Partnership Firm and Partner Name Change in Jharkhand: Registrar of Firms, Sections 60, 62 and 64

Partnership firms in Ranchi, Jamshedpur, Dhanbad and Bokaro are registered with the Registrar of Firms, and the Register records "the names in full and permanent addresses of the partners", as section 58 of the Indian Partnership Act, 1932 requires. When a partner's name changes, section 62 says: "When any partner in a registered firm alters his name or permanent address, an intimation of the alteration may be sent by any partner or agent of the firm to the Registrar". A changed firm name goes under section 60. A mistake in the Register can be rectified under section 64. We publish Gazette notices, and we say this first: a spelling slip in the Register of Firms needs no Gazette notice.

62The section for a partner's changed name or address
60The section for a changed firm name
64The section for rectifying mistakes in the Register
0Gazette notices needed for a spelling slip
Quick answer

Five points, in the order you will need them. First, decide what changed: a partner's name, the firm's name, a partner joining or leaving, or a plain mistake. Second, for a partner's name, send an intimation to the Registrar under section 62. Third, for the firm name, send a signed and verified statement with the fee under section 60. Fourth, for a typing mistake, the Registrar can rectify it under section 64. Fifth, update the partnership deed, bank, PAN and GST to match. We publish Gazette notices, and we say plainly that a spelling slip in the Register needs none.

What the Indian Partnership Act Says About Changing Names in the Register of Firms

Partnership firm and partner name change in Jharkhand, with a partnership deed, the Register of Firms entry and an intimation to the Registrar
Each kind of change has its own section of the Act.

The Indian Partnership Act, 1932 sets out a separate route for each kind of change. These are the ones that matter for a name.

Sections of the Indian Partnership Act relevant to names
SectionWhat it says
58, registrationThe statement gives "the names in full and permanent addresses of the partners"
62, partner's nameAn intimation of the alteration "may be sent by any partner or agent of the firm to the Registrar"
60, firm nameA statement "accompanied by the prescribed fee, specifying the alteration and signed and verified"
63, partners joining or leavingNotice to the Registrar of the change, "specifying the date thereof"
64, mistakesThe Registrar can rectify mistakes, including on application by all who signed the document, as summarised by Delhi's Department of Industries
Why the Register matters. Section 69 limits suits by an unregistered firm and ties a partner's right to sue to being shown in the Register, as summarised by Delhi's Department of Industries. Keep the Register accurate, including every partner's name.

Which Partnership Firm Name Change You Have

Firm name problems usually fall into a few kinds. This sorting follows the Act.

Kinds of partnership firm name change and the section that applies
What changedSection
A partner changed her or his nameSection 62
A partner's name was typed wrongSection 64, rectification
The firm's name changedSection 60
A partner joined or leftSection 63
A partner's address changedSection 62
A partner diedSection 63, a change in constitution
A slip is not a change. If the Register always had the wrong spelling, that is a mistake under section 64. If the partner changed her or his name, that is section 62. Use the right route.

How to Record a Partner or Firm Name Change With the Registrar of Firms

The Act gives the section. The Jharkhand Registrar's own form, fee and office must be confirmed there. This table is our practical advice.

Recording each kind of partnership firm name change
CaseWhat we usually advise
Partner's changed nameIntimation under section 62, with proof of the new name: Aadhaar, PAN and, for a real change, the Gazette
Married partner's new nameIntimation under section 62, with the marriage certificate. See married women
Spelling mistake in the RegisterApplication for rectification under section 64, signed by all who signed the statement
New firm nameStatement under section 60, signed and verified, with the fee; a supplementary deed recording the new name
Partner joining or leavingNotice under section 63, with the date
An example from another state. Assam's Registrar of Firms asks, for a change in partners' names, for the registered deed with a deed of rectification and a witness who is a Judicial Magistrate or Chartered Accountant. Jharkhand's list may differ; ask the Registrar here.

Updating the Partnership Deed, Bank, PAN and GST After a Name Change

The Register is one record. The firm's name also sits in the deed, the bank, the firm's PAN and GST. A change in one should be carried to the others.

