PMJJBY and PMSBY Claim Name Mismatch in Jharkhand: Deceased, Nominee and Documents
Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana pays Rs 2,00,000 on the death of a member, and the claim is made through the bank or post office where the member's account was. LIC's claims procedure says the nominee submits it "to the concerned bank / post office branch, preferably within 30 days from the date of the death", with "Aadhaar number and PAN number of deceased member and nominee / appointee / claimant". So a name that differs between the bank record, the death certificate and the nominee's papers can hold up the money. Most of these mismatches are fixed with documents, not a Gazette notice. We publish Gazette notices, and we say this first.
Five points, in the order you will need them. First, file the claim at the bank or post office where the member's account was, preferably within 30 days. Second, find which name is wrong: the deceased's name on the death certificate, or the nominee's name in the bank record. Third, a wrong death certificate is corrected by the Registrar, not by Gazette. Fourth, a nominee whose name differs, for example a married daughter, links the names with a marriage certificate or an affidavit. Fifth, if there is no nominee, LIC's procedure pays legal heirs "on production of Succession Certificate/ Legal Heir certificate". We publish Gazette notices, and we say plainly that most of these cases need none.
How a PMJJBY Claim Works, and Where Names Are Checked
LIC's PMJJBY claims procedure says the claim is made by "the nominee (or in case the nominee is a minor, his/her appointee... and in case of no nomination or the nominee pre-deceasing insured member, the claimant legal heirs)". It lists the documents below.
| Document | Where a name is checked |
|---|---|
| "Proof of death of the insured member" | The deceased's name against the bank record |
| Aadhaar and PAN of the deceased and the nominee | Both names, against the bank record |
| "KYC document in respect of the nominee" | The nominee's name as the bank recorded it |
| Passbook, statement or cancelled cheque | The account the money goes to |
| "Advance receipt for discharge of claim" | Signed by the claimant |
Which Name Mismatch Is Holding Up Your PMJJBY or PMSBY Claim
Claim delays over names usually fall into a few kinds. This sorting is ours, built from the documents the procedure asks for.
| What does not match | What it usually is |
|---|---|
| Deceased's name: death certificate against bank record | Often a spelling slip on the death certificate |
| Nominee's name: bank record against nominee's Aadhaar | Often a short name, a nickname, or a surname after marriage |
| Relationship wrong in the bank record | A bank record error; the bank decides |
| No nominee at all | Not a name problem; legal heirs claim |
How to Fix Each Name Mismatch in a PMJJBY or PMSBY Claim
Each mismatch has its own office and its own paper. This is our practical advice, since the procedure lists documents but not how to reconcile names.
| Mismatch | What usually fixes it |
|---|---|
| Death certificate misspelt | Registrar correction. See death certificate correction |
| Nominee is a married daughter with a new surname | Her marriage certificate links the names |
| Nominee recorded by a short name | A one-and-the-same affidavit by the nominee. See spelling correction affidavit |
| Deceased's name differs across his own papers | An affidavit by the claimant, with his Aadhaar and bank record |
| Bank itself recorded the nominee wrongly | Ask the bank to verify from its nomination form |
PMJJBY Claim With No Nominee: Legal Heir or Succession Certificate
LIC's procedure says that with no nominee, "the admissible claim amount shall be paid to the legal heirs of the insured on production of Succession Certificate/ Legal Heir certificate from the Competent Court/authority". Names on that certificate must match too.
| Situation | What usually applies |
|---|---|
| No nominee registered | Legal heir or succession certificate |
| Nominee died before the member | Legal heirs claim, per the procedure |
| Nominee is a minor | The appointee claims |
| Heir's name differs on the certificate | Correct it with the issuing authority first |
Does a PMJJBY or PMSBY Claim Name Mismatch Need a Gazette Notice?
