an enterprise shall update its information online in the Udyam Registration portal on self-declaration basis, and "failure to update the relevant information within the period specified in the online Udyam Registration portal will render the enterprise liable for suspension of its status"This is the teeth. Neglecting the record does not just leave it stale. It makes the enterprise liable for suspension of its MSME status, and with it whatever that status was getting you
The portal carries an Update or Cancel Udyam Registration route, and a Forgot Udyam or UAM Number facilitySo there is a way in, including for the very common case of a proprietor who no longer has the number. Use the update route after PAN and GST are right, not before
The order here is not a preference, it is the only order that works. Udyam shows what PAN and GST say. So correcting Udyam first is like wiping a mirror to change your face. PAN first, then GST, then update Udyam. Every enquiry we get that has gone round in circles for months started by trying to fix the last record in the chain instead of the first.
The suspension risk is worth more attention than the name. Plenty of small enterprises in Jharkhand registered on Udyam once, in 2020 or 2021, and have not looked at it since. The notification makes an enterprise liable for suspension of its status for failure to update within the specified period. If you are reading this page because of a spelling, take ten extra minutes and check that the registration is current as well. That is the more valuable thing you will do today.

How to Change a Name in GST and Udyam Registration, Step by Step

1

Find out whether the PAN is changing

Ask this before anything else. If the PAN changes, no GST amendment is possible and a fresh registration is required. Everything below assumes the PAN is staying the same.

2

Read both GST names against your PAN

The Legal Name and the Trade Name, separately, letter by letter. Write down which one is wrong. This is the question you will be asked first and most owners arrive without the answer.

3

If it is your own name, fix PAN first

For a proprietor the Legal Name comes from the PAN. Settle that, and settle it against your Aadhaar at the same time, because the two are linked.

4

Note the fifteen day clock

The guidance says to apply within 15 days from the date of the change. Diarise it from the date of the event, not from the date you noticed. If you are already past it, apply anyway rather than delaying further.

5

Know whether your field is core or non-core

A Legal Name change is core and goes to the Tax Official for approval. A Trade Name and most other particulars are non-core. This is what decides how long you wait.

6

Keep one application to one subject

Do not fold a name change, a new place of business and a new signatory into one filing. Three core matters on one application give an officer three reasons to raise a query.

7

Ask what your officer needs, in writing

We print no document list, because we have verified none and practice differs. Let the portal, the officer, or your accountant's written answer be your list rather than a list from an article.

8

Wait out the approval, and keep the acknowledgement

If the officer does not act, the guidance says a core amendment is auto approved after the stipulated time. Keep the application reference safely, because that is your proof the clock started.

9

Only then update Udyam

Because Udyam takes the linked details automatically from Government databases. Use the portal's update route once PAN and GST show the right name, and not before.

10

Check the Udyam registration is current while you are in there

Failure to update within the specified period makes the enterprise liable for suspension of its status. Ten extra minutes, and worth more than the spelling that brought you here.

11

Bring the downstream records into line

The bank account linked for refunds, the electricity connection for the premises, the trade licence, the signboard. Each has its own route and its own office.

12

Reprint the certificate and check it

Download the amended registration certificate and read both name lines again. A correction that introduces a fresh error is easiest to catch on the day it appears.

Steps 1, 3 and 9 are the whole page. Establish whether the PAN is changing, fix PAN before GST, and touch Udyam last. Almost every long running GST and Udyam name problem we are shown got one of those three backwards, and the commonest of all is a proprietor trying to amend GST while the PAN still carries the old spelling.

Where the difficulty is that your name appears in two proper forms rather than one wrong one, see our short name and full name page, and where the words are right but in the wrong order, our name order page. To decide whether your case is a correction or a genuine change of name, our correction against change of name page sets out the test.

