Hansda, Murmu, Marandi, Kisku, Soren and Tudu are Santal clan names • Each is written more than one way in English • A spelling already on one of your documents needs no Gazette

Munda, Soren, Murmu, Marandi, Hansda, Tudu and Kisku Surname Spelling on Documents in Jharkhand

Soren, Murmu, Marandi, Hansda, Tudu and Kisku are not just surnames. They are Santal clan names, and each came into English through a clerk writing what he heard. So one family can hold Hansda on a school certificate, Hansdah on Aadhaar and Hasda on a caste certificate, and a recruitment panel can read those as three people. Munda is different again: it is the name of a people, and also a surname. None of these spellings is wrong. What matters is that your records agree. In most families one spelling is already on the Class 10 certificate, and bringing the rest into line is a correction at each issuing office, with no Gazette notice at all. We publish Gazette notices, and we say this first because most readers of this page will not need one.

12Santal clans: 7 senior and 5 junior
4Written spellings of Hansda alone: Hansda, Hansdah, Hasda, Hansdak
1Spelling to choose for the whole family, and then keep
0Gazette notices needed when your chosen spelling is already on a document
Quick answer

Five points, in the order you will need them. First, Hansda, Murmu, Marandi, Kisku, Soren and Tudu are Santal clan names, along with Hembram, and each is written more than one way in English. Second, no spelling is the "right" one. The question is only which spelling your records will agree on. Third, let your Class 10 certificate decide in most cases, because every panel and board compares against it. Fourth, if the spelling you want is already on one of your documents, this is a correction, done at each issuing office, and no Gazette notice is needed. Fifth, Munda is a separate people with its own clans, so do not "correct" a Munda clan name into a Santal one because they look alike. A Gazette notice comes in only in the narrow cases this page explains, and we publish those notices, so we have said plainly when you do not need one.

Santal Clan Surnames: Hansda, Murmu, Marandi, Kisku, Soren, Hembram and Tudu

Santal and Munda surname spelling on documents in Jharkhand: Soren, Murmu, Marandi, Hansda, Tudu, Kisku
One clan name, written more than one way.

The Santal have twelve clans, called pari. As the Wikipedia article on the Santal people puts it: "These 12 clans are divided into two ranks: 7 senior and 5 junior." Each clan name passes from father to children, which is why it sits in the surname place on your documents.

The twelve Santal clans as listed in the source
RankClan names, as the source writes them
Seven senior clansHansda, Murmu, Marandi, Kisku, Soren, Hembram, Tudu
Five junior clansBaskey or Baske, Besra, Chorey or Chonre, Pauria or Pawria, Bediya
NoticeEven the source gives two spellings for three of the junior clans
Why this matters for your papers. A clan name is spoken first and written second. When a school clerk, a block office or an Aadhaar operator wrote it down in English, each wrote it the way it sounded to them. That is how one family ends up with two or three spellings, and none of them is a mistake. Hembram has its own page: Hembrom or Hembram.

Hansda or Hansdah, Murmu, Soren and Kisku: Spelling Variants on Jharkhand Documents

Only one of these names has its variants listed in a source we could check. Wikipedia's page on the surname Hansda gives "Hansdah or Hasda or Hansdak" as other spellings. For the rest, the differences follow the same kinds of pattern. These are examples of the kind we see, not a complete or official list.

Kinds of spelling difference in Santal surnames
Kind of differenceWhat it looks like
A final letter added or droppedHansda and Hansdah; Hansda and Hansdak
A middle letter droppedHansda and Hasda
A final vowel changedBaskey and Baske; Chorey and Chonre
A consonant swappedPauria and Pawria
A vowel written two waysHembrom and Hembram
Check the Hindi line too. Many Jharkhand records carry the name in Devanagari as well as English. A clerk may have written one correctly and the other differently. Read both lines on every document before deciding what is wrong. See Hindi to English spelling difference, and for Ol Chiki, Santali Ol Chiki and English.

Munda Surname and Munda Clan Names: Not the Same as Santal Clans

Munda is the name of a people, and in many families it is also the surname. The Munda have their own clans. Wikipedia's article on the Munda people says: "Clans among Mundas are known as Killi", and "Munda are patrilineal, and clan name descends father to son." Its list of Munda clans includes Hemrom, which looks very like the Santal Hembram.