Usually not. The procedure asks for proof of death, Aadhaar, PAN and KYC. It does not name a Gazette notice. Most mismatches are slips, short names or married surnames, fixed with a corrected certificate, a marriage certificate or an affidavit.
| Situation | What usually applies |
|---|---|
| Death certificate slip | Registrar correction. No Gazette |
| Married nominee | Marriage certificate. No Gazette |
| Short name or nickname | Affidavit. No Gazette |
| Nominee genuinely changed name | A Central Gazette notice may help the nominee's own KYC |

Central Gazette Process for a Name From Jharkhand, and Where It Fits a PMJJBY or PMSBY Claim
No district in Jharkhand has a gazette counter, so a genuine file goes from Ranchi, Jamshedpur, Dhanbad, Bokaro, Hazaribagh, Deoghar or anywhere else in the state to the Department of Publication, Civil Lines, Delhi 110054, and the notice publishes in Part IV of the Gazette of India. As reported in July 2025 the Finance Department stopped personal name change notifications from the Jharkhand Government Press with immediate effect, so there is no state alternative to fall back on.
The Eight Steps of a Name File Sent From Jharkhand
Settle the final name first
Letter by letter, with the spacing you want, and then use exactly that everywhere, Aadhaar included. A corrigendum after publication is a second fee and a second wait.
Pick the category, then its proforma
A genuine change of name is change of Name Adult or Major. A wrongly typed spelling is the public notice for a wrongly written name. Twelve categories exist and only one is yours.
Type the proforma in duplicate
Two originals with two witnesses giving signature, full name, address and mobile number on both copies. A change of name is signed in the old name; a public notice is signed in your own name.
Fill the employment field if it is a change of name
The adult proforma asks for the post of the applicant and the office or company name. A student or a homemaker should still complete it rather than leaving it blank, because a blank field brings the file back.
Publish and keep the original paper
One of the daily local leading newspapers, carrying both names in full, the father or husband name and the residential address. The whole original paper goes in the file, not a cutting.
Pay only through BharatKosh
The Non Tax Receipt Portal and nowhere else since October 2018. Select the Department of Publication by name, read the amount the portal shows on the day, pay in your own name and print the e-receipt.
Check every date, then post it yourself
Nothing in the file older than one year. Personally or by post or courier only, never through an agent or advocate. Photocopy everything first, because nothing sent in comes back.
Read the notice, then update in the right order
Check every word the day it publishes and download the e-Gazette copy. Then update the nominee's Aadhaar and PAN, and give the notice to the bank with the claim.
The Five Papers in the File, and What Is Checked in Each
| The paper | What is checked in it, clause by clause |
|---|---|
| 1. The proforma, in duplicate | That it is the right category format; the existing full name exactly as your documents carry it; the new full name exactly as settled; the father or husband name; the full address with pin code; the post and office or company name where it is a change of name; the signature in the right name for the category; two witnesses complete with signature, full name, address and mobile number |
| 2. The affidavit or undertaking | The same names and address as the proforma, word for word, with wording matching the category. On Rs 100 non-judicial stamp paper as our safe default |
| 3. The original newspaper | The original paper, not a cutting; the paper name and date of publication visible; both names carried; the father or husband name and residential address; dated within the last year |
| 4. Photographs, identity proof and any category paper | Two self attested passport photographs; self attested identity and address proof matching the proforma address; both witnesses proofs; and, in a public notice file, the attested photocopy of the connected document carrying the error |
| 5. The CD, its certificate and the BharatKosh receipt | MS Word, without the witness portion, with the name typed in place of the signature; the certificate that the hard copy and the soft copy are the same; the forwarding letter to the Controller of Publication with a telephone number and email; the e-receipt |
The posting detail is on the sending the file to Delhi page, the change of name wording on the proforma format page and the public notice wording on the public notice proforma page, the charge by category on the fee and undertaking page, the reasons files come back on the rejection reasons page, and the download on the download page.
What Fixing a PMJJBY or PMSBY Claim Name Mismatch Costs
Filing a claim itself does not appear to carry a fee in the procedures we read. The costs are the documents that fix the mismatch, and usually not a Gazette notice.

|---|---|
| Filing the claim | No fee named in the procedures we read |
| Death certificate correction | Set by the Registrar; small fees. Ask for a receipt |
| Affidavit | Stamp paper, Rs 100 as our safe default, plus the notary's fee |
| Legal heir or succession certificate | Set by the authority or court. We print no figure |
| Gazette notice | Usually not needed |
| What we charge | Quoted on the call. For telling you which paper fixes it, nothing |
