Two names have to agree here, and one of them is not yours • The age band starts at forty, not sixty

Name Change in Widow Pension and Nirashrit Mahila Samman in Jharkhand

Every other record on this website depends on your own papers. This one depends on somebody else's. A widow pension is granted on proof of widowhood, which in practice means a death certificate in your husband's name, and that certificate was written by a registrar after he had died. So two names must agree, and one of them belongs to a person who can no longer correct his own record. That single fact is why this subject is harder than it looks and why so many applications sit unanswered. The Government's own account of the scheme adds a second surprise: assistance is extended to "widows aged between 40 and 79 years who belong to families living below the poverty line". Forty, not sixty. A woman widowed in her forties is inside the band, and a great many households in this State have never been told so.

2Names that must agree, and one is not your own
40Years, where the widow pension age band begins
79Years, where that band ends and another begins
0Gazette notices this pension by itself ever needs
Quick answer

Read the death certificate and your own papers side by side before you write to anybody. A widow pension application is checked against two names, not one: your husband's name as the registrar wrote it on the death certificate, and your own name as your papers carry it. Either can be the thing that is wrong, and they are corrected in completely different places. The husband's name on a death certificate is corrected through the registration authority that issued it. Your own name is corrected at whichever of your records is out of step. There is a third difficulty that belongs only to this subject. A married woman in this State very often has papers from three different periods of her life: a birth or school record in the name she was given, documents made after marriage in a different form, and a death certificate that describes her as the wife of the man who has died. Three name states for one woman, and an office comparing them has no way of knowing they are the same person unless the papers are laid out properly. On the scheme itself, the Government's published account says assistance goes to "widows aged between 40 and 79 years who belong to families living below the poverty line", that "Gram Panchayats and Municipalities play an active role in identifying eligible beneficiaries", and that benefits are paid "through DBT mode" into a bank or post office savings account. So the route starts at the panchayat and the money lands in an account, and either end can break on its own.

A Widow Pension Rests on a Name That Is Not Your Own

Name change in widow pension and Nirashrit Mahila Samman in Jharkhand
Two papers, two names, and only one of them is a name you have ever been able to correct.

On every other subject we can tell you to put your documents on a table and find the one that disagrees. Here one of the documents was written about somebody else, at the worst moment in a family's life, often by a person in a hurry.

Why a widow pension application turns on two names and how each is corrected
The positionWhat it means for you
Proof of widowhood in practice means a death certificate in the husband's nameSo the application is checked against a record you did not make, cannot amend yourself, and may never have read carefully. Read it now, line by line, before anything else
That certificate was written at the time of the death, from information given by a relative or a hospitalNames are commonly shortened, spelled by ear, or given in the form the neighbourhood used. It is nobody's fault and it is extremely common
The certificate usually also carries your own name, as his wifeWhich means your name appears on it in whatever form the informant used that day. That is a second place your name can be wrong, and families almost never check it
A correction to a death certificate goes to the registration authority that issued itNot to the pension office, and not to a bank. It is a separate process with its own evidence, and it should be started early because it takes time
Your own name is corrected at whichever of your records is out of stepThe Aadhaar, the bank account, the ration card. Two different repairs, two different offices, and they can run at the same time
The practical orderWork out first which of the two names is actually wrong. Very often neither is, and the real problem is that they are written in different styles, which an office can be shown rather than asked to fix
The mistake we most want to prevent. Families assume that because the death certificate is a Government document it must be right, and they start altering their own correct papers to match a name written on it in haste. Do not do that. If your Aadhaar, your bank account and your ration card all agree with each other, and the death certificate stands alone, then the death certificate is the odd one out, and that is the record to take up. Damaging a set of correct papers to match a single wrong entry leaves a woman with no consistent identity at all.
What to do in the first hour. Put the death certificate beside your Aadhaar, your bank passbook and your ration card. Write down, on one sheet, how your husband's name appears and how your own name appears on each. You now have the entire case on a single page, and any office you approach can see it in a few seconds. Our birth certificate name change page describes the registration side of these records, which is the same world a death certificate belongs to.

