GATE's own FAQ: no changes to issued score cards • A name that does not match the photo ID marks the form DEFECTIVE • After marriage, the old-name ID plus an affidavit is accepted

GATE Application Name Mismatch in Jharkhand: GOAPS Correction, Photo ID and the Scorecard

Engineering students from BIT Mesra, NIT Jamshedpur, IIT (ISM) Dhanbad and colleges across Jharkhand apply for GATE on the GOAPS portal, and later use the scorecard for M.Tech admission and PSU jobs. The GATE 2026 FAQ, published by IIT Guwahati, is plain about the scorecard: "It is not possible to carry out any change in the data of issued score cards." So a name slip must be caught before the scorecard is issued. The same FAQ says corrections can be made "in a given time duration at later stage by furnishing supporting documents." We publish Gazette notices, and we say this first: a GATE spelling slip needs no Gazette notice.

5Photo IDs GATE 2026 accepted for Indian candidates
0Changes possible to an issued scorecard, per the FAQ
Rs 500Name and date of birth correction fee for GATE 2027, as reported
0Gazette notices needed for a spelling slip
Quick answer

Five points, in the order you will need them. First, type your name exactly as on the photo ID you upload; a mismatch can mark the form DEFECTIVE, per the GATE FAQ. Second, if you are married and your ID is in your old name, upload it with an affidavit and carry both to the exam. Third, if you spot a slip, use the correction period with supporting documents. Fourth, do it before the scorecard, because an issued scorecard cannot be changed. Fifth, if your degree carries a different name, fix the degree at the university. We publish Gazette notices, and we say plainly that a GATE spelling slip needs none.

What the GATE FAQ Says About Names, Photo ID and Corrections

GATE application name mismatch in Jharkhand, with the GOAPS form, a photo ID and the GATE scorecard side by side
Fix the name before the scorecard is issued.

The GATE 2026 FAQ, published by IIT Guwahati, answers most name questions directly. Each GATE year has its own organising institute and FAQ, so check the one for your year.

What the GATE 2026 FAQ says about names
PointWhat the FAQ says
Valid photo IDs"Aadhaar-UID (preferable), Passport, PAN Card, Voter ID, and Driving License"
Correcting a spellingCorrections "in a given time duration at later stage by furnishing supporting documents"
Name mismatch with the ID"Your application will be marked DEFECTIVE." You are told to rectify it
Name changed after marriage"You can upload the photo ID with old name along with an affidavit." Carry both to the exam hall
Issued scorecards"It is not possible to carry out any change in the data of issued score cards."
The scorecard is final. Once issued, the FAQ says no change is possible. Every name slip must be fixed in the correction period, before results. There is no second chance after that, as far as we found.

Which GATE Name Mismatch You Have

GATE name problems usually fall into a few kinds. This sorting is ours.

Kinds of GATE name mismatch
What does not matchWhat it usually is
Form name against the uploaded photo IDA typing slip, or the wrong ID uploaded
Married name in the form, old name on the IDA change by marriage
Parent's name slipA typing slip in the parent field
Form correct, degree has a different spellingA degree record problem
Photo ID itself carries the wrong nameAn ID record to fix at its source
Slip found after the scorecardThe FAQ says issued scorecards cannot be changed
Choose the ID before you type the name. Pick the ID you will upload and carry, Aadhaar preferably, and type the name exactly as it reads there. That one habit prevents a DEFECTIVE mark.

How to Handle a GATE Name Mismatch Before the Scorecard

The correction period is the route the FAQ describes. This table is our practical advice, built on that FAQ.

Handling each kind of GATE name mismatch
SituationWhat we usually advise
Slip in your nameCorrect it in the correction period, with supporting documents, per the FAQ
Form marked DEFECTIVERectify when your zone contacts you, by uploading the right ID or fixing the field
Married, ID in old nameUpload the old-name ID with an affidavit, and carry both. See name change affidavit
Photo ID itself is wrongFix it at the source. See Aadhaar or PAN
Degree has a different spellingFix it at the university. See university degree correction
Slip found after the scorecardThe FAQ says no change. Keep an affidavit ready for admissions and employers
Watch your email and phone. The FAQ says a DEFECTIVE form is notified "by e-mail, SMS or phone call from your respective Zone". Reply quickly, because the fix has a time limit.

