Two parts, and you only chose one of them • The other came from your Aadhaar • And this is the one record you are allowed to delete

Name Change in ABHA Health ID in Jharkhand

An ABHA is an Ayushman Bharat Health Account, and it has two parts that people constantly mix up. One is the ABHA number, which the Government's own health portal describes as "a 14 digit number that will uniquely identify you as a participant in India's digital healthcare ecosystem". The other is the ABHA address, described there as "a unique identifier (self declared username) that enables you to share and access your health records digitally", written in the form of a username followed by @abdm. The first one carries your name and you did not type it. The second one is the only thing on the account you actually chose. Work out which of the two is wrong before you do anything, because they have completely different answers.

14Digits in an ABHA number, and none of them is your name
2Parts to an ABHA, and only one of them is yours to pick
3Routes out of a wrong ABHA, which no other record gives you
0Gazette notices an ABHA by itself ever needs
Quick answer

In almost every case the name in your ABHA is the name in your Aadhaar, so the work is at Aadhaar and not at the health account. The reason is in how the account is made. The Government's health portal sets out the creation steps as entering the Aadhaar number, verifying the one time password sent to the phone linked with that Aadhaar, entering a mobile number to link with the ABHA, verifying a second one time password, and then creating the ABHA address. Your name never gets typed anywhere in that list. It arrives with the Aadhaar. So a misspelt ABHA is a misspelt Aadhaar wearing a different shirt. The official ABHA application, published by the National Health Authority, offers an "Option to Edit Profile details including address and update the mobile no or email with respective OTP validation", and you should notice what is not in that list. It is the same pattern this website has now found in one record after another. And then there is the part that makes this page different from every other page here. The Government's own description of the ABHA says "You can participate at your own free will and choose to create your ABHA number voluntarily. Also, at any time, you can also request for permanent deletion or temporary deactivation." You cannot delete a ration card, a land record or a job card. This is the one record on this website you are allowed to walk away from, which gives you three routes instead of the usual one. Read the rest of this page before you take the third one, because deleting an account that already carries your hospital records is not a spelling correction, it is a different decision altogether.

ABHA Number and ABHA Address: Two Different Things With Two Different Answers

Name change in ABHA health ID in Jharkhand
One account, two identifiers. Only one of them was ever yours to type.

People telephone us and say the name in their health card is wrong. The first question we ask back is which name, because an ABHA carries two identifiers and they behave in opposite ways.

The two identifiers in an Ayushman Bharat Health Account and how each one behaves
The ABHA numberThe ABHA address
Described on the Government's health portal as "a 14 digit number that will uniquely identify you as a participant in India's digital healthcare ecosystem"Described there as "a unique identifier (self declared username) that enables you to share and access your health records digitally"
The demographic details attached to it came in from the Aadhaar during creation. You never typed themYou typed it. The words self declared are the Government's, not ours, and they settle the question of who chose it
Looks like a string of fourteen digits and is the thing hospitals and health programmes actually quoteLooks like a username followed by @abdm, and is the easy to remember handle you share
If the name here is wrong, the Aadhaar is wrong. That is where the correction belongs and it is a route we describe in full on another pageIf this is the thing you dislike, you are dealing with a username you picked, which is a different and much smaller problem
The official application lists an "Option to Edit Profile details including address and update the mobile no or email", and the name is not in that listThe same official listing describes creating an ABHA address with a mobile number, an email or an ABHA number, so the handle side is plainly meant to be chosen by you
Almost every caller means this one. A name on a health record that does not read the way the family writes itFar fewer callers mean this one, and when they do, the conversation is usually over in two minutes
Why this distinction saves real money. A person who thinks the fourteen digit number can be edited will spend days hunting for a screen that changes it, and may pay somebody who claims to have found one. A person who understands that the name arrived with the Aadhaar goes and corrects the Aadhaar once, properly, and the health account follows. The whole of the rest of this page rests on that one sentence.
The ten second test. Open the ABHA and read the name beside the fourteen digit number. Now open the Aadhaar. If the two match, the ABHA is doing exactly what it was designed to do, and your argument is with the Aadhaar, not with the health account. Our Aadhaar name change in Jharkhand page sets out that route, what it costs and how often a name may be updated.

Where the Name in Your ABHA Health ID Actually Came From

The fastest way to understand a wrong name in any record is to ask who typed it. For an ABHA the answer is unusually clear, because the creation steps are published and your name is not one of the things you are asked for.