One Woman, Three Name States, and Why an Office Cannot Tell

This is the part nobody explains at a counter, and it is the reason a perfectly genuine application can look doubtful to a clerk who has never met you.

The three periods a married woman's documents come from and how each carries her name
Where the paper comes fromHow the name usually appears
Before marriage: a birth record, a school certificate, sometimes an early AadhaarThe name she was given, often with Kumari in it, and her father's name beside it. This is the oldest and frequently the only dated evidence of her age
After marriage: a bank account, a ration card, a later Aadhaar, a voter cardOften a husband's surname, often Devi, and her husband's name beside it instead of her father's. Our Kumari or Devi to the husband's surname page deals with exactly this shift
The death certificate: written after the husband diedShe appears as his wife, in whatever form the informant gave that day. A third version, and the one the pension application leans on
What a clerk sees when these arrive togetherThree names and two different men listed as the relative. Nothing on the papers says they are one woman, and the clerk is not being difficult by asking
What actually solves itA chain, not an argument. Papers laid in order, each one overlapping the next on some detail, so that the line from the school certificate to the death certificate can be followed by somebody who has never met the family
Where to settle the question for goodChoose one form of the name and bring the changeable records to it. Our name change for married women page sets out how to choose, and why choosing once is worth more than correcting three times
Build the chain, and do it on paper. Put the oldest document first and the newest last. If the school certificate says Sunita Kumari, daughter of Ramdeo, and the ration card says Sunita Devi, wife of Mohan, and the death certificate says Mohan, husband of Sunita Devi, then the chain already exists and only needs pointing out. Where a link is genuinely missing, that is the one gap to fix, and it is usually a single record rather than all of them.
Two names that are not a mismatch at all. Kumari and Devi are not surnames in the way an office in another State might read them, and a woman who was Kumari before marriage and Devi afterwards has not changed her name in any meaningful sense. This is so common in Jharkhand that it should never by itself defeat an application, and it is worth saying so politely in the covering letter rather than assuming the office already knows.

The Widow Pension Age Band Begins at Forty, Not Sixty

We meet households who waited years because somebody told them a pension was for old people. The published position is different, and it is worth knowing precisely.

What the Government's published account states about the widow pension age band and assistance
What is officially statedWhat follows from it
Assistance is extended to "widows aged between 40 and 79 years who belong to families living below the poverty line"Forty is the start of the band. A woman widowed in her forties is not too young, and a household that assumed otherwise may have lost years
The band ends at 79Which means something changes at eighty. It is not that the support stops; it is that the category and the amount are treated differently after that age
For "widows who are 80 years and above, the amount of central assistance is Rs. 500 per month"A figure we can print because it is stated in the Government's own account. It is the central share, and a State may add to it
The note we read did not separately state the amount for the 40 to 79 widow bandSo we do not print one. Ask the block office what the current total is, including the State's own share, and ask for the answer in writing
The scheme sits inside a programme that "at present comprises five sub-schemes"Which is why a household can be inside one scheme and outside another. Being refused under one does not answer the question for the rest
Why the date of birth matters here tooBecause forty and eighty are both gates. A wrong year on a paper can put a woman outside a band she belongs in, and our date of birth correction page sets out that route
One honest caution about amounts and conditions. These figures and bands are revised from time to time, and the description above is what the Government's published account states, not a promise about what is payable today. The number that matters is the one the block office gives you in writing this month. Be particularly careful of websites that quote a confident total without saying where they got it, because on this subject that is a very easy way to send a woman to an office for nothing.

The Panchayat Identifies You and the Account Receives the Money

An application has two ends, and a name problem can break either one without breaking the other. Knowing which end has failed saves most of the running about.

