Jan Dhan Account Name Mismatch in Jharkhand: Fixing the Name for DBT, RuPay Insurance and Re-KYC
Many families in Jharkhand opened a Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) account at a camp, sometimes with a short name, a Hindi spelling or a thumb impression. Years later that name matters. Scheme money comes into this account by DBT. The free RuPay card carries an accident insurance cover of Rs 2 lakh. And banks ran a re-KYC campaign from 1 July to 30 September 2025 for older accounts. If the account name does not match Aadhaar, each of these can stall. The fix is at your branch, with Aadhaar. We publish Gazette notices, and we say this first: a spelling slip in a Jan Dhan account needs no Gazette notice.
Five points, in the order you will need them. First, compare your passbook name with Aadhaar, letter by letter. Second, take Aadhaar to your branch and ask it to correct the account name and complete your KYC; this is our advice. Third, if it is a "small account" opened without documents, convert it to a full account with Aadhaar. Fourth, check the nominee's name, because the RuPay accident cover is paid to the nominee. Fifth, a spelling slip here does not need a Gazette. We publish Gazette notices, and we say this plainly.
What a Jan Dhan Account Gives You, and Why the Name Matters
The points below come from PIB's release of 28 August 2025 on eleven years of PMJDY, and SBI's PMJDY FAQ. Where a point is our own reading, we say so.
| Point | What the source shows |
|---|---|
| Account type | A basic bank account with "zero balance requirements and no maintenance charges", per PIB |
| Card and insurance | A free RuPay debit card with an "accident insurance cover of Rs 2 lakh", per PIB |
| Overdraft | Up to Rs 10,000, for one account holder per household after six months of satisfactory conduct, per SBI |
| Opening with Aadhaar | "If Aadhaar Card/Aadhaar Number ... is available, then no other documents are required", per SBI |
| Small account | Opened on a self-attested photo and signature or thumb print; balance up to Rs 50,000, credits up to Rs 1 lakh a year, valid 12 months, extendable once, per SBI |
| Insurance condition | At least one card transaction within 90 days before the accident, per SBI |
| Re-KYC campaign | Camps from 1 July to 30 September 2025, aiming at every gram panchayat, per PIB |
An account opened with Aadhaar should carry the Aadhaar name. One opened as a small account may carry whatever name was written at the camp. That is where most mismatches start. This is our reading.
Which Jan Dhan Name Case You Have
Jan Dhan name problems fall into a few kinds. This sorting is ours, based on the passbooks families send us.
| What does not match | What it usually is |
|---|---|
| Passbook name differs from Aadhaar | Written at a camp in a short or Hindi form |
| Small account never converted | Opened without documents, never updated |
| Name before marriage | Opened before marriage, Aadhaar updated later |
| Tribal surname spelt differently | Tirkey and Tirki, Hembrom and Hembram, and the like |
| Nominee's name wrong or missing | Written loosely at opening |
| Account frozen for KYC | Re-KYC not done in time |
| Genuine change of name | A deliberate new name, not yet in the bank |
How to Correct the Name in a Jan Dhan Account
A Jan Dhan account is an ordinary savings account with extra features. The branch corrects its name like any other account. The table below is our practical advice.
| Situation | What we usually advise |
|---|---|
| Passbook differs from Aadhaar | A written request at the branch with Aadhaar. See letter to bank manager |
| Small account | Give Aadhaar to convert it to a full account in the Aadhaar name |
| Name before marriage | Marriage certificate and Aadhaar. See name change after marriage |
| Tribal surname spelt differently | See tribal surname spelling correction |
| Hindi and English spellings | See Hindi to English spelling |
| Nominee's name wrong | File a fresh nomination. See nominee name mismatch |
| Genuine change of name | A Gazette notice, then Aadhaar, then the branch |
Many Jan Dhan holders bank through a Bank Mitra or customer service point in the village. They can take cash in and out, but a name correction usually needs the branch. Ask the Bank Mitra which branch holds your account. This is our advice.
When you go, carry Aadhaar, the passbook and the RuPay card. Ask the branch to update the name and complete KYC in one visit, and to confirm your Aadhaar is seeded for DBT. One visit can fix three things. This is our advice.
Jan Dhan Account Name, DBT Payments, RuPay Insurance and Overdraft
A Jan Dhan account is often where scheme money lands. The right name keeps it flowing. This list is our advice.
| Where it matters | What to watch |
|---|---|
| DBT seeding | The account must be seeded to your Aadhaar. See DBT Aadhaar seeding |
| Maiyan Samman | See Maiyan Samman name mismatch |
| RuPay accident cover | Paid to the nominee; the nominee's name should be right |
| PMJJBY and PMSBY | Often linked to the same account. See PMJJBY and PMSBY claims |
| Atal Pension Yojana | See Atal Pension Yojana |
| Overdraft | Up to Rs 10,000 after six months of good conduct, per SBI |
Does a Jan Dhan Account Name Mismatch Need a Gazette Notice?
