A child under five is enrolled with a birth certificate and a parent's Aadhaar • UIDAI allows a name update only twice in a lifetime • So fix the birth certificate first, then Aadhaar once

Baal Aadhaar Child Name Correction in Jharkhand: Birth Certificate First, Then Aadhaar

Many parents in Jharkhand enrol a baby for Baal Aadhaar before the name is settled, or with a spelling that later changes in school. UIDAI says a child under five enrols by giving "the photograph, name, date of birth, gender, address and birth certificate". UIDAI's FAQ also says "A user can update their name twice" in a lifetime. That limit applies to your child too, as we read it. So the smart order is to get the birth certificate right, then correct Aadhaar once, to match it. For a spelling slip, that is not a Gazette notice. We publish Gazette notices, and we say this first.

2Name updates in a lifetime, per UIDAI's FAQ
5Age for the first mandatory biometric update, per UIDAI
15Age for the second mandatory biometric update
0Gazette notices needed for a spelling slip
Quick answer

Five points, in the order you will need them. First, settle the child's name in the birth certificate, with the Registrar. Second, correct Aadhaar once to match it, since UIDAI allows a name update only twice. Third, a birth certificate issued under the RBD Act is on UIDAI's list of accepted documents. Fourth, for a change of first name or full name, UIDAI's document list names the Gazette notification. Fifth, do the name correction at the same visit as the biometric update at age five, if you can. We publish Gazette notices, and we say plainly that most child Aadhaar corrections need none.

How Baal Aadhaar Is Made for a Child Below Five

Baal Aadhaar child name correction in Jharkhand, with a child's birth certificate, a parent's Aadhaar and the blue child Aadhaar
The child's name in Aadhaar should match the birth certificate.

UIDAI's note of 1 October 2025 explains that "fingerprints and iris biometrics of a child are not captured for Aadhaar enrolment below the age of five". UIDAI's list of documents adds that "Head of Family (HoF) based enrolment is mandatory for children below five years of age".

What UIDAI asks for when a child below five is enrolled
ItemWhat UIDAI's documents say
Details"the photograph, name, date of birth, gender, address and birth certificate"
Birth certificate"issued under the Registration of Births and Deaths Act, 1969 and the rules made thereunder"
Parents' Aadhaar"Aadhaar number of both the parents is required for HoF based enrolment", or one parent or guardian where the child lives with one
RelationshipA document "containing name of child and name of Head of Family"
The birth certificate is the anchor. Since the child is enrolled on the birth certificate, the name in that certificate decides the name in Aadhaar. If the certificate is wrong, fix it at the Registrar first. See our birth certificate correction page.

Which Child Aadhaar Name Case You Have

Child Aadhaar name problems usually fall into a few kinds. This sorting is ours.

Kinds of child Aadhaar name problem
What happenedWhat it usually is
Aadhaar spelling differs from the birth certificateA slip at enrolment
Birth certificate itself is wrongA Registrar correction first
Enrolled with a pet name; real name chosen laterA change of first name
Surname missing or different from schoolA slip, or a surname added later
Name changed after adoption or a parent's remarriageA genuine change of name
Keep school and Aadhaar together. If a school copies the child's name from Aadhaar at admission, that name can stay in school records for years. Settle the name before school admission if you can. See our child name in school records page.

Documents for Each Child Aadhaar Name Case

UIDAI's list of acceptable documents names the papers. Which one fits each case is our practical advice, built on that list.

Documents for each child Aadhaar name case
CaseWhat usually fixes it
Aadhaar slip, birth certificate rightThe birth certificate, which is on UIDAI's list
Birth certificate wrongRegistrar correction first. See birth certificate name change
Pet name, real name chosen laterGet the name entered in the birth certificate, then use it; UIDAI's list names the Gazette for a change of first name
School childA board mark-sheet or certificate is also on UIDAI's list
Genuine change of nameGazette notification, per UIDAI's list, for a change of first or full name
Name entered later in the birth certificate. Under Rule 10 of the Jharkhand Registration of Births and Deaths Rules, 2009, a child's name can be entered within 12 months, and later with a late fee within 15 years. A birth certificate that carries the settled name is often the simplest paper for Aadhaar. Ask the Aadhaar centre whether it will accept it for your case.