How a widow pension is identified and paid, and where a name problem can break the chain
What is officially statedWhat it means in practice
"Gram Panchayats and Municipalities play an active role in identifying eligible beneficiaries under the different NSAP schemes"The route begins locally. Not at a district headquarters and not on a website. The panchayat or the ward is where a household gets onto the list at all
Benefits are provided "through DBT mode" into the "beneficiary's bank or post office savings accounts"So the money lands in an account, and an account is a record with a name on it. A dormant or wrongly named account stops a sanctioned pension without anything being wrong with the sanction
A post office savings account is expressly one of the destinationsWorth knowing in villages where the post office is closer than a bank. Our post office savings correction page covers that side
Aadhaar numbers are linked to beneficiary accounts for secure and direct transfer, on the Government's own account of the programmeWhich means the Aadhaar sits underneath the whole arrangement. Correcting it once often repairs more than one thing at a time
Where the chain breaks at the frontThe household was never identified, or the name entered at identification does not match the papers. That is a panchayat and block matter, in writing
Where the chain breaks at the backThe sanction exists but the money does not arrive. That is almost always the account, and it is the cheapest end to check first. Our bank records name change page covers it
Ask one question before you travel anywhere. Has the pension been sanctioned, and if so, where is it being sent? If it has not been sanctioned, the work is at the panchayat and block end and the papers to fix are the identification papers. If it has been sanctioned and is not arriving, the work is at the account end and a branch or post office visit may settle it. Those are two different journeys, and most families make the wrong one first.

The Jharkhand State Scheme and the Limits of What We Verified

Jharkhand runs its own pension for women in this position alongside the national scheme, and we are going to be careful about what we say of it.

What is verified and what is not about widow and destitute women pensions in Jharkhand
PositionOur note
The national widow pension band of 40 to 79 years and the below poverty line conditionVerified, from the Government's own published account of the programme
That Gram Panchayats and Municipalities identify beneficiaries, and that payment is by DBT into a bank or post office savings accountVerified from the same source, and these two facts decide most of the practical advice on this page
The Jharkhand State pension for destitute women, run by the State's own departmentWe could not open a Government page setting out its current eligibility, amount or procedure. So we print no State eligibility line, no State amount and no State form number
Whether a household qualifies under the national scheme, the State scheme, or bothThat is a question for the block office, and it is worth asking in exactly those words, because the answer decides which papers matter
Any total amount you have seen quoted onlineTreat it with care. A central share and a State share are different things, and both are revised. Ask for the figure in writing at the block office
What a correction request needs either wayThe death certificate, your own identity papers, the account details, a written application and a dated acknowledgement. That much is the same under any scheme
Why we are being this careful here in particular. The people reading this page are often widowed, often poor, and frequently making a journey on somebody else's bus fare. A wrong eligibility line or a stale amount printed on a website costs them a day they cannot spare. We would rather print a gap and tell you exactly which office can close it. Every gap on this page is marked as a gap.

How to Fix a Name Problem in a Widow Pension Application in Jharkhand

1

Read the death certificate line by line

Both names on it: your husband's, and your own as his wife. This is the document the application leans on, and most families have never examined it closely.

2

Lay your own papers beside it

The Aadhaar, the bank passbook, the ration card, the voter card. Write on one sheet how each one spells your name.

3

Decide which of the two names is actually wrong

Yours or his. Often neither is wrong and they are simply written in different styles, which is shown rather than corrected.

4

Never damage a consistent set to match one entry

If your own papers agree with each other and the death certificate stands alone, the certificate is the odd one out. Take that up instead.

5

Start a death certificate correction early if you need one

It goes to the registration authority that issued it, not to the pension office, and it is the slowest part of this job. Begin it while the rest proceeds.

6

Build the chain from oldest paper to newest

School or birth record, then post marriage papers, then the death certificate. An office that can follow the line will not need to be argued with.

7

Check your date of birth against both gates

Forty and eighty both matter here. A wrong year can put a woman outside a band she belongs in, and that is a date correction, not a name correction.

8

Find out whether it has been sanctioned

Ask the block office in those words. Not sanctioned means the work is at the panchayat end. Sanctioned but not arriving means the work is at the account end.