GATE Scorecard Name in M.Tech Admission and PSU Recruitment

The GATE scorecard travels far: M.Tech admission, PSU recruitment and some PhD admissions. Each of these compares it with your degree and ID.

Where a GATE scorecard name mismatch can show later
WhereWhat usually applies
M.Tech admissionThe scorecard is read with your degree. A mismatch may be questioned
PSU recruitmentDocument verification compares every paper
State jobs in JharkhandSee JSSC and JPSC verification
Scorecard itselfCannot be changed once issued, per the FAQ
If the scorecard has a slip, prepare in advance. Keep a one-and-the-same affidavit linking the scorecard name to your degree and ID. Whether it is accepted is the institute's or employer's decision. We print no admission or PSU rule we did not verify.

Does a GATE Name Mismatch Need a Gazette Notice?

No, for a slip. The GATE FAQ asks for supporting documents, and for a married name, an affidavit. A Gazette notice is for a genuine change of name.

When a Gazette notice is relevant to GATE
SituationWhat usually applies
Form spelling slipCorrection period. No Gazette
Married name, old-name IDAffidavit, per the FAQ. No Gazette
Degree spelling slipUniversity correction. No Gazette
Genuine new nameA Central Gazette notice, then Aadhaar and PAN, then apply in the new name
Our commercial interest, stated plainly. We publish Gazette notices. For a GATE spelling slip, you do not need one, and no candidate should be sold one for it. Where you have genuinely changed your name, it goes in the Gazette of India, Part IV, since the Jharkhand state press stopped personal notices in July 2025, as reported.

How to Avoid a GATE Name Mismatch, Step by Step

1

Choose the photo ID you will upload

Aadhaar preferably.

2

Type your name exactly as on that ID

Letter by letter.

3

Check your degree matches too

Before you submit.

4

Married? Prepare the affidavit

With the old-name ID.

5

Download the submitted form

Read every field.

6

Answer any DEFECTIVE notice fast

Email, SMS or call.

7

Use the correction period

With supporting documents.

8

Save proof of the correction

Screenshot and receipt.

9

Check the admit card

Every letter.

10

Check the scorecard

Keep an affidavit ready if needed.

The one rule that holds the whole job together. Fix every slip before results. An issued scorecard cannot be changed, per the FAQ.

Central Gazette Process for a Name From Jharkhand, and Where It Fits a GATE Candidate

Read this before the rest of this section, because a GATE spelling slip never needs it. A form slip is fixed in the correction period; a married name by an affidavit, per the GATE FAQ. No Gazette notice is needed for those. It is printed in full so you recognise at once when a notice is being sold to a candidate who does not need one.

No district in Jharkhand has a gazette counter, so a genuine file goes from Ranchi, Jamshedpur, Dhanbad, Bokaro, Hazaribagh, Deoghar or anywhere else in the state to the Department of Publication, Civil Lines, Delhi 110054, and the notice publishes in Part IV of the Gazette of India. As reported in July 2025 the Finance Department stopped personal name change notifications from the Jharkhand Government Press with immediate effect, so there is no state alternative to fall back on.

The Eight Steps of a Name File Sent From Jharkhand

1

Settle the final name first

Letter by letter, with the spacing you want, and then use exactly that everywhere, Aadhaar included. A corrigendum after publication is a second fee and a second wait.

2

Pick the category, then its proforma

A genuine change of name is change of Name Adult or Major. A wrongly typed spelling is the public notice for a wrongly written name. Twelve categories exist and only one is yours.

3

Type the proforma in duplicate

Two originals with two witnesses giving signature, full name, address and mobile number on both copies. A change of name is signed in the old name; a public notice is signed in your own name.

4

Fill the employment field if it is a change of name

The adult proforma asks for the post of the applicant and the office or company name. A student or a homemaker should still complete it rather than leaving it blank, because a blank field brings the file back.

5

Publish and keep the original paper

One of the daily local leading newspapers, carrying both names in full, the father or husband name and the residential address. The whole original paper goes in the file, not a cutting.

