Sovereign Gold Bond (SGB) Name Correction in Jharkhand: Certificate of Holding, Bank and Demat

Many families in Jharkhand bought Sovereign Gold Bonds through their bank or post office. When the name on the bond is misspelt, or no longer matches PAN and the bank account, interest and redemption can be held up. RBI's procedural guidelines of 23 December 2016 have a section titled "Change of address, correction of name, change of account number and other miscellaneous requests". It says the customer's request "(in plain paper)", "supported by the Certificate of Holding", may be processed by the Receiving Office after verification. For a spelling slip, that is not a Gazette notice. We publish Gazette notices, and we say this first.

1Plain paper request, with the Certificate of Holding
2Ways an SGB is held: certificate or demat
2006Government Securities Act, which governs nomination and heirs
0Gazette notices needed for a spelling slip
Quick answer

Five points, in the order you will need them. First, find out how your SGB is held: as a certificate in RBI's books, or in a demat account. Second, for a certificate holding, write a plain paper request to the bank, post office or broker you bought through, with the Certificate of Holding. Third, attach proof of the correct name, such as PAN and Aadhaar; the office "may call for additional documents". Fourth, for a demat holding, the name follows your demat account, so correct it with your DP. Fifth, check the bank account name, since interest and redemption go there. We publish Gazette notices, and we say plainly that most SGB name corrections need none.

What RBI's SGB Guidelines Say About Correction of Name

Sovereign Gold Bond name correction in Jharkhand, with an SGB Certificate of Holding, PAN card and bank passbook
The Receiving Office corrects the name on an SGB held as a certificate.

RBI's circular RBI/2016-17/193 sets out how SGBs are serviced. Paragraph 10 covers name corrections for bonds held as stock certificates.

What RBI's SGB procedural guidelines say
PointWhat RBI's guidelines say
What is covered"Change of address, correction of name, change of account number and other miscellaneous requests"
How to ask"requests of the customer (in plain paper)", "supported by the Certificate of Holding"
Who processes itThe Receiving Offices, "through the E-Kuber portal after verification of the particulars"
More papers"The Receiving Offices may call for additional documents if deemed necessary."
Who the Receiving Offices areScheduled commercial banks (not RRBs), SHCIL, designated post offices, and NSE and BSE
This rule is for certificate holdings. Paragraph 10 speaks of bonds "held in the form of stock certificates". If your SGB sits in a demat account, the name comes from that account. See how each case is fixed below.

Which SGB Name Case You Have

SGB name problems usually fall into a few kinds. This sorting is ours, built on RBI's guidelines.

Kinds of Sovereign Gold Bond name problem
What happenedWhat it usually is
Certificate holding, name misspeltA paragraph 10 correction at the Receiving Office
Demat holding, name wrongA correction with your DP
Name changed after marriageA change needing proof of marriage
Bank account name differsA bank record to correct; interest goes there
Holder has diedNominee or heirs, under the Government Securities Act
Find your Receiving Office. It is usually the bank branch, post office or broker through which you applied. Your Certificate of Holding and the bank passbook entry for the purchase will show it.

How to Fix Each Sovereign Gold Bond Name Case

RBI's guidelines give the route. Which proof to attach is our practical advice, since the guidelines leave it to the Receiving Office.

Fixing each kind of SGB name case
CaseWhat usually fixes it
Certificate holding, spelling slipPlain paper request with the Certificate of Holding, plus PAN and Aadhaar
Certificate holding, change by marriageThe same request, with the marriage certificate. See married women
Demat holdingCorrect the name with your DP. See demat and mutual fund
Bank account name wrongCorrect it at the bank. See bank records
Genuine change of nameA Central Gazette notice, then PAN, then the bank and the SGB
Fix PAN and the bank first. RBI's guidelines say the Receiving Office processes the request "after verification of the particulars". If PAN and the bank account already show the right name, the verification is easy. See our PAN and Aadhaar mismatch page.

SGB Nominees, Legal Heirs and Joint Holders

RBI's guidelines tie nomination and succession to the Government Securities Act, 2006. An heir's name must match the heir's own papers, just as the holder's did.