9

Check the account before assuming the record is wrong

Dormant, closed, or in a name that no longer matches. Payment is by DBT into a bank or post office savings account, and that end breaks quietly.

10

Put everything in writing and take the receipt

However helpful the counter is. A dated acknowledgement is the only thing that survives a transfer of officers, and on this subject the wait can be long.

11

Ask whether the State scheme also applies

The national scheme and the State scheme are different things with different conditions. Being outside one does not answer the question for the other, and the block office can say which applies.

12

Settle the household records in the same round

The ration card, the children's school records, any policy in the husband's name. Our LIC policy records page covers the one families most often forget.

Where most readers of this page will actually end up. Either the two names are simply written in different styles and the whole job is a covering letter that lays the chain out, or the account at the far end has stopped working and a branch visit settles it. Both of those are free, and we will tell you so rather than taking a fee for a letter you could write yourself. The households that genuinely need paid help are the ones where the death certificate itself carries a wrong name and a registration correction has to be run properly.

Central Gazette Process for a Name From Jharkhand, and Where It Fits a Widow Pension

Read this before the rest of this section. A widow pension is not granted or corrected by a gazette notice. It rests on a death certificate and on your own identity papers, and each of those has its own route. A gazette can do nothing at all about a name on a death certificate, because that record belongs to a person who has died and is corrected only by the registration authority. This process matters to you in one situation only: where you are genuinely changing your own name, and the Aadhaar, the bank account and the scheme record would follow afterwards. It is printed in full so you can see what a real file involves, and so you recognise at once when a gazette is being sold to a widow who does not need one. That happens, and it is one of the reasons this page exists.

No district in Jharkhand has a gazette counter, so a genuine file goes from Ranchi, Jamshedpur, Dhanbad, Bokaro, Hazaribagh, Deoghar or anywhere else in the state to the Department of Publication, Civil Lines, Delhi 110054, and the notice publishes in Part IV of the Gazette of India. As reported in July 2025 the Finance Department stopped personal name change notifications from the Jharkhand Government Press with immediate effect, so there is no state alternative to fall back on.

The Eight Steps of a Name File Sent From Jharkhand

1

Settle the final name first

Letter by letter, with the spacing you want, and then use exactly that everywhere, Aadhaar included. A corrigendum after publication is a second fee and a second wait.

2

Pick the category, then its proforma

A genuine change of name is change of Name Adult or Major. A wrongly typed spelling is the public notice for a wrongly written name. Twelve categories exist and only one is yours.

3

Type the proforma in duplicate

Two originals with two witnesses giving signature, full name, address and mobile number on both copies. A change of name is signed in the old name; a public notice is signed in your own name.

4

Fill the employment field if it is a change of name

The adult proforma asks for the post of the applicant and the office or company name. A student or a homemaker should still complete it rather than leaving it blank, because a blank field brings the file back.

5

Publish and keep the original paper

One of the daily local leading newspapers, carrying both names in full, the father or husband name and the residential address. The whole original paper goes in the file, not a cutting.

6

Pay only through BharatKosh

The Non Tax Receipt Portal and nowhere else since October 2018. Select the Department of Publication by name, read the amount the portal shows on the day, pay in your own name and print the e-receipt.

7

Check every date, then post it yourself

Nothing in the file older than one year. Personally or by post or courier only, never through an agent or advocate. Photocopy everything first, because nothing sent in comes back.

8

Read the notice, then update in the right order

Check every word the day it publishes, download the e-Gazette copy, and then work through the Aadhaar and the bank or post office account first, because the payment reads both, and let the pension record follow after them.