How an ABHA is created and what each step tells you about where the name comes from
The published creation stepWhat it tells you about the name
Enter the Aadhaar numberThis is the moment your identity enters the system. Everything the account knows about who you are starts here, which means the Aadhaar is the parent record
Verify the one time password sent to the phone linked with that AadhaarThe system is confirming you are the holder of that Aadhaar. It is not asking you to confirm the spelling, and that difference is the whole of this page
Enter a mobile number to link with the ABHA, and verify a second one time passwordWorth noting because this can be a different number from the Aadhaar linked one. It is a contact detail, not an identity detail
Create the ABHA address, the self declared usernameThe only free text you are asked to supply. If somebody tells you they typed your name into the health system, this is the only place they could have done it
Nowhere in those steps is a name fieldSo the name shown against the fourteen digit number was carried in. Correcting the health account without correcting its parent record is repainting a reflection
The application's editable profile list covers "address and update the mobile no or email with respective OTP validation"Address here means a postal address, not the username. The name is absent from the editable list, exactly as the name is absent from the self update list on other national records we have written about
What we could not readThe official frequently asked questions page for the digital health mission would not open for us. So we print no correction form, no portal step, no fee and no timeline for a name change inside an ABHA, because we have not seen one stated by the Government
We are telling you what we could not verify, on purpose. A great many websites on this subject print a confident five step method for changing the name in an ABHA. We could not open the official answer page, so we are not going to invent one, and you should be careful of anybody who does. What we can state, because the Government states it, is where the name came in and what the application says it lets you edit. That is enough to act on.
The practical rule, in one line. Correct the Aadhaar first, and treat everything downstream as a consequence rather than a separate job. That is true for the health account, and on this website it has turned out to be true for the Ayushman Bharat card, the MGNREGA job card and the labour card and e-Shram as well. One correction, many records.

ABHA Is the One Record on This Website You Are Allowed to Delete

Every other page here describes a record you are stuck with. You cannot delete a ration card because you dislike the spelling. You cannot delete a land record, a job card, a pension record or an Aadhaar. The ABHA is different, and the Government says so in plain words.

The sentence that gives you the extra routes. The Government's health portal states: "You can participate at your own free will and choose to create your ABHA number voluntarily. Also, at any time, you can also request for permanent deletion or temporary deactivation." Read it twice. Voluntary participation, permanent deletion, temporary deactivation. No other record on this site offers you those words.
1

Correct the Aadhaar and let the account follow

This is the right route for nearly everybody. The name came in from the Aadhaar, so correcting the Aadhaar fixes the cause rather than the symptom, and it fixes every other record that reads the Aadhaar at the same time. Nothing is lost and nothing is unlinked.

2

Ask for temporary deactivation

The Government's own description says this may be requested at any time. It is a pause, not a cure. It is worth knowing about if you have a reason to stop the account being used while you sort out the record behind it, but it does not correct a spelling.

3

Ask for permanent deletion

Also stated as available at any time. This is an exit, not a correction. It is the option for a person who has decided the account is not for them, and it should be the last thing you consider rather than the first, for the reason in the warning below.

4

What deletion does not do

It does not correct your Aadhaar, and it does not correct a hospital's own file about you. A new account created from the same uncorrected Aadhaar will carry the same spelling, because the spelling is not coming from the health account. You would be back where you started.

5

The thing to weigh before deleting

The whole value of the account is that health records attach to it. The Government's news service has reported more than 42 crore health records linked to ABHA accounts. An account with your history attached to it is not the same as an empty one, and we cannot tell you what becomes of linked records on deletion because we have not seen that stated.

6

Our plain recommendation

Use route one. Correct the Aadhaar, then look at the health account again. Keep routes two and three in your pocket as things the Government says you are entitled to ask for, which is more than most records allow, rather than as the first move.

Do not let anybody sell you deletion as a name correction. It is not one. It is a decision to stop taking part in a system you joined voluntarily, and the Government offers it for that reason, not as a way around a spelling. If a person offers to delete and recreate your ABHA to fix a name, ask them what will be different the second time, given that the name arrives from an Aadhaar nobody has touched. There is no answer to that question.

ABHA, the Ayushman Card and a Health Insurance Policy Are Not the Same Thing

Two of these carry the words Ayushman Bharat, which is why families arrive certain they have one card when they are holding another. The difference decides which page you should be reading.

