One of these spellings is the notified one • One is the same name written differently • One may not be the same name at all

Oraon, Uraon or Oram on Certificates in Jharkhand

This is not the same question as a surname spelling, and treating it that way is how people get into trouble at a scrutiny. Two of these three are tied together and one is not. The Constitution (Scheduled Tribes) Order lists the community for Jharkhand at entry 25 as Oraon, Dhangar (Oraon), so Oraon is the notified spelling. Jharkhand's own Tribal Welfare Research Institute writes that the community is also spelt Uraon, so that one is the same name. Oram is different, and we will show you why below rather than pretend otherwise. Read this before you let any office correct one into the other.

25The entry that names the community
2Fields on your papers, and they differ
1Of the three that may be a separate name
10The class whose certificate settles yours
Quick answer

First, separate two things that look alike on paper and behave completely differently. One is the community entry on a Scheduled Tribe certificate, which is a notified category. The other is the surname on your own name, which is whatever your family's records carry. For the community entry there is a correct spelling and it is not a matter of opinion: the Constitution (Scheduled Tribes) Order lists the Jharkhand community at entry 25 as "Oraon, Dhangar (Oraon)". That is the notified form, so a certificate that says Oraon matches the Order exactly. Next, Uraon. The Government of Jharkhand's own Tribal Welfare Research Institute writes that "The Kurukh or Oraon or Dhangar ... also spelt Uraon or Oraon, are a Dravidian ethnic group inhabiting the Indian states of Jharkhand, West Bengal, Odisha and Chhattisgarh". So Uraon is not a forgery and not a clerk's blunder; the State's own institute records it as a spelling of the same name. Then there is Oram, and here we will be straight with you rather than tidy. We have not found Oram recorded anywhere as a spelling of Oraon. What we did find is an account of an Oram community in Jharkhand that used Oram as a surname from the British period, recorded in old land documents, and is now moving towards clan names such as Tirkey and Lakra, with a compromise form like Sagar Tirkey (Oram). That account treats Oram as its own group throughout. So do not let anybody convert your Oram into Oraon, or your Oraon into Oram, as though it were a spelling fix. On a Scheduled Tribe file that is not a small thing.

The Notified Scheduled Tribe Entry for Oraon in Jharkhand

Oraon, Uraon or Oram spelling on certificates in Jharkhand
The community field follows the Order. Your surname follows your own papers. Two different questions.

A Scheduled Tribe certificate does not record your opinion of how the community name is spelt. It records a notified category, and that category has one written form in the Order that creates it.

What the Order actually says. In the Constitution (Scheduled Tribes) Order, 1950, as amended, the list for Jharkhand carries the community at entry 25 in the words "Oraon, Dhangar (Oraon)". For comparison, the same list carries Munda, Patar, Tamaria (Tamadia) at entry 24, Santal at entry 27 and Ho at entry 13. So the notified spelling of your community, for Jharkhand, is Oraon.
What the notified entry decides and what it does not decide
The fieldWhat governs it
The community entry on a Scheduled Tribe certificateThe Order. Entry 25 for Jharkhand reads Oraon, Dhangar (Oraon). A certificate written that way matches the notification word for word, and that is the safest form
Your own surname on your own documentsYour family's records, starting with the Class 10 certificate. The Order does not tell you how to spell your surname and never claimed to
The community name written inside your name, where the family uses it as a surnameBoth matter. The safest position is the notified spelling, because it is the one an officer can match against the Order without thinking twice
DhangarIt is inside the same entry, in the notified words Dhangar (Oraon). The Tribal Welfare Research Institute also records that in Maharashtra the community is known as Dhangad or Dhangar
Why this is worth knowing before a scrutiny, not during one. An officer checking a Scheduled Tribe claim reads your certificate against the notified list. A community entry written exactly as the Order writes it takes that question off the table in one second. A differently spelt entry is not fatal, and it is not a forgery, but it is one more thing you will be asked to explain on a day when you would rather be explaining nothing. The wider position on how that check runs, including what a vigilance officer reads, is on our tribal surname mismatch in an ST certificate page.