Munda and Santal surnames that can be confused
SituationWhat it means for your papers
Your surname is MundaKeep it as your records already show it; the same four tests below apply
Your records show a Munda killi nameIt may come from a Munda family, not a Santal one. Do not change it to look like a Santal clan
Hemrom against Hembram or HembromCould be two different clans of two peoples. Ask your family before "correcting" either
Munda added to a first-name-only recordThat is adding a surname. See adding a community surname
An office cannot tell you which people your family belongs to. Only your family and your community records can. If a clerk offers to "correct" your clan name to a spelling he knows better, stop and check. Changing a clan name can create a mismatch on your Scheduled Tribe certificate, which matters for jobs and seats. See tribal surname mismatch on the ST certificate.

Which Surname Spelling to Keep: Four Tests for Santal and Munda Families

Run these in order. The first one usually answers it. This is our method, built from how boards and panels check records, not an official rule.

Four tests for choosing a surname spelling
TestWhat to ask
1. Class 10 certificateWhat spelling does it carry? Usually keep that one, because correcting it is the slowest job of all
2. Count your documentsWhich spelling is on more of them? Each one that already agrees is one you never touch
3. Your parents' documentsA panel checks your father's name on your certificate against his own papers
4. Anything pendingA verification or admission already under way? Keep the spelling it is working from, and settle the rest after
Settle one spelling for the whole family. Brothers and sisters with different spellings pass the problem to whoever applies next. Write one line down and keep it with your papers: our family spelling is this, and every form from today carries exactly that. For the parents' side, see father's name spelling mismatch.

How to Correct a Santal or Munda Surname Spelling on Each Document in Jharkhand

Once you have decided, each document goes to its own office. If your chosen spelling is already on one document, you are asking for a correction, not a change of name, and no Gazette notice is needed for that.

Where each document is corrected
DocumentWhere and how
Already in your chosen spellingLeave it. It is your proof for the others
JAC certificateThrough the school, against the admission register. See JAC certificate correction
Caste or ST certificateAt the issuing office through JharSewa. See caste certificate correction
AadhaarUIDAI allows two name updates in a lifetime, so do it once, after the rest is settled. See Aadhaar name change
Birth certificateA registrar correction, never a Gazette. See birth certificate
PAN, bank, voter card, licenceLast of all, each at its own office
When a published notice does come in. Two cases only. If the school register itself carries the other spelling, the board may not correct the certificate, and the route is a public notice for a wrongly written name; see public notice for a wrongly written name. And if the spelling you want is on none of your documents, that is a change of name. In every other case, you do not need a Gazette notice, and since we publish them, we are telling you so.

How to Settle a Santal or Munda Surname Spelling in Jharkhand, Step by Step

1

Put every family document on one table

Yours and your parents'.

2

Write each spelling down, letter by letter

English line and Hindi line.

3

Check: Santal clan or Munda clan?

Ask your family before correcting.

4

Run the four tests and decide

Class 10 first.

5

Write the family spelling down

One line, kept with your papers.

6

Is that spelling already on a document?

Then it is a correction, no Gazette.

7

Correct the school record first

Through the school, against the register.

8

Then the caste or ST certificate

At the issuing office.

9

Then Aadhaar, once

Two name updates in a lifetime.

10

Then PAN, bank and the rest

Each at its own office.

The one rule that holds the whole job together. Decide once, for the whole family, and correct from the oldest record outwards. Correcting Aadhaar first, or changing your mind halfway, creates the mismatch you were trying to remove.

Central Gazette Process for a Name From Jharkhand, and and When a Clan Surname Spelling Needs It

Read this before the rest of this section, because most surname spelling cases never need it. If your chosen spelling of Hansda, Murmu, Soren or any clan name is already on one of your documents, you correct the others at their own offices and no Gazette notice is needed. A notice comes in only when the school register itself carries the other spelling, which uses the public notice for a wrongly written name, or when the spelling you want is on none of your papers. It is printed in full so you recognise at once when a notice is being sold to you that you do not need.