How the ABHA, the Ayushman Bharat treatment card and a private health insurance policy differ
What it isWhat it does, and where the name lives
ABHA, the Ayushman Bharat Health AccountA record identifier. Fourteen digits, plus a username you chose. It does not pay a hospital bill. It lets your history follow you. The name came from your Aadhaar, and this page is about that
The Ayushman Bharat treatment cardAn entitlement, resting on a household having been listed. A completely different question, with a completely different reason for a wrong name, which our Ayushman Bharat card name change page deals with at length
A health insurance policy from a companyA contract. The name is whatever the proposal form said, and correcting it is the insurer's own process, covered on our health and motor insurance policy page
How to tell which one you are holdingCount the digits and look for the @abdm style username. If that is there, you are holding an ABHA. If the card talks about treatment at empanelled hospitals up to an amount, you are holding the other one
Why it matters so muchBecause the correction routes are completely different. Chasing an entitlement listing when your problem is an Aadhaar spelling wastes weeks, and so does the reverse
The single most common muddle we hear on the telephone. A family says the Ayushman card has the wrong name and means the health account, or says the health account has the wrong name and means the treatment card. Send us a photograph and we will tell you which one you are holding before you spend anything. It takes us a minute and it decides the whole route.

How to Fix a Wrong Name in an ABHA Health ID in Jharkhand

1

Work out which of the two identifiers is wrong

The fourteen digit ABHA number, or the self declared address that looks like a username. They have different answers, and getting this wrong sends you down a route that cannot help you.

2

Put the ABHA beside the Aadhaar

Read both names letter by letter. In nearly every case they will match, which tells you the health account is working correctly and the argument is with the Aadhaar.

3

Then put both beside the rest of the family papers

The school certificate, the voter card, the bank passbook. Whichever record disagrees with everything else is the one to correct. Decide this before you spend anything.

4

Correct the Aadhaar if that is the odd one out

Through the proper route. Aadhaar charges per attempt with no refund and limits how often a name may be updated, so it is worth getting the request right the first time. Our Aadhaar page sets it out.

5

Do not correct the Aadhaar if the Aadhaar is right

If the Aadhaar carries the spelling your family actually uses, leave it alone and correct whatever record disagrees with it instead. We have watched people damage a correct Aadhaar to match an old wrong entry elsewhere.

6

Check the ABHA again after the Aadhaar is corrected

Open it and read it. Do not assume it refreshed by itself, and do not assume it did not. Look, because you will want to know before a hospital does.

7

If only the username is wrong, treat it as the small job it is

The ABHA address is described by the Government as a self declared username. It is a handle. It is not the name on your medical record, and nothing serious rests on it.

8

Use the profile edit for what it actually covers

The official application lists an option to edit profile details including address and to update the mobile number or email with a one time password. Keep the mobile number current, because everything in this system arrives by one time password.

9

Check the parents' names and the date of birth too

They travelled in from the same Aadhaar. A single Aadhaar correction can settle all of them at once, and our date of birth correction page covers that side.

10

Think hard before deactivating or deleting

Both are offered by the Government at any time. Neither corrects a spelling, and an account with your history attached to it is not the same as an empty one. Use these as an exit, never as a repair.

11

Manage your consent deliberately

Grant access for the treatment in front of you, and use the stated option to revoke consent afterwards. This is a power you hold over almost no other record described on this website.

12

Keep every acknowledgement

The Aadhaar update slip above all. The people who read your health records later were not there when they were made, and a paper that shows what you corrected and when is worth keeping.

There is no step here that happens inside the health account, and that is the honest shape of this job. Almost everything above happens at an Aadhaar enrolment centre or at your own kitchen table with the papers spread out. If somebody is charging you for work inside the ABHA itself, ask them exactly which screen they are going to use, because we looked for one and the official answer page would not open for us to check.
The order matters more than the effort. Decide which record is wrong, correct that one, then look at everything downstream. People who work in the other direction, correcting whatever is easiest to reach first, end up paying twice and still having a mismatch. Our name mismatch at document verification page is about what happens when that is left until the day it is checked.

Central Gazette Process for a Name From Jharkhand, and Where It Fits a Health Record

Read this before the rest of this section. Nothing about an ABHA is ever published in a gazette. The health account does not hold a name of its own; it carries the one that came in from the Aadhaar, so there is nothing in it for a gazette to correct. This process matters to you in one situation only: where somebody is genuinely changing their own name, in which case the Aadhaar is corrected afterwards and the health account follows it like everything else. It is printed in full so you can see what a real file involves, and so you recognise at once when a gazette is being sold to somebody whose only problem is a spelling carried in from an Aadhaar. The answer there is no, because a gazette does not rewrite an Aadhaar.