The Two-Update Limit and the Age-Five Biometric Visit

UIDAI's FAQ says: "A user can update their name twice, gender and DOB can be updated once and rest there are no limits on the change of address and mobile". A child who uses one update for a small slip has only one left for the rest of life, as we read it.

Aadhaar limits and the child's biometric updates, per UIDAI
PointWhat UIDAI says
Name updatesTwice in a lifetime
Date of birthOnce
First biometric updateAt five years: fingerprints, iris and photo
Second biometric updateAt fifteen years
Biometric update chargesWaived for ages 5 to 17 from 1 October 2025, "for one year"
Use one visit for both. If the child is near five, get the birth certificate right first, then do the name correction at the same visit as the biometric update, where the centre allows it. The charge waiver covers biometric updates; ask the centre whether a name update at the same visit carries a fee.

Does a Baal Aadhaar Name Correction Need a Gazette Notice?

For a spelling slip, no. The birth certificate or a board document fixes it. For a change of first name or full name, UIDAI's list names the Gazette notification. But a birth certificate that already carries the settled name is also on UIDAI's list, so ask the centre first.

When a Gazette notice is relevant to a child's Aadhaar
SituationWhat usually applies
Spelling slipBirth certificate. No Gazette
Birth certificate wrongRegistrar correction. No Gazette
Surname added, school childBoard document. No Gazette
Change of first or full nameGazette notification, per UIDAI's list
Our commercial interest, stated plainly. We publish Gazette notices. For most child Aadhaar corrections, you do not need one. For a genuine change of a child's name, see our minor name change page; from Jharkhand, it goes in the Gazette of India, Part IV, since the state press stopped personal notices in July 2025, as reported.

How to Correct a Child's Name in Aadhaar, Step by Step

1

Check the name in the birth certificate

Letter by letter.

2

Fix the birth certificate first if needed

At the Registrar.

3

Compare it with the child's Aadhaar

Enrolment slip or e-Aadhaar.

4

Decide what kind of change it is

Slip, first name, surname.

5

Gather the parent's Aadhaar

For HoF-based cases.

6

Take the birth certificate or board document

Originals and copies.

7

Plan the visit near age five if possible

With the biometric update.

8

Update the name at an Aadhaar centre

Once, to match the certificate.

9

Keep the acknowledgement slip

Track the update.

10

Download the updated e-Aadhaar

Check the new name.

The one rule that holds the whole job together. Birth certificate first, Aadhaar once. The child has only two name updates for life.

Central Gazette Process for a Name From Jharkhand, and Where It Fits a Child's Aadhaar

Read this before the rest of this section, because most child Aadhaar corrections never need it. A spelling slip is fixed with the birth certificate; a wrong birth certificate at the Registrar; a school child can use a board document. No Gazette notice is needed for those. It is printed in full for a genuine change of a child's first or full name, where UIDAI's list names it.

No district in Jharkhand has a gazette counter, so a genuine file goes from Ranchi, Jamshedpur, Dhanbad, Bokaro, Hazaribagh, Deoghar or anywhere else in the state to the Department of Publication, Civil Lines, Delhi 110054, and the notice publishes in Part IV of the Gazette of India. As reported in July 2025 the Finance Department stopped personal name change notifications from the Jharkhand Government Press with immediate effect, so there is no state alternative to fall back on.

The Eight Steps of a Name File Sent From Jharkhand

1

Settle the final name first

Letter by letter, with the spacing you want, and then use exactly that everywhere, Aadhaar included. A corrigendum after publication is a second fee and a second wait.

2

Pick the category, then its proforma

A genuine change of name is change of Name Adult or Major. A wrongly typed spelling is the public notice for a wrongly written name. Twelve categories exist and only one is yours.

3

Type the proforma in duplicate

Two originals with two witnesses giving signature, full name, address and mobile number on both copies. A change of name is signed in the old name; a public notice is signed in your own name.

4

Fill the employment field if it is a change of name

The adult proforma asks for the post of the applicant and the office or company name. A student or a homemaker should still complete it rather than leaving it blank, because a blank field brings the file back.