No, for a spelling slip, a short name, a Hindi spelling or a name before marriage. The branch corrects these with Aadhaar and, where needed, a marriage certificate. A Gazette notice is for a genuine change of name, and even then the branch still needs a request.
| Situation | What usually applies |
|---|---|
| Camp spelling differs from Aadhaar | Branch correction. No Gazette |
| Small account to full account | Aadhaar at the branch. No Gazette |
| Name before marriage | Marriage certificate. No Gazette |
| Nominee's name wrong | Fresh nomination. No Gazette |
| Genuine change of name | A Central Gazette notice, then Aadhaar, then the branch |

Central Gazette Process for a Name From Jharkhand, and Where It Fits a Jan Dhan Account
No district in Jharkhand has a gazette counter, so a genuine file goes from Ranchi, Jamshedpur, Dhanbad, Bokaro, Hazaribagh, Deoghar or anywhere else in the state to the Department of Publication, Civil Lines, Delhi 110054, and the notice publishes in Part IV of the Gazette of India. As reported in July 2025 the Finance Department stopped personal name change notifications from the Jharkhand Government Press with immediate effect, so there is no state alternative to fall back on.
The Eight Steps of a Name File Sent From Jharkhand
Settle the final name first
Letter by letter, with the spacing you want, and then use exactly that everywhere, Aadhaar included. A corrigendum after publication is a second fee and a second wait.
Pick the category, then its proforma
A genuine change of name is change of Name Adult or Major. A wrongly typed spelling is the public notice for a wrongly written name. Twelve categories exist and only one is yours.
Type the proforma in duplicate
Two originals with two witnesses giving signature, full name, address and mobile number on both copies. A change of name is signed in the old name; a public notice is signed in your own name.
Fill the employment field if it is a change of name
The adult proforma asks for the post of the applicant and the office or company name. A student or a homemaker should still complete it rather than leaving it blank, because a blank field brings the file back.
Publish and keep the original paper
One of the daily local leading newspapers, carrying both names in full, the father or husband name and the residential address. The whole original paper goes in the file, not a cutting.
Pay only through BharatKosh
The Non Tax Receipt Portal and nowhere else since October 2018. Select the Department of Publication by name, read the amount the portal shows on the day, pay in your own name and print the e-receipt.
Check every date, then post it yourself
Nothing in the file older than one year. Personally or by post or courier only, never through an agent or advocate. Photocopy everything first, because nothing sent in comes back.
Read the notice, then update in the right order
Check every word the day it publishes and download the e-Gazette copy. Then update Aadhaar and PAN, and then your Jan Dhan account at the branch, with the original Gazette notification.
The Five Papers in the File, and What Is Checked in Each
| The paper | What is checked in it, clause by clause |
|---|---|
| 1. The proforma, in duplicate | That it is the right category format; the existing full name exactly as your documents carry it; the new full name exactly as settled; the father or husband name; the full address with pin code; the post and office or company name where it is a change of name; the signature in the right name for the category; two witnesses complete with signature, full name, address and mobile number |
| 2. The affidavit or undertaking | The same names and address as the proforma, word for word, with wording matching the category. On Rs 100 non-judicial stamp paper as our safe default |
| 3. The original newspaper | The original paper, not a cutting; the paper name and date of publication visible; both names carried; the father or husband name and residential address; dated within the last year |
| 4. Photographs, identity proof and any category paper | Two self attested passport photographs; self attested identity and address proof matching the proforma address; both witnesses proofs; and, in a public notice file, the attested photocopy of the connected document carrying the error |
| 5. The CD, its certificate and the BharatKosh receipt | MS Word, without the witness portion, with the name typed in place of the signature; the certificate that the hard copy and the soft copy are the same; the forwarding letter to the Controller of Publication with a telephone number and email; the e-receipt |
The posting detail is on the sending the file to Delhi page, the change of name wording on the proforma format page and the public notice wording on the public notice proforma page, the charge by category on the fee and undertaking page, the reasons files come back on the rejection reasons page, and the download on the download page.
What a Jan Dhan Name Correction Costs in Jharkhand
The costs are small: perhaps an Aadhaar update fee and an affidavit. A Jan Dhan account itself has no maintenance charges, per PIB. Not a Gazette notice, for a slip.