The Five Papers in the File, and What Is Checked in Each

The five papers of a Central Gazette name file from Jharkhand and what the Department checks in each
The paperWhat is checked in it, clause by clause
1. The proforma, in duplicateThat it is the right category format; the existing full name exactly as your documents carry it; the new full name exactly as settled; the father or husband name; the full address with pin code; the post and office or company name where it is a change of name; the signature in the right name for the category; two witnesses complete with signature, full name, address and mobile number
2. The affidavit or undertakingThe same names and address as the proforma, word for word, with wording matching the category. On Rs 100 non-judicial stamp paper as our safe default
3. The original newspaperThe original paper, not a cutting; the paper name and date of publication visible; both names carried; the father or husband name and residential address; dated within the last year
4. Photographs, identity proof and any category paperTwo self attested passport photographs; self attested identity and address proof matching the proforma address; both witnesses proofs; and, in a public notice file, the attested photocopy of the connected document carrying the error
5. The CD, its certificate and the BharatKosh receiptMS Word, without the witness portion, with the name typed in place of the signature; the certificate that the hard copy and the soft copy are the same; the forwarding letter to the Controller of Publication with a telephone number and email; the e-receipt
The proforma is where files are lost, and there are twelve to choose from. A wrongly typed spelling filed on the change of name form declares henceforth be known as, claiming a change you never made. The Government charge already paid is not refunded, because BharatKosh payments are non-refundable. You then have six months to make good a shortcoming the Department points out, after which a fresh application with all new documents is required.
What to select on BharatKosh, field by field. Pay to the Department of Publication under the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, and pick the Ministry, the Pay and Accounts Office and the Drawing and Disbursing Officer by their names in the dropdown, never by a code copied off a website. The codes printed for this office on different websites do not agree with each other, and money paid into the wrong head cannot be traced to your file. Read the amount on the portal on the day you pay, because it is revised each financial year.
Why a gazette is the wrong route for this particular problem. The hardest name on a widow pension file is the one on the death certificate, and a gazette notice says nothing about it. A gazette is a published statement that a living person is changing their own name. It cannot change what a registrar wrote about somebody who has died, and it cannot reconcile Kumari with Devi, which was never a change of name in the first place. The routes that work are a registration correction for the certificate and an ordinary record correction for your own papers. Our name correction against name change page explains the difference in full.

The posting detail is on the sending the file to Delhi page, the change of name wording on the proforma format page and the public notice wording on the public notice proforma page, the charge by category on the fee and undertaking page, the reasons files come back on the rejection reasons page, and the download on the download page.

What a Widow Pension Name Correction Costs in Jharkhand

Cost and time for correcting a name behind a widow pension application in Jharkhand
ItemCostTime
Reading the death certificate against your own papersNothing, and it settles most cases. Both names written on one sheet, from every document. Very often the papers agree and only the style differsOne hour
Asking whether the pension has been sanctionedNothing, and it decides which journey to make. Not sanctioned means the panchayat and block end. Sanctioned but not arriving means the account endOne visit or one call
A covering letter that lays out the chain of papersPaper and postage. Oldest document to newest, with the overlaps pointed out, so an officer who has never met you can follow itSend it the same week
Correcting the death certificate, where that is the record that is wrongThe slow one, and the one to start first. It goes to the registration authority that issued it, with its own evidence. We print no fee because we verified noneMonths rather than weeks
Correcting the AadhaarAadhaar charges a fee per attempt with no refund and limits how often a name may be updated. Everything here reads it, so get the request right onceSet by the enrolment centre
Fixing the bank or post office accountThe institution's own process at the branch. We print no charge because they differ and we verified none. Frequently the fastest fix on this pageSet by the branch
The pension amount itselfThe Government's published account states Rs 500 per month of central assistance for widows who are 80 years and above. It did not separately state the amount for the 40 to 79 band, so we print none, and a State adds its own share on topAsk the block office and get it in writing
Government printing charge, only in a genuine change of your own nameThe guidelines print Rs 1,100 for an adult change of name and Rs 1,400 for a public notice, for FY 2016 to 2017, each with the caveat that the charge varies each financial year and from case to case. What BharatKosh shows on the payment screen the day you pay is the figure that countsPart IV publishes weekly, so allow several weeks from posting
Our chargeQuoted on your papers before you pay anything, and confirmed in writing. We print no service price on any page of this site
Do not trust a figure printed on any website, including this one, on the day you pay. The Department's own guidelines say the printing charge varies each financial year and from case to case, so the figures above are what the published guidelines show for 2016 to 2017 and are given so you know the order of the amount, not the amount. What BharatKosh shows when you reach the payment screen is the one that counts. Read it there and pay that.
Look at how much of this costs nothing at all. Reading two documents together, asking one question at the block office, and writing one letter that sets the papers out in order will resolve the majority of the cases that reach us. We would rather tell a widow that her job is a free letter than take a fee for writing it. The paid work on this subject is a death certificate correction, and that is the one place where getting it right first time genuinely saves money. The line items across all records are on our name change cost page.

