IRCTC Train Ticket Name Mismatch and ID Proof in Jharkhand: Profile, Ticket and Transfer Rules
Passengers boarding at Ranchi, Hatia, Dhanbad, Tatanagar and Bokaro Steel City sometimes find the name on the ticket, the IRCTC account or the ID card does not quite agree. Three different rules apply. For Tatkal and account checks, IRCTC's own guide says: "User details must match with latest e-Aadhaar in IRCTC registered profile." For the journey, the standard instruction printed on IRCTC e-tickets says: "This Ticket will be valid with an ID proof in original." And to put someone else's name on a confirmed ticket, IRCTC's e-ticket circular allows a transfer to a family member at a reservation office "at least 24 hours before the scheduled departure of train". We publish Gazette notices, and we say this first: a ticket or IRCTC name slip needs no Gazette notice.
Five points, in the order you will need them. First, make your IRCTC profile name match your e-Aadhaar before you authenticate; IRCTC's guide says name, date of birth and gender can be edited only till the profile is authenticated. Second, book every ticket in the name on the ID you will carry. Third, carry that ID in original on the journey. Fourth, if someone else must travel, a family member can take the ticket once, at a reservation office, 24 hours before departure. Fifth, for a small spelling slip on a ticket, we found no published rule; carry the ID that matches best and be ready to explain. We publish Gazette notices, and we say plainly that a ticket name slip needs none.
The Three IRCTC Rules on Names: Profile, Journey ID and Ticket Transfer
A name meets the railway at three points. Each has its own rule.
| Point | What the source says |
|---|---|
| IRCTC profile | "User details must match with latest e-Aadhaar in IRCTC registered profile." Name, date of birth and gender can be updated "only till user profile is authenticated", per IRCTC's app guide |
| Tatkal booking | Only Aadhaar-authenticated users can book Tatkal online, from 1 July 2025, per All India Radio News |
| The journey | "If found traveling without original ID proof, passenger will be treated as without ticket", per the instruction printed on IRCTC e-tickets |
| Who shows the ID | One of the passengers booked on the e-ticket, per that instruction |
| Transfer to family | At a reservation office, "at least 24 hours before the scheduled departure of train", and "granted only once", per IRCTC |
Which Train Ticket Name Mismatch You Have
Railway name problems usually fall into a few kinds. This sorting is ours.
| What does not match | What it usually is |
|---|---|
| IRCTC profile name against e-Aadhaar | A profile typed differently at sign-up |
| Passenger name on the ticket, small spelling slip | A typing slip at booking |
| Ticket in full name, ID with initials or a short name | A style difference between the ticket and the ID |
| Ticket booked for one person, another must travel | A transfer, allowed only in set cases |
| Married woman, ID in maiden name, ticket in married name | Two names on two papers |
| Aadhaar itself carries the wrong name | An identity record to fix first |
How to Handle a Train Ticket or IRCTC Name Mismatch
Some of these are fixed before booking, some on the journey. This table is our practical advice, built on IRCTC's published rules. The ticket checking staff decide on the train.
| Mismatch | What we usually advise |
|---|---|
| Profile against e-Aadhaar, not yet authenticated | Edit the profile to match the latest e-Aadhaar, then authenticate, per IRCTC's guide |
| Aadhaar itself is wrong | Correct Aadhaar first. See Aadhaar name change |
| Small spelling slip on the ticket | We found no published rule. Carry the ID that matches best, and a second ID if you have one |
| Initials on the ID, full name on the ticket | Carry an ID that shows the full name, like Aadhaar or a passport |
| Married name on the ticket, ID in maiden name | Carry an ID in the married name. See married women |
| Someone else must travel | A transfer to family, if the rule allows; see the next section |
Transferring a Confirmed Train Ticket to a Family Member
A confirmed ticket "can be transferred to another member of his family", per IRCTC's e-ticket circular. The family is "Father, Mother, Brother, Sister, Son, Daughter, Husband and Wife."
| Point | What IRCTC says |
|---|---|
| Where | "the nearest Railway Reservation Office" |
| When | "at least 24 hours before the scheduled departure of train" |
| What to bring | The Electronic Reservation Slip printout, photo ID in original, and "a proof for blood relation" |
| How often | "Such request will be granted only once." |
| Government servant on duty | On a written request from the appropriate authority, 24 hours before |
| Students, marriage parties, NCC | On the head's written request; 48 hours for students and marriage parties, 24 for NCC; not more than 10% of the group |
Does a Train Ticket Name Mismatch Need a Gazette Notice?