5

Publish and keep the original paper

One of the daily local leading newspapers, carrying both names in full, the father or husband name and the residential address. The whole original paper goes in the file, not a cutting.

6

Pay only through BharatKosh

The Non Tax Receipt Portal and nowhere else since October 2018. Select the Department of Publication by name, read the amount the portal shows on the day, pay in your own name and print the e-receipt.

7

Check every date, then post it yourself

Nothing in the file older than one year. Personally or by post or courier only, never through an agent or advocate. Photocopy everything first, because nothing sent in comes back.

8

Read the notice, then update in the right order

Check every word the day it publishes and download the e-Gazette copy. Then update the birth certificate if possible, then the child's Aadhaar, then the school record.

The Five Papers in the File, and What Is Checked in Each

The five papers of a Central Gazette name file from Jharkhand and what the Department checks in each
The paperWhat is checked in it, clause by clause
1. The proforma, in duplicateThat it is the right category format; the existing full name exactly as your documents carry it; the new full name exactly as settled; the father or husband name; the full address with pin code; the post and office or company name where it is a change of name; the signature in the right name for the category; two witnesses complete with signature, full name, address and mobile number
2. The affidavit or undertakingThe same names and address as the proforma, word for word, with wording matching the category. On Rs 100 non-judicial stamp paper as our safe default
3. The original newspaperThe original paper, not a cutting; the paper name and date of publication visible; both names carried; the father or husband name and residential address; dated within the last year
4. Photographs, identity proof and any category paperTwo self attested passport photographs; self attested identity and address proof matching the proforma address; both witnesses proofs; and, in a public notice file, the attested photocopy of the connected document carrying the error
5. The CD, its certificate and the BharatKosh receiptMS Word, without the witness portion, with the name typed in place of the signature; the certificate that the hard copy and the soft copy are the same; the forwarding letter to the Controller of Publication with a telephone number and email; the e-receipt
The proforma is where files are lost, and there are twelve to choose from. A wrongly typed spelling filed on the change of name form declares henceforth be known as, claiming a change you never made. The Government charge already paid is not refunded, because BharatKosh payments are non-refundable. You then have six months to make good a shortcoming the Department points out, after which a fresh application with all new documents is required.
What to select on BharatKosh, field by field. Pay to the Department of Publication under the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, and pick the Ministry, the Pay and Accounts Office and the Drawing and Disbursing Officer by their names in the dropdown, never by a code copied off a website. The codes printed for this office on different websites do not agree with each other, and money paid into the wrong head cannot be traced to your file. Read the amount on the portal on the day you pay, because it is revised each financial year.
What a Gazette notice will not do for a child's Aadhaar. It will not change Aadhaar by itself, and it will not add a name to the birth register. It links old and new names, and nothing more. Since we publish these notices, the honest version is this: for most child Aadhaar corrections, you need none. Our name correction against name change page explains the categories.

The posting detail is on the sending the file to Delhi page, the change of name wording on the proforma format page and the public notice wording on the public notice proforma page, the charge by category on the fee and undertaking page, the reasons files come back on the rejection reasons page, and the download on the download page.

What a Baal Aadhaar Name Correction Costs

UIDAI waived biometric update charges for children aged 5 to 17 from 1 October 2025 for one year. We did not verify the name update charge, so we print none.

Who wrote and checked this page

Written and maintained by the Jharkhandnamechange.com documentation desk, led by founder Vipin Chauhan, B.Tech LL.B, with 5+ years filing with the Department of Publication. The rules on this page are quoted from UIDAI's own documents: its FAQ on how many times details can be updated, its list of acceptable documents for enrolment and update, and its note of 1 October 2025 on waiving biometric update charges for children. Rule 10 is from the Jharkhand Registration of Births and Deaths Rules, 2009. Three limits are declared openly on the page itself. First, we did not verify the name update charge. Second, that the two-update limit applies to children is our reading of UIDAI's general rule. Third, whether a centre accepts a birth certificate for a first-name change is for the centre to confirm. We publish Gazette notices, and this page says plainly that most child Aadhaar corrections need none. We are a documentation consultancy and not advocates, not UIDAI, not an Aadhaar centre, and not the Department of Publication. Who we are is on the about page.