Central Gazette Process for a Name From Jharkhand, and Where It Fits a GST or Udyam Record

Read this before the rest of this section. Nothing about a GST registration or a Udyam registration is ever published in a gazette. A GST record is amended on the portal, and a Udyam record takes its linked details automatically from Government databases. This process matters to you in one situation only: where a proprietor is genuinely changing his or her own name, most often after a marriage, because for a proprietor the Legal Name of Business is that person's own name. The gazette belongs to that personal change, and the PAN, GST and Udyam records are simply the records that follow afterwards. It is printed in full so you can see what a real file involves, and so you recognise at once when a gazette is being quoted to you for a trade name or a spelling on a certificate.

No district in Jharkhand has a gazette counter, so a genuine file goes from Ranchi, Jamshedpur, Dhanbad, Bokaro, Hazaribagh, Deoghar or anywhere else in the state to the Department of Publication, Civil Lines, Delhi 110054, and the notice publishes in Part IV of the Gazette of India. As reported in July 2025 the Finance Department stopped personal name change notifications from the Jharkhand Government Press with immediate effect, so there is no state alternative to fall back on.

The Eight Steps of a Name File Sent From Jharkhand

1

Settle the final name first

Letter by letter, with the spacing you want, and then use exactly that everywhere, PAN included. A corrigendum after publication is a second fee and a second wait.

2

Pick the category, then its proforma

A genuine change of name is change of Name Adult or Major. A wrongly typed spelling is the public notice for a wrongly written name. Twelve categories exist and only one is yours.

3

Type the proforma in duplicate

Two originals with two witnesses giving signature, full name, address and mobile number on both copies. A change of name is signed in the old name; a public notice is signed in your own name.

4

Fill the employment field if it is a change of name

The adult proforma asks for the post of the applicant and the office or company name. A proprietor filling this for a personal change should treat the business as the office, and not leave it blank, because a blank field brings the file back.

5

Publish and keep the original paper

One of the daily local leading newspapers, carrying both names in full, the father or husband name and the residential address. The whole original paper goes in the file, not a cutting.

6

Pay only through BharatKosh

The Non Tax Receipt Portal and nowhere else since October 2018. Select the Department of Publication by name, read the amount the portal shows on the day, pay in your own name and print the e-receipt.

7

Check every date, then post it yourself

Nothing in the file older than one year. Personally or by post or courier only, never through an agent or advocate. Photocopy everything first, because nothing sent in comes back.

8

Read the notice, then update in the right order

Check every word the day it publishes, download the e-Gazette copy of that Part IV issue, and then work through Aadhaar and PAN first, GST next, and Udyam last of all.

The Five Papers in the File, and What Is Checked in Each

The five papers of a Central Gazette name file from Jharkhand and what the Department checks in each
The paperWhat is checked in it, clause by clause
1. The proforma, in duplicateThat it is the right category format; the existing full name exactly as your documents carry it; the new full name exactly as settled; the father or husband name; the full address with pin code; the post and office or company name where it is a change of name; the signature in the right name for the category; two witnesses complete with signature, full name, address and mobile number
2. The affidavit or undertakingThe same names and address as the proforma, word for word, with wording matching the category. On Rs 100 non-judicial stamp paper as our safe default
3. The original newspaperThe original paper, not a cutting; the paper name and date of publication visible; both names carried; the father or husband name and residential address; dated within the last year
4. Photographs, identity proof and any category paperTwo self attested passport photographs; self attested identity and address proof matching the proforma address; both witnesses proofs; and, in a public notice file, the attested photocopy of the connected document carrying the error
5. The CD, its certificate and the BharatKosh receiptMS Word, without the witness portion, with the name typed in place of the signature; the certificate that the hard copy and the soft copy are the same; the forwarding letter to the Controller of Publication with a telephone number and email; the e-receipt
The proforma is where files are lost, and there are twelve to choose from. A wrongly typed spelling filed on the change of name form declares henceforth be known as, claiming a change you never made. The Government charge already paid is not refunded, because BharatKosh payments are non-refundable. You then have six months to make good a shortcoming the Department points out, after which a fresh application with all new documents is required.
What to select on BharatKosh, field by field. Pay to the Department of Publication under the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, and pick the Ministry, the Pay and Accounts Office and the Drawing and Disbursing Officer by their names in the dropdown, never by a code copied off a website. The codes printed for this office on different websites do not agree with each other, and money paid into the wrong head cannot be traced to your file. Read the amount on the portal on the day you pay, because it is revised each financial year.
A gazette is not a trade name registration, and it is not a business name change. If what you want is to trade under a different name, that is a Trade Name amendment on the GST portal and possibly a trade licence matter, and no gazette is involved at any stage. A gazette notice is about a person. Anybody selling a proprietor a gazette file to rename a shop is selling something the process does not do.