How a Jharkhand caste or Scheduled Tribe certificate is applied for and corrected is on our name change in caste certificate page, and the general spelling position across all the Jharkhand surname pairs on tribal surname spelling correction.

Oraon and Uraon Are One Name, and the State Says So Itself

If your papers carry Uraon and somebody has told you it is wrong, they are overstating it. The best answer to that claim comes from the Jharkhand Government's own research institute, not from an argument you have to make yourself.

The State's own words. The Tribal Welfare Research Institute, Jharkhand writes: "The Kurukh or Oraon or Dhangar (Kurukh: Kurukh and Oraon), also spelt Uraon or Oraon, are a Dravidian ethnic group inhabiting the Indian states of Jharkhand, West Bengal, Odisha and Chhattisgarh." It also records that in Maharashtra the community is known as Dhangad or Dhangar. That is the State's own institute treating Uraon as a spelling of the same name, and it is the single most useful sentence you can carry into an office.
How Oraon, Uraon, Kurukh and Dhangar relate to each other
The wordWhat it is
OraonThe notified spelling in the Order for Jharkhand, at entry 25. The safest form for a certificate's community field
UraonThe same name, written differently. Recorded as an alternative spelling by the State's own Tribal Welfare Research Institute. Not a mistake, but not the notified form either
KurukhThe community's own name for itself and the name of its language, which is Dravidian. You will meet it in cultural and language contexts more than on certificates
DhangarInside the notified entry as Dhangar (Oraon), and recorded by the Institute as Dhangad or Dhangar in Maharashtra

What to Do If Your Papers Carry Uraon

1

Do not panic and do not rush

Nothing about Uraon makes your certificate invalid. It is a spelling of the same name and the State's own institute records it as such.

2

Check whether it is the community field or your surname

These are two different questions with two different answers, and most confusion at a counter comes from mixing them up.

3

For the community field, prefer the notified form

Because an officer can match Oraon against the Order without pausing. Ask the issuing office for that correction if it is easy.

4

For your own surname, follow your papers

The Class 10 certificate leads, as it does everywhere else. Do not change your surname to match a notification that was never about your surname.

5

Keep the Institute's sentence with your file

Print it and keep it in the folder. It answers the question in one line, from the State's own source, without you having to argue.

6

Never open a correction during a pending scrutiny

If a verification is already running, settle it first. Changing a paper midway is how a simple file becomes a long one.

One thing to refuse politely. If an office offers to "fix" your Class 10 certificate from Uraon to Oraon so that everything matches, think before you agree. Changing the board certificate is the slowest and hardest change in your whole paper trail, and it is usually easier to bring the newer records towards it instead. The board corrects against its own admission register, through the school, and once a certificate is printed it becomes a board correction matter. Decide the direction first, and only then write to anybody.

Oram Is Not the Same Question, and We Will Not Pretend It Is

Plenty of lists on the internet put Oraon, Uraon and Oram together as three spellings of one word. We looked, and we could not support that. Here is exactly what we found and what we did not, so you can judge it yourself.