Nomination and succession for SGBs, per RBI's guidelines
PointWhat RBI's guidelines say
Nomination"governed by Section 9 of the Government Securities Act, 2006", read with the 2007 Regulations
Deceased holderTitle "subject to the provisions of Sections 7 and 8 of the Government Securities Act 2006"
Death certificate misspeltRegistrar correction. See death certificate correction
Nominee's name differsLink it with a marriage certificate or affidavit. See nominee name mismatch
The heir's documents are for the Receiving Office to set. We did not read the Act's sections 7 and 8 themselves, so we print no list of heir documents. Ask the bank or post office, and a lawyer if the family disagrees.

Does a Sovereign Gold Bond Name Correction Need a Gazette Notice?

Usually not. RBI's guidelines ask for a plain paper request with the Certificate of Holding, and leave further documents to the Receiving Office. A spelling slip is shown with PAN and Aadhaar; a married name with a marriage certificate. A Gazette notice is for a genuine change of name.

When a Gazette notice is relevant to an SGB
SituationWhat usually applies
Spelling slipPlain paper request with PAN and Aadhaar. No Gazette
Change by marriageMarriage certificate. No Gazette
Demat holdingDP correction. No Gazette
Genuine new nameA Central Gazette notice is the clean route
Our commercial interest, stated plainly. We publish Gazette notices. For most SGB name corrections, you do not need one. Where you have genuinely changed your name, it goes in the Gazette of India, Part IV, since the Jharkhand state press stopped personal notices in July 2025, as reported.

How to Correct the Name on a Sovereign Gold Bond, Step by Step

1

Find your Certificate of Holding

Or your demat statement.

2

Check how the SGB is held

Certificate or demat.

3

Compare the name with PAN

Letter by letter.

4

Fix PAN and the bank account first

If they are wrong.

5

Find the Receiving Office

Bank, post office or broker.

6

Write a plain paper request

Old name, correct name, holding details.

7

Attach the Certificate of Holding

And proof of the correct name.

8

Hand it in and take a receipt

Keep a copy.

9

Give more papers if asked

The office may ask.

10

For demat, correct with your DP

The SGB follows the account.

The one rule that holds the whole job together. Certificate holding: the Receiving Office. Demat holding: your DP. Know which you have before you start.

Central Gazette Process for a Name From Jharkhand, and Where It Fits a Sovereign Gold Bond

Read this before the rest of this section, because most SGB name corrections never need it. A spelling slip is a plain paper request with PAN and Aadhaar; a married name uses a marriage certificate; a demat holding is corrected with the DP. No Gazette notice is needed for those. It is printed in full for a genuine new name.

No district in Jharkhand has a gazette counter, so a genuine file goes from Ranchi, Jamshedpur, Dhanbad, Bokaro, Hazaribagh, Deoghar or anywhere else in the state to the Department of Publication, Civil Lines, Delhi 110054, and the notice publishes in Part IV of the Gazette of India. As reported in July 2025 the Finance Department stopped personal name change notifications from the Jharkhand Government Press with immediate effect, so there is no state alternative to fall back on.

The Eight Steps of a Name File Sent From Jharkhand

1

Settle the final name first

Letter by letter, with the spacing you want, and then use exactly that everywhere, Aadhaar included. A corrigendum after publication is a second fee and a second wait.

2

Pick the category, then its proforma

A genuine change of name is change of Name Adult or Major. A wrongly typed spelling is the public notice for a wrongly written name. Twelve categories exist and only one is yours.

3

Type the proforma in duplicate

Two originals with two witnesses giving signature, full name, address and mobile number on both copies. A change of name is signed in the old name; a public notice is signed in your own name.

4

Fill the employment field if it is a change of name

The adult proforma asks for the post of the applicant and the office or company name. A student or a homemaker should still complete it rather than leaving it blank, because a blank field brings the file back.

5

Publish and keep the original paper

One of the daily local leading newspapers, carrying both names in full, the father or husband name and the residential address. The whole original paper goes in the file, not a cutting.

6

Pay only through BharatKosh

The Non Tax Receipt Portal and nowhere else since October 2018. Select the Department of Publication by name, read the amount the portal shows on the day, pay in your own name and print the e-receipt.