The posting detail is on the sending the file to Delhi page, the change of name wording on the proforma format page and the public notice wording on the public notice proforma page, the charge by category on the fee and undertaking page, the reasons files come back on the rejection reasons page, and the download on the download page.

What a GST and Udyam Name Change Costs in Jharkhand

Cost and time for a GST and Udyam registration name change in Jharkhand
ItemCostTime
Working out which of the two GST names is wrongNothing, and it decides the whole job. Read the Legal Name and the Trade Name against your PAN. Ten minutes with the certificate in your handOne sitting
Amending a non-core field such as the Trade NameFiled on the portal. We print no charge and no timeline, because we have verified neither. What we can tell you is that non-core fields do not need the Tax Official's approval, which is why they move fasterApply within 15 days of the change, as the guidance requires
Amending a core field such as the Legal Name of BusinessAgain no charge we can verify. The cost here is time and attention, because it requires approval by the Tax Official, and is auto approved after the stipulated time if the officer does not actSet by the officer, with auto approval after the stipulated time
A fresh GST registration, where the PAN is changingNot a cost you can avoid by wishing. No amendment can be filed where there is a change in PAN, so budget for a new registration and for dealing with the old one, rather than for a name amendment that does not existAs for any new registration
Correcting PAN first, which for a proprietor is usually the real workThe Income Tax Department's own charge for a correction. We do not print it, because we have not verified the current amount, and it is shown on the official portal at the time of applicationSet by the department
Updating UdyamUdyam Registration is free of cost on the official portal, which says so on its own home page and warns that no other website or app is official. Any fee being asked for a Udyam update is being asked by somebody who is not the MinistryThe portal's update route
Affidavit, where somebody asks for oneRs 100 non-judicial stamp paper and the notary charge. Two originals, because the office keeps one. Do not buy it before somebody asksThe same day
Government printing charge, only where a proprietor is genuinely changing his or her own nameThe guidelines print Rs 1,100 for an adult change of name and Rs 1,400 for a public notice, for FY 2016 to 2017, each with the caveat that the charge varies each financial year and from case to case. What BharatKosh shows on the payment screen the day you pay is the figure that countsPart IV publishes weekly, so allow several weeks from posting
Our chargeQuoted on your papers before you pay anything, and confirmed in writing. We print no service price on any page of this site
Do not trust a figure printed on any website, including this one, on the day you pay. The Department's own guidelines say the printing charge varies each financial year and from case to case, so the figures above are what the published guidelines show for 2016 to 2017 and are given so you know the order of the amount, not the amount. What BharatKosh shows when you reach the payment screen is the one that counts. Read it there and pay that.
The real cost on this page is a missed deadline, not a fee. Two dates matter and neither appears on any bill. The fifteen days to apply for a GST amendment from the date of the change, and the Udyam requirement to keep the information updated, failing which the enterprise is liable for suspension of its status. Both are free to comply with and expensive to ignore. The line items across all records are on our name change cost page.