What we did not find. We did not find Oram recorded anywhere as a spelling of Oraon, and it does not appear inside the notified entry, which reads only Oraon, Dhangar (Oraon). We are telling you that plainly instead of filling the gap with a guess, because on a Scheduled Tribe file a guess about a community name is not a small error.
What we did find. A published account of an Oram community in Jharkhand describes Oram being used as a surname by the whole group from the British period, visible in old land documents such as the patta, and describes a shift now towards clan names such as Tirkey and Lakra. It sets out the argument inside the community: that clan surnames keep clans apart for marriage, against the view that a common surname keeps the community together, with a compromise form like Sagar Tirkey (Oram). Throughout, that account treats Oram as its own group. It does not equate it with Oraon.
How to handle Oram on your documents
Your situationWhat we would do
Your family has always written Oram and your certificate says OramLeave it alone. Consistency is what an office checks. Do not convert it to Oraon because a website said they are the same word
An office has offered to correct Oram to Oraon, or the reverseAsk, in writing, under what authority and against which document. On a community entry this is not a spelling fix, and you are entitled to know what it is being treated as
Your own papers already carry both Oram and Oraon in different placesThis needs somebody to read the actual documents, including the oldest ones, before a single application is written. Do not start correcting on a guess
Your family is moving from Oram to a clan name such as Tirkey or LakraThat is a real change of surname, not a correction, and it should be settled once for the whole family. Our correction against change of name page sets out the test
An older patta or land record carries the nameTreat it as valuable evidence and never alter the old entry. Old land records in Jharkhand carry weight far beyond a name question
Why we are being this careful. A surname spelling is an administrative annoyance. A community name on a Scheduled Tribe certificate is the claim itself. Getting it casually rewritten, in either direction, by somebody who has not read the notification is how a family ends up defending a certificate instead of using it. If you are unsure, the right next step is somebody reading your papers, not a correction application. The decision between a correction and a change of name is on our correction against change of name page.

The Order to Settle an Oraon or Uraon Spelling in Jharkhand

The first three steps cost nothing, and in most families they end the question without an application being written at all.

1

Separate the two fields on paper

Write down what the community entry says and what your surname says. They are different questions and they may already be fine.

2

Compare the community entry with the Order

Entry 25 for Jharkhand reads Oraon, Dhangar (Oraon). If your certificate matches that, that field needs nothing.

3

Check your Class 10 certificate for the surname

Whatever it carries leads, because it is the hardest record to change and the one everything else is judged against.

4

Decide the direction once, and write it down

Which spelling the family keeps, and which records move towards it. Never start correcting before this is decided.

5

Get the school admission register page

Ask in writing for an attested copy. This is the paper a vigilance officer reads, so you should read it first.

6

Correct the community field at the issuing office

If it needs it. In writing, with a copy of the notified entry and of the document carrying the settled spelling.

7

Move the family together, not one by one

Brothers, sisters and parents. A panel compares your father's name on your certificate with his own papers.

8

Update the Aadhaar and PAN last

Always last. They are matched against the school record, so they follow and never lead.

9

Keep the Order entry and the Institute line in the folder

Printed, with the corrected records. Two short quotations settle most counter arguments before they start.

The two sentences to carry. One: the Order's own entry for Jharkhand, Oraon, Dhangar (Oraon). Two: the Tribal Welfare Research Institute's line that the community is also spelt Uraon. Between them they answer almost every question an office will raise about these two spellings, and neither is an argument you invented. Keep both printed, with the source named, in the same folder as the certificates. The same decision, for other Jharkhand clan names, is on our Hembrom or Hembram and Tirkey, Kujur and Minz pages, and the general spelling route is on name spelling correction in Jharkhand.

Central Gazette Process for a Community Name Spelling From Jharkhand, Where a Correction Cannot Do It

Read this before the rest of this section. For an Oraon and Uraon question this section is almost never yours. A community entry on a Scheduled Tribe certificate is corrected at the issuing office against the notified entry, not by publishing a notice, and a surname spelling that already appears on a document you hold is a correction too. The process is printed here in full for the rare case where a board or a panel asks you for a published notice by name, and so that you recognise at once when a gazette file is being quoted to a family whose answer was one letter at a counter. Never use a gazette to convert Oram into Oraon or the reverse.

No district in Jharkhand has a gazette counter, so the file goes from Ranchi, Jamshedpur, Dhanbad, Bokaro, Hazaribagh, Deoghar or anywhere else in the state to the Department of Publication, Civil Lines, Delhi 110054, and the notice publishes in Part IV of the Gazette of India. As reported in July 2025 the Finance Department stopped personal name change notifications from the Jharkhand Government Press with immediate effect, so there is no state alternative to fall back on.

The Eight Steps of a Name Spelling File Sent From Jharkhand

1

Settle the final name first

Write it out letter by letter, with the spacing you want, and then use exactly that in every paper. A corrigendum after publication is a second fee and a second wait.

