ICAI Member and Student Name Change in Jharkhand: SSP Portal, Gazette and Marriage Proof
CA students and chartered accountants from Ranchi, Jamshedpur, Dhanbad and the rest of Jharkhand keep their records with the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India. ICAI's own FAQ says a name change "can be updated through 'update your profile' tab in member functions in SSP", the Self Service Portal. ICAI's Eastern India Regional Council, in its membership guidance, asks for the name "as per the Degree certificate/school leaving certificate", and adds: "In case of a change in name subsequent to the above, submit necessary proof (Gazette Notification)." This is one of the places where a Gazette notice is actually named. A married woman can use her marriage certificate instead. We publish Gazette notices, and we say both plainly.
Five points, in the order you will need them. First, your ICAI name is based on your degree or school leaving certificate, per ICAI's regional guidance. Second, a genuine change of name after that needs proof, and the guidance names the Gazette Notification. Third, a married woman can give a marriage registration certificate. Fourth, the request goes through the SSP "update your profile" tab. Fifth, a student should fix the name before the exam form, so the admit card and certificates carry the right name. We publish Gazette notices, and we say plainly when you need one and when you do not.
What ICAI's Own Guidance Says About a Name Change
Two ICAI sources speak to this. ICAI's FAQ on member services says where to make the change. ICAI's Eastern India Regional Council, in its guidance for new members, says which name to use and what proof to give.

ICAI name problems usually fall into a few kinds. This sorting is ours, built on ICAI's rule that the name follows the degree or school certificate.

CA Students: Name on Exam Forms, Admit Cards and Certificates
For a student, the name in the SSP profile is the name on the exam form and later on the pass certificate. Fix it before you fill the exam form, not after the result. The timing advice here is ours.

Does an ICAI Name Change Need a Gazette Notice?
For a genuine change of name, ICAI's regional guidance names the Gazette. For a married woman, no: the marriage registration certificate is named instead. For a typing slip by ICAI, usually no: your certificate, Aadhaar and PAN show the right name.

Central Gazette Process for a Name From Jharkhand, and Where It Fits an ICAI Name Change
No district in Jharkhand has a gazette counter, so a genuine file goes from Ranchi, Jamshedpur, Dhanbad, Bokaro, Hazaribagh, Deoghar or anywhere else in the state to the Department of Publication, Civil Lines, Delhi 110054, and the notice publishes in Part IV of the Gazette of India. As reported in July 2025 the Finance Department stopped personal name change notifications from the Jharkhand Government Press with immediate effect, so there is no state alternative to fall back on.
The Eight Steps of a Name File Sent From Jharkhand
Settle the final name first
Letter by letter, with the spacing you want, and then use exactly that everywhere, Aadhaar included. A corrigendum after publication is a second fee and a second wait.
Pick the category, then its proforma
A genuine change of name is change of Name Adult or Major. A wrongly typed spelling is the public notice for a wrongly written name. Twelve categories exist and only one is yours.
Type the proforma in duplicate
Two originals with two witnesses giving signature, full name, address and mobile number on both copies. A change of name is signed in the old name; a public notice is signed in your own name.
Fill the employment field if it is a change of name
The adult proforma asks for the post of the applicant and the office or company name. A student or a homemaker should still complete it rather than leaving it blank, because a blank field brings the file back.
Publish and keep the original paper
One of the daily local leading newspapers, carrying both names in full, the father or husband name and the residential address. The whole original paper goes in the file, not a cutting.
Pay only through BharatKosh
The Non Tax Receipt Portal and nowhere else since October 2018. Select the Department of Publication by name, read the amount the portal shows on the day, pay in your own name and print the e-receipt.
Check every date, then post it yourself
Nothing in the file older than one year. Personally or by post or courier only, never through an agent or advocate. Photocopy everything first, because nothing sent in comes back.
Read the notice, then update in the right order
Check every word the day it publishes and download the e-Gazette copy. Then update Aadhaar and PAN, then raise the name change in the ICAI SSP with the Gazette copy.

What an ICAI Name Change Costs
We did not find an ICAI fee for a name change in the sources we read, so we print none. The costs are the proof documents, and the Gazette only for a genuine change.