No district in Jharkhand has a gazette counter, so a genuine file goes from Ranchi, Jamshedpur, Dhanbad, Bokaro, Hazaribagh, Deoghar or anywhere else in the state to the Department of Publication, Civil Lines, Delhi 110054, and the notice publishes in Part IV of the Gazette of India. As reported in July 2025 the Finance Department stopped personal name change notifications from the Jharkhand Government Press with immediate effect, so there is no state alternative to fall back on.

The Eight Steps of a Name File Sent From Jharkhand

1

Settle the final name first

Letter by letter, with the spacing you want, and then use exactly that everywhere, Aadhaar included. A corrigendum after publication is a second fee and a second wait.

2

Pick the category, then its proforma

A genuine change of name is change of Name Adult or Major. A wrongly typed spelling is the public notice for a wrongly written name. Twelve categories exist and only one is yours.

3

Type the proforma in duplicate

Two originals with two witnesses giving signature, full name, address and mobile number on both copies. A change of name is signed in the old name; a public notice is signed in your own name.

4

Fill the employment field if it is a change of name

The adult proforma asks for the post of the applicant and the office or company name. A student or a homemaker should still complete it rather than leaving it blank, because a blank field brings the file back.

5

Publish and keep the original paper

One of the daily local leading newspapers, carrying both names in full, the father or husband name and the residential address. The whole original paper goes in the file, not a cutting.

6

Pay only through BharatKosh

The Non Tax Receipt Portal and nowhere else since October 2018. Select the Department of Publication by name, read the amount the portal shows on the day, pay in your own name and print the e-receipt.

7

Check every date, then post it yourself

Nothing in the file older than one year. Personally or by post or courier only, never through an agent or advocate. Photocopy everything first, because nothing sent in comes back.

8

Read the notice, then update in the right order

Check every letter of the surname the day it publishes and download the e-Gazette copy. Then take it to the school or board and the caste certificate office first, and let Aadhaar, PAN and the bank follow last.

The Five Papers in the File, and What Is Checked in Each

The five papers of a Central Gazette name file from Jharkhand and what the Department checks in each
The paperWhat is checked in it, clause by clause
1. The proforma, in duplicateThat it is the right category format; the existing full name exactly as your documents carry it; the new full name exactly as settled; the father or husband name; the full address with pin code; the post and office or company name where it is a change of name; the signature in the right name for the category; two witnesses complete with signature, full name, address and mobile number
2. The affidavit or undertakingThe same names and address as the proforma, word for word, with wording matching the category. On Rs 100 non-judicial stamp paper as our safe default
3. The original newspaperThe original paper, not a cutting; the paper name and date of publication visible; both names carried; the father or husband name and residential address; dated within the last year
4. Photographs, identity proof and any category paperTwo self attested passport photographs; self attested identity and address proof matching the proforma address; both witnesses proofs; and, in a public notice file, the attested photocopy of the connected document carrying the error
5. The CD, its certificate and the BharatKosh receiptMS Word, without the witness portion, with the name typed in place of the signature; the certificate that the hard copy and the soft copy are the same; the forwarding letter to the Controller of Publication with a telephone number and email; the e-receipt
The proforma is where files are lost, and there are twelve to choose from. A wrongly typed spelling filed on the change of name form declares henceforth be known as, claiming a change you never made. The Government charge already paid is not refunded, because BharatKosh payments are non-refundable. You then have six months to make good a shortcoming the Department points out, after which a fresh application with all new documents is required.
What to select on BharatKosh, field by field. Pay to the Department of Publication under the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, and pick the Ministry, the Pay and Accounts Office and the Drawing and Disbursing Officer by their names in the dropdown, never by a code copied off a website. The codes printed for this office on different websites do not agree with each other, and money paid into the wrong head cannot be traced to your file. Read the amount on the portal on the day you pay, because it is revised each financial year.
What a Gazette notice will not do for a clan surname. It will not rewrite your school register, your birth register or your caste certificate. Each of those is corrected at its own office, and the notice is only a paper you show them. And it cannot decide which people your family belongs to. Since we publish these notices, the honest version is this: for a spelling already on one of your documents, you need none. Our name correction against name change page explains the categories.