2

Pick the category, then its proforma

For a surname spelling this is almost always the public notice for a wrongly written name, not a change of name, because you are not taking a new name. Twelve categories exist and only one is yours, and picking the wrong one is how files come back.

3

Type the proforma in duplicate

Two originals, signed in the old spelling, with two witnesses giving signature, full name, address and mobile number on both copies. On a wrongly written name the wrong spelling has to be quoted exactly as it is printed on each certificate named.

4

Get the affidavit attested at the right level

A notary for the ordinary change of name, and a First Class Magistrate of the concerned area where the different surname guidelines apply. This is the step that catches people out.

5

Publish and keep the original paper

One of the daily local leading newspapers, carrying both spellings in full, the father's name and the address. The whole original paper goes in the file, not a cutting.

6

Pay only through BharatKosh

The Non Tax Receipt Portal and nowhere else since October 2018. Select the Department of Publication by name, read the amount the portal shows on the day, pay in your own name and print the e-receipt.

7

Check every date, then post it yourself

Nothing in the file older than one year. Personally or by post or courier only, never through an agent or advocate. Photocopy everything first, because nothing sent in comes back.

8

Read the notice, then download it

Check both spellings letter by letter the day it publishes, note the page and issue number, and download the e-Gazette copy of that Part IV issue.

The Five Papers in the File, and What Is Checked in Each

The five papers of a Central Gazette minor's name change file and what the Department checks in each
The paperWhat is checked in it, clause by clause
1. The proforma, in duplicateThat it is the right category's format; the existing full name exactly as your documents carry it, surname included; the child's new full name exactly as you settled it; the father's or husband's name; the full address with pin code; the signature in the old name; two witnesses complete with signature, full name, address and mobile number
2. The affidavit or undertakingSigned by the parent applying; the same names and address as the proforma, word for word; attested at the level the category asks for, which is a First Class Magistrate for the adopting a different surname route; on Rs 100 non-judicial stamp paper as our safe default
3. The original newspaperThe original paper, not a cutting; the paper's name and date of publication visible; both of the child's names carried; the same spelling as the proforma; dated within the last year
4. Photographs, identity proof and any category paperTwo self attested passport photographs of each applicant and the child, which the minor guidelines ask for specifically; identity and address proof matching the proforma address; both witnesses' proofs; and whatever the category itself demands, such as a decree or a no objection certificate where the maiden surname requirement applies
5. The CD, its certificate and the BharatKosh receiptMS Word, without the witness portion, with the name of the Guardian typed in place of the signature, which is where a minor file differs from an adult one; the certificate that the hard copy and the soft copy are the same; the forwarding letter to the Controller of Publication with a telephone number and email; the e-receipt
The proforma is where files are lost, and there are twelve to choose from. A maiden surname file typed on the ordinary change of name form, or a change of name typed on a surname form, comes back. The Government charge already paid is not refunded, because BharatKosh payments are non-refundable. You then have six months to make good a shortcoming the Department points out, after which a fresh application with all new documents is required.
What to select on BharatKosh, field by field. Pay to the Department of Publication under the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, and pick the Ministry, the Pay and Accounts Office and the Drawing and Disbursing Officer by their names in the dropdown, never by a code copied off a website. The codes printed for this office on different websites do not agree with each other, and money paid into the wrong head cannot be traced to your file. Read the amount on the portal on the day you pay, because it is revised each financial year.
How to read the published notice before you rely on it. Open the e-Gazette copy and check five things: that it says Part IV; the date of publication; your old full name exactly as your documents carry it, with the surname spelt as it appears there; the child's new name, letter by letter; and the father's or husband's name and address. Then note the page number and the issue number, because that is what an office will quote back to you at verification.

The posting detail is on the sending the file to Delhi page, the wording on the proforma format page, the charge by category on the fee and undertaking page, the reasons files come back on the rejection reasons page, and the download on the download page.