6

Pay only through BharatKosh

The Non Tax Receipt Portal and nowhere else since October 2018. Select the Department of Publication by name, read the amount the portal shows on the day, pay in your own name and print the e-receipt.

7

Check every date, then post it yourself

Nothing in the file older than one year. Personally or by post or courier only, never through an agent or advocate. Photocopy everything first, because nothing sent in comes back.

8

Read the notice, then update in the right order

Check every word the day it publishes and download the e-Gazette copy. Then update Aadhaar and PAN, and apply for GATE in the new name.

The Five Papers in the File, and What Is Checked in Each

The five papers of a Central Gazette name file from Jharkhand and what the Department checks in each
The paperWhat is checked in it, clause by clause
1. The proforma, in duplicateThat it is the right category format; the existing full name exactly as your documents carry it; the new full name exactly as settled; the father or husband name; the full address with pin code; the post and office or company name where it is a change of name; the signature in the right name for the category; two witnesses complete with signature, full name, address and mobile number
2. The affidavit or undertakingThe same names and address as the proforma, word for word, with wording matching the category. On Rs 100 non-judicial stamp paper as our safe default
3. The original newspaperThe original paper, not a cutting; the paper name and date of publication visible; both names carried; the father or husband name and residential address; dated within the last year
4. Photographs, identity proof and any category paperTwo self attested passport photographs; self attested identity and address proof matching the proforma address; both witnesses proofs; and, in a public notice file, the attested photocopy of the connected document carrying the error
5. The CD, its certificate and the BharatKosh receiptMS Word, without the witness portion, with the name typed in place of the signature; the certificate that the hard copy and the soft copy are the same; the forwarding letter to the Controller of Publication with a telephone number and email; the e-receipt
The proforma is where files are lost, and there are twelve to choose from. A wrongly typed spelling filed on the change of name form declares henceforth be known as, claiming a change you never made. The Government charge already paid is not refunded, because BharatKosh payments are non-refundable. You then have six months to make good a shortcoming the Department points out, after which a fresh application with all new documents is required.
What to select on BharatKosh, field by field. Pay to the Department of Publication under the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, and pick the Ministry, the Pay and Accounts Office and the Drawing and Disbursing Officer by their names in the dropdown, never by a code copied off a website. The codes printed for this office on different websites do not agree with each other, and money paid into the wrong head cannot be traced to your file. Read the amount on the portal on the day you pay, because it is revised each financial year.
What a Gazette notice will not do for GATE. It will not change an issued scorecard; the FAQ says nothing can. It links old and new names, and nothing more. Since we publish these notices, the honest version is this: for a GATE spelling slip, you need none. Our name correction against name change page explains the categories.

The posting detail is on the sending the file to Delhi page, the change of name wording on the proforma format page and the public notice wording on the public notice proforma page, the charge by category on the fee and undertaking page, the reasons files come back on the rejection reasons page, and the download on the download page.

What Fixing a GATE Name Mismatch Costs

For GATE 2027, Sarvgyan reports a Rs 500 correction fee for name and date of birth. We could not confirm it on the organising institute's own site, so treat it as reported. It is not a Gazette notice.

Who wrote and checked this page

Written and maintained by the Jharkhandnamechange.com documentation desk, led by founder Vipin Chauhan, B.Tech LL.B, with 5+ years filing with the Department of Publication. The rules on this page are quoted from the GATE 2026 FAQ published by IIT Guwahati: the valid photo IDs, corrections with supporting documents, the DEFECTIVE mark, the married-name affidavit, and that issued scorecards cannot be changed. The GATE 2027 correction fee is as reported by Sarvgyan. Three limits are declared openly on the page itself. First, we could not confirm the GATE 2027 fee on the organising institute's own site. Second, we print no M.Tech or PSU rule on accepting an affidavit. Third, which paper to fix is our advice. We publish Gazette notices, and this page says plainly that a GATE spelling slip needs none. We are a documentation consultancy and not advocates, not an IIT or IISc, not a PSU, and not the Department of Publication. Who we are is on the about page.