7

Check every date, then post it yourself

Nothing in the file older than one year. Personally or by post or courier only, never through an agent or advocate. Photocopy everything first, because nothing sent in comes back.

8

Read the notice, then update in the right order

Check every word the day it publishes and download the e-Gazette copy. Then update PAN and Aadhaar, then the bank, then send the notice with the Certificate of Holding to the Receiving Office.

The Five Papers in the File, and What Is Checked in Each

The five papers of a Central Gazette name file from Jharkhand and what the Department checks in each
The paperWhat is checked in it, clause by clause
1. The proforma, in duplicateThat it is the right category format; the existing full name exactly as your documents carry it; the new full name exactly as settled; the father or husband name; the full address with pin code; the post and office or company name where it is a change of name; the signature in the right name for the category; two witnesses complete with signature, full name, address and mobile number
2. The affidavit or undertakingThe same names and address as the proforma, word for word, with wording matching the category. On Rs 100 non-judicial stamp paper as our safe default
3. The original newspaperThe original paper, not a cutting; the paper name and date of publication visible; both names carried; the father or husband name and residential address; dated within the last year
4. Photographs, identity proof and any category paperTwo self attested passport photographs; self attested identity and address proof matching the proforma address; both witnesses proofs; and, in a public notice file, the attested photocopy of the connected document carrying the error
5. The CD, its certificate and the BharatKosh receiptMS Word, without the witness portion, with the name typed in place of the signature; the certificate that the hard copy and the soft copy are the same; the forwarding letter to the Controller of Publication with a telephone number and email; the e-receipt
The proforma is where files are lost, and there are twelve to choose from. A wrongly typed spelling filed on the change of name form declares henceforth be known as, claiming a change you never made. The Government charge already paid is not refunded, because BharatKosh payments are non-refundable. You then have six months to make good a shortcoming the Department points out, after which a fresh application with all new documents is required.
What to select on BharatKosh, field by field. Pay to the Department of Publication under the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, and pick the Ministry, the Pay and Accounts Office and the Drawing and Disbursing Officer by their names in the dropdown, never by a code copied off a website. The codes printed for this office on different websites do not agree with each other, and money paid into the wrong head cannot be traced to your file. Read the amount on the portal on the day you pay, because it is revised each financial year.
What a Gazette notice will not do for an SGB. It will not change the bond record by itself; you still send the request to the Receiving Office. It links old and new names, and nothing more. Since we publish these notices, the honest version is this: for most SGB name corrections, you need none. Our name correction against name change page explains the categories.

The posting detail is on the sending the file to Delhi page, the change of name wording on the proforma format page and the public notice wording on the public notice proforma page, the charge by category on the fee and undertaking page, the reasons files come back on the rejection reasons page, and the download on the download page.

What a Sovereign Gold Bond Name Correction Costs

RBI's guidelines, as we read them, name no fee for a name correction. We print none. The costs are the documents, and usually not a Gazette notice.

Costs connected with an SGB name correction
ItemWhat we can and cannot tell you
Plain paper requestNo fee named in RBI's guidelines
DP correction, for dematYour DP's charges, if any
PAN or bank correctionTheir own charges, if any
Affidavit, if askedStamp paper, Rs 100 as our safe default, plus the notary's fee
Gazette noticeOnly for a genuine new name. Paid on BharatKosh, revised each year and non-refundable

The mistake that costs the most. Waiting until redemption to notice the name. Correct it while interest is still being paid, so the final payout goes through smoothly.

Written and maintained by the Jharkhandnamechange.com documentation desk, led by founder Vipin Chauhan, B.Tech LL.B, with 5+ years filing with the Department of Publication. The rules on this page are quoted from RBI's procedural guidelines for servicing Sovereign Gold Bonds, RBI/2016-17/193 of 23 December 2016: correction of name on plain paper with the Certificate of Holding, the Receiving Offices, E-Kuber, additional documents, demat conversion, and nomination and succession under the Government Securities Act, 2006. Three limits are declared openly on the page itself. First, RBI leaves the proof documents to the Receiving Office, so what to attach is our advice. Second, we did not read sections 7 to 9 of the Act themselves. Third, later RBI circulars may have changed details, so ask your Receiving Office. We publish Gazette notices, and this page says plainly that most SGB name corrections need none.