What Settling an Oraon or Uraon Spelling Costs in Jharkhand

Cost and time for settling an Oraon or Uraon spelling across your documents
ItemCostTime
Community entry corrected against the notified OrderThe issuing office's own charges. No gazette charge at all. You are asking the office to match its own record to the notification, which is the cheapest thing on this pageA few weeks through the issuing office
Surname corrected where the spelling is already on a documentThe issuing office's charges per record, plus Rs 10 for an RTI application if a school register page has to be obtained that wayA few weeks per office, and they can run in parallel
One and the same person affidavitRs 100 non-judicial stamp paper and the notary. Accepted by banks, employers and colleges. Usually refused by boards, passport counters and recruitment panelsThe same day
Government printing chargeThe minor guidelines print Rs 1,700 for a change of name of a minor with effect from 01.04.2016 to 31.03.2017. For comparison the adult guidelines print Rs 1,100 for the same year, and Rs 3,500 for an Indian living abroad. Every category's guidelines add that the charge varies each financial year and from case to case, so treat these as the order of the amount. What BharatKosh shows on the payment screen the day you pay is the figure that countsPart IV publishes weekly, so allow several weeks from posting
AffidavitRs 100 non-judicial stamp paper plus the attestation. A notary is enough for an ordinary public notice. A First Class Magistrate is only for the adopting a different surname routeNotary the same day; a magistrate needs a planned court visit
NewspaperPaid to the paper, charged by lengthSame week
Post or courier to DelhiSent in your own name from any district, and keep the receiptA few days each way
Updating the records afterwardsAadhaar charges a fee per attempt with no refund, and the other offices have their own small chargesSeveral weeks across all of them
Our chargeQuoted on your papers before you pay anything, and confirmed in writing. We print no service price on any page of this site
Do not trust a figure printed on any website, including this one, on the day you pay. The Department's own guidelines say the printing charge varies each financial year and from case to case, so the figures above are what the published guidelines show for 2016 to 2017 and are given so you know the order of the amount, not the amount. What BharatKosh shows when you reach the payment screen is the one that counts. Read it there and pay that.

The honest total here is usually small, because the community entry is settled against a notification and the surname is settled against your own papers. What makes it expensive is never the Government. It is a family that converted a community name on somebody's advice and then had to defend it, or that corrected one person and left the rest. Read the papers first, decide once, move the whole family together. Our corrigendum page covers a second file, and name change cost the line items in full.

Myths About the Oraon and Uraon Spelling on Certificates

Common beliefs about the Oraon, Uraon and Oram spelling and what is actually correct
What people are toldWhat is actually so
Oraon, Uraon and Oram are three spellings of one wordOraon and Uraon are. Oram we could not support, and it is not inside the notified entry. We found an account of an Oram community in Jharkhand that used Oram as its own surname from the British period. Treat it as its own name
Uraon on a certificate makes it invalidNo. The Government of Jharkhand's own Tribal Welfare Research Institute records the community as also spelt Uraon. It is a spelling of the same name, not a defect
The spelling is whatever you preferNot for the community entry. That follows the Constitution (Scheduled Tribes) Order, which lists the Jharkhand community at entry 25 as Oraon, Dhangar (Oraon). Your own surname is a separate question
Change the Class 10 certificate so everything matchesUsually the wrong direction. That is the slowest and hardest record to change. Bring the newer records towards it instead, unless there is a strong reason not to
An office can simply correct Oram to OraonAsk in writing under what authority and against which document. On a community entry that is not a spelling fix, and you are entitled to know what it is being treated as
Kurukh is a different tribeIt is the community's own name for itself and the name of its Dravidian language. The Institute's line begins "The Kurukh or Oraon or Dhangar"
Dhangar has nothing to do with itIt sits inside the notified entry as Dhangar (Oraon), and the Institute records Dhangad or Dhangar as the name used in Maharashtra
Sort it out when the scrutiny asksThe worst moment, because the calendar stops being yours. Settle it while nothing is pending, which is also when it is cheapest
The two printouts that end most arguments. The notified entry for Jharkhand, and the Institute's sentence recording Uraon as an alternative spelling. Carry both, with the source named. You are then not asking an officer to believe you; you are showing them the Government's own words.