Myths About GST and Udyam Registration Name Changes

Common beliefs about GST and Udyam name changes and what is actually correct
What people are toldWhat is actually so
There is one name on a GST certificateThere are two, and they behave differently. The Trade Name you chose. The Legal Name of Business came from the PAN. Almost every wasted month on this subject starts with somebody trying to change the wrong one
A gazette notification will change the GST or Udyam nameIt will not. Neither record is ever published anywhere. A gazette is about a person, and it matters here only where a proprietor is genuinely changing his or her own name, with PAN, GST and Udyam following afterwards
Fix the GST record and PAN will catch upBackwards. For a proprietor the Legal Name comes from the PAN, and the guidance allows a Legal Name amendment only "if there is no change in PAN". Correct the PAN, then GST
Any registration detail can be amended if you file the right formNot so. The guidance states plainly that an "Application for Amendment of Registration cannot be filed when there is: Change in PAN". There is no form for it. A fresh registration is required, and the same applies to a relocation between States
You can amend a GST detail whenever you get round to itThe guidance says to apply within 15 days from the date of the particular change. The clock starts at the change, not at the moment you notice it. Businesses miss this constantly because nobody tells them it has started
A name amendment in GST is instantA Legal Name is a core field and requires approval by the Tax Official. The consoling half of the rule is that where the officer takes no action the application is auto approved after the stipulated time
You type your enterprise details into Udyam, so you can retype themYou do not. Notification S.O. 2119(E) links investment to the Income Tax Return and turnover to the Income Tax Act or the CGST Act and the GSTIN, and the portal says the linked details are "taken automatically from Government data bases". Fix the source, not the mirror
Once registered on Udyam, you never have to look at it againThe notification requires the enterprise to update its information online, and provides that failure to update within the specified period "will render the enterprise liable for suspension of its status". Many Jharkhand enterprises registered in 2020 or 2021 and have not looked since
Udyam registration or updating costs moneyThe official portal states that it is zero cost and free, and warns that no other website, portal or app is official. If a fee is being demanded for a Udyam update, it is not the Ministry demanding it
Changing the shop name needs a gazette or an affidavitChanging what you trade under is a Trade Name amendment, and possibly a trade licence matter with your municipal body. No gazette, and usually no affidavit. Do not buy either until somebody actually asks
The two questions that settle almost every enquiry we get on this subject. First, is the PAN changing? If yes, stop thinking about amendments. Second, which of the two GST names is wrong? If it is the Legal Name and you are a proprietor, your work is at PAN and not at GST. Answer those two and the rest of this page is just sequence.

Key Terms in a GST and Udyam Name Change

Key terms used when changing a name in GST or Udyam registration
TermWhat it means in practice
Legal Name of BusinessThe name tied to the PAN the registration was taken on. For a proprietor, the proprietor's own name. Not a name you type freely
Trade NameThe name the business trades under, which you chose. The easier of the two to change, and the one a rebranding is about
GSTINThe registration number, built around your PAN. Which is exactly why a change of PAN breaks the registration rather than amending it
Core fieldA registration detail whose amendment requires approval by the Tax Official. Includes the Legal Name where there is no change in PAN, stakeholders, and places of business other than a change of State
Non-core fieldAll the other registration details. No officer approval needed, which is why they move faster
Auto approvalWhere the Tax Official takes no action on a core amendment, the application is approved after the stipulated time. Silence eventually works in your favour
Fifteen daysThe period within which the guidance says an amendment application should be submitted, running from the date of the change itself
Fresh registrationWhat is required instead of an amendment where the PAN changes, where a change of constitution changes the PAN, or on relocation to another State
Udyam RegistrationThe MSME registration under the Ministry's notification of 26 June 2020, filed online on self-declaration with no documents or proof uploaded
Taken automaticallyThe portal's own description of how PAN and GST linked details reach Udyam. The reason there is nothing to correct in Udyam by hand
Suspension of statusWhat an enterprise becomes liable for on failure to update its Udyam information within the specified period. The sharpest consequence on this page
Authorised signatoryA third name on the GST record, and a separate core field. Keep it out of a request about the business name