Myths About Widow Pension and Nirashrit Mahila Samman Name Corrections

Common beliefs about widow pension name corrections and what is actually correct
What women are toldWhat is actually so
A widow pension is only for elderly womenThe Government's account says assistance goes to "widows aged between 40 and 79 years who belong to families living below the poverty line". Forty is the start of the band, and households have lost years by assuming otherwise
The death certificate is a Government paper, so it must be rightIt was written at the time of the death, from information given by a relative or a hospital, often in haste. Names are regularly shortened or spelled by ear. Read it before you assume

Kumari and Devi are two different names, so the application failsThey are not surnames in the way an office elsewhere might read them, and a woman who was Kumari before marriage and Devi afterwards has not changed her name in any real sense. Say so in the covering letter
A gazette notification will fix the name on the death certificateIt will not, and it cannot. A gazette is a published statement that a living person is changing their own name. The death certificate is corrected only by the registration authority that issued it

If one scheme refuses you, there is nothing elseThe national programme "at present comprises five sub-schemes" and the State runs its own pension as well. Ask the block office which schemes apply to this household, in those words
Somebody quoted me the exact monthly amount, so that is what I will getA central share and a State share are different things and both are revised. We print the one figure the Government's account states and no other, and we tell you to get the current total in writing
An agent can get it sanctioned faster for a feeAsk him which of the two names he is going to correct and at which office. There is no shortcut through a death registration record, and the free steps on this page settle most cases without him
The question that ends most of these conversations. Ask: which of the two names is wrong, mine or my husband's, and has this pension ever been sanctioned? Those two answers between them tell you whether the work is a registration correction, an ordinary record correction, a covering letter, or a visit to a bank. Most women who write to us have never been asked either question by anybody.

Key Terms in a Widow Pension Name Correction

Key terms used when dealing with widow pension and destitute women pension records
TermWhat it means in practice
Proof of widowhoodIn practice the death certificate of the husband. The document this whole subject turns on, and the one you did not write
InformantThe person who gave the details when the death was registered, usually a relative or a hospital. The reason a name may be shortened or spelled by ear
Registration authorityThe office that registered the death and issued the certificate. The only place a name on that certificate can be corrected
The age bandAssistance is stated as going to widows aged between 40 and 79 years. Two gates, forty and eighty, and a wrong date of birth can put a woman outside one
Below the poverty lineThe condition attached to the national scheme in the Government's account. An eligibility question, not a name question, and the block office answers it
IdentificationBeing put on the list at all. Done with an active role for Gram Panchayats and Municipalities, which is why the route starts locally
SanctionThe decision that the pension is payable. Ask whether this has happened before you do anything else, because it decides which end of the chain to work on
DBTDirect benefit transfer. Payment into the beneficiary's bank or post office savings account, which means an account with a name on it stands between the sanction and the money
Kumari and DeviForms commonly carried before and after marriage in this State. Not a change of name in any meaningful sense, and worth saying so plainly to an office
The chain of papersDocuments laid oldest to newest, each overlapping the next, so that one woman can be followed across three name states by a stranger
NirashritDestitute. The word the State scheme for women in this position uses in its own name
Service pensionA different thing entirely, paid because somebody worked. A family pension after a husband's service is covered on our pension and family pension page

Widow Pension Name Help Across Jharkhand

The offices that matter on this subject are close to home by design: the panchayat or ward where identification happens, the block office where the application sits, the registration authority that issued the death certificate, and the bank or post office where the money is meant to land. What we do comes before any of those visits. We read the death certificate against your own papers, tell you which of the two names is actually wrong, build the chain from your oldest document to your newest so that an officer can follow it, and draft the covering letter and the correction request. Where the answer is that nothing is wrong and the papers only need to be presented in order, we will tell you that and charge nothing for it. Everything can be done on scans over WhatsApp, and a son, a daughter or a neighbour can send them on your behalf.