No district in Jharkhand has a gazette counter, so a genuine file goes from Ranchi, Jamshedpur, Dhanbad, Bokaro, Hazaribagh, Deoghar or anywhere else in the state to the Department of Publication, Civil Lines, Delhi 110054, and the notice publishes in Part IV of the Gazette of India. As reported in July 2025 the Finance Department stopped personal name change notifications from the Jharkhand Government Press with immediate effect, so there is no state alternative to fall back on.

The Eight Steps of a Name File Sent From Jharkhand

1

Settle the final name first

Letter by letter, with the spacing you want, and then use exactly that everywhere, Aadhaar included. A corrigendum after publication is a second fee and a second wait.

2

Pick the category, then its proforma

A genuine change of name is change of Name Adult or Major. A wrongly typed spelling is the public notice for a wrongly written name. Twelve categories exist and only one is yours.

3

Type the proforma in duplicate

Two originals with two witnesses giving signature, full name, address and mobile number on both copies. A change of name is signed in the old name; a public notice is signed in your own name.

4

Fill the employment field if it is a change of name

The adult proforma asks for the post of the applicant and the office or company name. A student or a homemaker should still complete it rather than leaving it blank, because a blank field brings the file back.

5

Publish and keep the original paper

One of the daily local leading newspapers, carrying both names in full, the father or husband name and the residential address. The whole original paper goes in the file, not a cutting.

6

Pay only through BharatKosh

The Non Tax Receipt Portal and nowhere else since October 2018. Select the Department of Publication by name, read the amount the portal shows on the day, pay in your own name and print the e-receipt.

7

Check every date, then post it yourself

Nothing in the file older than one year. Personally or by post or courier only, never through an agent or advocate. Photocopy everything first, because nothing sent in comes back.

8

Read the notice, then update in the right order

Check every word the day it publishes, download the e-Gazette copy, and then correct the Aadhaar first, because that is the record the health account was built from. Everything downstream, the ABHA included, follows the Aadhaar rather than the gazette.

The Five Papers in the File, and What Is Checked in Each

The five papers of a Central Gazette name file from Jharkhand and what the Department checks in each
The paperWhat is checked in it, clause by clause
1. The proforma, in duplicateThat it is the right category format; the existing full name exactly as your documents carry it; the new full name exactly as settled; the father or husband name; the full address with pin code; the post and office or company name where it is a change of name; the signature in the right name for the category; two witnesses complete with signature, full name, address and mobile number
2. The affidavit or undertakingThe same names and address as the proforma, word for word, with wording matching the category. On Rs 100 non-judicial stamp paper as our safe default
3. The original newspaperThe original paper, not a cutting; the paper name and date of publication visible; both names carried; the father or husband name and residential address; dated within the last year
4. Photographs, identity proof and any category paperTwo self attested passport photographs; self attested identity and address proof matching the proforma address; both witnesses proofs; and, in a public notice file, the attested photocopy of the connected document carrying the error
5. The CD, its certificate and the BharatKosh receiptMS Word, without the witness portion, with the name typed in place of the signature; the certificate that the hard copy and the soft copy are the same; the forwarding letter to the Controller of Publication with a telephone number and email; the e-receipt
The proforma is where files are lost, and there are twelve to choose from. A wrongly typed spelling filed on the change of name form declares henceforth be known as, claiming a change you never made. The Government charge already paid is not refunded, because BharatKosh payments are non-refundable. You then have six months to make good a shortcoming the Department points out, after which a fresh application with all new documents is required.
What to select on BharatKosh, field by field. Pay to the Department of Publication under the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, and pick the Ministry, the Pay and Accounts Office and the Drawing and Disbursing Officer by their names in the dropdown, never by a code copied off a website. The codes printed for this office on different websites do not agree with each other, and money paid into the wrong head cannot be traced to your file. Read the amount on the portal on the day you pay, because it is revised each financial year.
Why a gazette cannot help an ABHA on its own, stated as simply as we can. The published creation steps for an ABHA never ask you to type a name. The name arrives with the Aadhaar. A gazette notice is a published statement about a person's name, and it does not rewrite an Aadhaar by itself, so it cannot change what the health account is showing. Where a person is genuinely changing their name, the gazette is the evidence the Aadhaar correction rests on, and the health account follows the Aadhaar. Where a person merely has a misspelt Aadhaar, a gazette file is not the route at all, and our name correction against name change page explains that difference in full.