The posting detail is on the sending the file to Delhi page, the change of name wording on the proforma format page and the public notice wording on the public notice proforma page, the charge by category on the fee and undertaking page, the reasons files come back on the rejection reasons page, and the download on the download page.

What Correcting a Santal or Munda Surname Spelling Costs in Jharkhand

For most families, the cost is a few office applications and nothing more. A Gazette notice is the expensive part, and most surname spelling cases do not need one.

Costs connected with a clan surname spelling correction
ItemWhat we can and cannot tell you
Deciding which spelling to keepFree. It is a sitting with your papers
Office correctionsEach office sets its own charge. We print no figure
Affidavit, where an office asksStamp paper, Rs 100 as our safe default, plus the notary's fee
Central Gazette, only if neededPaid only through BharatKosh. The Department's guidelines printed Rs 1,100 for an adult change of name for 2016 to 2017; revised each financial year, never refunded
Newspaper advertisement, only if neededCharged by the paper. We print no figure
What we chargeQuoted on the call. If your spelling is already on a document, we will say you need no notice and charge nothing
The mistake that costs the most. Correcting documents before the family has decided, then changing your mind. Every correction is an application and a wait. Decide first, then move once.

Santal and Munda Surname Spelling: Frequently Asked Questions

Are Hansda, Murmu, Soren and Tudu surnames or clan names?+
Both. They are among the seven senior Santal clans, and the clan name sits in the surname place on documents.
Which is correct, Hansda or Hansdah?+
Neither is wrong. Other spellings listed include "Hansdah or Hasda or Hansdak". Keep the one your Class 10 certificate carries, in most cases.
Do I need a Gazette notice to fix my surname spelling?+
Usually not. If the spelling you want is already on one of your documents, it is a correction at each office. We publish Gazette notices, and we still tell you this.
When is a Gazette notice needed?+
Only when the school register itself carries the other spelling, which uses the public notice for a wrongly written name, or when the spelling you want is on none of your documents.
Which document decides the spelling?+
In most cases, your Class 10 certificate, because boards and panels compare everything against it.
My brother uses Murmu and I use a different spelling. Does it matter?+
Yes, over time. Settle one spelling for the family, or the problem moves to whoever applies next.
Is Munda a Santal clan?+
No. The Munda are a separate people with their own clans, called killi.
Are Hemrom and Hembram the same?+
The sources list Hemrom among Munda clans and Hembram among Santal clans. Ask your family before changing either. See our Hembrom or Hembram page.
Should I correct Aadhaar first?+
No, last. UIDAI allows two name updates in a lifetime, so update it once, after the school record and caste certificate agree.
How do I correct my ST certificate spelling?+
At the issuing office, through JharSewa, with a copy of the document carrying your chosen spelling. See our caste certificate correction page.
My father's surname is spelt differently from mine. What now?+
A panel checks your father's name against his own papers. Bring both into line together. See our father's name spelling mismatch page.
How much of this can you do for us?+
The deciding, the application wording, and a Gazette file only if one is needed. We cannot correct a record for you, and we do not promise what an office will decide.

Who wrote and checked this page

Written and maintained by the Jharkhandnamechange.com documentation desk, led by founder Vipin Chauhan, B.Tech LL.B, with 5+ years filing with the Department of Publication. The clan lists on this page are quoted from Wikipedia's articles on the Santal people and the Munda people, and the Hansda variants from Wikipedia's page on that surname. These are general reference sources, not Government records, and we say so openly. The UIDAI two-update limit and the Department of Publication fee are from our checked canon. The Jharkhand Government Press position is as reported in July 2025. Three limits are declared on the page itself. First, the variant examples other than Hansda are patterns we see, not an official list. Second, the four tests are our method, not a published rule. Third, no office publishes a "correct" spelling for any clan name. Because a Gazette notice is one possible route and we publish those notices, we have a commercial interest here, and the page says plainly that most cases do not need one. We are a documentation consultancy and not advocates, not a Government office, and not the Department of Publication. Who we are is on the about page.