GST and Udyam Registration Name Change: Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a gazette notification to change the name in GST or Udyam?+
No. Neither record is ever published anywhere. GST is amended on the portal and Udyam takes its linked details automatically from Government databases. A gazette matters here in one case only: where a proprietor is genuinely changing his or her own name, because for a proprietor the Legal Name of Business is that person's own name. Even then the gazette belongs to the personal change, and PAN, GST and Udyam are simply the records that follow.
Which name on my GST certificate am I actually trying to change?+
There are two, so read both. The Trade Name is what you trade under and you chose it, so changing that is the simpler job. The Legal Name of Business is tied to the PAN the registration was taken on. In our experience a proprietor usually means the Legal Name, because their own name is misspelt, while a firm usually means the Trade Name because the business has been rebranded. Two different jobs with two different levels of difficulty.
How long do I have to apply for a GST amendment?+
The portal guidance says to "submit the application for Amendment of Registration within 15 days from the date of the particular change which has warranted change in the registration application". Note where the clock starts: at the change itself, not at the moment you noticed it or got round to it. If you are already past fifteen days, apply anyway rather than delaying further.
Will a name amendment be approved straight away?+
Not for a Legal Name, which is a core field. The guidance says "Amendment to Core fields require approval by the Tax Official. If no action is taken by tax official, then application is auto approved after stipulated time". So there is an officer in the loop, and there is also a safety net: silence eventually results in auto approval. A Trade Name and most other particulars are non-core and do not need that approval.
My PAN is changing because the business is being restructured. Can I amend the GST name?+
No, and this is the most important answer on the page. The guidance states that an "Application for Amendment of Registration cannot be filed when there is: Change in PAN". There is no harder form and no longer route. A fresh registration has to be applied for. The same bar applies to a change of constitution that results in a change of PAN, and to a relocation from one State to another. Establish this first, before spending three weeks on an amendment screen that was never going to help.
Why can I not find a name field to edit in Udyam?+
Because there is not one in the way you are expecting. Notification S.O. 2119(E) of 26 June 2020 links investment to the Income Tax Return filed under the Income Tax Act, 1961 and turnover to the Income Tax Act or the CGST Act and the GSTIN, and the official portal states that "PAN & GST linked details on investment and turnover of enterprises will be taken automatically from Government data bases". Udyam shows what PAN and GST already say. Fix the source, then use the portal's update route.
Is PAN and GST compulsory for Udyam?+
Yes. The official portal states that having PAN and GSTIN, as applicable under the CGST Act and as notified by the Ministry of MSME vide S.O. 1055(E) dated 5 March 2021, is required for Udyam Registration with effect from 1 April 2021. The 2020 notification had allowed turnover figures on self-declaration for enterprises without PAN only up to 31 March 2021, after which PAN and GSTIN became mandatory.
What happens if I never update my Udyam registration?+
This is the part worth more attention than any spelling. The notification requires an enterprise to update its information online in the Udyam Registration portal on self-declaration basis, and provides that "failure to update the relevant information within the period specified in the online Udyam Registration portal will render the enterprise liable for suspension of its status". A great many small enterprises registered in 2020 or 2021 and have not looked at it since. If you are on the portal anyway, check that the registration is current.
Does Udyam registration or updating cost anything?+
No. The official portal states that it is zero cost, no fee and free, and warns that no other website, portal or app is official and that MSMEs should register there only. So if somebody is charging you for a Udyam update itself, that charge is not the Ministry's. You may of course pay somebody for help, but be clear that you are paying for the help and not for the registration.
Do I need to upload documents for Udyam?+
No. The notification provides that Udyam Registration may be filed online "based on self-declaration with no requirement to upload documents, papers, certificates or proof". That is also the reason the record is fed from PAN, GST and Income Tax rather than from paperwork: nothing is being proved at the counter, so the verification happens through the linked databases instead.
I am a proprietor and my own name is misspelt everywhere. Where do I start?+
At PAN and Aadhaar, not at GST and not at Udyam. For a proprietor the GST Legal Name comes from the PAN, and Udyam takes its linked details automatically from PAN and GST. So the chain is Aadhaar and PAN first, GST next, Udyam last. Settle one spelling and carry exactly that. Decide whether your case is a correction or a genuine change of name using our correction against change of name page.
What documents will the GST officer want, and how long will it take?+
We are going to be honest rather than helpful sounding. We print no document list, no charge and no processing timeline, because we have verified none of those and practice differs between offices. What is on this page instead is what the GST portal's own guidance says: the core and non-core split, the officer's approval with auto approval after the stipulated time, the fifteen day application period, and the bar where the PAN changes. Anything about your own case should come from the portal, the officer, or your accountant or tax practitioner in writing.