Key Terms in an Oraon Certificate Spelling Question

Key terms used when settling an Oraon or Uraon spelling on certificates
TermWhat it means in practice
Notified entryThe community as it is written in the Constitution (Scheduled Tribes) Order. For Jharkhand, entry 25 reads Oraon, Dhangar (Oraon). This is what an officer matches against
Community fieldThe line on a Scheduled Tribe certificate naming the tribe. Governed by the Order, not by family practice
SurnamePart of your own name, governed by your family's records. The Order never claimed to tell you how to spell it
KurukhThe community's own name for itself and the name of its Dravidian language. Appears first in the Institute's own description
DhangarCarried inside the notified entry as Dhangar (Oraon), and recorded as Dhangad or Dhangar in Maharashtra
Clan nameA name such as Tirkey or Lakra. In the Oram account these are replacing a common community surname, which is a change of name and not a correction
PattaAn old land document. Where it carries the family name it is among the oldest evidence you hold, and the entry is never altered
Anchor recordThe document everything else is judged against, which in practice is the Class 10 certificate
Admission registerThe school's own record of every student's name on admission. Older than the certificate and read during a Scheduled Tribe verification
CorrectionPutting a record right against a document you already hold, or against a notification. Cheap, quick, publishes nothing
Change of nameTaking a name no record carries. A different application with a different cost. Moving from a community surname to a clan name is this, not a correction
Received stampThe office's acknowledgement on your own copy. Without it, an application never happened

Oraon, Uraon or Oram: Frequently Asked Questions

Which is the correct spelling, Oraon or Uraon?+
For the community entry on a Scheduled Tribe certificate, the notified spelling is Oraon. The Constitution (Scheduled Tribes) Order lists the Jharkhand community at entry 25 as "Oraon, Dhangar (Oraon)". Uraon is not wrong though: the Government of Jharkhand's own Tribal Welfare Research Institute records the community as "also spelt Uraon". So one is the notified form and the other is a recognised spelling of the same name.
Is Oram the same as Oraon?+
We could not establish that, and we will not say it to make the answer tidy. Oram does not appear inside the notified entry, which reads only Oraon, Dhangar (Oraon). What we did find is an account of an Oram community in Jharkhand that used Oram as a surname from the British period, visible in old land documents, and is now moving towards clan names such as Tirkey and Lakra. That account treats Oram as its own group. So do not convert Oram into Oraon, or the reverse, as a spelling fix.
My certificate says Uraon. Do I have to get it changed?+
Not urgently, and nothing about it makes the certificate invalid. But if the correction is easy at the issuing office, the notified spelling is the safer one on the community field, because an officer can match Oraon against the Order in a second. Take the Order's entry and the Institute's sentence with you, and never open a correction while a verification is already running.
What is the difference between the community field and my surname?+
The community field names a notified category and follows the Order. Your surname is part of your own name and follows your family's records, starting with the Class 10 certificate. Mixing the two up is the single biggest cause of confusion at a counter, and it is why somebody may tell you to change your surname to match a notification that was never about your surname.
Where does Kurukh fit in?+
Kurukh is the community's own name for itself and the name of its Dravidian language. The Tribal Welfare Research Institute's own description opens "The Kurukh or Oraon or Dhangar ... also spelt Uraon or Oraon". You will meet Kurukh in language and cultural contexts far more than on a certificate, where the notified word is Oraon.
And Dhangar?+
It is inside the notified entry itself, written as Dhangar (Oraon). The Institute also records that in Maharashtra the community is known as Dhangad or Dhangar. So it is not a stray word somebody added; it is part of how the entry is written for Jharkhand.
Should I change my Class 10 certificate to match?+
Usually not. That is the slowest and hardest record to change, corrected against the school's own admission register, through the school, and once printed it becomes a board correction matter. In almost every case it is easier to let the Class 10 certificate lead and bring the newer records into line with it.
In what order do I fix the records?+
Decide the direction first and write it down. Then the school record, then the Scheduled Tribe certificate, then the birth record, and the Aadhaar and PAN last of all. They are matched against the school record at verification, so correcting them first creates the mismatch you were removing.
Do my brothers, sisters and parents have to be done too?+
Yes, if you want the problem solved rather than moved. A panel compares the father's name printed on your certificate with his own documents, so the family has to agree on paper. Where a published notice is genuinely needed, one notice can name several certificates in one family instead of one file each.
Will this matter at an ST certificate verification?+
It can, and that is why it is worth settling while nothing is pending. A verification is not just a check that the certificate is genuine. The Supreme Court's directions send a vigilance officer to examine school records and birth registration and to examine the parent, guardian and candidate. A community entry written exactly as the Order writes it takes one question off that table.
Do I need a gazette for any of this?+
Almost never. A community entry is corrected at the issuing office against the notified entry, and a surname spelling that already appears on a document you hold is a correction too. A gazette is for a name that is on no document at all. And it should never be used to convert Oram into Oraon or the reverse, because that is not a spelling question.
What does it cost?+
Usually very little. The issuing office's own charges for each record corrected, plus Rs 10 if an RTI application is needed to obtain a school register page. No gazette charge on this route. We do not print office, school or certificate charges, because they vary and we have not verified them everywhere. What makes this expensive is a community name rewritten on bad advice and then defended.