Send the death certificate and your own papers

Send the death certificate first, because that one document usually settles the whole question. Then your Aadhaar, your bank or post office passbook page, the ration card, and the oldest paper you still have from before your marriage, such as a school certificate. A son, a daughter or a neighbour can send these on your behalf, and most people who write to us about this subject are doing exactly that. Tell us in one line what has happened: the application has not been sanctioned, the money has stopped, or an office has said a name does not match. Our first reply tells you which of the two names is actually wrong, yours or your husband's, which office can correct it, whether the papers you already hold make a chain that only needs pointing out, and what the letter should say. If the answer is that nothing needs correcting and the papers simply need presenting in order, we will tell you that and charge you nothing. Details on the contact page.

Widow Pension Name Change: Frequently Asked Questions

The name on my husband's death certificate is wrong. What do I do?+
That correction goes to the registration authority that issued the certificate, not to the pension office and not to a bank. It is a separate process with its own evidence, and it is the slowest part of this job, so start it early while everything else proceeds. We print no form number or fee for it because we verified none, so ask the issuing office what it requires and get the answer in writing. Meanwhile put your own papers in order, because the two repairs can run at the same time.
Should I change my own papers to match the death certificate?+
Almost never, and this is the most damaging thing families do. If your Aadhaar, your bank account and your ration card all agree with one another and only the death certificate differs, then the certificate is the odd one out. Breaking a consistent set of papers to match a single entry written in haste leaves a woman with no consistent identity at all, and every later application becomes harder. Correct the record that is actually wrong.
I am 45. Am I too young for a widow pension?+
No. The Government's published account states that assistance is extended to "widows aged between 40 and 79 years who belong to families living below the poverty line". Forty is where the band begins, not sixty. A great many households in this State have waited years because somebody told them a pension was only for the elderly. Eligibility also turns on the below poverty line condition, which the block office decides, not us.
My school certificate says Kumari and my ration card says Devi. Is that a problem?+
It should not be, and it is extremely common in Jharkhand. Neither word is a surname in the way an office in another State might read it, and a woman who was Kumari before her marriage and Devi afterwards has not changed her name in any meaningful sense. What helps is laying the papers out oldest to newest so the line can be followed, and saying this plainly in the covering letter. Our Kumari or Devi to the husband's surname page sets out the position.
How much is the widow pension?+
We print only what the Government's own account states, which is that for "widows who are 80 years and above, the amount of central assistance is Rs. 500 per month". That note did not separately state the amount for the 40 to 79 band, so we do not print one, and in any case a State adds its own share on top of the central one and the figures are revised. Ask the block office for the current total and ask for it in writing. Be careful of any website that quotes a confident number without saying where it came from.
Where do I apply? Is it at the district office?+
The route begins locally. The Government's account states that "Gram Panchayats and Municipalities play an active role in identifying eligible beneficiaries under the different NSAP schemes". That matters practically, because for most women reading this the real obstacle is the journey. Start at the panchayat or the ward and then the block office, in writing, and take a dated acknowledgement away with you each time.
The pension was approved but no money has come. Is my name wrong?+
Check the account first, because that is the cheaper thing to rule out. Benefits are paid "through DBT mode" into the beneficiary's bank or post office savings account, so an account that has gone dormant, been closed, or carries a name that no longer matches will stop a pension that was correctly sanctioned. Our bank records and post office savings pages cover both destinations.
Do I need a gazette notification?+
No, and it would not help with the hardest part anyway. A gazette notice is a published statement that a living person is changing their own name. It cannot change what a registrar wrote about somebody who has died, and it does not reconcile Kumari with Devi, which was never a change of name. If anybody is selling a gazette file to a widow for this purpose, that is not the route. Our name correction against name change page explains the difference.
Is this the same as the family pension after my husband's service?+
No, they are different things. A family pension is paid because your husband worked, and it rests on his service record and pension payment order. A widow pension under a social assistance scheme is paid because a household is in need, and it rests on the death certificate and an eligibility condition. Different offices, different papers. Our pension and family pension records page covers the service side, where the commonest problem is a wife recorded decades ago in her maiden form.
What is the Nirashrit Mahila Samman pension, and is it different?+
It is the State's own pension for destitute women, run alongside the national scheme. We could not open a Government page setting out its current eligibility, amount or procedure, so we print none of those. What we can tell you is the question to ask, in these words: does this household qualify under the national scheme, the State scheme, or both? The answer decides which papers matter, and being outside one does not answer the question for the other.
I have lost the death certificate. Can I still apply?+
A certificate that was registered can ordinarily be obtained again from the registration authority that holds the record, so a lost copy is usually not the end of the matter. Ask that office what it needs and get the answer in writing. Do not let anybody persuade you to substitute an affidavit for a record that exists, because an affidavit says what you state and a registration record says what was registered, and offices treat them very differently.
How much of this can you actually do for us?+
We read the death certificate against your own papers, tell you which of the two names is actually wrong, build the chain from your oldest document to your newest so an officer can follow it, draft the covering letter and the correction request, and tell you which office each one goes to. Where the papers already make a chain and only need presenting properly, we say so and charge nothing. We are a documentation consultancy and not advocates, not a registration authority, not a panchayat or block office, not a bank and not a social security department.