No, for a slip. A profile slip is edited before authentication; a ticket slip is handled with the right ID. A Gazette notice is for a genuine change of name, and then it goes to Aadhaar first.
| Situation | What usually applies |
|---|---|
| IRCTC profile slip | Edit before authentication. No Gazette |
| Ticket spelling slip | Carry the right ID. No Gazette |
| Transfer to family | Reservation office rule. No Gazette |
| Genuine new name | A Central Gazette notice, then Aadhaar, then book in the new name |

Central Gazette Process for a Name From Jharkhand, and Where It Fits a Train Ticket
No district in Jharkhand has a gazette counter, so a genuine file goes from Ranchi, Jamshedpur, Dhanbad, Bokaro, Hazaribagh, Deoghar or anywhere else in the state to the Department of Publication, Civil Lines, Delhi 110054, and the notice publishes in Part IV of the Gazette of India. As reported in July 2025 the Finance Department stopped personal name change notifications from the Jharkhand Government Press with immediate effect, so there is no state alternative to fall back on.
The Eight Steps of a Name File Sent From Jharkhand
Settle the final name first
Letter by letter, with the spacing you want, and then use exactly that everywhere, Aadhaar included. A corrigendum after publication is a second fee and a second wait.
Pick the category, then its proforma
A genuine change of name is change of Name Adult or Major. A wrongly typed spelling is the public notice for a wrongly written name. Twelve categories exist and only one is yours.
Type the proforma in duplicate
Two originals with two witnesses giving signature, full name, address and mobile number on both copies. A change of name is signed in the old name; a public notice is signed in your own name.
Fill the employment field if it is a change of name
The adult proforma asks for the post of the applicant and the office or company name. A student or a homemaker should still complete it rather than leaving it blank, because a blank field brings the file back.
Publish and keep the original paper
One of the daily local leading newspapers, carrying both names in full, the father or husband name and the residential address. The whole original paper goes in the file, not a cutting.
Pay only through BharatKosh
The Non Tax Receipt Portal and nowhere else since October 2018. Select the Department of Publication by name, read the amount the portal shows on the day, pay in your own name and print the e-receipt.
Check every date, then post it yourself
Nothing in the file older than one year. Personally or by post or courier only, never through an agent or advocate. Photocopy everything first, because nothing sent in comes back.
Read the notice, then update in the right order
Check every word the day it publishes and download the e-Gazette copy. Then update Aadhaar, then your IRCTC profile if it is not yet authenticated, and book in the new name.
The Five Papers in the File, and What Is Checked in Each
| The paper | What is checked in it, clause by clause |
|---|---|
| 1. The proforma, in duplicate | That it is the right category format; the existing full name exactly as your documents carry it; the new full name exactly as settled; the father or husband name; the full address with pin code; the post and office or company name where it is a change of name; the signature in the right name for the category; two witnesses complete with signature, full name, address and mobile number |
| 2. The affidavit or undertaking | The same names and address as the proforma, word for word, with wording matching the category. On Rs 100 non-judicial stamp paper as our safe default |
| 3. The original newspaper | The original paper, not a cutting; the paper name and date of publication visible; both names carried; the father or husband name and residential address; dated within the last year |
| 4. Photographs, identity proof and any category paper | Two self attested passport photographs; self attested identity and address proof matching the proforma address; both witnesses proofs; and, in a public notice file, the attested photocopy of the connected document carrying the error |
| 5. The CD, its certificate and the BharatKosh receipt | MS Word, without the witness portion, with the name typed in place of the signature; the certificate that the hard copy and the soft copy are the same; the forwarding letter to the Controller of Publication with a telephone number and email; the e-receipt |
The posting detail is on the sending the file to Delhi page, the change of name wording on the proforma format page and the public notice wording on the public notice proforma page, the charge by category on the fee and undertaking page, the reasons files come back on the rejection reasons page, and the download on the download page.
What a Train Ticket Name Mismatch Can Cost
The real cost is the risk on the journey. The e-ticket instruction says a passenger without original ID is "charged as per extent Railway Rules". We print no penalty figure, because we did not verify one. It is not a Gazette notice.
| Item | What we can and cannot tell you |
|---|---|
| Editing the IRCTC profile | No fee that we know of, before authentication |
| Transfer to family at the counter | We print no charge. Ask the reservation office |
| Travelling without original ID | Treated as without ticket. We print no penalty figure |
| Aadhaar correction | UIDAI's current charge. Check at the centre |
| Gazette notice | Only for a genuine new name. Paid on BharatKosh, revised each year and non-refundable |
| What we charge | Quoted on the call. For telling you that a ticket slip needs no Gazette, nothing |