The posting detail is on the sending the file to Delhi page, the change of name wording on the proforma format page and the public notice wording on the public notice proforma page, the charge by category on the fee and undertaking page, the reasons files come back on the rejection reasons page, and the download on the download page.

What an ABHA Health ID Name Correction Costs in Jharkhand

Cost and time for correcting a name connected to an ABHA health account in Jharkhand
ItemCostTime
Reading the ABHA against the AadhaarNothing, and it settles the whole question for most people. If the two match, the health account is behaving correctly and your work is at AadhaarTen minutes
Working out which of the two identifiers is wrongNothing. The fourteen digit number carries the name that came from the Aadhaar; the address is a self declared username. Two different problems, two different answersTwo minutes
Correcting the Aadhaar, where that is the record that is wrongAadhaar charges a fee per attempt with no refund and limits how often a name may be updated. This is the only payment most readers of this page will ever make, and it fixes many records at onceSet by the enrolment centre
A name change inside the ABHA itselfWe print no fee, because we verified none. The official frequently asked questions page for the digital health mission would not open for us, and the application's own editable list covers the postal address, the mobile number and the email, not the nameNot stated by any source we could read
Temporary deactivation or permanent deletionThe Government's description says these may be requested at any time, and states no charge that we saw. Neither of them corrects a spelling, so neither belongs in a costing for a name correctionNot stated in the text we read
Anybody offering to edit the name in your health account for a feeAsk which screen they will use. The name was never typed during creation; it came from the Aadhaar. Somebody charging to change it inside the app should be able to say exactly how, and most cannotNot applicable
Government printing charge, only in a genuine change of a person's own nameThe guidelines print Rs 1,100 for an adult change of name and Rs 1,400 for a public notice, for FY 2016 to 2017, each with the caveat that the charge varies each financial year and from case to case. What BharatKosh shows on the payment screen the day you pay is the figure that countsPart IV publishes weekly, so allow several weeks from posting
Our chargeQuoted on your papers before you pay anything, and confirmed in writing. We print no service price on any page of this site
Do not trust a figure printed on any website, including this one, on the day you pay. The Department's own guidelines say the printing charge varies each financial year and from case to case, so the figures above are what the published guidelines show for 2016 to 2017 and are given so you know the order of the amount, not the amount. What BharatKosh shows when you reach the payment screen is the one that counts. Read it there and pay that.
For most readers of this page there is nothing here for us to charge for, and we would rather say so. You read the ABHA against the Aadhaar, you find they match, and the job turns out to be one Aadhaar correction that you can do yourself at an enrolment centre. That is the honest answer and it is free advice. Where we earn our fee is the harder version: a household where three or four records disagree with each other, and somebody has to decide which single spelling everything will be moved to. The line items across all records are on our name change cost page.

Myths About ABHA Health ID Name Corrections

Common beliefs about correcting a name in an ABHA health account and what is actually correct
What people are toldWhat is actually so
The name in the health account is a separate record that can be edited thereThe published creation steps never ask you for a name. It arrives with the Aadhaar, and the application's own editable list covers the postal address, the mobile number and the email. The name is not on that list
Delete the account and make a new one, that will fix the spellingIt will not. A new account is created from the same Aadhaar, so it carries the same spelling. Ask anybody offering this what will be different the second time
You cannot get out of this system once you have joinedYou can, and the Government says so: "You can participate at your own free will and choose to create your ABHA number voluntarily. Also, at any time, you can also request for permanent deletion or temporary deactivation." That is genuinely unusual
The ABHA and the Ayushman treatment card are the same cardThey are not. One is a record identifier, the other is an entitlement. They carry a wrong name for completely different reasons and are corrected by completely different routes
A gazette notification will change the name in the health accountIt will not, by itself. The health account reads the Aadhaar. A gazette is evidence a genuine name change rests on, and the Aadhaar correction is what actually moves the health record
The username with @abdm in it is my official nameIt is a self declared username, in the Government's own words. It is a handle for sharing records. Nothing medical or legal rests on what you typed there
A mismatch does not matter because nobody reads thisThey do now. The Government's news service has reported more than 42 crore health records linked to these accounts, with several lakh facilities and healthcare professionals registered. A mismatch fails quietly, while you keep the card
Change the Aadhaar to match whatever the health account showsOnly if the Aadhaar is the wrong one. If the Aadhaar already carries the spelling your family uses, leave it alone. We have watched people damage a correct Aadhaar to chase a wrong entry somewhere else
Once records are shared with a hospital they stay sharedNot necessarily. The official application describes an "Option to revoke consent to stop sharing of your health records after granting consent". Very few people know they are allowed to do that
The websites offering ABHA name change services are officialMany are not. A great many pages on this subject carry official looking names and exist to collect visitors. A Government page address ends in a Government domain, and the Government pages we could read do not set out a name correction at all
The question that ends most of these conversations. Ask: where did this name come from? Not which screen is showing it. For an ABHA the answer is the Aadhaar, every time, because nothing in the creation process ever asked you to type it. Once you accept that, you are no longer dealing with a health system at all. You are dealing with an ordinary Aadhaar correction, and this website has a page for it.