Other firm records to update after a name change
RecordWhat usually applies
Partnership deedA supplementary or rectification deed signed by all partners. We print no stamp duty figure
Firm's bank accountUpdated with the Registrar's record and the deed
GST registrationSee Udyam and GST name change
Trade licenceSee trade licence name change
Partner's own PAN and AadhaarSee PAN card name change
Do the Register first. Other offices may ask for the Registrar's updated record. We did not verify each office's list, so ask each one in writing.

Does a Partnership Firm Name Change Need a Gazette Notice?

No, for a slip. A mistake in the Register is rectified under section 64. A Gazette notice is for a partner's genuine change of name; it proves the new name, and the intimation under section 62 records it.

When a Gazette notice is relevant to a partnership firm
SituationWhat usually applies
Spelling mistake in the RegisterSection 64 rectification. No Gazette
Married partner's nameMarriage certificate. Usually no Gazette
New firm nameSection 60 statement. No personal Gazette notice
Partner's genuine change of nameA Central Gazette notice, then section 62 intimation
Our commercial interest, stated plainly. We publish Gazette notices. For a spelling slip in the Register of Firms, you do not need one, and nobody should sell you one for it. Where a partner has genuinely changed her or his name, it goes in the Gazette of India, Part IV, since the Jharkhand state press stopped personal notices in July 2025, as reported.

How to Change a Name in the Register of Firms, Step by Step

1

Get the Registrar's entry for the firm

Read every name.

2

Decide what changed

Name, firm, partner or mistake.

3

Pick the section

60, 62, 63 or 64.

4

Collect proof of the right name

Aadhaar, PAN, certificate or Gazette.

5

Draft the intimation or statement

Signed and verified.

6

Prepare a supplementary deed if needed

Signed by all partners.

7

Ask the Jharkhand Registrar for form and fee

In writing.

8

File and keep the receipt

Date and number.

9

Check the amended entry

Every letter.

10

Update bank, GST and licences

With the new entry.

The one rule that holds the whole job together. Pick the right section first. A partner's name, a firm name and a mistake each have their own.

Central Gazette Process for a Name From Jharkhand, and Where It Fits a Partnership Firm

Read this before the rest of this section, because a spelling slip in the Register of Firms never needs it. A mistake is rectified under section 64 of the Partnership Act. No Gazette notice is needed for those. It is printed in full so you recognise at once when a notice is being sold to a partner who does not need one.

No district in Jharkhand has a gazette counter, so a genuine file goes from Ranchi, Jamshedpur, Dhanbad, Bokaro, Hazaribagh, Deoghar or anywhere else in the state to the Department of Publication, Civil Lines, Delhi 110054, and the notice publishes in Part IV of the Gazette of India. As reported in July 2025 the Finance Department stopped personal name change notifications from the Jharkhand Government Press with immediate effect, so there is no state alternative to fall back on.

The Eight Steps of a Name File Sent From Jharkhand

1

Settle the final name first

Letter by letter, with the spacing you want, and then use exactly that everywhere, Aadhaar included. A corrigendum after publication is a second fee and a second wait.

2

Pick the category, then its proforma

A genuine change of name is change of Name Adult or Major. A wrongly typed spelling is the public notice for a wrongly written name. Twelve categories exist and only one is yours.

3

Type the proforma in duplicate

Two originals with two witnesses giving signature, full name, address and mobile number on both copies. A change of name is signed in the old name; a public notice is signed in your own name.

4

Fill the employment field if it is a change of name

The adult proforma asks for the post of the applicant and the office or company name. A student or a homemaker should still complete it rather than leaving it blank, because a blank field brings the file back.

5

Publish and keep the original paper

One of the daily local leading newspapers, carrying both names in full, the father or husband name and the residential address. The whole original paper goes in the file, not a cutting.

6

Pay only through BharatKosh

The Non Tax Receipt Portal and nowhere else since October 2018. Select the Department of Publication by name, read the amount the portal shows on the day, pay in your own name and print the e-receipt.

7

Check every date, then post it yourself

Nothing in the file older than one year. Personally or by post or courier only, never through an agent or advocate. Photocopy everything first, because nothing sent in comes back.