Who wrote and checked this page

Written and maintained by the Jharkhandnamechange.com documentation desk, led by founder Vipin Chauhan, B.Tech LL.B, with 5+ years filing with the Department of Publication. The notified entry is taken from the Constitution (Scheduled Tribes) Order, 1950, as amended, where the list for Jharkhand carries the community at entry 25 as "Oraon, Dhangar (Oraon)", alongside Munda, Patar, Tamaria (Tamadia) at entry 24, Santal at entry 27 and Ho at entry 13. The alternative spelling is taken from the Tribal Welfare Research Institute, Jharkhand, which writes that "The Kurukh or Oraon or Dhangar ... also spelt Uraon or Oraon, are a Dravidian ethnic group inhabiting the Indian states of Jharkhand, West Bengal, Odisha and Chhattisgarh", and which also records Dhangad or Dhangar as the name used in Maharashtra. On Oram we are deliberately incomplete rather than confident: we did not find Oram recorded as a spelling of Oraon anywhere, and it is not inside the notified entry. What we found instead was a published account of an Oram community in Jharkhand using Oram as a surname from the British period, recorded in old land documents, now shifting towards clan names such as Tirkey and Lakra with a compromise form like Sagar Tirkey (Oram). That is a heritage account and not a Government record, and it treats Oram as its own group, so this page tells you not to convert one into the other rather than telling you they are the same. The position that a Scheduled Tribe verification examines school records and the parents comes from the Supreme Court's directions in Kumari Madhuri Patil against Additional Commissioner, Tribal Development, decided 2 September 1994, which are directions of general application from 1994; the machinery operating in Jharkhand today is set up by the State under its own orders, which we have not verified and therefore do not state. We do not print office, school or certificate charges, which vary. We are a documentation consultancy and not advocates, and a contested Scheduled Tribe claim needs legal advice rather than documentation help. Who we are is on the about page.

Official Sources on the Oraon Entry and Certificate Records

Oraon, Uraon and Oram in Eight Lines

The short version

  • The notified entry for Jharkhand is Oraon, Dhangar (Oraon), at entry 25.
  • So Oraon is the safest form for the community field on a certificate.
  • Uraon is the same name, and the State's own institute records it as such.
  • Oram we could not establish as a spelling of Oraon, so do not convert it.
  • The community field follows the Order. Your surname follows your papers.
  • The Class 10 certificate leads on the surname, as it does everywhere.
  • School record, then certificates, then Aadhaar and PAN last of all.
  • Carry two printouts: the notified entry and the Institute's sentence.

Send us the certificate and we will tell you whether anything needs touching at all.

Scheduled Tribe certificate first, then the Class 10 certificate, the school admission form, the birth record and any old patta. We will say plainly where we are sure and where we are not.