Key Terms in an ABHA Health ID Name Correction

Key terms used when dealing with a wrong name in an ABHA health account
TermWhat it means in practice
ABHAAyushman Bharat Health Account. An account under the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission that lets your health records be stored and shared digitally
ABHA number"A 14 digit number that will uniquely identify you as a participant in India's digital healthcare ecosystem." The part that carries the name that came from your Aadhaar
ABHA address"A unique identifier (self declared username) that enables you to share and access your health records digitally." Written as a username followed by @abdm. The only part you chose
Self declaredThe Government's own phrase for the address. It is the word that tells you who is responsible for that one, and by contrast who is not responsible for the other
LinkingAttaching health records to the account so they travel with you. The thing a name mismatch breaks first, and it breaks quietly
ConsentYour permission for somebody to see your records, described as covering who may access them, what type of information, and for what duration
Revoking consentSwitching that permission off again after granting it. A power you hold over almost no other record on this website
Temporary deactivationA pause on the account, which the Government says may be requested at any time. Not a correction
Permanent deletionLeaving the system, also stated as available at any time. An exit, not a repair, and a new account from the same Aadhaar carries the same spelling
One time passwordThe code sent to your phone. Everything in this system runs on it, which is why the linked mobile number is worth keeping current
The Ayushman Bharat treatment cardA different thing with a similar name. An entitlement to treatment, not a record identifier. The commonest confusion on this subject
Source recordThe record the name really lives in. For an ABHA it is the Aadhaar, and it is the only thing on this page that can actually be corrected

ABHA Health ID Name Help Across Jharkhand

The office that matters for this job is the Aadhaar enrolment centre, and that is local to you in every district. What we do sits before that visit. We read the health account against the Aadhaar and the rest of the family's papers, tell you whether the problem is the fourteen digit number or the username, tell you which record is actually the odd one out so that you correct the right one the first time, and draft the Aadhaar request. We will also tell you plainly when the answer is that the health account is working correctly and nothing needs doing to it at all. That is done on your scans over WhatsApp, for every district. Send a photograph of whichever card you are holding and we will start by telling you which card it is.

Send the ABHA and the Aadhaar

Send a photograph of the health account exactly as it appears to you, and the Aadhaar. Send any other card you think is connected, because the first thing we do is tell you which card you are actually holding, and families are very often holding the Ayushman treatment card and calling it the health account, or the other way round. Add the school certificate, the voter card or the bank passbook if the household name is written differently in different places. Our first reply tells you whether the problem is the fourteen digit number or the username, which single record is the odd one out, and whether anything needs doing at all. If the health account matches the Aadhaar, we will say so and tell you there is nothing here to pay us for. Details on the contact page.