Who wrote and checked this page

Written and maintained by the Jharkhandnamechange.com documentation desk, led by founder Vipin Chauhan, B.Tech LL.B, with 5+ years filing with the Department of Publication. The quoted positions on this page come from the Government of India's Press Information Bureau account of the National Social Assistance Programme, and we print very little beyond them. From that source: that the programme "at present comprises five sub-schemes as its components"; that under the widow pension scheme "financial assistance is extended to widows aged between 40 and 79 years who belong to families living below the poverty line"; that for "widows who are 80 years and above, the amount of central assistance is Rs. 500 per month"; that "Gram Panchayats and Municipalities play an active role in identifying eligible beneficiaries under the different NSAP schemes"; that benefits are provided "through DBT mode" into the "beneficiary's bank or post office savings accounts"; and that beneficiaries' Aadhaar numbers are linked to their accounts for secure and direct transfer. Five limits are declared on the page itself. First, the note we read did not separately state the amount for the 40 to 79 widow band, so we print no figure for it, and we say on the page that a State adds its own share and that amounts are revised. Second, we could not open a Government page setting out the current eligibility, amount or procedure of the Jharkhand State pension for destitute women, so we print no State eligibility line, no State amount and no State form number. Third, we print no form number, fee or timeline for correcting a death certificate, because we verified none; the page says only that the correction belongs to the registration authority that issued it. Fourth, whether a particular household meets the below poverty line condition is an eligibility question for the block office and not one this page answers. Fifth, the national scheme and the State scheme are different things, and the page tells the reader to ask which applies rather than assuming. The framing of the subject as two names of which one is not your own, the description of three name states in a married woman's papers, the chain of papers from oldest to newest, and the distinction between a break at the identification end and a break at the account end, are our own working practice and are described as such. We state on the page that a consistent set of papers should never be broken to match a single entry, and that is the advice we give most often on this subject. The gazette category positions and the printing charges shown are from the Department of Publication's own published guidelines for FY 2016 to 2017, with the guidelines' own caveat that they vary each financial year and from case to case. We are a documentation consultancy and not advocates, not the Department of Publication, not a registration authority, not a panchayat, block or social security office and not a bank. Who we are is on the about page.
