PPF Account Name Correction in Jharkhand: Branch Procedure, KYC and Minor Accounts
A Public Provident Fund account runs for fifteen years or more, so a name change after marriage, or a spelling slip at opening, is common. SBI's PPF FAQ answers it in one line: "Change of name or surname may be allowed by the branch by following the procedure laid down by RBI for change of name or surname in Bank Savings account." Because Aadhaar is required for a PPF account, and PAN at set limits, the tidy order is Aadhaar and PAN first, then the PPF branch. A spelling slip needs no Gazette notice. Five points, in the order you will need them. First, a PPF name change is made at the branch that holds the account, by the RBI savings account procedure, as SBI's FAQ says. Second, update Aadhaar and PAN first, because they are part of PPF KYC. Third, for a surname after marriage, a marriage certificate usually links the names. Fourth, a minor's PPF account passes to the child at majority "by registering his/her signature (attested by the Guardian)", a good moment to check the name. Fifth, a spelling slip needs no Gazette notice. We publish Gazette notices, and we say plainly when you do not need one.
How a Bank Branch Changes the Name in a PPF Account
The PPF Scheme, 2019 does not have its own paragraph on a change of name. It says that for matters it does not cover, "Provisions of the General Rules shall, so far as may be, apply". SBI's FAQ gives the working answer: "Change of name or surname may be allowed by the branch by following the procedure laid down by RBI for change of name or surname in Bank Savings account."

Aadhaar and PAN Before a PPF Name Correction
SBI's FAQ says Aadhaar is required for a PPF account, and that where only an enrolment number was given, the holder must "submit Aadhaar within six months from account opening date." PAN or Form 60 is needed once the balance or yearly deposits cross set limits. So your PPF name and your Aadhaar and PAN names should agree.

A Child's PPF Account at Majority: Checking the Name
The PPF Scheme lets a guardian "open one account on behalf of each minor". SBI's FAQ says that at majority, "the Minor who has become a Major will have to take over the operation of the PPF account by registering his/her signature (attested by the Guardian)."

Transferring a PPF Account After a Name Change
SBI's FAQ says that at the receiving branch, you "submit fresh PPF account opening form and Nomination form, along with original passbook", with updated KYC. So a transfer is a chance to bring the name into line, and also a place where a mismatch will surface.

Does a PPF Account Name Correction Need a Gazette Notice?
Not for a spelling slip, and usually not after marriage. The branch follows the RBI savings account procedure, where a marriage certificate can link the names. A Gazette notice helps for a genuine change of name other than marriage.

Central Gazette Process for a Name From Jharkhand, and Where It Fits a PPF Account
No district in Jharkhand has a gazette counter, so a genuine file goes from Ranchi, Jamshedpur, Dhanbad, Bokaro, Hazaribagh, Deoghar or anywhere else in the state to the Department of Publication, Civil Lines, Delhi 110054, and the notice publishes in Part IV of the Gazette of India. As reported in July 2025 the Finance Department stopped personal name change notifications from the Jharkhand Government Press with immediate effect, so there is no state alternative to fall back on.
The Eight Steps of a Name File Sent From Jharkhand
Settle the final name first
Letter by letter, with the spacing you want, and then use exactly that everywhere, Aadhaar included. A corrigendum after publication is a second fee and a second wait.
Pick the category, then its proforma
A genuine change of name is change of Name Adult or Major. A wrongly typed spelling is the public notice for a wrongly written name. Twelve categories exist and only one is yours.
Type the proforma in duplicate
Two originals with two witnesses giving signature, full name, address and mobile number on both copies. A change of name is signed in the old name; a public notice is signed in your own name.
Fill the employment field if it is a change of name
The adult proforma asks for the post of the applicant and the office or company name. A student or a homemaker should still complete it rather than leaving it blank, because a blank field brings the file back.
Publish and keep the original paper
One of the daily local leading newspapers, carrying both names in full, the father or husband name and the residential address. The whole original paper goes in the file, not a cutting.
Pay only through BharatKosh
The Non Tax Receipt Portal and nowhere else since October 2018. Select the Department of Publication by name, read the amount the portal shows on the day, pay in your own name and print the e-receipt.
Check every date, then post it yourself
Nothing in the file older than one year. Personally or by post or courier only, never through an agent or advocate. Photocopy everything first, because nothing sent in comes back.
Read the notice, then update in the right order
Check every word the day it publishes and download the e-Gazette copy. Then update Aadhaar, then PAN, then your savings account, and take the notice to the PPF branch last.

For a slip or a surname after marriage, the cost is the Aadhaar and PAN updates and a branch visit. A Gazette cost comes in only for a genuine change of name other than marriage.