ABHA Health ID Name Change: Frequently Asked Questions

How do I change my name in my ABHA health ID?+
In nearly every case you correct the Aadhaar, not the health account. Look at how an ABHA is made. You enter the Aadhaar number, verify the one time password on the Aadhaar linked phone, enter a mobile number for the account, verify a second one time password, and create the ABHA address. Nowhere are you asked to type a name. It comes in with the Aadhaar. So correct the Aadhaar properly, once, and look at the health account again afterwards. Our Aadhaar name change page sets out that route.
Is there an official online form to correct the name in an ABHA?+
We looked, and we are not going to print one we have not seen. The official frequently asked questions page for the digital health mission would not open for us, so we print no form number, no portal step, no fee and no timeline for a name change inside an ABHA. What we can tell you, because it is officially stated, is that the application offers an "Option to Edit Profile details including address and update the mobile no or email with respective OTP validation". The name is not in that list. Be careful of any website that prints a confident method without saying where it got it.
What is the difference between the ABHA number and the ABHA address?+
The ABHA number is described officially as "a 14 digit number that will uniquely identify you as a participant in India's digital healthcare ecosystem", and the demographic details against it came in from your Aadhaar. The ABHA address is "a unique identifier (self declared username) that enables you to share and access your health records digitally", written as a username followed by @abdm. One you were given, one you typed. Work out which one you are unhappy with before you do anything, because the answers are completely different.
Can I just delete my ABHA and make a new one with the right name?+
You can delete it, but it will not do what you want. The Government's description says you may "request for permanent deletion or temporary deactivation" at any time, which is a real right and an unusual one. But a new account would be created from the same Aadhaar and would carry the same spelling. If somebody offers you this as a name correction, ask them what will be different the second time. There is no answer. Correct the Aadhaar instead.
Is making an ABHA compulsory?+
The Government's own words are that "You can participate at your own free will and choose to create your ABHA number voluntarily." That sentence is worth knowing because almost nothing else described on this website is optional. You cannot decline a land record or a ration card the way you can decline this. We give no view on whether you should have one, because that is a decision for you and your family, not a product we sell.
Is the ABHA the same as my Ayushman Bharat card?+
No, and this is the commonest confusion we hear. The ABHA is a record identifier: fourteen digits plus a username, designed so your health history travels with you. The Ayushman Bharat treatment card is an entitlement, resting on a household having been listed. They carry a wrong name for entirely different reasons. Our Ayushman Bharat card name change page deals with that one, and a private policy is covered on our health and motor insurance page.
Do I need a gazette notification to correct my ABHA?+
No. The health account reads what the Aadhaar holds. A gazette notice is a published statement about a person's name, and it does not rewrite an Aadhaar by itself, so it cannot change what the health account shows. Where somebody is genuinely changing their own name, the gazette is the evidence the Aadhaar correction rests on, and the health account follows the Aadhaar after that. Our name correction against name change page explains which situation you are in.
Does a wrong name in the ABHA actually cause any harm?+
Yes, and it causes it quietly. The point of the account is that records link to it, and the Government's news service has reported more than 42 crore health records linked so far, with several lakh facilities and healthcare professionals registered. A name that does not match is what breaks the linking, so you keep the card and lose the benefit without anybody telling you. The World Health Organization's India office has published a Chhattisgarh district account in which follow up among ABHA linked patients reached 68 percent against 37 percent for others. That is another State and an international organisation's account, not a Government of India record, and we say so. It is still the clearest published sign we found that the linkage itself matters.
Can I control who sees my health records?+
Yes, and you should use it. The official application describes the ability to "Own and Control access of your health records in terms of who can access, what type of health information can be accessed and for what duration", and an "Option to revoke consent to stop sharing of your health records after granting consent". Grant access for the treatment in front of you and revoke it afterwards. Almost no other record described on this website can be un-shared once shared.
My Aadhaar is correct but the health account shows an old spelling.+
Then do not touch the Aadhaar. This is the mistake we most want to prevent. People damage a correct Aadhaar to make it match a wrong entry somewhere else, and end up with two wrong records instead of one. Check the Aadhaar again carefully against the rest of the family papers to be sure it really is the right one, and if it is, the account is the thing that has not caught up. Send us both and we will tell you what we can see, and what we cannot.
Somebody is charging to change the name in my health account. Should I pay?+
Ask them which screen they are going to use. The name was never typed during creation; it came from the Aadhaar. The application's own editable list covers the postal address, the mobile number and the email. We could not open the official answer page to check further, and we say so on this page rather than inventing a method. Anybody who will not tell you exactly where their step comes from is not somebody to pay. A Government page address ends in a Government domain.
How much of this can you actually do for us?+
We tell you which card you are holding, read the health account against the Aadhaar and the rest of the family's papers, tell you whether the problem is the fourteen digit number or the username, tell you which single record is the odd one out so you correct the right one first, and draft the Aadhaar request. We will also tell you plainly when the account is behaving correctly and there is nothing here to charge for. We are a documentation consultancy and not advocates, not the National Health Authority, not the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, not UIDAI and not a hospital.