8

Read the notice, then update in the right order

Check every word the day it publishes and download the e-Gazette copy. Then update Aadhaar and PAN, and send an intimation to the Registrar of Firms under section 62.

The Five Papers in the File, and What Is Checked in Each

The five papers of a Central Gazette name file from Jharkhand and what the Department checks in each
The paperWhat is checked in it, clause by clause
1. The proforma, in duplicateThat it is the right category format; the existing full name exactly as your documents carry it; the new full name exactly as settled; the father or husband name; the full address with pin code; the post and office or company name where it is a change of name; the signature in the right name for the category; two witnesses complete with signature, full name, address and mobile number
2. The affidavit or undertakingThe same names and address as the proforma, word for word, with wording matching the category. On Rs 100 non-judicial stamp paper as our safe default
3. The original newspaperThe original paper, not a cutting; the paper name and date of publication visible; both names carried; the father or husband name and residential address; dated within the last year
4. Photographs, identity proof and any category paperTwo self attested passport photographs; self attested identity and address proof matching the proforma address; both witnesses proofs; and, in a public notice file, the attested photocopy of the connected document carrying the error
5. The CD, its certificate and the BharatKosh receiptMS Word, without the witness portion, with the name typed in place of the signature; the certificate that the hard copy and the soft copy are the same; the forwarding letter to the Controller of Publication with a telephone number and email; the e-receipt
The proforma is where files are lost, and there are twelve to choose from. A wrongly typed spelling filed on the change of name form declares henceforth be known as, claiming a change you never made. The Government charge already paid is not refunded, because BharatKosh payments are non-refundable. You then have six months to make good a shortcoming the Department points out, after which a fresh application with all new documents is required.
What to select on BharatKosh, field by field. Pay to the Department of Publication under the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, and pick the Ministry, the Pay and Accounts Office and the Drawing and Disbursing Officer by their names in the dropdown, never by a code copied off a website. The codes printed for this office on different websites do not agree with each other, and money paid into the wrong head cannot be traced to your file. Read the amount on the portal on the day you pay, because it is revised each financial year.
What a Gazette notice will not do for a firm. It will not change the Register of Firms by itself; the section 62 intimation does. It links old and new names, and nothing more. Since we publish these notices, the honest version is this: for a spelling slip, you need none. Our name correction against name change page explains the categories.

The posting detail is on the sending the file to Delhi page, the change of name wording on the proforma format page and the public notice wording on the public notice proforma page, the charge by category on the fee and undertaking page, the reasons files come back on the rejection reasons page, and the download on the download page.

What a Partnership Firm Name Change Costs

Section 60 speaks of "the prescribed fee". We did not verify Jharkhand's fee, so we print none. It is usually not a Gazette notice.

Costs connected with a partnership firm name change
ItemWhat we can and cannot tell you
Registrar's feeThe prescribed fee in Jharkhand. We print none
Supplementary deedStamp duty in Jharkhand. We print no figure
Affidavit, if askedStamp paper, Rs 100 as our safe default, plus the notary's fee
GST and bank updatesUsually no government fee that we know of
Gazette noticeOnly for a partner's genuine new name. Paid on BharatKosh, revised each year and non-refundable
What we chargeQuoted on the call. For telling you which section applies, nothing
The mistake that costs the most. Updating GST and the bank but not the Register of Firms. The Register is what section 69 looks at.

Who wrote and checked this page

Written and maintained by the Jharkhandnamechange.com documentation desk, led by founder Vipin Chauhan, B.Tech LL.B, with 5+ years filing with the Department of Publication. Sections 60 and 63 are quoted from the Indian Partnership Act, 1932 on Indian Kanoon, and sections 58 and 62 from the Act as published by Delhi's Department of Industries, which also summarises sections 64 and 69. The Assam example is from Assam's Registrar of Firms. Three limits are declared openly on the page itself. First, we did not verify the Jharkhand Registrar's form, fee or office. Second, we print no stamp duty for a supplementary deed. Third, sections 64 and 69 are summarised, not quoted. We publish Gazette notices, and this page says plainly that a spelling slip in the Register needs none. We are a documentation consultancy and not advocates, not chartered accountants, not the Registrar of Firms, and not the Department of Publication. Who we are is on the about page.