Who wrote and checked this page

Written and maintained by the Jharkhandnamechange.com documentation desk, led by founder Vipin Chauhan, B.Tech LL.B, with 5+ years filing with the Department of Publication. The GST positions on this page are taken from the GST portal's own published user guidance on Amendment of Registration, which lists as a core field the "Name of the Business, (Legal Name) if there is no change in PAN" along with stakeholder changes and places of business other than a change of State; states that "Amendment to Core fields require approval by the Tax Official. If no action is taken by tax official, then application is auto approved after stipulated time"; directs the applicant to "submit the application for Amendment of Registration within 15 days from the date of the particular change which has warranted change in the registration application"; and states that an "Application for Amendment of Registration cannot be filed when there is: Change in PAN", with the same bar applying to a change of constitution resulting in a change of PAN and to a relocation between States. The Udyam positions are taken from the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises notification S.O. 2119(E) dated 26 June 2020, which provides that Udyam Registration may be filed online "based on self-declaration with no requirement to upload documents, papers, certificates or proof", links investment to the Income Tax Return of previous years filed under the Income Tax Act, 1961 and turnover to the Income Tax Act or the Central Goods and Services Tax Act and the GSTIN, requires an enterprise to update its information online, and provides that "failure to update the relevant information within the period specified in the online Udyam Registration portal will render the enterprise liable for suspension of its status"; and from the official Udyam Registration portal of the Ministry of MSME, which states that having PAN and GSTIN, as notified vide S.O. 1055(E) dated 5 March 2021, is required for Udyam Registration with effect from 1 April 2021, that "PAN & GST linked details on investment and turnover of enterprises will be taken automatically from Government data bases", and that registration is zero cost and free with no other website, portal or app being official. We print no GST document list, no amendment charge and no processing timeline anywhere on this page, because we have verified none of them and practice differs between offices, and the page says so in three places rather than filling the gap with an estimate. The division of enquiries into a Legal Name problem and a Trade Name problem, and the observation that proprietors usually mean the first while firms usually mean the second, is our own working practice from handling these files and is described as such. The gazette category positions and the printing charges shown are from the Department of Publication's own published guidelines for FY 2016 to 2017, with the guidelines' own caveat that they vary each financial year and from case to case. We are a documentation consultancy and not advocates, not chartered accountants, not tax practitioners and not a GST or MSME facilitation centre, and nothing on this page is tax advice. Who we are is on the about page.

A GST and Udyam Name Change in Eight Lines

The short version

  • A GST certificate carries two names, not one.
  • The Trade Name you chose; the Legal Name came from PAN.
  • A Legal Name change is a core field and needs the officer.
  • Apply within fifteen days of the change itself.
  • Where the PAN changes, no amendment can be filed at all.
  • Udyam takes its linked details automatically from databases.
  • So fix PAN, then GST, then update Udyam last.
  • Not updating Udyam risks suspension of MSME status.

Send the GST certificate and the PAN, and we will tell you which name is actually wrong.

Most proprietors try to amend GST first. The Legal Name came from the PAN, so for them the work is at PAN and GST only follows.