Who wrote and checked this page

Written and maintained by the Jharkhandnamechange.com documentation desk, led by founder Vipin Chauhan, B.Tech LL.B, with 5+ years filing with the Department of Publication. The quoted positions on this page come from three places, and we separate them deliberately. From a Government of India health portal: that the "ABHA number is a 14 digit number that will uniquely identify you as a participant in India's digital healthcare ecosystem"; that the "ABHA Address is a unique identifier (self declared username) that enables you to share and access your health records digitally"; that creation runs by entering the Aadhaar number, verifying the one time password on the Aadhaar linked phone, entering a mobile number to link with the account, verifying a second one time password and then creating the ABHA address; that the stated benefits include to "Establish unique identity across different healthcare providers" and to "Link all healthcare benefits ranging from public health programmes to insurance schemes"; and that "You can participate at your own free will and choose to create your ABHA number voluntarily. Also, at any time, you can also request for permanent deletion or temporary deactivation." From the official ABHA application listing published by the National Health Authority: the 14 digit ABHA number and the ABHA address in the form username@abdm; the ability to "Own and Control access of your health records in terms of who can access, what type of health information can be accessed and for what duration"; the "Option to revoke consent to stop sharing of your health records after granting consent"; and the "Option to Edit Profile details including address and update the mobile no or email with respective OTP validation". From the Government of India news service: that more than 42 crore health records have been linked to these accounts, with several lakh facilities and healthcare professionals registered. Three limits are declared on the page itself. First, the official frequently asked questions page for the digital health mission would not open for us, so we print no correction form, no portal step, no fee and no timeline for a name change inside an ABHA, and we say on the page that we did not find one rather than inventing one. Second, the follow up and disease control percentages quoted from a Chhattisgarh district are from the World Health Organization's India office, which is an international organisation and not a Government of India record, and they come from another State, so they are given as an indication that linkage matters and not as a Jharkhand figure. Third, nothing specific to Jharkhand about the ABHA has been verified by us, and the page does not pretend otherwise. The framing of the account as two identifiers with two different answers, the argument that the name arrives from the Aadhaar because no creation step asks for it, and the treatment of deletion as an exit rather than a repair, are our own working practice and are described as such. We give no view on whether anybody should create an ABHA; the Government calls it voluntary and the page says so. The gazette category positions and the printing charges shown are from the Department of Publication's own published guidelines for FY 2016 to 2017, with the guidelines' own caveat that they vary each financial year and from case to case. We are a documentation consultancy and not advocates, not the Department of Publication, not the National Health Authority, not the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, not UIDAI, not a hospital and not an insurer. Who we are is on the about page.

Official Sources on ABHA and the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission

  • Health ID page, Online Registration System, Government of IndiaFor the fourteen digit ABHA number, the self declared ABHA address, the creation steps, the stated benefits, and the statement that participation is voluntary and that permanent deletion or temporary deactivation may be requested at any time.
  • Ayushman Bharat Digital MissionThe mission itself. Its frequently asked questions page would not open for us, which is why this page prints no correction form, portal step, fee or timeline for a name change inside an ABHA.
  • National Health AuthorityThe authority behind the mission and the publisher of the official ABHA application, for the consent controls, the revoke option and the editable profile list that does not include the name.
  • Unique Identification Authority of IndiaFor the Aadhaar name update route, the charge per attempt and the limits on how often a name may be updated. This is the record almost every ABHA name problem actually belongs to.
  • Ministry of Health and Family WelfareFor the wider health programme framework that the digital mission and the treatment scheme both sit within.
  • Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya YojanaThe treatment scheme, which is a different thing from the health account despite the shared name, and the source of most of the confusion this page tries to clear up.
  • World Health Organization, IndiaFor the Chhattisgarh district account of follow up and disease control among patients linked to an ABHA. An international organisation's publication, not a Government of India record, and from another State.
  • Government of JharkhandFor the State health department and the district offices behind hospital and health scheme records in this State.
  • Department of PublicationFor the twelve gazette categories and their proformas, in the separate case where somebody's own name is genuinely being changed.
  • BharatKosh, the Non Tax Receipt PortalThe only route for the Government printing charge since October 2018, and the only place the amount of the day can be read.

An ABHA Name Problem in Eight Lines

The short version

  • An ABHA has two parts and you only chose one of them.
  • The fourteen digit number carries the name from your Aadhaar.
  • No creation step ever asked you to type a name.
  • So correct the Aadhaar, and the health account follows.
  • Deleting and recreating changes nothing, same Aadhaar.
  • You may deactivate or delete at any time, but that is an exit.
  • You control who reads your records, and may revoke it.
  • A mismatch breaks the linking quietly, while you keep the card.

Before you pay anybody to edit your health account, send us a photograph of it.

We will tell you which card you are holding, whether the problem is the number or the username, and whether the Aadhaar behind it is the one that needs correcting. If nothing needs doing, we will say so.
